Simon Pegg Gets Apocalyptic In New The World’s End Posters

May 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

worlds-end-teaser-poster4
Two new posters for the Simon Pegg, Nick Frost & Edgar Wright reunion, The World’s End, have arrived – or rather they’re the same poster but in one-sheet and quad versions, which you can see above and below.

If you’re wondering what this apocalyptic looking movie is about, here’s the synopsis: ‘Director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite for a third film following the successes “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) and “Hot Fuzz” (2007). In “The World’s End,” 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub – The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realise the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.’

It reaches UK cinemas on July 19th.

Leonardo DiCaprio Reunites With Dennis Lehane For Travis McGhee

May 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dennis-lehaneDennis Lehane is best known for writing novels, but having starred in the adaptation of the author’s novel Shutter Island, Leonardo DiCaprio has hired him to come up with the script for the crime drama Travis McGee, according to Variety.

Lehane will write the adapted screenplay, based on the 1964 John D. MacDonald novel The Deep Blue Good-By, with Leonardo DiCaprio playing the title character.

The official description of the novel says, “Travis McGee – He’s a self-described beach bum who won his houseboat in a card game. He’s also a knight errant who’s wary of credit cards, retirement benefits, political parties, mortgages, and television. He only works when his cash runs out and his rule is simple: he’ll help you find whatever was taken from you, as long as he can keep half…”

This project will mark the first time that author/screenwriter Dennis Lehane has adapted another writer’s work, although he has written episodes of The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, and Castle. That said, the story of Travis McGhee is a good fit for the writer.

L’Inconnu du lac (Stranger by the Lake) Teaser – Take a look at the gay art-porn noir that’s shaking up Cannes

May 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

linconnu-du-lac-trailer-slide
One of the films that’s been stirring up a fair amount of interest at Cannes is L’Inconnu du lac (Stranger by the Lake). Screening in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ segment of the festival, Alain Guiraudie’s film is a mix of very explicit sex, nihilistic thriller and arthouse drama. Reports suggest it got an extremely positive reaction at screenings, even though many have admitted its hardcore scenes will make it difficult to distribute.

The short synopsis from the Cannes website simply says, ‘Summertime. A cruising spot for men, tucked away on the shores of a lake. Franck falls in love with Michel. An attractive, potent and lethally dangerous man. Franck knows this, but wants to live out his passion anyway.’ That hints at the plot, which involves Franck witnessing Michel killing someone but telling nobody. He continues to pursue Michel, who holds him at arms length.

Take a look at a teaser for the film above (which you won’t be surprised to hear doesn’t feature any hardcore sexy, although it is a bit sexy). Hopefully its Cannes success will ensure this ‘porn noir’ gets better distribution than it might otherwise have had. [Read more…]

Beloved – Gay short film explores not being able to admit who you love

May 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The sweet short film Beloved is well worth a look. It follows a theme many of us will be able to relate to – being in love with somebody but not feeling able to say it, especially if it’s with another man.

It also seems to take place in a world solely populated by ginger-haired people!

It does slightly spoil the movie that even the title on Youtube says it’s a gay short film (and we haven’t helped), but it’s still effective. It’s only five minutes long, so there’s no excuse not to watch. [Read more…]

Jonathan Groff & Denis O’Hare Starrer C.O.G. To Open Outfest

May 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cog-outfest
The opening night film of this year’s LA Outfest has been announced, with C.O.G. getting the honour when the world’s leading LGBT film festival kicks off on July 11.

The movie stars out actors Jonathan Groff and Denis O’Hare, alongside Corey Stoll, Dean Stockwell, Casey Wilson and Troian Bellisario. Directed by 29-year-old Kyle Patrick Alvarez and based on the writings of David Sedaris, C.O.G. (which stand for Children Of God) follows recent college graduate David (Groff), who decides to get close to nature, and the working class, by spending a summer picking apples in Oregon with his friend Jennifer.

Even after she blows him off, he charges ahead on a picaresque journey that takes him from orchard to processing plant to an arts and crafts workshop, guided along the way by an increasingly eccentric and motley bunch of mentors. Whether trying to interpret the possible flirtations of co-worker Curly (Stoll) or resisting the religious hard-sell from Bible-thumping Jon (O’Hare), David finds himself on the most complicated path of all — figuring out who he is and what he wants.

Outfest has also revealed it’s going to hand its 17th annual Achievement Award to writer/director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry, Stop-Loss, Carrie). The Achievement Award is Outfest’s highest honour and is presented in recognition of a body of work that has made a significant contribution to LGBT film and media.

It will be given to Pierce at the Outfest Opening Night Gala at The Orpheum, Los Angeles. The rest of the Outfest programme will be revealed in June.

Love Or Whatever Teaser Trailer – Getting over an ex isn’t easy whether you’re gay or straight

May 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Love Or Whatever is busy doing the film festival rounds at the moment, and will be released on DVD by TLA in the US later this year. But you can take a look at the teaser for the movie above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Corey is a good-hearted therapist who loves helping his sweet, eccentric clients find happiness. After two years in a relationship with carefree jock Jon, Corey decides it’s time to pop the question. Obsessed with planning the “perfect moment”, though, Corey lets chance after chance slip by, until his feisty sister Kelsey gives him an ultimatum: ask him tonight or I’ll do it for you! Corey agrees to take the leap. But when the proposal night arrives, Jon prematurely discovers the rings. Suddenly face-to-face with a big commitment, Jon is overwhelmed by fear and doubt, and rushes out to the bar to drown his worries with friends.

‘There he meets Melissa, an attractive, recently-divorced older woman looking to make a new start of her own. Drawn together by electric attraction and mutual need, they share a night of passion that leads to something more. When Jon confesses his infidelity to Corey, their split sends Corey into a tailspin. And Corey’s in for a bigger shock when he discovers that Jon’s new girlfriend Melissa is one of Corey’s biggest clients! Corey struggles to come to terms with the breakup and understand Jon’s actions, and though he knows better, Corey just can’t resist getting the dirt on his ex’s new relationship through his counseling sessions with Melissa.

‘Finally, guided (and gently pushed) by Kelsey, Corey puts himself back out there, navigating the wild world of web dating with hilariously disastrous results. But when Corey discovers the mobile social networking app Grindr, he finds the potential man of his dreams has been there all along—Pete, a poet, scholar, neighborhood pizza guy, and all around hunk. Corey had no idea Pete was gay, and better yet, single! Their friendship sparks a ‘bromance’ that soon blossoms into a romance. As their relationship grows, Corey struggles with his unresolved feelings for Jon—who, despite his relationship with Melissa, never seems too far from Corey’s door.

‘As Pete struggles with a family illness and Kelsey fights to save her beloved neighborhood coffee bar, Corey neglects them and starts to yearn for what he’s lost. Unexpectedly alone and vulnerable on the night of his 30th birthday, Corey finds bad-boy Jon at his doorstep looking for a second chance, and their unfinished business takes a passionate turn. But moments later, the different pieces of Corey’s life collide with explosive results, as Pete, Melissa and Kelsey discover the truth about Corey and Jon—and Corey must face the truth about himself. Alone for the first time in his life, with his boyfriend gone, his sister’s livelihood in peril and his career hanging by a thread, Corey has to make a choice: to rekindle the past with Jon or to start over and fight for Kelsey, his career, and a last chance at love with Pete. Can Corey face the fear, overcome his obsession with planning and perfection and embrace the crazy, scary, unpredictable, adventurous future as it comes? In Love Or Whatever, it all comes down to a wild finish—and a choice that will change Corey’s life forever.’ [Read more…]

Anthony Hopkins Joins John Travolta In Revived Gotti Biopic

May 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anthony-hopkinsIf all had gone to plan, we’d already have had Gotti in cinemas by now, but endless delays over script and casting caused the whole thing to crash, before it was picked up again a few weeks ago by director Joe Johnston. Now he’s driving is forward, with Variety reporting that he’s signed Anthony Hopkins for an unspecified role in the biopic.

John Travolta is still set to star as Gambino family crime boss John Gotti, with Kelly Preston portraying the teflon don’s wife, Victoria Gotti. The story follows Gotti and his son, who wants to leave the family business to start fresh on his own. Lindsay Lohan and Ben Foster were previously attached to star, but it doesn’t seem like they’re involved anymore.

Leo Rossi and Lem Dobbs wrote the screenplay, based on an original idea by John Gotti Jr.. Shooting is scheduled to begin in New York this September.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers Rumored For Star Wars: Episode VII

May 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jonathan-Rhys-MeyersPersonally I’d take this with a pinch of salt, but Latino Review is suggesting that The Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers is in talks for an major role in Star Wars: Episode VII. If a deal is made, the actor would reunite with his Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams.

No story details have been revealed yet, but Michael Arndt (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Toy Story 3) is currently working on the screenplay. We don’t know what role Meyers might play, but it’s possible he’d play the child of Han Solo and Princess Leia, or indeed Luke Skywalker’s son (they’re not sticking to the previously established post Return Of The Jedi mythology, so it’s impossible to narrow it down further).

Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher should all be back. Shooting will begin in early 2014 in the UK.

Kate Hudson Up For Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here

May 21, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

wish-i-was-here-kate-hudson-announcement
Writer-director-star Zach Braff may have had a bit of controversy for getting $2.6 million from Kickstarter and then scoring loads more cash from traditional sources, but he’s motoring forwards and putting the cast for Wish I Was Here Together.

He’s now announced that Kate Hudson will play the female lead in of the movie. He released the image above to accompany the announcement. He also revealed a bit about who she’ll play in a statement of Kickstarter:

‘The character of Sarah (my wife) needs to be pretty, funny, believable as a mother of two children ages 5 and 12 and an actress who’s skilled at both comedy and drama.

I fell in love with Kate Hudson when I first saw her in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous. (She was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Penny Lane.)

‘Years later, we have become good friends. There’s an added benefit in already being close with the actor playing opposite you; a familiarity that’s real and isn’t forced. As we shoot in August, I loved the idea of jumping into this movie-marriage with someone with whom I’ve already shared lots of laughs.

Backers, I am honored and excited to introduce our leading lady: Kate Hudson.

Allow me to introduce our starting lineup thus far:
Zach Braff (me)
Kate Hudson
Mandy Patinkin
Josh Gad
Anna Kendrick
Jim Parsons
Donald Faison

P.S. We are about to be 40,000 people strong. Can’t stop smiling. Love you all,

Zach’

The film is about Braff’s Aidan Bloom, a struggling actor who can’t quite provide for his family. When his father (Mandy Patinkin) becomes ill, he reluctantly agrees to home-school his father’s young children, which forces him to learn a lot about himself in the process.
