Apropos Of Nothing: You Probably Didn’t Know You Needed Hunky Shirtless Acapella, But You Do

December 20, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hunkapella-christmasThe problem with Christmas is that none of the hallowed traditions involve muschled, shirtless guys dancing around singing acapella. It’s a massive problem that the group Hunkapella has seen fit to sort out, with a new video where they put on some Christmas stockings, take off their shirts and take us through a Christmas medley.

They could probably do with a few lessons in lip-synching but they certainly look good, and it appears they also have plenty of costume budget, as they certainly get through a lot of them in less than three minutes. We also notice they had to point out they’re straight, but never mind, they’re pretty.

You can watch the Hunkapella’s festive film below. And Happy shirtless Christmas! [Read more…]

Katherine Waterston To Star In Alien: Covenant

December 20, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

katherine-waterstonRidley Scott is finally back at work on Prometheus 2, which is now known as Alien: Covenant (indeed, they slightly seem to be trying to pretend Prometheus never happened), and he’s now casting who will appear alongside Michael Fassbender in the film. While it appears Noomi Rapace will have a small role, it appears shes passing the main female lead role across to Katherine Waterston, who’s now in final talks for the part.

Covenant isn’t completely ignoring Prometheus, as it will follow what happened after Fassbender and Rapace left the alien planet, in search of the engineers that apparently created the human race. However, the early info suggests something has happened to Rapace’s Shaw, leaving Fassbender’s David alone. They then rendezvous with another ship, and it won’t be surprising to hear they end up with a bit of a xenomorph issue, with Scott already promising that the classic aliens will be making a return. We’ll also get to find out what disaster befel the engineers.

There have been some suggestions that Steve Jobs and Inherent Vice star Waterston may be playing Ellen Ripley’s grandmother in the movie, although that hasn’t been confirmed. It’s expected the movie will shoot next year, for release in 2017.

Macaulay Culkin Lets The World Know What Happened To Home Alone’s Kevin McCallister In A Fun New Vid

December 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dryvers-macaulay-culkinIt turns out being left behind by your family as an eight-year-old while they all go off on holiday leaves some mental scars, especially if it resulted in you having to fight off a couple of home invaders who are out to get you. While the words ‘Kevin McCallister’ and ‘Home Alone’ aren’t mentioned, it’s quite clear that’s the territory we’re in during the first episode of the web show :DRYVERS.

The video features Moldy Peaches guitarist Jack Dishel as a man getting a ride via some sort of Uber-style app, who gets picked up by none other than Macaulay Culkin (or at least the character he’s playing). The slightly manic driver then lets his passenger know why he doesn’t get on with his mother, telling a story you’ll recognise from the hit 1990 comedy. However, it turns out ‘Kevin’s’ ingenuity and ability to inflict pain hasn’t subsided over the last 25 years, even if it’s taken him to some rather dark places.

It’s a fun vid, and good to see Culkin on-screen again. I had previously thought the events of Home Alone would have seriously screwed that kid up, and it appears I was right. Take a look below.

The Benefits of Gusbandry Episode 3 – Jackie and her ‘gay husband’ swap places in the dating world (NSFW)

December 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

benefits-of-gusbandry-ep3-slideA lot of you seemed to enjoy the first couple of episodes of The Benefits of Gusbandry, which we posted last month, and now it’s time for the two-part episode three, which you can watch below. If you’re still wondering what ‘gusbandry’ is, it’s a ‘gay husband’, which is what Jackie accidentally got after she went on what she thought was a date, but which the guy thought was just about friendship as he’s gay. Luckily they discovered they had a lot on common.

In Part 1 of Episode 3, ‘River and Jackie make a pact to swap places in the dating world and make each other over for their new online profiles’. In Part 2 ‘River and Jackie go on their dates and wind up deepening their friendship in some unexpectedly tawdry ways.’

Indian Actor Ranveer Singh Shares His Gay Casting Couch Experience

December 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ranveer-singh

Historically tales of the casting coach have been about older men taking advantage of younger actresses, trying to get them to do sexual favours with the promise of roles (and sometimes that otherwise they’d be blacklisted), but in more recent years, more male actors have felt able to say it’s been the same for them. However it turns out that this isn’t just a Hollwood phenomenon, as it’s going on in India too.

Ranveer Singh, who’s appeared in the likes of Band Baaja Baaraat, has opened about about what happened to him as a young actor, during a meeting with a castins director. The older man ignored his portfolio, with Ranveer recounting, “He just kept it to the side and said ’You have to be smart. You have to be sexy. Take. Touch.’

“I was in complete shock. Then he has the gall to negotiate with me. He says, ’Okay, we won’t do anything. Just let me touch it.’ Later he says ’Okay, okay, I’ll only see it.’ I was like, ’Uhh, no.’ And he was heartbroken when I left, like a jilted lover.”

Singh later discovered that he wasn’t the only one who’d had a similar experience with that casting director, as many other young men said the same thing had happened to them. Take a look at Ranveer talking about his experience below. [Read more…]

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Trailer – Tina Fey heads out to report on war

December 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot-poster1-slideWar and comedy may not seem like easy bedfellows, but Tina Fey is giving it a go with Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. The film, previously known as Taliban Shuffle, is based on a true story of a reporter getting out of their depth in Afghanistan.

Inspired by Kim Barker’s memoir, the film follows her after she first arrived in Kabul as a journalist in 2002. At the time she barely owned a passport, spoke only English and had little idea how to do the ‘Taliban Shuffle’ between Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, her stories about Islamic militants and shaky reconstruction were soon overshadowed by the bigger news in Iraq. But as she delved deeper into Pakistan and Afghanistan, her love for the hapless countries grew, along with her fear for their future stability. Martin Freeman and Margot Robbie co-star.

Fey is currently in cinemas with Sisters, with Whiskey Tango Foxtrot  due out in the UK March 4th 2016. Take a look at the first trailer below.

Jeremy Renner To Star In A Biopic Of Legendary Boxer Rocky Marciano

December 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jeremy-renner

It appears that not content with fighting in Mission: Impossible and The Avengers, Jeremy Renner wants to hit some people very hard, as Deadline reports that he’s attached to star in a biopic of legendary boxer Rocky Marciano. Samuel Franco and Evan Kilgore are writing the script, although no director is attached s yet.

Titled Undefeated: The Rocky Marciano Story, the film will be the first authorised biopic of the fighter, as those behind the movie have bought Rocky’s life rights. As Variety points out, ‘Marciano remains the only heavyweight champion to retire from his professional career undefeated 49-0. Best known for his relentless style, Marciano held the heavyweight crown from 1952 to 1956, and defended his title against Jersey Joe Walcott, Roland La Starza, Ezzard Charles, Don Cockell and Archie Moore before retiring at the age of 32.’

The movie will follow the pugilist from his childhood through to his death in 1969, when he perished in a plane crash. It’s still early days for the movie though, so don’t expect to see it for some time.

Take Your First Look At Natalie Portman As Jackie Kennedy

December 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jackie-natalie-portman

Since becoming a mom Natalie Portman has somewhat limited her on-screen roles, but she coming back with Jackie, in which she’ll play JFK’s First Lady, Jackie Kennedy. The first photo of Portman in the role has now been released, which you can see above.

The movie reunites Natalie with Black Swan’s Darren Aronosfky, but this time he’s only a producer, with Pablo Lorrain directing from a script by Noah Oppenheim. Rather than a full scale biopic, the movie will concetrate on Jackie in the days after JFK’s assassination, when rather than solely being able to deal with her own grief (and the fact her husband had been shot in the head right next to her), she was expected to lead the nation in mourning.

At the moment it’s not clear when we’ll see the finished movie, but many expect it to be screened at festivals towards the end of the year, with a full release in 2017. However if it’s good, don’t be surprised if it gets an Oscar qualifying run in the US at the end of 2016.

Seminal Gay Documentary Portrait Of Jason Joins Library Of Congress’ National Film Registry

December 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

portrait-of-jason-slide

Each year the Library Of Congress chooses 25 films for preservation, which it considers are important enough to cinema that they deserve special protection. This year’s movies have now been picked, and the list includes Shirley Clarke’s seminal gay-themed 1967 documentary, Portrait Of Jason.

While not as well-known as it ought to be, the film holds a special place in the history of gay cinema, not least because it was one of the first films to focus on a gay person of color. Filmed over 12-hours in Clarke’s apartment, the doc consists solely of footage of the larger than life Jason Holliday, a gay hustler. He gets increasingly intoxicated as the evening wears on, while holding forth with stories of his life. It’s a fascinating film, which asks the audience to question the truth of what Jason is saying, both in terms of its objective reality and whether Jason is covering over the cracks in his life caused by oppression and self-destruction.

The Library Of Congress notes, ‘In one of the first LGBT films widely accepted by general audiences, Shirley Clarke explored the blurred lines between fact and fiction, allowing her subject, Jason Holliday (né Aaron Payne), a gay hustler and nightclub entertainer, to talk about his life with candor, pathos and humor in one 12-hour shoot. Clarke originally envisioned Jason as the only character, but she subsequently revealed: “When I saw the rushes I knew the real story of what happened that night in my living room had to include all of us [the off-screen voices. her crew and herself], and so our question-reaction probes, our irritations and angers, as well as our laughter remain part of the film.” Bosley Crowther of “The New York Times” described it as a “curious and fascinating example of cinéma vérité, all the ramifications of which cannot be immediately known.” Legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman called it “the most extraordinary film I’ve seen in my life.” Thought to have been lost, a 16 mm print of the film was discovered at the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research in 2013 and has since been restored by the Academy Film Archive, Milestone Films and Modern Videofilm.’

You can read our review of Portrait Of Jason here, as well as the recent (but not very good) Jason & Shirley, which re-imagines what happened in Clarke’s apartment that night.

As well as Portrait Of Jason, the Library’s National Film Preservation Board has picked a mix of well-known and more esoteric films this year, with the former represented by the likes of LA Confidential, Ghosbusters, Top Gun and The Shawshank Redemption. The other side includes things such as Edison’s 1894 Kinetoscopic Record of a Sneeze, 1946’s John Henry and the Inky-Poo (one of the first animated films to cast African-American folklore in a positive light), the Disney’s produced 1946 educational short The Story of Menstruation (yes, by Disney), and the unusually titled 1968 production, Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One. You can read more about all this year’s chosen films here.

The Outs Season 2 Sneak Peek – First look at the new season of the gay-themed web show

December 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-outs-s2-sneak-peak-slideBack in October we posted about the fact that a second season of the gay-themed web show The Outs was set to be amongst the first of Vimeo’s bits of original programming. Now that’s been followed up with the first sneak peak of the new set of episode from the popular series.

Of Season 2 it’s previously been written that, ‘It’s been three years since the first season ended. During that time, Jack (Hunter Canning), Oona (Sasha Winters) and Mitchell (Adam Goldman) have gotten a little older, a little more tired, and the tiniest bit closer to figuring out what they want. Figuring out how to get it, though… that’s another story.’ And as you’ll see in the first clip, Oona has published a new book that she’s promoting. The show will debut in 2016.

You can take a look at The Outs Season 2 Sneak Peak below. You can also catch up with the first Season at theouts.com.

New Gods Of Egypt Trailer – Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau walk like Egyptians

December 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

god-of-egypt-trailer-slideWhen the first trailer for Gods Of Egypt debuted a few weeks ago, the main reaction was, ‘WTF’? That’s not just because it looked completely insane and weird, but also due to the fact all the Egyptian gods are played by white people (plus one token Black dude). The latter even resulted in the studio and director issuing an apology and saying they should have done better with the racial diversity.

While they may have admitted they should have done things differently, they’ve still got a movie to bring out, and so a new trailer has now arrived, which it has to be said suggests the film may actually have a few interesting things about it – although it’s still pretty nuts and white-washy. Take a look below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The survival of mankind hangs in the balance as an unexpected mortal hero Bek (Brenton Thwaites) undertakes a thrilling journey to save the world. In order to succeed, he must enlist the help of the powerful and vengeful god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in an unlikely alliance against Set (Gerard Butler), the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict.

‘As their breathtaking battle against Set and his henchmen takes them into the afterlife and across the heavens, both god and mortal must pass tests of courage and sacrifice if they hope to prevail in the epic final confrontation.’

The film is due out in 2016.
