X-Men: Apocalypse Gets New Young Mutants In The Form Of Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner & Alexandra Shipp

January 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tye-sheridanX-Men: Apocalypse is starting to pull its new mutants together – or at least the younger versions of some old mutants. It’s been known that for the last few months Bryan Singer and the other producers have been looking for their youthful Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm.

Now they’ve found them, as Singer himself has revealed via Twitter, ‘Meet our new and brilliant young mutants: @Alexshipppp as #Storm @SophieT as #JeanGrey and @TyeSheridan as #Cyclops. #XmenApocalypse’

Deciphering that it means that Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) will play Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan (Joe) is starring as Cyclops and Alexandra Shipp (Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B) will take on Storm.

They will join the likes of Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult in the movie, who will be going up against Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse, an ancient mutant with extraordinary powers that dwarf those of most others. It will be set in the 1980s.

The film is due out May 2016.

Win The Award-Winning, Gay-Themed The Circle On DVD!

January 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-circle-dvd-coverAlthough The Circle sadly missed out on a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination (it was Switzerland’s official entry), it’s won plenty of other gongs, including the Golden Teddy at the Berlin Film Festival, given to the best LGBT-themed movie at the fest.

Now it’s heading to DVD in the UK on January 26th, courtesy of Matchbox Films, and we’ve teamed up with them to give away three copies of the docudrama.

Zürich in the mid-1950s: The young shy teacher Ernst Ostertag becomes a member of the gay organization Der Kreis. There he gets to know the transvestite star Röbi Rapp – and immediately falls head over heels in love with him. Röbi and Ernst live through the high point and the eventual decline of the organisation, which, in the whole Europe, is seen as the symbol of gay emancipation. Ernst finds himself torn between his “bourgeois” existence and his commitment to homosexuality, for Röbi it is about his first serious love relationship. A relationship which will last a lifetime. From the present, the film looks back to the time when the “Mother” of all European homosexual organisations had its high point until it fell apart. While the repression against homosexuals became increasingly more intense in Zurich, two young and very different men fight for their love and – together with their friends – for gay rights.

To be in with a chance of winning one of the three copies of The Circle the we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on February 5th, 2015, so get answering and good luck! [Read more…]

India Sees Protests Against ‘Transphobic’ Movie I

January 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Shankar-i-movieIndia has a long history of transgender people, with the transfeminine population often known as hijra. However in the caste system, the hijra were normally seen as the lowest of the low and were therefore shunned, shuttered away and kept silent. However in recent years they’ve found more of a voice, including getting official recognition of a third gender (which is what many of them identify as).

Now this growing voice has seen some of them out on the streets protesting a movie called I, from the popular director Shankar Shanmugham.

As reported by Gay Star News, ‘In the offending scene, a transgender make-up artist played by Ojas Rajini makes overtly sexual advances on the lead actor Vikram, who rebuffs her after finding out her gender identity. He then sings and dances around her while she suggestively eats a sausage and she  joins the villains to plot her revenge.’

Anger at the offending scenes resulted in 35 transgender activists gathering outside the offices of the Censor Board offices demanding an apology and the removal of the scenes.

“We want Shankar to remove those scenes from the film. It belittles our community,” transgender TV personality Rose Venkatesan told the Indo-Asian News Service. “The way Shankar has portrayed Ojas’s character makes us look like some sex-starved individuals.”

The protests have had the effect of generating real controversy and even caused the director to hire police protection after protesters staged sit-ins outside his house.

However the actor who played the controversial role, Ojas Rajani, has defended both the director and the movie, releasing a statement saying, “Shankar didn’t try to demean my character of a transgender. In fact, he shot it so aesthetically that it doesn’t offend anybody, including the transgender community. It’s just part of a story of the film and I requested everybody to not get offended.”

The offending scenes sound similar to the way gay people have previously been presented in many western films – both as figures of fun and as sexually incontinent – but which thankfully most of the time we’ve moved past. However it looks like in India there’s still a way to go for the depiction of transgender people.

King of Escape Trailer – Take a look at the gay-themed movie from the director of Stranger By The Lake

January 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

King-of-Escape-slideStranger By The Lake is one of the best gay-themed thrillers ever made (if you haven’t seen it, you really should), but it wasn’t Alain Guiraudie first look at all things gay, as back in 2009 he made King Of Escape.

However other than a couple of festival appearances, it never made it to the UK, but with the success of Stranger By The Lake, Peccadillo Pictures has decided it’s time to rectify that, setting a March 23rd DVD release for the movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A film about tractors, aphrodisiacs and forbidden love from Alain Guiraudie, the Cannes Award Winning director of STRANGER BY THE LAKE.

‘Armand is a gay tractor salesman and not the sharpest tool in the shed. When he rescues Curly, the daughter of his greatest rival, the two embark on a mad chase through the forest pursued by a very angry father with a gun. Totally unknown to Armand, however, is the bizarre sexual frenzy he’s ignited in the other men in town, with him as the object of their desire!

‘Hilarious, daring and outrageously controversial, KING OF ESCAPE is a riotous French sex comedy about raising cocks in rural France.’

Things Get Steamy Between James Franco, Zachary Quinto & Charlie Carver In New I Am Michael Pics

January 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

i-am-michael-new-pic1With the Sundance Film Festival about the kick off, a lot of indie filmmakers are preparing to show off their movies for the first time, and that includes Justin Kelley, who’s taking I Am Michael to Robert Redford’s Utah-based fest.

With the premiere only a few days away, a new batch of images have arrived, some of which show things getting a bit sexy, including James Franco kissing Zachary Quinto (of as Franco describes him on Facebook, ‘the legendary’ Zachary Quinto). However the one that’s really likely to get your pulse racing is one of the ones below that features a threesome between Franco, Quinto and Teen Wolf star Charlie Carver.

Rumours of the threesome scene have already surfaced, with it previously described as ‘very hot’, with trio  ‘intertwined and kissing’, and that ‘You see their asses.‘

Based on a true story, in I Am Michael, James Franco plays Michael Glatze, who went from being a prominent gay rights advocate to becoming one of the poster-boys for the ex-gay movement when he found God, renounced his homosexuality and married a woman. Quinto plays Glatze’s onetime boyfriend, with Emma Roberts, Darryl Hannah and, of course Charlie Carver, also starring. [Read more…]

Zac Efron On For Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

January 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zac-efron-slideZac Efron is finally properly growing up and finding him niche in slightly bawdy comedies (after romances and drama didn’t quite help him shake his High School Musical image). After That Awkward Moment and Bad Neighbours, he’s now got a new one, as Variety reports he’s set to star in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.

Jake Szymanski is on board to direct the comedy, which ‘follows two brothers who place an online ad to find dates for a wedding and the ad goes viral’.

The people behind the movie are now looking for someone to play the brother, and it sounds like it’ll be a case of mismatched siblings, as Variety reports that they are ‘hopeful that this film has similar results as when Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy teamed up for The Heat’.

There’s no news on when it might shoot.

Kaya Scodelario Eyed For Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Female Lead

January 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kaya-scodelarioThe Pirates certainly have a formula – Jack Sparrow, young guy, young woman and a supernatural villain. It doesn’t look like they’ll be breaking away from that with the fifth film, as Johnny Depp will once again be Jack, Brenton Thwaites is the young guy, and Javier Bardem will be a bad guy ghost.

Now it’s time to find the young woman, with Deadline reporting that Maze Runner’s Kaya Scodelario is in early talks to take on the female lead and love interest for Thwaites British soldier.

Not too much is known about the plot of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, other than that Bardem will be a murderous ghost called Captain Brand, who’s seeking revenge for his brother.

Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rø (Kon-Tiki) will directing from a script by Jeff Nathanson (Men in Black 3, Tower Heist). Filming starts next month in Australia, with a July 7th, 2017 release date already set.

Kidnapping Mr. Heineken Trailer – Sam Worthington & Jim Sturgess take Anthony Hopkins hostage

January 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kidnapping-Mr.-Heineken-slideUnfortunately Rutger Hauer is not enough. Back in 2011 he starred in the Dutch movie The Heineken Kidnapping, but now the same true story is getting an English-language makeover and Rutger has been replaced by Anthony Hopkins.

Kidnapping Mr. Heineken tells the tale of Freddy Heineken, lager magnate and a man not short of spare change. In 1983 he was abducted and held in a grotty cell for 21 days before his kidnapper’s ransom demands were met – the biggest ransom ever for a single person. Upon being released, a traumatised Heineken used his unlimited wealth to help the police track down his abductors and bring them to justice.

Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess, Ryan Kwanten, Mark van Eeuwen and Thomas Cocquerel also star as those who hatch the kidnapping plot. Daniel Alfredson (who helmed two of the original Millennium Trilogy films) directs.

First Pics Of Leonardo DiCaprio In The Revenant Surface

January 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

revenant-pic1The Revenant certainly doesn’t sound like your typical Leo DiCaprio film, but it’s certainly intriguing, and the fact it has Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Birdman, Babel) behind the camera also bodes extremely well.

Now the first couple of pics from the movie have arrived via EW, featuring a bearded and rather grubby DiCaprio alongside Inarritu.

Leo plays the central role in the based-on-a-true-story story, as 1820s fur trader Hugh Glass. He gets mauled by a grizzly bear and then to make matters worse he is robbed and left for dead. Glass manages to survive and sets off on a quest for vengeance against those who robbed him.

Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, and Domnhall Gleeson also star.

The director adds of the movie, “It’s a fun ride. It’s a very experimental thing that we’re doing here… I’m now addicted to doing things that can fail horribly or maybe that can give us a surprise. We are all into it.”

Felicity Jones & Rooney Mara Testing For Star Wars Spinoff Testing

January 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

felicity-jonesWhen Disney bought Lucasfilm they quickly announced not just that they would produce a new trilogy continuing the main Star Wars story arc, but that in the years between those films would be standalone movies. One of those even has a director – Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards –  and it’s even gotten to the point where they’re starting to look at actors.

According to THR, Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Rooney Mara (Pan) and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) are all set to test for the female lead. However it’s still not known what character they would be playing.

Previous rumours have suggested it would be everything from an origin story for Boba Fett to the tale of a young Han Solo when he was mixed up with a group of space pirates. However if they’re trying to find the female lead first, those rumours could be completely wrong.

It’s suggested that other actresses have also tested, but it’s not clear who, although it appears the early part of the search took place in Britain, before moving to the US. Felicity Jones is apparently high on the want list, but there may be complications with scheduling due to the fact she’s due to shoot Ron Howard’s Inferno this year.

Expect to hear more soon.

Crowdfunding Campaign For Girl on Girl: A Film About Lesbian Visibility Launched

January 20, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

girl-on-girl-indiegogoWe haven’t had a crowdfuding campaign on BGPS for a few weeks, but now one has arrived, as the documentary Girl on Girl: A Film About Lesbian Visibility is seeking $25,000 to cover much of the completely costs.

The doc will focus on seven women, from New York, Florida, Utah, and North Carolina, including ‘celesbian’ Lauren Bedford Russell (The Real L Word: Season 3).

So what the film about? Well, director Jodi Savitz recently told Huffpo, “I developed “Girl on Girl: An Original Documentary” to call attention not only to the fact that feminine lesbians are legitimate but to the fact that we make up a thriving subset of the LGBTQ community. The film’s emphasis on community solidarity will help build a network for women and girls who are just coming out and who aren’t naturally inclined to alter their appearance to fit masculine stereotypes of “what a lesbian looks like.”

“Never before has feminine lesbian invisibility been discussed on such a large scale, and never has it been so important to make the conversation happen. Without popular, positive representation, feminine lesbians will continue to feel delegitimized and isolated and will continue to not be taken seriously by skeptics.

“To many, real feminine lesbians do not exist beyond fiction and porn. The bigger picture: the LGBTQ community cannot afford to lose the faces of these women in the midst of a civil rights movement.”

The money will be used to cover things such as funding for travel and to shoot interviews out-of-state, camera rentals and sound equipment, and a post-production crew to edit and complete the film. The makers says they’ve already been offered slots at several film festivals.

Watch the trailer below and head over to IndieGoGo to find out more and give some cash. [Read more…]
