The Visit (Blu-ray Review)

January 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Olivia DeJonge, Ed Oxenbould, Deanna Dunagan, Peter McRobbie, Kathryn Hahn
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Running Time: 94 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 18th 2016 (UK)

After a strong start with the likes of The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan has certainly had an up and down career. With his latest, The Visit, he’s stripped things back to the basics, with a relatively little known cast, low budget and ‘found footage’ premise. However, this being Shyamalan he still has a go at trying to surprise the audience and keep them guessing.

In order for their mother to be able to get away for a much needed break, Becca and her little brother Tyler are sent off to stay with their grandparents for a week – despite the fact they’ve been estranged from their daughter for many years. Becca is an aspiring filmmaker and so plans to document the entire trip on her camera, hopefully finding out what happened between her mother and grandparents along the way. [Read more…]

Apropos Of Nothing: Next Top Model’s Nyle DiMarco Wants Us To Grip His Bell

January 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nyle-dimarco-gripbellHe’s the last ever winner of America’s Next Top Model, he deaf, he’s sexually fluid and he is so frigging gorgeous it ought to be a criminal offence. Now he’s becoming a bit of an entrepreneur by helping to bring a new piece of exercise equipment to the market – the Gripbell – a new take on the classic Kettlebell.

However, whoever made this advert is well aware that at the moment anyway, the health benefits of the Gripbell are secondary to showing off DiMarco wearing nothing by skimpy underwear – after all, that is a very important thing to do in its own right. The vid is actually to help promote a Kickstarter which is raising funds for the development of the product.

Sadly though, I’m presuming when it’s finally available to buy, it doesn’t come with your very own Nyle DiMarco. Take a look at the video below.

When A Hookup Is More That Just Sex – A gay guy breaks his simple sex rules in the two-part web series

January 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

when-a-hookup-becomesBack in November, Buzzfeed Yellow posted a very sweet (and short) series that detailed moments in a gay relationship when things change, first when it becomes more than just a hookup, then when it becomes an official relationship and finally when it becomes long-distance.

Now they’re bringing us a new two-part web series, which kicks off with When A Hookup Is More Than Just Sex, which sees a cute young guy detailing his rules for simple sexual hookups – be clean, no sleepovers etc. – but then he starts to break his own rules and things change. It’s well worth a few minutes of your time, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens in part two.

Take a look at When A Hookup Is More That Just Sex below. And come back soon for the second part.

Neil Patrick Harris Will Take The Lead In Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events Series

January 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neil-patrick-harris

For a while now, Netflix has been developing a series based on Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. It’s already been adapted as a movie starring Jim Carrey, but when that was a flop, plans for a film franchise were dropped. The hope is that as a multi-part show it will have more success.

Now the show has its Count Olaf – the creepy uncle who takes in a trio of orphans – and it’ll be none other than Neil Patrick Harris. THR has the news, saying Harris is currently completing negotiations for the role. Assuming he signs on the dotted like, he’ll be the nefarious baddie, who ends up looking after Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire, while having designs on their fortune.

There have been a few ructions with the show, as Mark Hudis was due to be in charge as showrunner, but he’s just moved on and a replacement hasn’t been announced. However, Netflix is still planning to make the show with Neil in the lead. It’s not known when it will arrive on the streaming service.

Connie Nielsen Signs Up To Be Wonder Woman’s Mom

January 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

connie-nielsen

Wonder Woman has been shooting for a while, but it hasn’t finished adding actors to its cast, as THR reports that Connie Nielsen has signed on, to play the superheroine’s mother, Hippolyta. She’ll now head for the set of the movie, which is currently shooting in the UK and Italy.

We still don’t know a vast amount about the movie, although it’s recently been confirmed that it will be set during World War I. It’s likely to follow at least the basics of the character’s origin story, with Chris Pine as a soldier who ends up injured and stranded on the island of Amazonia, where he is nursed back to health by Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. She then follows him to America, where she disguises herself as a normal person called Diana Prince between her bouts of being a hero.

However, we don’t know what Gadot and co. will be up against, or indeed how Hippolyta figures into this – although it’s likely that as Queen of the Amazonians, she won’t be too happy about her daughter leaving home.

Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Elena Anaya, and Lucy Davis also star. The movie will be in cinemas June 23rd, 2017.

10 Cloverfield Lane Trailer – Sequel, spin-off or something else to the monster movie?

January 17, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

10-cloverfield-lane-posterFor quite a long time, there’s been a movie on the release schedule purely called ‘Untitled JJ Abrams Project’. Now we know what it’s called, but as always with the producer/director, he’s still not telling us much. The film is called 10 Cloverfield Lane, and it’s got a creepy trailer.

But what exactly is it? First assumptions were that it was a Cloverfield sequel, but apparently it isn’t, leaving some to say it’s a spin-off (with events happening because of the monster from the first movie but not directly involving it). However, the major rumours are that this will build the Cloverfield name into an anthology of films that are thematically similar but not related by plot. That would particularly make sense in this case, as Cloverfield only got that name because it was it’s code name before they came up with a title, but they never changed it.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr.star. Take a look at the trailer below. It’ll be in UK cinemas on April 8th.

Bradley Cooper, Eddie Redmayne, Cate Blanchett & Loads More Recreate Classic Gone With The Wind Scene

January 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bradley-cooper-gone-with-the-windIt’s one of the most famous moments in the history of cinema – at the end of Gone With The Wind when everything is going wrong, a tearful Scarlett O’Hara asks, “Where shall I go? What shall I do?” Her husband, Rhett Butler turns and says the immortal line, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn!”

Now W Magazine has gathered 29 of Hollywood’s best to recreate that moment, except with the men saying Scarlett’s line and the women saying Rhett’s. It’s more entertaining than you might expect, from Samuel L. Jackson’s melodrama to Eddie Redmayne’s heartfelt rendition. The best ‘Frankly my dear…’ probably has to go to Charlize Theron, although the most memorable is Kristen Wiig saying the line at the same time as spotting a hot guy.

You can take a look at all 29 celebs below, which also includes the likes of Rooney Mara, Bryan Cranston, Bradley Cooper, Brie Larson, Richard Gere, Seth Rogen, Jane Fonda and Elizabeth Banks. Plus you can also enjoy Cate Blanchett’s comedy paranoia about what she’s being asked to do. (If it doesn’t automatically play, click on the link to watch it) [Read more…]

Last Will and Testicle: Season 1 – A gay man deals with losing a ball in the comedy web series

January 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

last-will-and-testicle-s1Testicular cancer isn’t normally something to laugh about, but comedian Byron Lane has set out to change that with a web series based on his own experience of getting the disease. And he’s certainly got a great cast to help him, including Drew Droege, Sam Pancake, Peter Porte, Jonathan Van Ness, and Beth Grant.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘LAST WILL & TESTICLE is a comedy webseries about a man who has a testicle removed because of cancer. It was written, produced, directed, and edited by Byron Lane after he found a lump on his testicle in August 2015. He had surgery two weeks later, wrote a webseries about it, and launched a Kickstarter to raise the funds. He met his fundraising goal in 3 days and doubled it by the end of the campaign.’

In the series the main character has to not just deal with his own feeling about finding a lump and then having a testicle removed, but also other people’s reactions – including his boyfriend, who in episode 2 isn’t exactly the paragon of supportiveness.

You can take a look at all six episodes of Season 1 of Last Will & Testicle below, and if you enjoy it, you’ll be happy to hear that Byron Lane is planning to show Season 2 very soon.

The Wonderful Alan Rickman Dies, Aged 69

January 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alan-rickmanIt’s a sad week for British artists this week, as following the death of David Bowie it’s been announced that Alan Rickman has died, aged 69. A statement from his family revealed that he had been suffering from cancer, which sadly took his life.

While he didn’t make his movie debut until 1988 as Hans Gruber in Die Hard (but what a debut), he had already appeared in several British TV shows and received massive amounts of praise (including a Tony nomination) for his stage work. Indeed it was while playing a scheming character in Dangerous Liaisons on Broadway that he came to the attention of producer Joel Silver, who cast him in Die Hard.

After going up against John McClane, he became one of Britain’s most respected screen actors, thanks to films such as Truly Madly Deeply, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (for which he won a BAFTA), Sense & Sensibility, Galaxy Quest, Sweeney Todd and Love Actually. Of course, he also found a legion of fans with his pitch perfect portrayal of Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies.

As well as acting he directed two movies, 1997’s The Winter Guest and 2014’s A Little Chaos, both of which he also provided the screenplay for.

Unsurprisingly news of his passing has been greeted with sadness by those who knew and admired him, including the younger cast of Harry Potter, many of whom noted that despite the villainous characters he often played on screen, he was one of the most generous and influential people they knew as they grew up.

Daniel Radcliffe summed it up with a post on Google+, where he wrote: ‘Alan Rickman is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with. He is also, one of the loyalest and most supportive people I’ve ever met in the film industry. He was so encouraging of me both on set and in the years post-Potter. I’m pretty sure he came and saw everything I ever did on stage both in London and New York. He didn’t have to do that. I know other people who’ve been friends with him for much much longer than I have and they all say, ‘If you call Alan, it doesn’t matter where in the world he is or how busy he is with what he’s doing, he’ll get back to you within a day.’

‘People create perceptions of actors based on the parts they played so it might surprise some people to learn that contrary to some of the sterner (or downright scary) characters he played, Alan was extremely kind, generous, self-deprecating and funny. And certain things obviously became even funnier when delivered in his unmistakable double-bass.

‘As an actor, he was one of the first of the adults on Potter to treat me like a peer rather than a child. Working with him at such a formative age was incredibly important and I will carry the lessons he taught me for the rest of my life and career. Film sets and theatre stages are all far poorer for the loss of this great actor and man.’
