Better Midler To Play Mae West In A William Friedkin Directed Biopic

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bette-midlerGay icon Bette Midler doesn’t make too many movies these days, but she’s stepping up to play the legendary Mae West in an HBO biopic, with The Exorcist’s William Friedkin directing, according to Deadline.

The movie is based on West’s autobiography Goodness Had Nothing To Do With It, with another gay legend, Harvey Fierstein, providing the script. As Deadline notes, the book, ‘chronicles West’s rise fto stardom when she takes New York by storm after writing and starring in her scandalous Broadway show Sex and battles authorities over obscenity charges. Instead of taking the road of a wide-eyed Hollywood ingenue, West forged her own path, writing and starring in her own risqué plays, including her breakthrough Sex, which had her prosecuted and sentenced to 10 days in prison for “corrupting the morals of youth.”

‘The notoriety fueled her career and didn’t stop her from tackling taboo subjects in her next plays, including 1928 hit Diamond Lil, about a racy 1890s woman, which opened the doors to Hollywood for her. West was a late arrival, signing her first movie deal with Paramount at 39, but went on to make a string of hits, becoming one of the highest-grossing stars of the 1930s while still finding ways to push the envelope and keeping studio censors busy.’

She’s a fascinating figure, who championed female sexuality at a time when it was considered absolutely shocking.

However while West was 39 when she went to Hollywood, Midler is already 68, so it’ll be interesting to see if Bette will be Mae in her younger days, or if she’ll just play her in her later years. There’s no doubt though that she’s got Mae’s in your face style and way with words.

Godzilla Teaser Trailer – Plus a poster for the surprisingly awesome looking Aaron Johnson monster movie

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After Roland Emmerich’s incredibly underwhelming 1998 Godzilla movie, you could be forgiven for wondering whether new take on the classic Japanese monster would be another failure. However this trailer makes a great case for this being something far more intense and potentially awesome.

As an intro to the film it’s a great one!

Here’s the synopsis: An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

Gareth Edwards directs “Godzilla,” which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kick-Ass”), Oscar® nominee Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai,” “Inception”), Elizabeth Olsen (“Martha Marcy May Marlene”), Oscar® winner Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient,” “Cosmopolis”), and Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), with Oscar® nominee David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck.,” “The Bourne Legacy”) and Bryan Cranston (“Argo,” TV’s “Breaking Bad”).

Jupiter Ascending Trailer – The Wachowskis return to sci-fi and Channing Tatum gets Elfin

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Wachowskis are coming back with Jupiter Ascending, and if this trailer is anything to go by, it’s going to look as awesome as you’d hope from Lana and Andy. There’s certainly some unexpected imagery, including Channing Tatum channelling his inner elf.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in “Jupiter Ascending,” an original science fiction epic adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski.

‘Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

‘From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” is written and directed by the Wachowskis. Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom they have collaborated since “The Matrix” Trilogy, is producing, together with Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski. Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.’

It’s due out next July. [Read more…]

Official Synopsis For Johnny Depp Starrer Transcendence Revealed

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

transcendence-preview-pic1There’s been a lot of interest in Transcendence, the directorial debut of Christopher Nolan’s cinematographer Wally Pfister. However Pfister has learned a few things about secrecy from Nolan, so while there have been bits and pieces about what the movie is about, there’s not been much official.

However now an official synopsis has been released, giving us some more info on the movie, which stars Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Kate Mara and Paul Bettany.

Here is is: ‘Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.’

The film is due out next April.

Dexter Fletcher To Direct Freddie Mercury Biopic, With Ben Whishaw Confirmed To Star

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dexter-FletcherEver since Sacha Baron-Cohen dropped out of the planned Freddie Mercury a few years ago there’s been much speculation over who will replace him, however there’s been less talk about who will direct. Now Deadline reports that actor turned director Dexter Fletcher (Wild Bill, Sunshine on Leith), will helm.

It’s also been confirmed that as rumoured for the past couple of months, Ben Whishaw will play Mercury. He’s now officially made a deal to star.

Fletcher has apparently been meeting with the surviving members of Queen to get a better feel for the story. The movie will be a coming-of-age tale, leading up to Queen’s iconic Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium in 1985, which is considered one of the great rock performances of all time. Peter Morgan, Christopher Wilkinson and Stephen J. Rivele wrote the screenplay, with production slated to begin next year.

Mercury died of AIDS in 1991, although his last days will not be part of the film. There will be plenty of Queen music. It was reported that Baron-Cohen left as he wanted a gritty, warts-and-all tale, while Queen is hoping for a more family friendly film, and that is why he left. Because of this, the presumably won’t get into the wilder side of Freddie’s life and sexuality.

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bryan-singerLast week, director Bryan Singer revealed to a world via a Tweet that X-Men: Apocalypse is in the works and coming Summer 2016. However there wasn’t a huge amount more information, and we didn’t know if Singer was directing or just producing.

Now Vulture has apparently confirmed that Singer will indeed be at the helm of the upcoming mutant adventure. It’s also believed that the movie will focus primarily on the X-Men: First Class characters, led by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as Professor X and Magneto.

A separate report also suggests that while in the comics, Apocalypse is suggested to be connected to aliens (in some incarnations at least), in the movie he will be earthly. X-Men: Apocalypse comes to theaters May 27th, 2016. The film is directed by Bryan Singer.

Tom Cruise Up For Jack Reacher Sequel, Based On Never Look Back

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jack-Reacher-posterJack Reacher may not have been a massive blockbuster, but with a $220 million worldwide gross (on a $60 million budget), Paramount has decided it’s worth making a sequel. Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions are officially developing a follow-up based on Lee Child’s novel, Never Look Back. Tom Cruise is once more attached to star.

It’s not clear when it may shoo. Rumours had suggested they may try to slot it in before Tom shoots Mission: Impossible 5, which is set for release on December 25, 2015. Paramount are currently denying that claim, although they did confirm that this sequel is on the fast track.

Never Look Back is the latest of the Jack Reacher novels. It sees Jack return to his old military base in Virginia, where he is set to take the new female commanding officer out to dinner. However he discovers that she has been arrested, and Jack is also facing charges of assaulting a man and fathering a child. Reacher has no recollection of any of these things happening, which understandably starts him looking into what has happened.

Paramount is currently seeking writers for the project. Christopher McQuarrie wrote and directed Jack Reacher, but now that he’s signed up for Mission: Impossible 5, he doesn’t have time to write the Reacher sequel at the moment. However, if Never Look Back does shoot after M:I5, McQuarrie way direct.

Jason Momoa Eyed for Batman Vs. Superman

December 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jason-momoaJason Momoa, best known for Conan The Barbarian and Game Of Thrones, is now in negotiations for the highly anticipated Batman Vs. Superman, according to THR. However at this stage it isn’t known who he will play.

If a deal is made, he will join Henry Cavill (Superman/Clark Kent), Ben Affleck (Batman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White) and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman).

Inevitably there are already rumours about who Momoa might be playing, with most of the speculation suggesting that the muscle-bound actor may be the villainous Doomsday or Martin Manhunter. Warner Bros. is now focussing on the Lex Luthor role, with the studio seeking African-American actors to play the iconic villain. It’s not believed Momoa will take this role, although it hasn’t been denied by the studio.

2012’s The Falls (read our review here) gained a lot of fans with its story of young Mormon missionaries RJ (Nick Ferrucci) and Chris (Benjamin Farmer), who fall in love with each other despite the fact they know being actively gay is strictly prohibited by their religion.
