Win The Motorbiking Documentary Road Riders On DVD!

November 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

To celebrate the release of Road Riders – out on Digital and DVD 6th November – we are giving away a DVD courtesy of Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment.

A full throttle documentary series the likes of which you’ve never seen before, Road Riders shows the passion and perseverance of the bike riders who stare down danger every time they strap on a helmet and head on the twisty, treacherous, Northern Irish B-roads on their bikes.

Among those featured in the documentary are fearless country girl, Yvonne Montgomery, who got a motorbike license for ‘a bit of independence’, and a year later found herself competing in road races; young hotshot racer Gareth Keys, who says about road racing ‘nothing less will do’ and hasn’t let serious injuries sustained during a recent race put him off; and glamorous racing star Veronika Hankocyova, who says “you live more in five minutes on a bike like this going flat out, than some people live in a lifetime”. These are people for whom road racing is ‘a big family’ and isn’t just a pastime, but a way of life.

Out now on DVD and Digital 6th November.

For your chance to win Road Riders on DVD, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on November 19th, 2017, so get answering and good luck. [Read more…]

The Gay-Themed Comedy Web Series Stray Is Planning Season 2, But It Needs Your Help

November 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Earlier this year we posted episodes from the fun new web series Stray, which is about a straight guy and a gay guy, and their developing roommate bromance. Now the show is plotting its return for season 2, but in order to get it made, it’s hoping to raise $15,000 via Seed & Spark.

The first season concentrated almost exclusively on the straight Rich and the gay Jay, as they negotiated their fledgling friendship, from Rich getting a little too personal as he tries to find out about all things gay, to disussing the relative merits of Tinder and Grindr. We’re promised that ‘In Season 2, Rich and Jay’s world expands, introducing new friends and love interests, including “Brock,” Rich’s homophobic “friend”; “Marquis,” a holier-than-thou thespian; “Autumn,” a sadistic world-saver; and “Luna,” an unfiltered jocknerd.

‘Season 2 will contain 10 five-to-12-minute episodes, including a short-form adaptation of the 1980s comedy Clue, a Freaky Friday-esque episode in which Rich and Jay switch orientations; and an episode that deconstructs the ending of 500 Days of Summer which includes, if we hit our stretch goals, a protracted, Family Guy-style non-sequitur of a fight sequence.’

There are some fun added incentives for those who back the fundraising campaign, from personalised magic tricks to the chance to write your own Stray mini-episode.

Take a look at the crowdfunding video below, check out Season 1 here, and then if you like what you see, head over to Seed & Spark to help out. [Read more…]

Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Andrew Rannells & Zachary Quinto Teaming For Broadway Revival Of The Boys in the Band

November 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Earlier this year, a new stage production of Mat Crowley’s 1968 gay play The Boys In The Band got a limited run in the West End. It looks like that may have inspired a very starry 50th Anniversary Broadway revival which is being planned for 2018, starring an impressive selection of gay actors.

Matt Bomer (making his Broadway debut), Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Tuc Waitkins Robin de Jesus, Brian Hutchison and Michael Benjamin Washington have been cast in the production, with Joe Mantello directing. TV mega-producer Ryan Murphy is also involved behind-the-scenes.

Crowley’s play broke new ground when it debuted off-Broadway in 1968 for showing the lives of modern gay men in a unfliching way – something many audiences had never seen before. The 1970 film version, directed by William Friedkin, is often considered Hollywood’s first gay film.

The play is set in the New York apartment of Michael, who’s hosting a birthday party for his friend Harold. However, as the alcohol flows, the guests begin to tell a few too many home truths, revealing that underneath the jokes and cameraderie, many of the men are filled with anger and self-loathing.

Many now view it as problematic, due to the fact so many of the characters are seething, bitter, narcissistic, shallow and filled with internalised homophobia. However, Crowley has said that while it may be different now, in the era before Stonewall, that’s what him and his friends were like.

The revival is being lined up for a limited 15-week run at the Booth Theater, with the show starting previews on April 30th and running through to August 12th.

“In 1968, Mart Crowley made theatrical history by giving voice to gay men onstage, in this uncompromising, blisteringly honest, and wickedly funny play,” Ryan Murphy commented. “The play was groundbreaking in its exploration of how gay men treated each other and how they were made to feel about themselves. And while some attitudes have thankfully shifted, it’s important to be reminded of what we have overcome and how much further we still have to go.”

Love, Simon Teaser Trailer & Images – First look at Nick Robinson in the gay-themed coming-of-age tale

November 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although many will roll there eyes at the idea of another coming out movie, the truth is while they may seem old-hat to gay audiences, they’re still rare in mainstream cinema. Therefore Love, Simon is a movie to be welcomed, which has Greg Berlanti (Arrow, Riverdale, The Broken Hearts Club) directing, with Jurassic World’s Nick Robinson in the central role. He’s joined by Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Miles Heizer, Keiynan Lonsdale, Logan Miller, Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel and Tony Hale.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it’s a little more complicated: he’s yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Directed by Greg Berlanti (Dawson’s Creek, Brothers & Sisters), written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger (This is Us), and based on Becky Albertalli’s acclaimed novel, LOVE, SIMON is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love.’

The film is based on Becky Albertalli’s bestselling 2015 YA novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, and is due in cinemas March 2018. Take a look at the first pics, poster and promo below. [Read more…]

I, Tonya Trailer – Margot Robbie & Sebastian Stan get involved in violent sabotage

November 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

In the 1990s Tonya Harding was a top figure skater, but rather than her achievments on the ice, she’s now mainly remembered for being linked to an attack on her rival, Nancy Kerrigan, who was her main competition on the US team. Margot Robbie is now bringing the story to life with I, Tonya, which has released its first full trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on unbelievable but true events, I, TONYA is the darkly comedic tale of American figure skater Tonya Harding and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy has forever been defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived and worse-executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, a mustachioed Sebastian Stan as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, a tour-de-force performance from Allison Janney as her acid-tongued mother LaVona Golden, and an original screenplay by Steven Rogers, Craig Gillespie’s I, TONYA is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding’s life and career in all of its unchecked––and checkered––glory.’

I, Tonya is getting an Oscar-qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles from December 8th, 2017. It should arrive in the UK early next year. Take a look at the teaser trailer below. [Read more…]

Carlos Lechuga’s Santa & Andres won numerous awards at film festivals around the world, while managing to get banned in Cuba and causing a bit of a fuss when when the Havan Film Festival in New York removed it from their awards competition due to the fact it was ‘political’. Now that it’s preparing for its US cinema and DVD/VoD release, it’s a good excuse to take a look at the trailer for the gay-themed movie.

Monster Family Trailer – A normal family turns Munster-esque in the British animated comedy

October 31, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The problem with a lot of the CG animated movies that aren’t backed by big studios and enormous budgets is that the end result looks a little shoddy. It’s great to see then a British/German independent production that both looks polished and as if it might be quite fun.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘This truly global family adventure features an all-star voice cast, including Emily Watson (On Chesil Beach), Jason Isaacs (The Death of Stalin), Nick Frost (The Huntsman: Winter’s War), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), Celia Imrie (Bridget Jones’s Diary) and Catherine Tate (Doctor Who).

‘Based on David Safier’s best-selling novel, MONSTER FAMILY follows the very much unhappy Wishbone clan, Frank, Emma and their kids Max and Fay – under pressure and constantly at each other’s throats. When they are cursed by an evil witch and transformed into their own monstrous party costumes, they must pull together to battle real-life beasts; reverse the curse; and prove that even a vampire, a mummy, a werewolf, and Frankenstein’s monster can eventually form one big happy family. When the Wishbones snap, only love can stitch them back together…’

Monster Family will be released in cinemas across the UK & Ireland on 2nd March, 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Ghost Stories Trailers – Martin Freeman & Paul Whitehouse lead an anthology of horror

October 31, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Based on Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson’s original Olivier nominated stage production, the same team have co-written and directed this adaptation for the big screen.

Andy Nyman also leads the cast, reprising his role as Professor Goodman alongside Paul Whitehouse (Alice in Wonderland, ‘Harry & Paul’, ‘The Fast Show’), Alex Lawther (‘Black Mirror’, Old Boys, The Imitation Game) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit franchise, ‘Fargo’, ‘Sherlock’).

Phillip Goodman, professor of psychology, arch-skeptic, the one-man ‘belief buster’ – has his rationality tested to the hilt when he receives a letter apparently from beyond the grave. His mentor Charles Cameron, the ‘original’ TV parapsychologist went missing fifteen years before, presumed dead and yet now he writes to Goodman saying that the pair must meet. Cameron, it seems, is still very much alive. And he needs Goodman to find a rational explanation for three stories that have shaken Cameron to his core. As Goodman investigates, he meets three haunted people, each with a tale more frightening, uncanny and inexplicable than the last.

Ghost Stories hits UK cinemas on Friday 13th April, 2018. [Read more…]

Kevin Spacey Apologises & Comes Out After Anthony Rapp Alleges Inappropriate Conduct When He Was Underage

October 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Anthony Rapp in Rent (2005)

For decades rumours have swirled that Kevin Spacey was gay. Now that’s been confirmed, but in a way that has attracted fury from many. Spacey came out following allegations by actor Anthony Rapp that the double Oscar-winning actor made a sexual pass at him when Rapp was just 14-years-old.

Rapp says the event took place in 1986, when he was appearing on Broadway in Precious Sons, and Spacey had a supporting role in a revival of Long Day’s Journey Into Night. The young actor went to a party at Spacey’s house, where he soon discovered he didn’t know anyone else, and so ended up watching TV alone.

Talking to Buzzfeed, Rapp says it eventually got later than he’d realised, “My memory was that I thought, Oh, everybody’s gone. Well, yeah, I should probably go home.” Spacey, he recalled, “sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk… He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me. He was trying to seduce me. I don’t know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”

Eventually he managed to squirm away and get to the bathroom, “I was like, ‘What is happening?’ I saw on the counter next to the sink a picture of him having his arm around a man. So I think on some level I was like, Oh. He’s gay. I guess. Then I opened the door, and I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to go home now.’ He followed me to the front door of the apartment, and as I opened the door to leave, he was leaning on the front door[frame]. And he was like, ‘Are you sure you wanna go?’ I said, ‘Yes, good night,’ and then I did leave…

“My head was spinning. I have a memory of turning around and [thinking], What was that? What am I supposed to do with it? What does it mean?… The older I get, and the more I know, I feel very fortunate that something worse didn’t happen. And at the same time, the older I get, the more I can’t believe it. I could never imagine [that] anyone else I know would do something like that to a 14-year-old boy.”

After the Rent and Star Trek: Discovery actor stepped forward to talk about his experience and how it has affected him over the year, Spacey issued a response on Twitter: ‘I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor. I’m beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.’

‘This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact I have been so protective of my privacy. As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and for me that starts by examining my own behavior.’

Many however were furious not just about what Spacey is said to have done to an underage boy, but also at the way his statement appears to be attempting to deflect criticism by coming out as gay. He appears with his statement to have tried to take some measure of responsibility by not denying the claim, however many have seen the second paragraph as an attempt to move the focus away from Rapp’s allegations and onto Spacey revealing he’s gay.

There have also been many who have found it extremely troubling and problematic that by talking about allegations of inapporiate conduct with someone who was underage in the context of him coming out, Spacey has conflated homosexuality with pedophilia –  a stereotype the gay community has been fighting for decades. As a result, many celebrities and others have taken Spacey to task not just for what he’s said to have done, but also for the way he responded.

GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis took to Twitter to say, ‘Coming out stories should not be used to deflect from allegations of sexual assault… This isn’t a coming out story about Spacey, but a story of survivorship by Anthony Rapp & those who speak out about unwanted sexual advances. The media and public should not gloss over that.’

It has also been revealed that Spacey’s hit show, House Of Cards, will end after it’s upcoming sixth season. They also released a statement saying, “Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey. In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

Zachary Quinto, who appeared alongside Spacey in the film Margin Call,  perhaps summed things up in the statement he released: ‘It is deeply sad and troubling that this is how Kevin Spacey has chosen to come out. Not by standing up as a point of pride – in the light of all his many awards and accomplishments – thus inspiring tens of thousands of struggling LGBTQ kids around the world, but as a calculated manipulation to deflect attention from the very serious accusation that he attempted to molest one.

‘I am sorry to hear of Anthony Rapp’s experience and subsequent suffering. And I am sorry that Kevin only saw fit to acknowledge his truth when he thought it could serve him – just as his denial served him for so many years. May Anthony Rapp’s voice be the only one which is amplified here. Victim’s voices are the ones that deserve to be heard.”

Gay Short Film Showcase: Drowning – Watch the acclaimed short that inspired the movie Teenage Kicks

October 28, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The great, gay-themed movie Teenage Kicks was released on DVD/VoD in the UK on October 23rd. That film is based on the award-winning 2009 short, Drowning, which played at film festivals around the world and also became one of the centrepieces of the  Boys Of Film: Pacific Rim DVD.

To celebrate the Teenage Kicks UK release, writer/director Craig Boreham and producer Annmaree Bell have released Drowning online for us all to watch.

So what’s it all about? Well, here’s what we had to say when we reviewed it as part of the Pacific Rim release: ‘Mik and his friend Dan head over to visit Dan’s girlfriend. Mik seems less than impressed with this rich girl ‘princess’ and makes it clear he doesn’t think she’s right for Dan. However as the evening progresses and Mik’s anti-social behaviour gets more extreme and potentially dangerous, his family troubles are revealed as well as his feelings for Dan. It’s rare in gay films that the protagonist is presented as being a complete dick, but there’s no doubt that Mik is not exactly a nice guy. The short does a good job of drawing you in though and making Mik understandable. It’s a surprisingly complex little film and well worth watching.’

It’s also interesting for those who’ve seen Teenage Kicks to compare this Drowning with how it was expanded out into a feature-length movie. For example, while Miles Szanto plays Mik in both Drowning and Teenage Kicks, Dan in the short film is Xavier Samuel, who went on to appear in the Twilight movies, Fury and Adore.

Szanto recently won Best Actor at the prestigious Iris Prize in Wales for his performance in Teenage Kicks. The movie’s cast also includes Daniel Webber (11.22.63, The Punisher), Charlotte Best (Home and Away, Puberty Blues) and Shari Sebbens (The Sapphires). You can read our review of the film here.

Take a look at Drowning below. If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. And check out more gay short films and web series here. [Read more…]
