20 Feet From Stardom (DVD Review)

July 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Darlene Love, Judith Hill, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Bette Milder
Director: Morgan Neville
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 21st 2014 (UK)

Often the best documentaries are about subjects you’re kind of aware of in the background of your life, but you’ve never really thought that much about them. Indeed that’s almost the definition of the subjects of 20 Feet From Stardom – the back-up singers who’ve featured on all sorts of well-known songs, but whose name rarely gets on the record cover.

For example, the documentary features the guy who provided the opening riff of The Lion King. And you can call me an idiot, but it was the first time I’d actually thought that someone actually had to record what has become one of the most famous opening moments in cinema, and we’ve never seen his face [Read more…]

Yves Saint Laurent (DVD Review)

July 21, 2014 By Matt Peake 1 Comment

Director: Jalil Lespert
Running Time: 106 mins
Certificate: 15

Yves Saint Laurent tells the story of one of fashion’s greatest legends. Directed by Jalil Lespert (Tell No One) and starring Pierre Niney (La Comédie Francaise) in the title role, this visually sumptuous film begins in Paris, 1957. The film charts YSL’s career from his early years at Dior in the late 1950s through to his iconic Ballet Russes collection of 1976. The world of late 1950s is perfectly captured with elegant Dior designs, stylish models and a jazz score that matches the chic Parisian apartments the fashionistas inhabit. [Read more…]

Futurama – Season 7 (Blu-ray Review)

July 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, Phil LaMarr, Lauren Tom
Director: Various
Running Time: 269 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 21st 2014 (UK)

We’re a bit behind with Futurama in the UK. While Season 7 started in 2012 in the US, we’ve only just had it on TV in the UK, quickly followed by this home entertainment release. To make things a little more confusing, this release has 13 episodes, although officially the US Season 7 has 26 instalments. However it was split in two in both countries and so we’ve still got more episodes to come in Britain. That may sound annoying, but as the show has now been cancelled (again), it is good to know us Brits have a few new episodes before the end of Futurama finally comes. [Read more…]

Tiger Orange (Outfest Review)

July 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Frankie Valenti, Mark Strano, Gregory Marcel
Director: Wade Gasque
Running Time: 75 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: July 18th 2014 (World Premiere)

The gay-themed drama Tiger Orange premiered a couple of days ago at LA’s Outfest, and luckily we got a preview of the movie.

Normally when you hear that a gay-themed film has a porn star as one of its actors, it seems like stunt casting that cares more about hinting at titillation than because that performer is the right person for the job. However Tiger Orange challenges that by having Frankie Valenti – aka gay porn star Johnny Hazzard – in one of the lead roles and giving him the space to give an extremely creditable performance. The Lego Movie (Blu-ray Review)

July 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Ferrell, Charlie Day, Morgan Freeman

Running Time: 100 mins

When it was first announced that they were gonna make a Lego film there was a collective groan around the world – although that largely came from those who knew Lego years ago and weren’t aware of how its grown. Now there are all sorts of popular ranges, TV shows and incredibly successful computer games – it’s certainly not just a load of blocks in box anymore.

When the movie arrived in cinemas, all those who’d pre-judged it to be a desperate cash-grab had to eat their words, as the movie is very good and very funny, which helped it to a worldwide gross of over $465 million. Now it’s come to home ent. and if you missed it in theatres, you need to check it out now. [Read more…]

Apropos Of Nothing: Its Naked Sunbathing Time For Gymnast Louis Smith & Footballer Nicklas Bendtner

July 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nicklas-bendtner-louis-smithSummer has finally hit the UK, and so to take advantage of the six minutes each year when Britain is genuinely warm, it appears everyone has been out sunbathing naked, and to mark the momentous occasion, they’ve posted pics on Instagram to prove it.

Well, at least two people have done that – and thankfully they’re both hot sportsmen. The first is Bronze and Silver Olympic medal winning Olympic gymnast Louis Smith, who as you can see below has been stripping off, soaking in the rays and having a drink.

Underneath him (not literally) there’s former Arsenal and Danish international footballer Nicklas Bendtner, with only what appears to be a bra to cover his modesty. Perhaps they do things differently in Denmark, but someone ought to tell him it’s not testicular support that bras are supposed to provide.

Take a look at the pics the athletes posted on Instagram below (and thanks to SoSoGay for the heads up). [Read more…]

Coffee Talk Web Series – Gay college friends deal with the world of being LGBT

July 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

coffee-talk-web-seriesAnother gay-themed web series has come to our attention and it’s one you might want to catch up with. Each episode is fairly short, but filled with humour and witty looks at gay life.

So far six episodes have been made, but only four are online, as the latest two, ‘Sugar Daddy’ and ‘Gay Marriage’ are being submitted to film festivals, with the hope they can gain a bit of recognition and a wider audience there. Hopefully they’ll be released online soon.

However you can take a look at the first four eps below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Coffee Talk is about gay college friends confronting hot-button issues over a cup of coffee: tattoos, gays in sports, feminine men, gay dads, sugar daddies, gay marriage… When emotions emerge and personal secrets are revealed, the discussion quickly goes in an unexpected direction, ending in a funny gag. The web series seeks to develop awareness about gay topics in an entertaining way, and is subtitled in major languages. Enjoy watching the videos right here on skyriderfilms.com!’ [Read more…]

Camp Abercorn Web Series Trailer – Highlighting the US Scouts’ ban on gay leaders

July 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

camp-abercornA new web series is on the horizon, Camp Abercorn, which has launched an IndieGoGo campaign to fund its planned seven episodes. And to give us a taste we can take a look at the trailer posted below.

The show, created by Jeffrey Simon, includes a look at the issues surrounding the Boy Scouts Of America’s ban on gay leaders. It’s a subject that’s close to home for Simon, as he was an Eagle Scout until he came out when he was 19 and left.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Camp Abercorn is a dramatic web series about the blunders and the victories—an authentic portrayal of life on camp staff. For ten weeks each summer Camp Abercorn becomes a bustling wonderland of activity for boys, guided by their fearless leaders—the camp staff.

To tell our stories we’ve created the Compass Guides of America, a fictional organization that parallels the Boy Scouts of America, an organization that we regard with the utmost respect and appreciation because we were Scouts, too.’

On its IndieGoGo page, the makers says the mission is: ‘With the BSA’s recent change in membership policy, youth members are no longer excluded based on sexual orientation, but parents and adult volunteers are still discriminated against. This chasm has created a question that needs to be answered.

‘What happens when a gay Scout turns eighteen? You can help us answer this question, and maybe even change the future. While this is a big inspiration for the show, it’s not the only story we’re telling, not by a long shot.’

I should end this by saying that I have a friend who works for the Scouts in the UK, and he’s always keen to point out that while there’s still discrimination in the US Scouts, there are no such issues in Britain, where LGBT Scouts and leaders are more than welcome (apparently they get quite a few calls and letters from people who hear about the situation in the US and assume Scouts is the same all across the world).

Take a look at the Camp Abercorn trailer below and head over to IndieGoGo if you want to help out.

Beyonce Teases The Fifty Shades Of Grey Trailer

July 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fifty-shades-pic1The first thing anyone thinks of when they hear the name Beyoncé is kinky S&M sex and master-slave relationships. No? Well that might change a little now as the singer is the person who’s been chosen to tease the trailer for the Fifty Shades Of Grey movie.

Take a look at it below.

As you can see, we don’t get to see a lot, but it’s certainly intrigued us about Thursday’s full trailer. It’ll be interested to see exactly what we get to see then, as people are inevitably going to be interested in the sex, but you can’t show an awful lot of that in most trailers – unless they’re going full red-band.

The movie follows 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey (Dornan) and his S&M filled affair with young college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). Jennifer Ehle, Victor Rasuk, Eloise Mumford and Max Martini also star. Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing from a script by Kelly Marcel, Patrick Marber and Mark Bomback.

It’s due out February 13th 2015. [Read more…]
