Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden & Ian McKellen In Talks For Cats

July 22, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For a very long time there’s been talk about turning Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats into a movie. For various reasons – not least that despite its massive stage success it’s a very odd show, with very little plot and a far greater reliance on dance than mainstream cinema is often comfortable with. However, now it’s moving forward thanks to Tom Hooper (Les Miserables, The King’s Speech) coming on board to direct.

Now it’s starting to fill out the cast, with Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, and Ian McKellen all set to star, according to THR. They will all be members of the ‘jellicles’ a group of cats preparing for a ball where they will decide which of them will be given a new life. Hudson will play Grizabella (singer of the show’s most famous song, Memory), McKellan will be Old Deuteronomy, while Swift is likely to play the flirtatious Bombalurina. It’s not clear who Corden will be.

The current plan is for Hooper to shoot the live-action movie (rather than an animated film that often seemed to be Hollywood’s preferred option for Cats) in the UK later this year, with a script by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot). It should be in cinemas next year.

July 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We reviewed Miles back when it screened at the Iris Prize Festival – you can read what we said here. Now it’s heading to DVD in the UK, arriving in stores (and online) on July 23rd. It’s a good time then to take a look at the trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Miles Walton (Tim Boardman), age 17, is biding his time until he can go away to college in Chicago and study filmmaking. His father passes away unexpectedly, revealing a secret affair with a local girl, which gutted their family savings. Miles can no longer afford to go to college. Desperate to get out of his small town, Miles finds the only remaining college scholarship in Chicago is to the Men’s Volleyball team at Loyola University. Because his high school doesn’t have a men’s team, Miles tries out for the girl’s team and head coach Leslie Wayne (Missi Pyle) accepts him on the team regardless of state regulations.

‘Meanwhile Miles’s soft-spoken mother Pam (Molly Shannon) joins a local widow support group where she meets Lloyd O’Brien (Paul Reiser), the new school district Superintendent who fiercely opposes a boy on the girls’ volleyball team. Mission: Impossible – Fallout (Cinema Review)

July 18, 2018 By George Elcombe Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Running Time: 147 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: July 25th 2018 (UK)

It really doesn’t seem that long since I saw the last Mission: Impossible film (Rogue Nation, 2015), and I praised it for its ability to utilise the tried and tested formula of its predecessors, whilst being a fresh and exhilarating entry to the franchise. That’s something this series continues to do effortlessly with Fallout, which is without doubt one of the best entries. You can’t say that for many other franchises six movies in.

Without going too much into the plot, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team have to retrieve three plutonium cores before they are turned into nuclear bombs, as well as foil the plot of a religious terrorist group called the Apostles, who want to reshape the world. On this mission Hunt is chaperoned by CIA agent Walker (Henry Cavill), and we have the welcome return of regulars Benji (Simon Pegg), Luther (Ving Rhames), Ilsa (Rebeccan Fergurson), alongside some new and memorable additions. New Welcome to Marwen Trailer – Steve Carell creates a miniature world for Robert Zemeckis

July 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Robert Zemeckis returns with Welcome To Marwen, which some think may be in the award season running next year (although it’s way too early to say). It’s certainly being lined up for an awards run with a late 2018 release planned. The new trailer shows it could be powerful if done right, showcasing Zemeckis’ love of bringing effects and technology to stories you might not initially think would need them.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Welcome to Marwen tells the miraculous true story of one broken man’s fight as he discovers how artistic imagination can restore the human spirit. When a devastating attack shatters Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carell) and wipes away all memories, no one expected recovery. Putting together pieces from his old and new life, Mark meticulously creates a wondrous town where he can heal and be heroic. As he builds an astonishing art installation—a testament to the most powerful women he knows—through his fantasy world, he draws strength to triumph in the real one.

‘In a bold, wondrous and timely film from this revolutionary pioneer of contemporary cinema, Welcome to Marwen shows that when your only weapon is your imagination…you’ll find courage in the most unexpected place.’

Welcome To Marwen also stars, Leslie Mann, Diane Kruger, Eiza González, Gwendoline Christie, and Janelle Monae. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Overlord Trailer – Soldiers take on Nazi-created zombies in the JJ Abrams produced movie

July 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

You just can’t trust them Nazis, they’re always doing naughty things. That’s certainly true in Overlord, where the Nazis have created a village full of zombies.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. But as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.’

It’s the first R-rated movie from Bad Robot, JJ Abrams’ production company, and it certainly looks like it might be an interesting one (although probably not another secret Cloverfield movie that some have assumed it would be). Take a look at the trailer below. It’ll be in cinemas in October. [Read more…]

Boy Erased Trailer – Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman & Russell Crowe star in the gay conversion drama

July 17, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week we had the trailer for the first of two major movies about so-called ‘gay conversion therapy’, the largely discredited idea that you can coerce people into changing their sexuality. The first movie was The Miseducation Of Cameron Poster, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, and now we get our first look at the second, Boy Erased.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Boy Erased” tells the story of Jared (Lucas Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who is outed to his parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe) at age 19. Jared is faced with an ultimatum: attend a conversion therapy program – or be permanently exiled and shunned by his family, friends, and faith. Boy Erased is the true story of one young man’s struggle to find himself while being forced to question every aspect of his identity.’

Joel Edgerton wrote and directs the film, as well as playing one of the leader to the ‘therapy’ programme. It’s based on Garrard Conley’s acclaimed memoit, Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith and Family. It also stars Cherry Jones, Michael “Flea” Balzary, Xavier Dolan, Troye Sivan, and Joe Alwyn.

The film arrives in US cinemas in November, with some already thinking it could be a major Oscar contender. No UK release date is already set. [Read more…]

Bohemian Rhapsody Trailer – Rami Malek takes on the legendary Freddie Mercury

July 17, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody was in the works for years, working its ways through numerous directors and potential stars before it finally settled on Bryan Singer behind the camera and Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury. However, drama hit when Singer was sensationally fired after problems on set and then taking an unscheduled break. He was replaced by Dexter Fletcher.

More controversy arose with when the first trailer completely ignored Freddie’s sexuality. It seems that’s something the marketing people have taken onboard, ensuring that in the new trailer we see talk of Mercury’s private life and even a joke about ‘hysterical Queens’ (plus a brief shot of him getting up close and personal with another guy).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury, who defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet.

‘The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound, their near-implosion as Mercury’s lifestyle spirals out of control, and their triumphant reunion on the eve of Live Aid, where Mercury, facing a life-threatening illness, leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. In the process, cementing the legacy of a band that were always more like family, and who continue to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.’

Alongside Rami Malek, the film stars Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, Joseph Mazzello, Aidan Gillen, Allen Leech, Tom Hollander and Mike Myers. Take a look at the trailer below. The film will be in cinemas on October 24th. [Read more…]
