Tim Blake Nelson In Talks For Fantastic Four

May 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tim-blake-nelsonTim Blake Nelson is joining the club of people who’ve played more than one character in superhero movies. After being Samuel Sterns (aka The Leader) in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, now THR reports that he’s in final talks to star as Harvey Elder in the The Fantastic Four reboot.

He joins Miles Teller as Reed Richards (aka Mr. Fantastic), Kate Mara as his girlfriend Sue Storm (aka Invisible Woman), Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm (aka The Thing), and Michael B. Jordan as Sue’s brother Johnny (aka The Human Torch). Toby Kebbell is set to be Dr. Doom.

In the comics Harvey Elder becomes the villainous Mole Man, but that won’t happen in this movie. Instead the reboot will set up the transformation ready for planned sequels, where he will play a more prominent role. Elder starts out as an eccentric and socially awkward scientist who is later shunned by humanity and becomes the leader of a subterranean group of monsters known as Moloids.

Josh Trank is set to direct with filming due to kick off fairly soon, ready for a summer 2015 release.

LGBT Celeb Filled Documentary Do I Sound Gay? Seeks Completion Funding

April 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Does it matter if you ‘sound gay’? And what exactly does that mean anyway? These are questions the new documentary Do I Sound Gay? uses to explore issues such as internalised homophobia and whether we should embrace things such as the ‘gay voice’ in a world increasingly demands us to be straight-acting.

The film is now looking for $115,000 on Kickstarter to get the documentary completed and ready for distribution.

Director David Thorpe says, “In the tradition of funny-but-serious first-person movies like Supersize Me, Roger and Me and Good Hair, you’ll follow me as I encounter a colorful cast of linguists, historians, voice coaches, speech therapists, friends, family, and total strangers on the street, gay and non-gay, who share their wisdom and touching, funny stories about the “gay voice.” You’ll also hear intimate confessions and hilarious anecdotes from LGBT icons – Margaret Cho, Tim Gunn, Don Lemon, Dan Savage, David Sedaris and George Takei – as they open up about the “gay voice.” Thanks to all the incredible people I met, I was able to embrace my authentic voice.”

As the quotes below from the LGBT luminaries who feature in the documentary show, talking about the ‘gay voice’ certainly brings out a lot of prescient and interesting issues.

If you want to help out, head over the Kickstarter.

New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Trailer – Now with added Shredder and amphibian action

April 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The just was definitely out after the first trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It gained both a lot of fans and a lot of naysayers – many of whom thought the turtles themselves looked wrong.

Now we get another look, and while much of the footage in this one is the same as in the first trailer, we do get a slightly better look at Shredder and a few new shots of the Turtles in action.

There’s not been much info on the plot up to this point, but now we have a synopsis, which reads, ‘The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April (Megan Fox) and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.’

We’ve still got a while to ait for this one though, as the Jonathan Liebesman directed movie doesn’t hit US cinemas until August, while the UK currently has to wait until October (although if the buzz for this one grows, don’t be surprised if it moves up). [Read more…]

Hailee Steinfeld Joins Anna Kendrick & Rebel Wilson In Pitch Perfect 2

April 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hailee-steinfeld-pitch-perfect2A few days ago the ladies of Pitch Perfect 2 posed for a picture marking the first day of rehearsals. However at the time, casting-wise we’d only heard that nearly all the cast of the first film would be back for the follow-up.

However now Variety reports there’s a newbie, as Hailee Steinfeld (Rome & Juliet, True Grit) has signed up for the film. Universal confirmed that shortly afterwards with the picture featured to the right.

Plot details are still thin on the ground, but its believed the film will follow Rebel Wilson and Anna Kendrick’s Beca and Fat Amy through to their university graduation. If that’s true it would suggest they wouldn’t be around for a potential third movie, but Universal has reportedly brought in Steinfeld with an eye to her taking over the franchise if Pitch Perfect 2 does as well as the first film.

Filming kicks off soon with Elizabeth Banks directing. A May 2015 release date has already been set.

Great Gatsby’s Baz Luhrmann Eyes An Elvis Presley Biopic

April 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Baz-LuhrmannA couple of weeks ago it was revealed that Moulin Rouge and Great Gatsby’s Baz Luhrmann is in talks to helm a movie version of the 70s TV show Kung Fu. However that’s now the only film he’s considering, as TheWrap reports he’s circling a biopic of Elvis Presley.

Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks) is writing the script for the film, which currently doesn’t have a title.

It’s not known if this will just cover part of his life or be a birth to death biopic. The latter seems likely as Warner Bros. has apparently secured the rights to ‘all musical components in Presley’s catalog for this project.’

That certainly helps set it about from the numerous Elvis based projects that are in the works.

It’s certainly a project that could fit Luhrman’s visual style, from Presley’s birth in Depression-era Mississippi, through the sequin jumpsuits of his Vegas era. Baz hasn’t signed on quite yet, but if he does a deal is expected to be completed soon.

Colin Firth Looks To Drone Thriller An Eye In The Sky

April 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colin-firth-2There’s a lot of interest and controversy at the moment over the military’s use of drones (especially now that the machines are starting to sneak into civilian life). It’s not too surprising the film world is also interested in them, and that includes Ender’s Game director Gavin Hood.

He’s set to helm Eye In The Sky, which Deadline reports has Colin Firth attached to star.

The project has been around for a few year but got trapped in development hell. Now it’s found new life, with eOne coming onboard to back the film.

The film follow a London-based military intelligence officer called Colonel Michelle Madden who is tasked with overseeing a secret mission to capture a group of terrorists in Nairobi. However she realises the targets are about to embark on a suicide mission, which shifts the operation from trying to capture the bad guys to killing them.

American drone pilot Steve Watts is sent in to destroy the safe-house, but he realises that taking it out will also put the life of a nine-year-old-girl at risk. With the volatility of the situation and the possible fallout increasing, Madden passes the mission up the ‘kill chain’ to politicians and lawyers, including the British Foreign secretary. Guy Hibbert wrote the script.

Firth comments, “The use of unmanned aircraft in modern warfare and in the so-called ‘War on Terror’ poses critical questions for us all… I’m pleased to be a part of an exploration into such a crucial issue.”

Armie Hammer

Armie Hammer

Armie Hammer has been having difficulty capitalising on his breakout role in The Social Network, with the likes of J. Edgar, Mirror Mirror and The Lone Ranger have had mixed success. Now he’s switch tacks slightly as Variety reports that he’s signed up for a psychological thriller called Mine.

Hammer will be ‘a soldier who, after a failed assassination mission, finds himself stranded in the desert. Exposed to the elements, he must survive the dangers of the desert while also battling the psychological toll of the treacherous situation’

The Conjuring’s Peter Safran is producing, while Hammer will exec produce.

The movie is set to shoot this autumn, presumably wrapping before Hammer has to go off and promote his next movie, a film version of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., where he’s playing Russian agent Illya Kuryakin.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit Star Bob Hoskins Dies Aged 71

April 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bob-hoskins2Last year Bob Hoskins announced that he was retiring from acting due to the onset of Parkinson’s disease. Now it’s been revealed that he has died due to pneumonia and complications from his disease.

He is best known to many people for playing Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, however that was just a highlight in an illustrious career.

Born in Suffolk on October 26, 1942, Bob Hoskins started out as circus fire-eater (yes, really) and succeeded despite the fact that he never took an acting lesson in his life – something he prided himself on. He started acting on stage and in small television roles, before getting his breakthrough role with the classic 1980 gangster movie, The Long Good Friday.

He followed that with the likes of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Cotton Club and Mona Lisa. In Hollywood he also played Smee in Steven Spielberg’s Hook and Mario in Super Mario Bros. He also played an important role in the cult classic Terry Gilliam fantasy drama Brazil.

He always felt that his only real competition in Hollywood, in terms of physicality, was Danny DeVito. Indeed, DeVito was originally set to play Mario before Hoskins stepped in to assume the role.

He continued working through the 90s and 2000s in the likes of Son of the Mask,  Jet Li’s Unleashed, Mrs. Henderson Presents and Made In Dagenham. His final movie role was in 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman.

Bob Hoskins is survived by four children from his two marriages, including his most recent wife of 32 years, Linda Banwell.

Ellen Page Says Not Being Out Made Her Awkward Around Gay People

April 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

ellen-page-flare3In February Ellen Page made headlines with a speech where she publicly revealed she is a lesbian. Now she’s been talking to Flare Magazine about coming out, and alongside that is an incredible set of photos of the actress, some of which you can see above and below.

Page spoke of the difficulties she faced being in the closet, saying “You think you’re in a place where you’re all, ‘I’m thrilled to be gay, I have no issues about being gay anymore, I don’t feel shame about being gay,’ but you actually do.

“You’re just not fully aware of it. I think I still felt scared about people knowing. I felt awkward around gay people; I felt guilty for not being myself. The more time went by, the more something just happened, and, Oh my god — I want to love someone freely and walk down the street and hold my girlfriend’s hand.

“I felt happy and confident and the difference was huge. I feel more creatively inspired than I have in years. And I’m sure it has to do with a lot of bricks being taken out of the backpack.”

Ellen also talked about the arguments for and against coming out that she heard, saying, “You hear things like, ‘People shouldn’t know about your life because you’re creating an illusion on-screen’.

“But I don’t see other actresses going to great lengths to hide their heterosexuality. That’s an unfair double standard.”

And if you’re a lady hoping to one day have the Juno star on your arm, you don’t need to give up all hope just yet as Flare says that Page ‘would like her future girlfriend, if she’s reading, to know that she can’t wait to hang out with her.’ [Read more…]

Cameron Diaz Reveals She Has ‘Been With A Lady’

April 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cameron-diazThe Internet got a bit excited a few weeks ago with reports that Cameron Diaz had said she was “sexually attracted” to other women. While many were ready to slap a bisexual label on her, she soon after clarified her comments by adding, “that’s not what I was saying, what I’m saying is that I can appreciate the beauty of another woman.”

That wasn’t enough for Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen, who wanted details!

Cohen asked her, “Have you, yourself, ever swam in the lady pond?”

Diaz then replied, “Yes, I have been with a lady. You didn’t ask explicitly how I’ve been with a lady, but I have been with a lady.”

The actress has previously spoken of her dislike of labelling her sexuality, saying “Because we have to label it, because we make people choose who they want to be, people aren’t happy. They’re ruining relationships and friendships and marriages, and they’re feeling like they can’t have all sides of themselves. They feel like they have to choose. If we just allowed people to be themselves and to be open to it and not have to be absolute one way or another, life could be really full.”
