Ben Affleck To Direct The Stand?

October 24, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

After years of trying, including numerous directors, writers and producers attempting to take it on, for the past few months Warner Bros. has been determined to finally turn Stephen King’s The Stand into a cinema franchise.

Back in May is was revealed that the Harry Potter team of screenwriter Steve Kloves and director David Yates were taking on the challenge, but now it appears Yates is out, as Deadline reports Warner has settled on Ben Affleck as the person they want to direct the movie.

However, Deadline’s brief report doesn’t say how interested or committed Affleck is, so it’s a little early to say Ben will actually make the movie. It doesn’t mention either whether Steve Kloves is still involved or if Wanrer is still thinking of this as a trilogy rather than a single film.

Although impossible to boil down to a simple plot, The Stand’s over-arcing premise sees a plague known as Captain Trips wiping out pretty much everyone in the world. The survivors then begin sharing a dream of a strange, evil figure, and slowly come together to try and defeat the anti-Christ like Randall Flaggs. It’s basically good vs. evil told on a massive, apocalytic scale. It was turned into a miniseries in 1994, but despite being much loved by many, the huge plot and ensemble narrative have defeated numerous attempts to take it to the big screen.

The Stand will certainly be a challenge for Ben Affleck, who is just embarking on his third directorial feature with Argo. Both of his previous efforts, The Town and Gone Baby Gone, went onto gain much critical praise and support. If he does take onThe Stand, it isn’t known when it will start shooting.

Gordon-Levitt Sought For Django Unchained

October 24, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Quentin Tarantino is busy locking down the cast for his upcoming Django Unchained, ahead of a planned shoot in January, and now Variety reports that he’s set his sights on Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The actor and the director apparently went out for dinner a few weeks ago, and now Gordon-Levitt’s entered talks to join Quentin’s new movie.

The actor wants to join the movie, which would reunite him with his Inception co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has quite a few scheduling issues, though, that stand in the way – although with Premium Rush moving from this winter to August, it does free up his schedule a little. It isn’t known what role Gordon-Levitt would play though.

The movie centres on a slave, played by Jamie Foxx, who teams up with a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to retrieve his wife from an evil plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). Other cast members include Samuel L. Jackson, Gerald McRaney, Kurt Russell, and Don Johnson.

Paranormal Activity 3 Takes Box Office Record

October 24, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

It seems the US simply can’t get enough of Paranormal Activity, with the low-budget franchise (the third film still cost less than $5 million to make) taking a huge $54 million in its first weekend. That’s not just a record for the franchise, it’s also the biggest autumn opening (classed as September and October) ever, topping Jackass 3’s $50.3 million last year. If that’s not enough it’s the highest opening for a pure horror movie too.

However, while Paranormal Activity 3 was busy setting records, the rest of the new movies rather underperformed. The Three Musketeers only took $8.8 million to place fourth on the chart, amid Twitter recriminations from Milla Jovovich over whether Summit Entertertainment had promoted the movie properly.

As with Rowan Atkinson’s Bean movie, great success on the international circuit isn’t translating into good US box office for Johnny English Reborn. It’s already taken over $100 million around the world in the last few weeks, but in America is could only scare up $3.8 million.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of 21st-23rd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross
(millions)
Total Gross to
date (millions)
1 Paranormal Activity 3 $54.0 $54.0
2 Real Steel $11.3 $67.2
3 Footloose $10.8 $30.8
4 The Three Musketeers $8.8 $8.8
5 The Ides Of March $4.9 $29.1
6 Dolphin Tale $4.2 $64.3
7 Moneyball $4.0 $63.7
8 Johnny English Reborn $3.8 $3.8
9 The Thing $3.1 $14.1
10 50/50 $2.8 $28.8

Matthew Vaughn Developing Two Mark Millar Projects

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Matthew Vaughn sure likes his comic book movies. Following X-Men: First Class he hasn’t decided what he’s going to make next, but it certainly seems he’s heading in a comic direction once more, as he’s working on two projects that’ll re-team him with the creator of Kick-Ass, Mark Millar.

THR reports that Vaughn is now developing The Secret Service and Superior, both based on Millar properties. While storyline details are being kept undercover for The Secret Service, it’s little surprise Vaughn would be working on a movie version, as he co-created the concept and holds the movie rights. The comic is due out in November, with artwork by Watchmen’s Dave Gibbons.

Vaughn also recently picked up the movie rights to Superior, a comic Mark Millar is writing with Leinil Francis Yu. The plot revolves around a boy afflicted with multiple sclerosis who is given the chance to become a superhero named Superior. However, he soon learns that being a hero comes at a heavy cost.

As yet both projects are in early development and now writers are attached. That said, it’s likely Vaughn will pen The Secret Service script along with regular collaborator Jane Goldman, but he’ll get someone else to handle scripting duties on Superior. It’s also unknown whether Vaughn plans to direct both movies or just produce.

Ben Stiller Is Going Up The Mountain

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Whether he’s directing or acting, Ben Stiller is best known for comedy. Indeed he’s rarely stepped outside that as even when he’s gone semi-serious, such as in Greenberg, it’s retained a comedic edge. However now he’s planning to step out of his comfort zone and direct a somewhat literary horror movie.

Deadline reports that Fox has brought Stiller on to helm the horror film, The Mountain. The script has been written by Helen Childress, based on characters from the Edith Wharton novel, Summer. Set in the early 1900s, the film revolves around a young woman who struggles to confront her destiny after stumbling upon a mysterious object that forces her to examine the secrets of her past.

Stiller is also set to star in and direct The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and it isn’t known if that or The Mountain will come first.

Bradley Cooper May Be Man From U.N.C.L.E

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Despite The Man From U.N.C.L.E. being a classic TV show and Steven Soderbergh planning to be behind the camera for a film version, it’s had a lot of difficulty finding a leading man. The likes of Johnny Depp and Matt Damon have passed on the film, and while George Clooney was attached for a while, he recently walked. Now it looks like it may have found somebody, as Variety reports that Bradley Cooper is in talks to play Napoleon Solo.

The plot revolves around two agents for the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E) – Napoleon Solo and his Russian counterpart, Illya Kuryakin, who are committed to saving the world from the evil forces of the Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity (T.H.R.U.S.H.). They were played by Robert Vaughn and David McCallum in the original show.

Scott Z. Burns (World War Z) is on scripting duties, with Soderbergh keen to keep the classic 60s setting of the TV show. The movie is expected to go into production early next year.

Carey Mulligan Up For Inside Llewyn Davis

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Carey Mulligan has come from seemingly nowhere to star in a slew of movies, each of which seems to be more critically acclimed than the next. It seems that she’s planning to keep with the quality as Variety reports she has lined up starring roles with Inside Llewyn Davis and the Spike Jonze’s upcoming movie (which is currently untitled).

Joel Coen and Ethan Coen are writing and directing Inside Llewyn Davis, which recently signed Oscar Isaac for the lead role. The story is based on the life of folk musician Dave van Ronk, and centers on a folk artist struggling to make it in the 1960s music scene. It isn’t known what role Carey Mulligan will play – indeed not much is known about the movie in general.

The Spike Jonze movie meanwhile will reunite the director with Being John Malkovish and Adaptation writer Charlie Kaufman. As witht eh Coens’ movie, everything it still slightly wrapped in mystery, but it’ll centre on a group of world leaders who meet to shape the face of global events. Joaquin Phoenix will also star.

Carey Mulligan will start shooting Inside Llewyn Davis in February, and then jump to the Untitled Spike Jonze Project sometime next spring.

Catherine Zeta-Jones Joins Broken City

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Catherine Zeta-Jones could certainly do with a hit movie. She’s been rather hit by the curse of winning an actress Oscar, where picking up the gong sees what should be a big career boost turn into the high spot before a steep slide into mediocrity (if you don’t believe me, just look at a list of Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress winners and see how most saw their career diminish almost from the moment they won).

Zeta-Jones hasn’t had a success since Ocean’s Twelve, and while she’s got Lay the Favorite, Playing The Field and Rock Of Ages coming up next year, she’ll be hoping the new movie she’s just signed up for, Broken City, will be a hit.

The film is about a Brooklyn private detective (Mark Wahlberg), who is hired by the New York City mayor (Russell Crowe) to discover the identity of his wife’s lover. When the lover turns up dead, the detective digs deeper into the case and uncovers a vast conspiracy involving the mayor. According to Deadline, Zeta-Jones will portray the mayor’s wife.

Allen Hughes will Broken City from a screenplay by Brian Tucker (it’s taken a while for it to get this far though, as the script made the Black List back in 2008). Production is slated to begin in November on a $50 million budget.

Sony Plans Assassin’s Creed Movie

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Sony Pictures is in final discussions to produce an adaptation of the Assassin’s Creed video game, according to Variety. However, whereas in the old days studios used to just buy rights and be able to do whatever they wanted with them, in this case Ubisoft is keeping some control as last May the set up a company specifically to oversee development of movies based on their properties, such as Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon.

The hope is that with the original creators involved, they’ll be able to something better than Hollywood has generally managed on its own with videogame adaptations. Some game companies have felt film versions have actually hurt their franchises, so they’re now much keener to stay involved.

Assassin’s Creed centres on a bartender named Desmond Miles, who is kidnapped by Abstergo Industries and forced to travel back through time for secret missions. He must recover ancient artifacts from his ancestors, after learning that he comes from a long line of assassins.

Over 30 million copies of the various Assassin’s Creed games have been sold since the franchise first debuted in 2007, so it’s definitely popular, it’s just whether they can create a script that actually works for it. No writer or director is attached to Assassin’s Creed yet.

Singer’s Battlestar Galactica Gets A Writer

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

We hadn’t heard much about Bryan Singer’s planned cinematic reboot of Battlestar Galactica, until a few days ago when it was revealed the director’s remake of Excalibur had been cancelled and he was now making Battlestar a priority. As if to prove it, he and Universal have hired someone to write it.

According to Deadline, John Orloff (Anonymous) is close to signing a deal to pen the Galactica movie. Here’s what he had to say about it, “I have wanted to write this movie since I was 12 years old, and built a Galactica model from scratch out of balsa wood, cardboard, old model parts and LEDs. I love BSG, and I would pass on the job
rather than frak it up.”

The movie will be a theatrical remake of the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica TV series, rather than the more recent television Battlestar Galactica revival. The show focuses on a spaceship containing some of the last surviving humans, as they try to find their way back to Earth. It isn’t known when production may begin.

Wachowskis Directing Jupiter Ascending

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Cloud Atlas, the first film directed by the Wachowski siblings (along with Tom Twyker) since 2008’s Speed Racer, has just gone into production, and it seems Andy and Lana are keen that there won’t be such a big gap between their next movies. They have their follow-up planned already with the Warner Bros. project Jupiter Ascending.

The storyline is being kept under tight wraps, but the project is said to bring Andy and Lana Wachowski back to their sci-fi roots. The Wachowski’s came up with the original idea and will write the screenplay. The directors and studio are currently mulling over which A-list actor to pitch the project to.

It isn’t known when Cloud Atlas will wrap production, although it is said Jupiter Ascending is being targeted to start production as early as spring 2012.

But what about the ‘Hard-R gay Iraq movie’ that was mooted for the Wachowskis before they committed to Cloud Atlas? That film, Cobalt Neutral 9,is apparently dead in the water, since they couldn’t secure financing.

Matt Damon Plans His Directorial Debut

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

About a year ago, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck set up a new production company that seemed designed to help both of them get directorial projects off the ground easier. For a while it appeared Damon wanted to make his helming debut with Father Daughter Time: A Tale Of Armed Robbery And Eskimo Kisses, but we haven’t heard much about that for a while, and now Variety reports he may kick off his directing career with a different film, based on a script Damon co-wrote with The Office star John Krasinski and author Dave Eggers (the latter two also came up with the idea).

While this sort of thing would normally seem like a vanity project for a bunch of well-connected people, you’ve got to think the conjunction of Damon, Krasinski and Eggers has to be a good thing. The film is a salesman (Damon) who arrives in a small town and has his entire life called into question. That’s not much of a plot description admittedly, but presumably there’s more to it than that – indeed Krasinski’s going to star as well, so his character has to be involved, but we just don’t know how at the moment.

Damon and Krasinksi have now taken the script to Warner Bros. and while the studio hasn’t given it the thumbs up yet, with a relatively small budget and the names attached, it shouldn’t have much trouble getting funded. Now we’ll just have to wait and see whether Damon can have as much directing success and Ben Affleck.
