New Kill Your Darlings Clip Has Daniel Radcliffe Reading Alan Ginsberg’s Poetry

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While there been a lot of talk about the fact Daniel Radcliffe is playing gay in Kill Your Darlings, there’s been less interest in the fact he’s playing one of the most renowned poets of the 20th Century, Alan Gisberg. While Kill Your Darlings is set before Ginsberg wrote seminal works such as Howl, a new clip show Alan reading some of his youthful verse to Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan), with Radcliffe ensuring the whole thing is infused with a sense of young love.

Based on a true story, Kill Your Darlings charts how a murder helped shape the lives of a group of young men who went on to become the beat generation. Dane DeHaan plays Lucien Carr, the man who introduced Howl writer Allen Ginsberg (Radcliffe) to the likes of William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster) and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston).

During these early, hedonistic days, a man called David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall) fell for Carr, with his infatuation becoming increasingly obsessive and unhinged – the gay Ginsberg once discovered Kammerer trying to murder Jack Kerouac’s cat. It eventually resulted in Carr stabbing Kammerer to death him and going to prison for his murder. The violent event is said to have indelibly changed all the people involved and etched its way into the published works of the Beat writers. You can watch the trailer here.

The film’s out in the US on October 16th, with the UK release recently shifted to December 6th. [Read more…]

Reaching For The Moon Trailer – Miranda Otto falls in love with a woman in a 1950s true story

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: This sumptuous English-language ’50s period piece recounts the mid-life years of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Elizabeth Bishop (played by Miranda Otto, Lord of the Rings) when she left America to live and write in Rio de Janiero — where she would also fall in love with well-off architect Lota de Macedo Soares (butched up to the hilt by beautifully handsome Brazilian TV star Gloria Pires).

Initial hostilities between the pair make way for a complicated yet long-lasting love affair that dramatically alters Bishop’s relationship to the world around her. From renowned Brazilian director Bruno Barreto (Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands), Reaching for the Moon is an intimate snapshot of the search for inspiration, wherever and however you find it.

The film will be screening in major US cities from mid November – you can find exact details on www.reachingforthemoonmovie.com [Read more…]

Sean Paul Lockhart is making a successful transition from gay porn to gay films (with some dancing in his underwear for Andrew Christian thrown in), thanks to movies such as Judas Kissed and Triple Crossed. Now we’ve got the trailer for another new movie starring Lockhart, Truth, which also features Blanche Baker (Sixteen Candles, Raw Deal) and Rob Moretti (Crutch, An Affirmative Act, Snapshot), who also directs.

Sadly a few months ago Cheyenne Jackson announced that he and hubby Monte Lapka are getting discovered. However it appears that Jackson has found new love, posting a pic on Instagram of him kissing his new boyfriend, LA-based actor Jason Landau.

Landau has popped up in Jackson’s pics before, but this is the first time we’ve seen them together.

It all seems to be going well as the tagline was simply, “H A P P Y.”

They certainly make a cute couple, and we wish them the best of luck.

Win The Tobe Hooper Horror Lifeforce On Blu-ray!

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lifeforce-bd-coverArrow Video is pleased to announce the highly anticipated deluxe Blu-ray & SteelBook editions of Tobe Hooper’s cult sci-fi classic Lifeforce. The restored Blu-ray discs are available from October 24th, marking the first time that the movie will be available on this format in the UK. And we’ve teamed up with Arrow to give away three copies of the movie!

When a space shuttle crew finds a mysterious spacecraft containing three human-looking creatures in a state of suspended animation, they bring them back to Earth for further investigation.

It’s only then that scientists discover that they are in fact a race of space vampires that feed off people’s life-force rather than their blood. So when they escape and run amok in London, the consequences are apocalyptic – and the shuttle crew’s only survivor (Steve Railsback) seems to be the only man who can stop them.

Based on Colin Wilson’s novel ‘The Space Vampires’, co-written by Dan O’Bannon (Alien, Return of the Living Dead) and directed by Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Poltergeist), this lively sci-fi horror romp has a stellar cast including Peter Firth, Frank Finlay and Patrick Stewart – although it’s Mathilda May’s appearance as a naked female alien that attracts most attention to this day.

If you’d like to try and win one of the three copies of Lifeforce on Blu-ray that we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on October 27th 2013, so get answering and good luck! [Read more…]

Out In The Dark (DVD)

Starring: Nicholas Jacob, Michael Aloni, Jamil Khoury, Alon Pdut
Director: Michael Mayer
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 14th 2013

When I’m reviewing gay-themed films, I sometimes feel I’m using the word ‘forgive’ too much. With many of these films you can see there’s a lot that’s good about them, but you have to forgive the acting, the low-budget (and resulting picture or sound issues), the shaky direction or slightly unfinished script. It’s always great then when you find a gay-themed film that’s just a good movie, and Out In The Dark certainly fits in that category. [Read more…]

Chicago Fire – Season 1 (DVD)

October 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney, Monica Raymund, Lauren German, Charlie Bartlett
Director: Various
Running Time: 1080 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 14th 2013

I’m not sure why American TV thinks Chicago is mainly about the emergency services, but after the likes of ER, Chicago Hope and The Chicago Code comes Chicago Fire, following the theme that residents of the city need saving an awful lot. As you may have guessed, the series follows a group of firefighters, in this case the men and women of Firehouse 51.

The team includes Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), who leads the team but is dealing with relationship problems and a mother who’s locked up for killing his father. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) meanwhile has become addicted to painkillers and is trying to cover this up, partly because if he has the surgery that could sort out his pain problem, he could end up behind a desk. The Mummy (1959) (Blu-ray)

Starring: Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Yvonne Furneaux, Eddie Byrne
Director: Terence Fisher
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: October 14th 2013

Following the success of Dracula and Frankenstein, it was little surprise that Hammer decided to take on one of the other characters that Universal had success with in the 1930s – The Mummy. The British film company’s 1959 take on bandaged ancient Egyptians reunites Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and director Terence Fisher, and while the results aren’t as memorable as with the earlier movies, it is fun. In the 1980s, Cannon Films became a prolific producer of low-to-mid budget movies across a whole range of genres, who were best known for cheap and cheerful action-thrillers such as Missing In Action and American Ninja. However with Lifeforce they wanted to go big, hiring Tobe Hooper shortly after Poltergeist to make them a sci-fi epic. [Read more…]

Director: Tibor Takacs
Running Time: 89 mins

3D has largely been limited to the cinema. While 3D Blu-ray has attempted to bring it to the small screen, nearly all the releases have been for cinema movies when they come to the home. However Spiders comes direct to Blu-ray as a 3D release, which may mark a new horizon for straight-to-disc movies. However on DVD we only get it in two-dimensions, which robs the film of a lot of the fun it might have had – which would have been mild anyway. [Read more…]
