US LGBT FIlm Distributor Wolfe Video Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary This June!

June 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

WolfeVideo-logo-vertBefore the term ‘queer cinema’ was coined in the 1990s, there were still gay-themed movies being made, and in the US in 1985 – at the height of the AIDS panic – a distributor was born that for the past 30 years has been helping bring LGBT movies to wider audiences.

Wolfe Releasing, the leading exclusive distributor of LBGT cinema, was founded thirty years ago this June. Wolfe was founded by entrepreneur/pioneer Kathy Wolfe to fill a political, cultural, and social need to provide films and videos for the LBGT community initially out of her garage distributing VHS tapes via mail order and LBGT bookstores. Within a few years, the company blossomed into a leading trailblazer in bringing LBGT content to the community, and has since expanded into the world’s biggest distributor of exclusive LBGT film and video – for all audiences worldwide.

By adapting early to technological shifts, they have remained the most successful exclusive distributor of LBGT content, and now provide media to audiences worldwide through the digital platforms, advocate for aggregating LBGT content on companies such as HULU, and continue to be the most savvy and successful industry executives in bringing hundreds of movie titles to audiences across the world – from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, from the urban meccas of the US to remote areas of South America.

“The impact Wolfe has had on the LGBT film landscape is immeasurable,” says Wolfe’s new president Jim Stephens. “Kathy and her team have played a crucial role in blazing the trail for LGBT stories to be created and shared with audiences for generations. Wolfe has remained an innovator in the rapidly changing distribution landscape, while also honoring its core mission: to inspire, entertain, and change the world through the power of film.”

“When we started Wolfe 30 years ago, there were really only a handful of gay films available and we were shipping VHS tapes to people across the US,” says founder and CEO Kathy Wolfe. “Today we deliver hundreds of movie titles to viewers around the world via our WolfeOnDemand.com streaming and download service — from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.”

Wolfe will be holding special events to mark its anniversary, including a presence at numerous LGBT festivals this summer and donating over 70 lesbian DVDs from the Wolfe collection to the June Mazer Lesbian Archives for their permanent collection.

Grandma Trailer – Lily Tomlin turns lesbian rocker going on a road trip (with Laverne Cox onboard too)

June 20, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lily-tomlin-julia-garner-grandmaAs if Lily Tomlin as a lesbian, bohemian grandmother wasn’t enough to ensure Grandma was worth a watch, the trailer also gives us the prospect of Laverne Cox as a tatooist plying her art on the comedienne.

In the film, ‘Self-described misanthrope Elle Reid (Tomlin) has her protective bubble burst when her 18-year-old granddaughter, Sage (Julia Garner), shows up needing help. The two of them go on a day-long journey that causes Elle to come to terms with her past and Sage to confront her future’

What that synopsis doesn’t mention is that the help Sage need is $600 to fund an abortion.

EW debuted the trailer, which you can take a look at below. Grandma reaches US cinemas on August 21st. [Read more…]

Tom Hanks To Play Hudson Hero Pilot In Clint Eastwood’s Next Film

June 20, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-hanksA couple of weeks ago it was announced that Clint Eastwood had found his next film, a movie about the Hero Of The Hudson, Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger.

Based on Sully’s memoir, Highest Duty: My Search For What Really Matters, the film will chronicle what made the pilot an American legend, when he was at the controls of a passenger plane which malfunctioned and was going to crash. However the Captain managed to bring the plane down into New York’s Hudson River.

Whenever a film about Sullenberger has been mentioned,  Tom Hanks’ name has emerged as the main person people thought should play him. Now it seems it’s going to happen, with the man himself in talks to star in the movie.

If he does sign on, it’s not clear when it will shoot, although Clint normally doesn’t need too long to prepare.

Crush Of The Day: Colton Haynes’ Shirtless Body Is Enough To Make You Sick!

June 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colton-haynes-shirtless-workout-pic

It’s simply not fair, why does Colton Haynes get to look like that with his shirt off while I look like a sack of potatoes (other than his rigorous sessions in the gym, proper eating and discipline, of course, which I can’t say I really do much of)?

While it’s enough to make you green with envy, it’s also very nice to look at, so we must thank the Arrow and Teen Wolf star for deciding to share the pic above on Instagram, to show how good he was looking on #workoutwednesday.

While he does look like we should all try to feed him a few hamburgers, that is one hell of a physique he’s got, and the face is pretty perfect too!

And please Colton, no matter what anyone tells you, never give up removing your shirt and taking pictures. And if you want to see a few more pics of that body, click here and here.

The Great, Gay-Inclusive 2003 Teen Flick Camp Is Getting A Sequel

June 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Camp-2003Although overlooked by many, those who know the 2003 movie Camp tend to love it, and it certainly has a bit of a cult following of people who enjoy not just its music but also how inclusive and affirming it is of everyone from the gay and the overweight, to the nerds and the genderqueer.

It’s also notable for being the screen debut of Anna Kendrick.

Now it may be getting a sequel, at least according to Camp’s writer and director, Todd Graff, who told Playbill, that’s he planning to make Camp 2: Freaks In Nature.

The original movie followed one summer at a musical theatre camp where things are shaken up by the arrival of something they rarely ever see – a popular, real-life straight boy. While filled great musical numbers, it’s also notable for being surprisingly gritty and taking on some unusual themes in ways that are exceptionally brave for a teen flick. However it sounds like the sequel will be rather different, although still containing renditions of a lot of classic Broadway tunes.

Graff says, “My problem with doing a sequel was that I didn’t want the lame, cheesy version where they come back as counselors. But I wanted to be able to use those actors. So, I hit on an idea that’s never been done before for a sequel. It doesn’t make any cheesy choices. They’re not counselors and, in fact, it’s completely meta. It’s as if Charlie Kaufman decided to write the sequel to Camp.”

He’s also hoping to get some Broadway lunimaries to show up (Stephen Sondheim cameo’d in the original), saying “There’s a fantasy musical number [version of] ‘Steppin’ to the Bad Side. So far I’ve gotten ‘yeses’ from Donna Murphy and Patti LuPone. Jerry Mitchell is going to choreograph it.”

As for why he thinks the original still resonates, Graff says, “It had universal themes of feeling like an outsider, finding a community, acceptance, people who are questioning their sexuality, dealing with body issues. That was relatable on the macro level. And then on the micro level, it got all the musical theater details right, so the people it was really about bought into it as well.”

Graff is hoping to get a few of the original cast back, although it’s not clear yet who. Presumably he’ll be crossing his fingers he can line them up before the crowdfunding attempt that he plans to launch soon, after he has workshopped some of the film at the Catskill Theatre Camp where the movie is set. Graff hopes to shoot next year. You can find out more at camp2themovie.com.

Uniquely Nasty Trailer – Taking a hard look at the US government’s war on gay people

June 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

uniquely-nastyOver the years gay people have certainly been maginalised, but for various reasons the extent of that marginalisation has often been overlooked or pushed to one side. For example, that’s certainly true of things such as the ‘Red Scare’ of the 1950s and 1960s in the US.

Many people know about the Hollywood blacklist, which was certainly egregious but only affected a relatively few people, but fewer are aware of the US government’s systematic witchhunt against gay people that happened in tandem with that, where people weren’t just told to be on the lookout for communists, but also for gay people, who it was claimed weren’t just more likely to be Reds, but also needed to be routed out from all ogvernment jobs because the were a ‘blackmail risk’.

Part of Yahoo!’s Viewfinder series, Uniquely Nasty, which features narration by Matt Bomer and George Takei, focuses on the decades of persecution LGBT faced at the hands the American government, including such things as McCarthy’s crusade against LGBT people in the 1950s.

Yahoo’s chief investigative correspondent Michael Isikoff told OUT that, ‘The film centers on Charles Francis, once a close friend of George W. Bush, who served as his emissary to the gay community in the 2000 campaign and then grew disillusioned in 2004 when the Bush re-election campaign used gay marriage as a wedge issue. It set Francis off on a mission to uncover “the deleted history” of the persecution of gays and lesbians by the U.S. government, and he has turned up some amazing documents about the FBI’s “sex deviates” program and other matters that we’ll be showing for the first time in the film.’

The film is due to air on Yahoo! on June 22nd. [Read more…]

Boulevard Trailer – Robin Williams plays a closeted gay man in his final movie

June 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boulevard-robin-williamsFor a while it looked like we migh never see Boulevard, as despite being Robin Williams’ final movie, no distributor seemed keen to pick it up. However now the film, which also stars Bob Odenkirk, Kathy Baker and Roberto Aguire, is due to open on July 10th in select cinemas in the US, and the trailer for the movie has arrived.

Williams will play Nolan Mack, who is a devoted husband but aware that he is actually gay and living a lie. Then, a run-in with a guarded young man forces Nolan to come to terms with his own secrets and begin to explore who he truly is.

Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) directs the movie, which had mixed reactions at festival screening, but should be worth a watch. [Read more…]

Sicario Trailer – Emily Blunt leads Denis Villeneuve’s new crime thriller

June 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sicario-slideWith Incendies, Prisoners and, to a lesser extent, Enemies, Denis Villenueve has shown he’s one of the most interesting directors around, and you’ve got to think teaming up with Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro for Sicario has to be a good idea.

Here’s the film’s synopsis: ‘In Mexico, SICARIO means hitman. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent [Emily Blunt] is enlisted by an elite government task force official [Josh Brolin] to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past [Benicio Del Toro], the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive. A Lionsgate presentation, a Black Label Media presentation, a Thunder Road production, a Denis Villeneuve film.’

Following it’s Cannes premiere it’s been getting some good reviews. You can take a look at the trailer below, with the film itself due in cinemas later this year. [Read more…]

Little Bi Peep (Review)

June 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Anna Shields, Sara Jecko, Leigh Strimbeck
Director: Jon Russell Cring, Anna Shields
Running Time: 78 mins
Certificate: NR

Emma (Anna Shields – who also wrote and co-directed the film) is a young woman who works in a sex shop. She also enjoys sleeping with both men and women as much as she can, but she isn’t one to get attached, partly because these fleeting bits of fun allow her to be whoever she wants to be – a teacher to one person, an artist to another – anything that isn’t someone stuck in a sex shop who doesn’t quite know what the next step to take is.

Into that comes Mason, a trans man who takes a shine to Emma, and to her own surprise, who Emma genuinely likes back, and who she starts to develop true feelings for. Despite her disarmingly honest approach to her sexual dalliances, Emma unsurprisingly finds it difficult to stay as detached from those around her as she might like, as some don’t like what she’s got to say even if she is just being honest, and that may come back to bite her.
