Comedian Shows What Happens ‘If Gay Guys Said The S**t Straight People Say’

May 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Most LGBT people have faced questions about their sexuality that are pretty dumb, as well as having to deal with times when something apparently becomes ‘so gay’ to straight people just because it escaped from their lips.

However Comedian Daniel-Ryan Spaulding is out to challenge that, showing us that actually what it looks like ‘If Gay Guys Said The Shit Straight People Say’.

Although I think some of the questions he takes on actually more innocuous that he presents them here – after all, I don’t see being asked when you knew you were gay being such a terrible thing – he’s spot on with a lot of them. That’s especially true of those things that seem to want to paint all LGBT as a particular thing, based on the straight person’s preconceptions.

It’s not 100% original, but it is pretty funny. [Read more…]

X-Men Director Bryan Singer Seeks To Get Sex-Abuse Lawsuit Dismissed

May 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bryan-SingerAs his lawyer had promised to do, Bryan Singer has now filed a motion to have the sex-abuse lawsuit against him summarily dismissed, according to THR. He is hoping the whole thing will go away, citing alack of jurisdiction.

His accuser, Michael Egan, filed the lawsuit in Hawaii, alleging much of the abuse took place there. While Egans said other abuse took place in California, the statute of limitations in California prevented a case being filed there, while Hawaii had a statute amnesty that allowed him to sue there until the the end of April.

Soon after the allegations surface though, evidence emerged from Egan’s sex abuse lawsuit against two other men back in 2003, where in a sworn deposition he said that he’d “never had any trips outside the continental U.S.” He is then said to have specifically been asked about Hawaii and he confirmed he’d never been there. And if no abuse took play place in Hawaii, he can’t sue there.

Indeed Egan’s earlier statements are causing problems for cases he’s brought against three other men as well. For example he’s also sued David Neuman, but in 2003 he specifically said that he’d “never had any kind of physical contact” with Neuman and that the former Disney TV president had “never acted improperly.”

Singer’s motion reserves the right to seek sanctions against Egan’s lawyer, Jerry Hernan. In fact Singer’s lawyer, Marty Singer [no relation] has certainly not held back from attacking Hernan, painting him as a gold-digger out to destroy people despite a lack of evidence (allegedly).

So far, Hernan’s only response to Singer’s dismissal motion is to say, “I do have a response, but I am restricted in that I can only talk about what is in the court record. Many of the things being reported are being taken out of context or you’re only hearing one side of the story. At the appropriate time and in the appropriate venue, we will respond.”

That will presumably be on July 28th, when the judge is due to officially hear the motion. It’s certainly not a slam-dunk that Bryan Singer will be successful in getting the charges dismissed, as the judge may feel that if Egan now says he was in Hawaii, that’s enough to allow a trial where there will be a fuller disclosure of facts and any explanation of the discrepancies. However with the publicity and pressure surrounding the case, she may decide that nipping it in the bud is the best idea, especially if she feels there’s no realistic prospect of Egan winning (at least on fair grounds).

While all this is still hanging over Bryan Singer’s head, he can at least take solace in the fact many expect his new movie, X-Men: Days Of Future Past, to have a $100 million plus US opening this weekend.

Orange is the New Black Writer Says The Show Helped Her Realise She Is Gay

May 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

orange-is-the-new-black-bd-coverMuch has been written about how wonderfully LGBT friendly Orange Is The New Black is – including recently on this site – and that side of the show got very personal for one of the writers, Lauren Morelli, as she says working on the Netflix series helped her realise she was gay, even though she’d recently married a man.

Writing on Policymic, she says “[From my] first episode of Orange, my life fell into a parallel rhythm with Piper’s story in a way that went from interesting to terrifying in a matter of months”.

“The sound stage for Orange, where we proudly employ what has to be at least 64% of lesbians in the New York City metro area, is not a place where you can shy away from women or sexuality.

“As we started to shape our characters and debate fictional Piper’s ‘true’ sexuality that first season, we engaged in long discussions about sex, gender and our own experiences.

“I was finally forced to consider a question that had never, ever occurred to me before: Holy shit, am I gay?

“While it certainly would have been disorienting to begin to question my sexuality after three decades of knowing myself, it was particularly blinding because I’d gotten married only a few months before.

“It’s now a punch in the gut every time I have to say, ‘I’m getting divorced because I’m gay’. It’s a sentence I’ve said approximately 5,223 times in the last six months.

“I am now out to my family, my friends and most of my co-workers on Orange.

“Now, when I am in the writers’ room or on set, I no longer feel like I am stuck in the middle of two truths.

“I belong because my own narrative fits in alongside the fictional stories that we are telling on the show: stories of people finding themselves, of difficult paths and of redemption.”

Big Hero 6 Teaser Trailer – Plus a poster for the Disney & Marvel movie

May 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Big Hero 6 is one of the first proper fusion’s between Disney and Marvel, it’s only now that we’re properly getting a look at the movie with a teaser trailer and a poster, which you can see right here.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘With all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Big Hero 6” is an action-packed comedy-adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius—thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tamago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery.

‘Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action, “Big Hero 6” is directed by Don Hall (“Winnie the Pooh”) and Chris Williams (“Bolt”), and produced by Roy Conli (“Tangled”). The film hits UK cinemas in 3D on January 30th, 2015. ‘ [Read more…]

Skylar Astin & Ben Platt Are Coming Back For Pitch Perfect 2

May 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

skylar-astinFor a while now we’ve known that nearly all the Pitch Perfect ladies would return for the sequels, but while Skylar Astin has suggested he’d return, it’s only now that he’s signed on to reprise his role as Jesse Pitch Perfect 2, according to Deadline.

He’s not the only one either, as Ben Platt – who plays Benji – has tweeted a picture from the set showing he’s back too. And who’s he got with him? Well, Skylar Astin of course. You can see that pic below.

Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Elizabeth Banks, Anna Camp and Adam DeVine reprise their roles from Pitch Perfect, with Hailee Steinfeld coming on board as a new character who’s being set up as a potential lead for future sequels.

And the reason they’ll need a new lead is that it’s believed this film will follow Kendrick and Wilson’s characters through to their graduation.

Elizabeth Banks is directing from a script by Kay Cannon. Pitch Perfect 2 is due out May 2015.

What better way to spend my first day on set for #PitchPerfect2 than by doing a scene with my roomie @SkylarAstin. pic.twitter.com/WM9yH7y0qh

Benedict Cumberbatch & Adam Scott Join Johnny Depp In Black Mass

May 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Benedict-CumberbatchBenedict Cumberbatch is the new Guy Pearce, or at least he is in Black Mass, as THR reports that he’s taking over from the Aussie actor in the Whitey Bulger biopic.

He will play Whitey Bulger’s brother Billy, the former President of the Massachusetts State Senate.

James ‘Whitey’ Bulger (Johnny Depp) was a Boston criminal who ended up becoming an FBI informant, with the help of his longtime friend and FBI agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) and his brother (Cumberbatch). However Whitey didn’t completely turn good guy, as his tips to the feds were mainly about getting rid of his mob competition.

When Connolly tipped Bulger off that the feds were planning on double-crossing him, the criminal went into hiding for more than a decade, rising to the top of the FBI’s Most Wanted list before he was eventually caught in 2011 while hiding out in Santa Monica, California.

Billy was never implicated in Whitey’s criminal activities, but his political opponents inevitably tried to use his brother’s reputation against him.

Adam Scott has also signed on to be FBI agent Robert Fitzpatrick

Cumberbatch is a bit of a last-minute replacement as shooting is currently under way in Boston.

Orange Is The New Black – Season 1 (Blu-ray Review)

May 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon, Jason Biggs, Laverne Cox, Kate Mulgrew
Director: Various
Running Time: 700 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 19th 2014 (UK)

When Netflix first announced it was going to make TV-style series, few people expected much. After all, most previous web content that stretched beyond a few minutes was absolutely dreadful. However the subscription-based internet upstart has proved they can equal or even better the US networks, with House Of Cards winning Golden Globes and Emmys, while Orange Is The New Black took TV Program Of The Year at the AFI Awards and received almost universal acclaim.

Loosely based on an acclaimed memoir, the 13 episodes of Season 1 follows Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), who’s been sentenced to a term in prison for transporting drug money and is just about to enter a US women’s federal penitentiary. That means leaving behind her nice, middle-class life and her fiancé (Jason Biggs) and going to a place she knows nothing about. [Read more…]

First Clip From Gay-Themed Miners’ Strike Brit Flick Pride Arrives

May 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago the first image from the gay-themed British movie Pride arrived, along with the news it will close the Directors’ Fortnight at the 2014 International Cannes Film Festival on 23rd May.

With just a couple of days to go until that premiere, the first clip from the movie has arrived (via Pathe France’s Youtube channel), which you can watch above.

The movie is set during the summer of 1984, when Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike.  At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.

But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go direct to the miners.  They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.

Director Matthew Warchus (best known for his theatre work such as Matilda: The Musical and God of Carnage) has also written a piece for The Guardian, talking about why he wanted to make the film – which was not least because the picket lines of the Miner’s Strike were part of the background of his youth. It’s well worth a read. [Read more…]

Ryan Murphy Says Mark Ruffalo & Matt Bomer Were ‘Terrified’ Of Their Normal Heart Sex Scenes

May 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s just a few days until The Normal Heart debuts in the US (unfortunately it still doesn’t seem clear when those in the UK will get to see it), and the movie’s stars and director have been out in force to promote it.

That include Ryan Murphy, who helmed the movie, as he’s been talking (via HuffPo) about the movie and says that the sex scenes were particularly problematic. He’s says that initially Matt Bomer and Mark Ruffalo were both actors were ‘terrified’ of the scenes, as neither had done anything like it before.

“Mark, I believe, had never kissed a guy, ever, on camera,” Murphy says. “And he had certainly never had that level of sexuality. And I don’t think Matt had either. So I had a gay actor [Bomer] and a straight actor [Ruffalo]. And they were both terrified. But I just threw them into it.”

To get it right they even hire an on-set sex choreographer.

On the first day of shooting Murphy decided to challenge the guys, filming a scene that involves Ruffalo coming of a sauna where two guys are going at it. He walk by Bomer, pretty much ignoring him, as Bomer looks on lasciviously.

“We shot that almost as an homage to the bathhouse ads they used to run in New York in the early ’80s,’ he says. ‘So we just got into it, man. We just got into it. And they were nervous but they were game. They knew it was an important part of the story. They went for it.”

You can hear the full interview below and watch a new clip from The Normal Heart above.
