mother! (Blu-ray Review) – Is the Jennifer Lawrence movie audaciously impressive or completely crazy?

January 21, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson
Director: Darren Aronofsky
Running Time: 121 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: January 22nd 2018 (UK)

There’s rarely been as big a divide between critics and audiences as there was with mother!. While it’s got a decent 69% from critics on RottenTomatoes, on its US release it got a rare ‘F’ CinemaScore, based on audience reaction. Only 19 films have ever been given such a low rating. Watching the film you can understand why, because audience members who typically just watch typical Hollywood fare almost certainly had no idea what they were getting into, and probably ended up very confused about what they’d just seen.

This is not your typical multiplex movie, but it was given a wide release and marketing that suggested it was a relatively mainstream-style horror flick. What it really is though is an auteur-fuelled, rather experimental arthouse movie, filled with allegory and surreal, Bunuel-esque touches, but done on a big budget and starring the biggest actress in the world right now. Welcome To The Dollhouse & Princess Diaries’ Heather Matarazzo Gets Engaged To Her Girlfriend

January 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Actress Heather Matarazzo is now an engaged woman, as she’s popped the question to her girlfriend, actress and comedian, Heather Turman. Matarazzo announced the news in an Instragram post, saying, ‘“There is only that moment, and the incredible certainty that everything under the sun has been written by one hand only. It is the hand that evokes love, and creates a twin soul for every person in the world. Without such love, ones dreams would have no meaning.”-The Alchemist

‘We kept this to ourselves for a few days, but on 1-11, I asked…..and she said yes. To death and back, I love you, Turman. #twinflame #engaged #thealchemist’

Heather Matarazzo first came to prominence as a 13-year-old in Todd Solondz’s acclaimed, Welcome To The Dollhouse. Since then she’s appeared in the likes of The Devil’s Advocate, Scream 3, Saved!, and Hostel: Part II. She’s best known to many for playing Lilly Moscovitz in The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2. She came out as a lesbian while she was promoting the last of those movies, back in 2004.

Turman meanwhile had a small role in La La Land and most recently collaborated with Matarazzo on Jillian Armenante’s Stuck.

The duo apparently got engaged on January 11th, but waited a few days to announce the news. There’s no news on when they might get hitched.

Good luck to both of them! [Read more…]

The more the two fall in love, the more the realities of loving someone who is a different person every 24 hours takes a toll, leaving Rhiannon and “A” to face the hardest decision either has ever had to make.’

New Tomb Raider Trailer – Alicia Vikander goes into action as Lara Croft

January 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Videogame to movie adaptations don’t exactly have a great reputation, and the Angelina Jolie Tomb raider movies have been reviled by many. However, Hollywood has decided it’s worth having another go, with Alicia Vikander stepping into Lara Croft’s boots.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen.  Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class.  Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone.

Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan.  But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous.  Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown.  If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.’

Take a look at the new trailer below. The movie will be in UK cinemas on March 16th. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: Ultra Bleu – A young man faces a breakup, plus the sequel needs your help

January 16, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not often a LGBT-themed short film gets a sequel, but filmmaker/actor Nick Neon is busy putting together a follow-up to his successful short, Ultra Bleu, which will follow more of the adventures of Jimmy Park. To help with post-production and film festival costs on that sequel – called Zero One – Nick has launched a Kickstarter in the hope of raising $10,000.

It’s a good opportunity then to catch up with where it all started. Ultra Bleu, which was inspired by Neon’s own experiences of being left by his French boyfriend while living in South Korea, follows ’20something + lost, Jimmy Park, for the first 24-hours after a violent break up with his now ex-boyfriend and how a chance meeting with a stranger reveals deeper issues he must confront while living in Seoul.’

The upcoming sequel meanwhile is set, ‘one month after the events of Ultra Bleu. Jimmy Park is visiting home for the first time in four years, and is deeply questioning the choices he has made with his life. Both his dysfunctional family and his own generation’s inability to foster intimate relationships only serve to further his sense of disconnect.’

You can watch Ultra Bleu below, and if you like what you see, head over to Kickstarter to help out.

Sebastian Trailer – Forbidden love for two men in the romantic gay-themed movie

January 16, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Normally when a short film gets expanded into a movie, it’s the same director behind the camera. Interestingly though, with Sebastian it’s the short film’s writer and star, James Fanizza, who steps into the director’s shoes. Now the movie is heading towards its release.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Sebastian (Alex House) arrives in the city on a one week visit and meets his cousin’s boyfriend, Alex (writer-director, James Fanizza). Instant attraction leads Alex and Sebastian to explore a forbidden passion and they connect deep in emotion. When Sebastian has to go back to Argentina, will their affair continue? This intimate feature debut from James Fanizza features Brian “Katya” McCook from The Trixie and Katya Show and Rupaul’s Drag Race.’

Wolfe Video is set to release the movie in the US on DVD and VoD on February 6th. However, to get a taste of the romantic movie, you can watch the trailer below. [Read more…]

New Love, Simon Trailer – Nick Robinson is a gay kid coming of age in the closet

January 16, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In mainstream movies, the only films that get gay lead characters tend to be prestige dramas that are attempting to get Oscars. However, Love Simon is something a bit special, as it’s a teen coming of age movie that’s getting a release by 20th Century Fox (and was made under their Fox 2000 banner), and happens to be about a young gay man.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it’s a little more complicated: he’s yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Directed by Greg Berlanti (Dawson’s Creek, Brothers & Sisters), written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger (This is Us), and based on Becky Albertalli’s acclaimed novel, LOVE, SIMON is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love.’

The film is due in cinemas in US cinemas on March 16th, before arriving in the UK on April 8th. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Coco (Cinema Review) – Pixar takes us into the Mexican Day of the Dead

January 16, 2018 By George Elcombe Leave a Comment

Starring: Anthony Gonzalez, Gael Garcia Bernal, Benjamin Bratt
Director: Lee Unkrich
Running Time: 109 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: January 19th 2018 (UK)

Pixar have an amazing track record for producing excellent films that are both commercial successes and critically praised. As I write this I haven’t seen a film released by them that I would consider bad, and this sets them apart from all the other studios producing computer animated films.

One reason for Pixar’s strength is the fearlessness of creating unique worlds and telling self-contained stories without the desire to build franchises. Yes, I know that a few of their films have spawned sequels (and a prequel), but unlike a lot of studios in general they take their time with each project and spend it developing the story at its heart. As such one of my most anticipated films of 2018 is The Incredibles 2, and as long as Pixar continue not to rush their projects in order to reach release dates, then I welcome all of their future films with open arms.
