Colton Haynes Just Got Married To His Partner Jeff Leatham!

October 28, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Congratulations to Colton Haynes, who’s now a married man after tying the knot with his partner, Four Seasons artistic director Jeff Leatham. While many actors try to keep their nuptials a secret, an excited Jeff revealed it was going to happen on Thursday night, posting a pic on Instagram along with the message, ‘I have the honor and great pleasure of Marrying this Amazing Human Being tomorrow – I love him to the moon and back and I am Blessed to soon call him my #Husband – One more sleep baby’.

Now the wedding has happened, with People reporting that the evening ceremony took place in front of 120 guests at a Palm Springs hotel. Officiating the wedding was none other than Kris Jenner, a longtime friends of the couple. Everyone wore black and white.

The Arrow and Teen Wolf star comments, “It’s just amazing when you find someone who kind of teaches you to love yourself more. The really great thing about being with Jeff is that since we got together my relationships with my friends have gotten better, my family relationships have gotten better. When you learn to really love someone, it’s completely life-changing. Now we have this beautiful life together and this epic journey ahead.”

Guests at the wedding included Sofia Vergara, Joe Manganiello, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Justin Mikita, Melanie Griffith, Lisa Rinna, Chelsea Clinton, Dylan O’Brien, Emily Rickards, Billie Lourd, and Cheyenne Jackson. Everyone

Haynes came out publicly in early 2016, and had been engaged to Leatham since earlier this year. [Read more…]

Ryan Murphy’s Pose Breaks New Ground With Five Trans Actors Cast In Major Roles

October 28, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As if Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Feud, Scream Queens, American Crime Story) wasn’t busy enough already, he’s got big plans for 2018, which include the major series Pose. Much of the casting for the series has been announced in the past few days, and that includes the fact that there are a record five major trans roles in the show, and they have all been filled by trans actors.

It’s the most transgender series regulars ever for a scripted television show in the US.

Those roles will be taken on by MJ Rodriguez (Blanca); Indya Moore (Angel); Dominique Jackson (Elektra); Hailie Sahar (Lulu) and Angelica Ross (Candy). It’s not just in front of the camera that trans people are involved, as the likes of Our Lady J and Janet Mock have been working on the scripts.

Variety reports that the show is a ‘period piece set in the mid-’80s in New York City, examining the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in Manhattan: the emergence of the luxury Trump-era universe, the ball culture world, and downtown social and literary scene.’

The trans characters will joins a variety of other LGBT people of color in the part of the show that looks at ball culture – the LGBT subculture that emerged in the 1980s, and which sees different ‘houses’ and people competing against one another in balls.

Co-creator Steven Canals comments, “We are thrilled that POSE pushes the narrative forward by centering on the unique and under-told experiences of trans women and gay people of color. Ryan has assembled a strong team of storytellers and innovators to collaborate on telling this important narrative. As a Bronx-bred queer writer of color, I’m honored to aid in ushering this groundbreaking show into homes.”

The great cast will also include the likes of James Van Der Beek, Tatiana Maslany, Kate Mara, Evan Peters, Ryan Jamaal Swain, Billy Porter, and Dyllon Burnside.

At the moment, only a pilot episode of Pose had been commissioned, but given Murphy’s track record, there’s a strong chance a full season of the show will arrive sometime in 2018 on FX.

Disney Channel To Feature Gay Storyline For The First Time, In Top Show Andi Mack

October 28, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For its theme parks and as a company to work for, Disney often gets plaudits for its diversity and how its embraced LGBTQ inclusiveness. However, on screen it’s been rather different, with GLAAD consistently giving the company failing grades in its Studio Responsibility Report, and the likes of the Disney Channel including some very minor LGBT content in a couple of its animated shows, and nothing in its live action output.

However, that’s now changing with the announcement that Andi Mack, which has quickly become one of Disney Channels top-rated shows in both the UK and US, will include a gay storyline. Even better, it involves one of the major characters coming out, which should ensure it won’t just be a one-off that’s then forgotten in the series.

The show already raised a few eyebrows with conservatives when it debuted earlier this year, as it follows 13-year-old Andi (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), who’s coming to terms with the fact the person she thought was her her older sister is actually her biological mother. The series also charts he friendship with Cyrus Goodman (Joshua Rush) and Buffy Driscoll (Sofia Wylie), as well as Andi’s feeling for her crush, Jonah Beck (Asher Angel).

However, in Season 2, things get a tiny bit more complicated when Cyrus reveals to Buffy that he has feelings for Jonah too. He will then reportedly go on a journey of self-acceptance, which includes working out what to tell his girlfriend, Iris, about the fact he likes boys.

“Andi Mack is a story about ‘tweens’ figuring out who they are,” said Disney Channel in a statement. “[Creator] Terri Minsky, the cast and everyone involved in the show takes great care in ensuring that it’s appropriate for all audiences and sends a powerful message about inclusion and respect for humanity.”

Groups such as GLAAD and PFLAG have quickly stepped forward to support the storyline as the first example of what they hope will become increasing LGBT inclusiveness on the Disney Channel. However, it has also intevitably caused some controversy, with the likes of the anti-gay One Million Moms, calling for a boycott. However, as the show is already one of the highest rated on the Channel, it’s unlikely fringe anger will affect it that much.

New Justice League Trailer – Heroes unite and we finally get a look at the villain

October 28, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although there hasn’t been as much hype for Justice League as we might have expected, the movie is still tracking for a $100+ million opening weekend in the US, when it arrives in cinemas on November 17th. Much of the marketing so far has concentrated on bringing together the heroes – Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash – without giving us much info on why they felt the need to get together.

Now a new, fairly short trailer has arrived, which gives us a little more and a look at the main bad guy, Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds). He’s an integalactic bad guy who brings his parademons to search Earth for something he wants, and he doesn’t mind if the planet is destroyed in the process.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.’

Zachary Levi Cast As DC’s Shazam For Upcoming Comic Book Adaptation

October 28, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s almost three years ago that Dwayne Johnson signed on to play Black Adam in New Line/DC’s planned comic book adaptation of Shazam!. However it’s only now that the title character has been cast, with Chuck himself, Zachary Levi taking on the role.

It’s not certain now though whether Johnson will appear in the Shazam! film, as DC is planning a stand alone Black Adam movie.

Shazam (also known as Captain Marvel, although you can see why they’d avoid that name) is the superhero alter-ego of a boy called Billy Batson. The hero has the powers of Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. While not particularly well known today outside comic book circles, he was the biggest selling character of the 1940s.

The casting of Levi sees the actor jumping from Marvel to DC, as he played Fandral in the first two Thor movies. However, here he will get to take centre stage with a movie of his own. Shazam! is currently set for an April 2019 release.

Call Me By Your Name (Cinema Review) – Acclaimed first gay love for Timothee Chalamet & Armie Hammer

October 27, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Timothee Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar, Esther Garrel
Director: Luca Guadagnino
Running Time: 132 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 27th 2017 (UK)

After garnering huge amounts of praise on its Sundance debut in January, many suggested Call Me By Your Name had the potential to be a Brokeback style mainstream crossover success. Although it’s unlikely to become the sort of box office hit Ang Lee’s 2005 Oscar-winner was, it is likely to appeal to a wider audience than most gay-themed movies, partly just due to its reputation.

The film, based on Andre Aciman’s acclaimed novel, is set in northern Italy in 1983, at the 17th Century villa of an American professor (Michael Stuhlbarg) and his family. Each summer the professor brings one of his students over, which results in 24-year-old Oliver (Armie Hammer) arriving at the house. He immediately catches the attention of the professor’s 17-year-old son, Elio (Timothee Chalamet). [Read more…]

New Bright Trailer – Will Smith takes fantasy characters into a police procedural world

October 25, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bright is one of Netflix’s biggest gambits yet – a $90 million, fantasy thriller, with a major star (Will Smith) that they’ve bought the worldwide release rights. Unlike Amazon, which has given a full cinema release to some of the movies it has backed, Netflix is only planning a limited theatrical release for Bright and only once it’s already streaming via their service.

A new trailer for the film has been released, which suggest it’ll be a strange but potentially pretty good movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in an alternate present-day, this action-thriller directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) follows two cops from very different backgrounds. Ward, a human (Will Smith), and Jakoby, an orc (Joel Edgerton), embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a deadly, thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.

‘The Netflix original film stars Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, Edgar Ramirez, Ike Barinholtz, Enrique Murciano, Jay Hernandez, Andrea Navedo, Veronica Ngo, Alex Meraz, Margaret Cho, Brad William Henke, Dawn Olivieri, and Kenneth Choi. The film is directed by David Ayer and written by Max Landis. David Ayer, Eric Newman, and Bryan Unkeless serve as producers.’

Bright will be on Netflix from December 22nd. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: Pyotr495 – Homophobia in Russia gets the supernatural horror treatment

October 24, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pyotr465 was generating buzz even before it was finished, due to director Blake Mawson attempting to explore the increasingly dangeous homophobia in Russia while giving things a horror movie twist. Now the short film has been released online for us all to take a look.

When we saw the film at the Iris Prize Festival in 2016 we said, ‘Pyotr495 is set in modern-day Russia, where a young man heads out for a hook-up with a guy he’s met on a dating app. However, once there he discovers the guy and his friends actually intend to punish and torture him for being gay – which in their minds also makes him a paedophile. They may have bitten off more than they can chew though when something monstrous emerges.

‘It’s an interesting idea and deftly brings a touch of supernatural horror into a gay-themed short. The film also consciously engages with the situation in Russia, where the gay propaganda laws have allowed homophobes to feel they have impunity to kidnap and torture gay men (and in some cases worse). Horror fans will definitely appreciate where the short goes, which starts out feeling like a drama before taking a bloody, revenge fantasy turn.’

Tessa Thompson Confirms Her Thor: Ragnarok Character, Valkyrie, Is Bisexual

October 24, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Back in September there was a bit of excitement over whether Thor: Ragnarok would feature the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first gay character. This was based on the fact that the movie features Korg, who in the mid-2000s Planet Hulk series of comics (which Ragnarok is partially based on), Korg was in a same-sex relationship with a fellow male warrior called Hiroim.

Now, it turns out there may be another LGBT characters in the movie, as Tessa Thompson has announced on Twitter that her baddass character, Valkyrie, is ‘bi. And yes, she cares very little about what men think of her. What a joy to play!’

However, before we get over-exicted, it should be added that there’s nothing in the movie that would definitely says either Korg or Valkyrie is LGBT. While there’s also nothing to contradict it, whether Valkyrie likes boys, girls or all genders certainly doesn’t play into the storyline of the movie. One hope we can have though is that she appears to be a character Marvel is considering making more of in the post-Avengers: Infinity War universe, and if they do it will give them the chance to explore her sexuality in more depth.

Although it appears Thompson and/or the makers decided to take the character’s sexuality into account in the choices she made as an actor, after many years of criticism about the lack of queer representation in the Marvel universel, we’re still only talking about very tiny baby steps here.

She’s bi. And yes, she cares very little about what men think of her. What a joy to play! https://t.co/d0LZKTHCfL

Scream, Queen! My Nightmare On Elm Street Trailer – A look at the star of the gayest mainstream horror ever

October 24, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just over a year ago we reported on the Kickstarter for Scream, Queen! My Nightmare On Elm Street. Now the documentary is moving towards its release and has released a new trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In 1985, Mark Patton starred in what later generations would dub ‘The gayest horror movie ever made,’ A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge. The sequel made Freddy Krueger into a pop-culture icon, but Patton was never heard from again. After 30 years of living in near obscurity, Patton is back to talk about how his American dream became a nightmare during the homophobic AIDS crisis in Hollywood and why had to give it all up.’

No release date seems to be set yet for the documentary. However, if you’re interested in getting hold of the poster (which you can see below), a limited edition version with a layer of pink glitter and signed by artist Matt Ryan Tobin, will be are available here from October 25th. [Read more…]

Thor: Ragnarok (Cinema Review) – The God of Thunder is back & so is The Hulk

October 24, 2017 By George Elcombe Leave a Comment

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum
Director: Taika Waititi
Running Time: 130 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: October 24th 2017

I have absolutely no problem with Disney churning out Marvel (or Star Wars) films as long as the quality is up to scratch. Thankfully, they are indeed on point with this third and possibly final Thor movie.

Thor: Ragnarok is set two years after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) – although that film’s events seemed more like a week rather than an age – and our hero Thor, the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth), is forewarned about Ragnarok: a prophecy that spells the destruction of his homeland of Asgard. Phantom Thread Trailer – Paul Thomas Anderson directs Daniel Day-Lewis in his final film

October 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few months ago many were surprised by the news that triple Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis was retiring from acting. However, we haven’t quite seen the last of him yet, as he’s reteaming with his There Will Be Blood director, Paul Thomas Anderson, for Phantom Thread, which has just released its first trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in the glamour of 1950’s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love. With his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running. Phantom Thread is Paul Thomas Anderson’s eighth movie, and his second collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis.’

The film is due out in the UK on February 2nd 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]
