Michael Bay Confirms He’s Returning To Direct Transformers 5

January 5, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-bayAfter the third Transformers movie, Michael Bay said he was done directing the franchise. However, then Paramount promised to fund his passion project, Pain & Gain, if he came back for a fourth outing. But according to Bay, that was definitely it.

Now things have changed again, as a couple of months ago he entered talk to direct the fifth instalment, and now he’s confirmed he’s taken the gig. He told Rolling Stone, “I’m doing Transformers … 5, is it?…Transformers, I still have a great time. It’s fun to do a movie that 100 million people will see. But this is the last one. I have to pass the reins to someone else.”

When reminded that he’s said that before, he replied. “I know. J.J. [Abrams] told me, ‘You’re the only guy that could do this.’ But it’s time to move on. One more.”

We’ll have to see whether he sticks to his word (and to be honest there are quite a few people who’d like him to step aside and give someone else a chance to see whether they can bring something a bit different to the franchise). Mark Wahlberg is also expected to return, with a 2017 release planned.

The Internet Has Decided That Colton Haynes Has Come Out As Gay

January 3, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colton-haynes-vman4-slide

Over the last few years different celebs have been competing for the subtlest way of coming out, whether it’s a brief approved mention of David Hyde Pierce’s partner in a newspaper or Matt Bomer thanking his hubby and kids during a speech. However Colton Haynes may have taken things one step further with a statement that could mean he’s gay, or not, but which the internet has decided means he’s definitely in the homo club.

Haynes’ statement came in response to someone’s Tumblr post which read, ‘When I found out Colton Haynes had a secret gay past, I got so excited even though i know it makes absolutely no difference in my life.’

Haynes then put a response on the comment via his own personal Tumblr, saying, ‘Was it a secret? Let’s all just enjoy life & have no regrets :)’

Objectively, that could mean he’s gay, has previously had same sex experiences, or could simply be a response to the fact that when he was first starting out he had a steamy 2006 photoshoot for the now defunct gay magazine XY, which saw him kissing another guy and getting up close and very personal. His representatives later tried to get the pics removed from the internet after he first found success in Teen Wolf. He was also once spotted holding hands with Arrow co-star John Barrowman in an airport (although it appears it was something done just to play with the paparazzi).

Perhaps he’s gay, maybe bisexual, possibly straight or something else. At the moment the jury is out, but some are seing extra evidence in a tweet Haynes posted on New Years Eve, which simply read, ‘No fear this year’. That may have simply been about the severe anxiety issues he’s recently talked about, but could also be about a decision he’s made not to hide his sexuality.

Whatever the truth of the matter, there is no doubt though that he has been a longtime supporter of gay rights, and has also posted pics on the web of him out with his gay brother Joshua, Josh’s husband and their child. The world may have now decided that Colton is gay too, but I think we’d better hold off giving him his official big gay sash and tiara until we have a little more confirmation – however the fact he hasn’t taken it down yet or issued a clarification is very suggestive.

The Danish Girl (Cinema Review)

January 3, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander, Amber Heard, Ben Whishaw
Director: Tom Hooper
Running Time: 119 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 1st 2016 (UK)

The idea of a film about Lili Elbe has been doing the rounds of Hollywood for years, but despite plenty of interest from well-known actors and directors, it never got off the ground, partly because the money men thought a period piece about transgender issues would be box office poison. However, trans issues suddenly hit the mainstream and the film got the go ahead.

It’s certainly arrived with a lot of fanfare, but the movie is so polite in a very British sort of way, that it will leave many feeling like they’ve appreciated it but aren’t totally satisfied. [Read more…]

The Cobbler (DVD Review)

January 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Adam Sandler, Melonie Diaz, Steve Buscemi, Method Man, Dan Stevens
Director: Tom McCarthy
Running Time: 99 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: January 4th 2016 (UK)

The Cobbler is not Adam Sandler in zany mood, but he’s not being 100% serious either. He certainly pulls things back from his usual performances and enters mumbling mode, which is admittedly more watchable than he often is. He is Max, a cobbler who is forced to use an old shoemaking machine when his newer one breaks. He discovers that the machine has magical properties, as he now has the ability to put on somebody else’s shoes and literally become them.

At first Max thinks he’s going to be able to have some fun with his powers (including a creepily rapey sequence involving a cameo from Dan Stevens and a woman in a shower), but he soon gets caught up in a tricky situation with a bunch of bad guys. Looking into the lives of his customers also makes his re-evaluate the attempts to save his neighbourhood, which he’d previously ignored, and so he sets out to use his powers to stop the baddies destroying everything. Ricki And The Flash (Blu-ray Review)

January 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Meryl Streep, Mamie Gummer, Kevin Kline, Sebastian Stan, Rick Springfield
Director: Jonathan Demme
Running Time: 101 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: December 28th 2015 (UK)

A film like Ricki And The Flash makes you realise just how good Meryl Streep is, as without her this film is likely to have gotten far worse reviews than it did. She is obviously having a great time in the lead role of an aging rockers whose dreams of stardom never really came to anything, and now finds herself somewhat estranged from her kids.

Ricki (whose real name is Linda) gets a call from her ex-husband, Pete (Kevin Kline), to tell her their daughter, Julie (Mamie Gummer), is severely depressed after her hubby ran off with another woman. Ricki jumps on a plane from California to Iowa and discovers things are worse than she thought, as Julie has attempted suicide. However, Julie seems to respond to having her mother around, even if her two sons are less impressed about having the mother who virtually abandoned them around. [Read more…]

First Image From Matt Damon’s Return As Jason Bourne

January 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bourne-5-pic1Poor old Jeremy Renner, in everything from Avengers to Mission: Impossible it’s looked like he’s been on the verge of being handed his own massive franchise, only to end up slightly on the edge. Now it’s happening with the Bourne franchise, as rather than him starring in the planned follow-up to Bourne Legacy, Matt Damon is returning alongside director Paul Greengrass for Bourne 5.

It doesn’t have an official title yet, but we do have the first image, which we almost didn’t post because it’s so, well, dull. After all, it could have been Damon in any movie. He doesn’t even have his shirt off or anything.

EW also has a few new bits of info on the plot, saying it’ll be set in 2016, 12 years after the 2004 setting of The Bourn Ultimatum. Jason has apparently been off the grid in that time, but comes out of hiding in order to find our more about his past.

Damon says, “We find him in a dark and tortured place,” before adding that the plot also involves the changes that have taken place in the past dozen years, “There’s been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyberwarfare and civil liberties.” Bourne 5 will be out this summer.

4th Man Out Trailer – Chord Overstreet and friends deal with one of them coming out as gay

December 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fourth-man-out-slideWe loved 4th Man Out when we caught it a couple of months ago at the Iris Prize Festival, and now we’ve got a trailer for the movie to share with you. You can take a look at it below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Evan Todd (“Switched at Birth”) stars as Adam, a small-town, blue-collar mechanic who likes beer and hockey but surprises his buddies when he tells them he’s gay. Well meaning but perhaps fated to trip over themselves, hilarity ensues when said buddies all try to help Adam find a boyfriend.’

Many of you will recognise Glee’s Chord Overstreet, and you may also recognise Parker Young, as well as Evan Todd as the guy who’s not sure whether his friend are properly rady to accept his sexuality. In our review of 4th Man Out, we said of the movie, ‘Sweet, touching and full of laughs. A gay story told for a straight audience, it’s something you could watch with straight mates or family members without feeling awkward. Of course, being a gay film, there’s plenty of topless hunkinees to go around, which can only help its appeal.’

It should be out in 2016.

Gay Short Film Showcase: Rats That Eat Men – A gay refugee strives to survive while squatting in London

December 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rats-that-eat-men-slideThe media is very bad at knowing the difference between asylum seekers, illegal immigrants, legal migrants and, indeed, people who were born in Britain but aren’t white. However most people agree that if you have a decent reason for getting asylum in the UK – and many coming here are escaping truly hoorific situations – they should be allowed in.

We don’t make it easy though, despite what the likes of the Daily Mail would have you believe, as in most cases you have to prove exactly why you deserve asylum, despite the fact that often the reason they had to leave mean they aren’t going to be able to bring vasts amount of evidence with them. It can be even tougher for those hoping for refuge due to the fact they are gay.

The short film Rats That Eat Men follow gay refugee Ritah, who has escaped persecution in Uganda and is now homeless on the streets of London, squatting in an abandoned building with only a knife to protect herself. She discovers that she’s not living there alone, as a young Polish man is sleeping upstairs. After some intial distrust they begin to bond, with Ritah revealing what she left behind and how much it cost her to get out, which leaves the viewer to think about why squatting in London is better than her life before, as well as considering the dangers and anonymity of living on the edge of British society.

Take a look below.

Pigs Without Blankets: The Penis Documentary Seeks Funding To Look At The Issues Surrounding Circumcision

December 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

pigs-in-blankets-documentaryAs a Brit I’ve often been slightly perplexed by America’s attachment to circumcision, where the majority of young boys still have their foreskins removed as babies, despite the fact that for most of them there is no real religious, legal or culturally necessary reason to do so. As I live in a land where the prepuce largely remains intact (barring for medical or religious reasons), it’s odd how passionate many Americans get about it. Indeed, when I’ve seen American doctors talking about why they still recommend it to their patients, the fact they so often seem to jump on the defensive suggests the may know it’s not as clear cut as they suggest (pun intended).

The documentary Pigs Without Blankets: The Penis Documentary wants to take a look at the world of ‘intactivists’, who go against the grain of American culture and advocate against circumcision. However, to get it made the makers are hoping to raise $25,000 via Kickstarter.

As they say on the fundrasing page, ‘Lots of people have a penis. And even more people are in some kind of relationship with one whether it’s romantic or parental. If you ask a man to list the things more important to him than his relationship with his penis, you’ll get a very short list. Yet, we don’t talk about what happens to most American penises. The fact that we never discuss a surgical procedure done to millions of American baby boys moments after their birth is, well, weird, to some. The fact that people become enraged and often hostile when the subject of circumcision is discussed is even weirder. We want viewers to meet the group of people who fight against circumcision, discover what motivates them, and understand why they feel the best penis is the one left intact. Help us tell their stories, and help us shed light on a practice.’

They are also very correct when they point out, ‘Many people in the US think penises are strange or “gross” in their natural state. Step back a moment and think about how bizarre it is that unless the penis has been surgically altered it’s considered abnormal.’

The likes of actor Alan Cumming are involved in the documentary – as you can see in the fundraising video below he describes himself as an intactivist – as well as others who are part of the fight to inform people about the facts about circumcision and advocate against considering it the default option. They may not have made too many inroads yet, possibly because so many Americans don’t even consider it an issue that needs to be thought about, but perhaps this documentary can give them a bit more of a voice.

In the UK, it does indeed seem strange that you would chop off a part of your new baby for no real good reason – even the idea it can protect you from STDs is hotly disputed – especially considering the risks (every year kids around the world end up with severely damaged penises due to bothched circumcisions), and the fact you’re doing something unnecessary that will affect them for the rest of their life, but which they have no choice over. Plus, while some Americans may think foreskins look weird, I can’t see why they prefer something that when erect, often looks obviously scarred.

If you’d like to see the film, head over to Kickstarter and help out. [Read more…]

Zac Efron Has Super-Abs, Seth Rogen Not So Much In First Official Pic From Neighbors 2

December 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zac-efron-seth-rogen-neighbors-2

There have been quite a lot of set pictures of Zac Efron with his top off on the set of Neghbors 2 (which will be Bad Neighbours 2 in the UK). However, it’s only now that the first official pic has arrived, which shows that it’s not just Efron who’ll be taking off his shirt, as Seth Rogen is showing off his chest hair too.

And not to be outdone on the abs front, Rogen has gotten out the magic marker to draw some on.

Not a vast amount is known about the plot of the movie, although the fact it’s likely to have the subtitle ‘Sorority Rising’ suggests that after Efron and co’s frat boys hijinks in the first movie, this time around the ladies will be getting in on the action. The likes of Chloe Moretz and Selena Gomez have been signed up to cause some of that trouble.

It’ll be in cinemas next May. And if you want to see a little more of Zac – with very little to cover his modesty – click here for the recently revealed nude scene from the upcoming Dirty Grandpa.

First Pics Of Emily Blunt In The Girl On The Train Movie Adaptation

December 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

girl-on-the-train-pic1Paula Hawkins’ The Girl On The Train has been a huge hit as a book, so it’s not surprising at all that Hollywood has picked it up and is making a movie. The film is chugging forwards quickly, wth Emily Blunt in the lead role and Justin Theroux, Rebecca Ferguson, Édgar Ramírez, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, and Lisa Kudrow co-starring.

The book follows ‘Rachel, [who] takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

‘And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?’

The novel has been compared to Gone Girl and also has shades of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple tale, 4.50 From Paddington. For the movie the action has been moved from Britain to the US (although Blunt will still be British). Tate Taylor (The Help) directs, with the movie due out next summer.

First Look At Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone In La La Land

December 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

La-La-Land-pic1

Are you ready for a musical with Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone? While many don’t particular think of them for their singing, they’ve both actually opened up their pipes numerous times on screen (after all, Gosling was nearly in N*Sync) and now they’ve teamed up with Whiplash director Damien Chazelle for La La Land.

The film is about a lonely, aspiring actress (Stone) who desperately trying to find her way in Los Angeles. She meets jazz pianist Sebastian (Gosling) and they quickly fall in love. However they soon realise that balancing their art and their relationship isn’t as easy as they thought.

Chazelle has said of the movie, “I’d like to make a contemporary musical about L.A., starting with the L.A. we know but slowly building to a vision of the city as romantic metropolis–one that is actually worthy of the dreams it inspires. I’d like to make a musical about the way L.A.’s peculiar rhythms can push its residents to the edge of their emotions – be they hope, desperation or love.”

The film is due in cinemas this summer, but take a look at the first image above.
