Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck Will Direct Captain Marvel

April 19, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last June Brie Larson signed on to play the title role in the superhero flick, Captain Marvel. At the time the studio was supposedly narrowing in on their choice of director, but it’s only now that they’ve found the people they want, as Variety reports that Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind’s Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are set to helm.

While Marvel met with various female directors last summer, they eventually decided to wait until the script was in better shape before honing in on their final choice.

Different incarnations of Captain Marvel have been both male and female in the comics, but for the movies they are concentrating on Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the super powers of strength, energy projection and flight.

Danvers has been part of The Avengers in the comics, and so should be a good fit as Marvel prepares for a future when the likes of Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth may want to leave the cinematic universe. Inside Out‘s Meg LeFauve and Guardians of the Galaxy Nicole Perlman have come up with the script. The film is due out March 2019.

Will Black Panther Make The Marvel Universe A Bit More Gay?

April 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Florence Kasumba (far left) as Ayo in Captain America: Civil War

Florence Kasumba (far left) as Ayo in Captain America: Civil War

There’s been growing criticism of Marvel and DC’s superhero universes (as well as Fox’s X-Men), that despite a wealth of LGBT characters and stories in the comic books, the movies have stayed resolutely straight. However, now some footage has screened suggested that Marvel will be getting a little more gay with the upcoming Black Panther.

The film will feature Walking Dead star Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba (who also played the same role in Captain America: Civil War, and Lupita Nyong’o as the Dora Milaje, who in the comics serve as the ceremonial guard of Black Panther, and help protect the Wakandan royal family. The footage that’s screened suggests the movie will be taking some of the storyline of the 2016 comic World of Wakanda by Ta-Nehisi Coates, which focused on the relationship between Ayo and Aneka (played in the movie by Gurira and Kasumba).

Vanity Fair reports that in the footage, ‘We see Gurira’s Okoye and Kasumba’s Ayo swaying rhythmically back in formation with the rest of their team. Okoye eyes Ayo flirtatiously for a long time as the camera pans in on them. Eventually, she says, appreciatively and appraisingly, “You look good.” Ayo responds in kind. Okoye grins and replies, “I know.”’

The magazine suggests this will be a more prominent LGBT storyline than the ‘exclusively gay moment’ in Beauty & The Beast that left many feeling underwhelmed. However, it’s difficult to know whether they’re basing this solely on the scene shown in the preview footage, as if so, we may still be left with something that hints about the characters’ sexuality without actually saying it. We will just have to wait and see, although it is telling that Disney/Marvel chose to screen a scene with very obvious gay undertones as part of the few minutes of footage they showed. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out in the movie.

Black Panther is due in cinemas February 2018, with Chadwick Boseman reprising the title role which he first played in Captain America: Civil War.

Luke Evans Doesn’t Think His Sexuality Has Affected His Career

April 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Over the last few years, Luke Evans sexuality has been a bit confusing to some. He used to be openly gay, but when he started to become famous, he appeared to be going back into the closet. However, while at one stage it did appear the Hobbit and Beauty & The Beast actor (or his agent) was trying to have all mention that he was gay scrubbed from the internet, he’s since become a little more open about it, as shown in a new interview with Jackal, where he isn’t exactly wearing a Pride flag and screaming, ‘We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it’, but he engages with the issues and how his sexuality relates to his career.

When asked about why he doesn’t talk about his private life in the same way he was when he was a young, up and coming actor, he says, “I try to keep my personal life and my private life separate. Not for any reason other than there’s a clue in the title – it’s private. As an actor you have to keep some sort of enigma and mystery. There’s a dignity to keeping private. I’m trying to keep a bit of dignity to my private life and to protect the people in my life… It’s the choice I’ve made.”

Although that sounds like he’s trying to shut down any discussion of his sexuality, when asked about whether he thinks Hollywood is ready for a gay action hero, he says, “That question is difficult to answer. I don’t know how ‘Hollywood’ as you call it, thinks. I don’t think about it. I don’t feel they’re connected. Talent, success, what you do in your personal life – I don’t see how one should have an effect on the other. I don’t think I’d be in this business if I felt that I was not being employed because of who I am in my personal life.”

Although some still take issue with Evan’s half-in, half-out stance, it has allowed him to become one of the few actors who are known to be gay, who isn’t labelled as such and who gets major Hollywood action roles. However, what’s more difficult to answer, is whether his success in such roles is as a result of the semi-closet he’s been living in.

American Assassin Trailer – Dylan O’Brien turns CIA black ops in order to stop Taylor Kitsch

April 18, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a fair amount of interest in American Assassin, partly due to the popularity of Vince Flynn’s Mitch Rapp novels, which many have suggested are long overdue a trip to the big screen. Now the first trailer has arrived, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘AMERICAN ASSASSIN follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair are then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East.’

The movie will be in cinemas in September. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

First Look At Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper In A Star Is Born Remake

April 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With a quick glance at the pic above, you might be thinking the title of this post is a lie. But while she looks a little different to the often outlandish and poised pop star she normally is, that is indeed Lady Gaga with Bradley Cooper in the pic above. However, it looks like she’ll be going by her real name, Stefani Germanotta, for the movie.

Warner Brothers describes the movie as a reimagining of the classic A Star Is Born, which has come to the screen three times before, in 1937 with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, in 1950 with Judy Garland and James Mason and in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.

In this version Bradley Cooper will be country music star Jackson Maine, who’s career is on the skids. He discovers Ally (Germanotta) and helps her find huge success. While they begin to fall for one another, things become increasingly difficult as his career fails while hers goes through the roof.

As well as starring, the film will also mark Bradley Cooper’s feature directorial debut. Don’t expect to see the movie for a while though, as it’s not currently due out until September 2018. It’s likely the first pic was released due to the fact that Gaga has been onstage at Coachella filming the movie in the last few days.

Utopians Trailer – A young man falls for his professor in the gay-themed film

April 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

‘Scud’ is certainly one of the more interesting names for a director, but that’s the guy behind Utopians. A new trailer for the movie has now arrived, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘What would happen if Mishima Yukio meets Socrates? Hins, a dreamy boy who indulges in literature and thirsts for philosophy, is overwhelmed by a charismatic teacher, Antonio, who drags Hins and his religious girlfriend Joey into unchartered territories. The intriguing appearance of Swan, an elegant and intellectual lady, only adds to their entanglement of spirit and lust. What once seemed like a path toward a surreal poetic life in an unrestrained Utopia is now barred by a lifetime secret and a lie of the heart. Will Hins’s love for art and wisdom guide him through, or will he lose himself amid the chaos?’

The film will be out on DVD and VoD in the US on May 2nd. [Read more…]

I Love You Both Trailer – Gay & straight twins fall for the same guy

April 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s a point in everyone’s life when you’re supposed to properly grow up. For some it sneaks up on them slowly, and for other there’s a moment when the realise things can’t be like they have before. The latter is the case in Doug Archibald’s gay-themed I Love You Both.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Twins, Krystal and Donny, have been codependent their entire lives, still living together in their late twenties in a converted one bedroom house. When they both meet and start dating the same guy, they remain in denial about the fact that they’re both dating him until he picks only one of them, forcing them to confront that they can no longer live the same life. With nowhere to turn for advice except each other and their only two friends-Linda, a former middle-school Tae Bo teacher, and their mother-the twins are finally forced to look for answers from within.’

In the US, I Love You Both will be in cinemas, on iTunes, OnDemand and Amazon Video June 9th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

The Sequel To The Popular Gay-Film Free Fall Is In Development & Needs Your Help

April 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of years ago, the movie Free Fall made a few waves on the gay film circuit and gained quite a few fans in the process. Now there are plans afoot for a sequel, which has launched an Indiegogo campaign in the hope of raising 100,000 Euros.

It’s already well on its way, but could do with as much cash as possible. The total hope is to raise three million euros, with the initial cash being used to fund script development and anything else they can cover.

Free Fall followed two men training for an elite police squad, who start to fall for one another. However, with one ostensibly straight and the other facing homophobic abuse, things get increasingly difficult. There’s not too much info on the sequel, although the crowdfunder says the makers have been adding ‘more depth to a darker story, revealing whole new aspects of Marc and Kay and their relationship. We will see both of them struggling in a new environment and we will see if they can possibly be together in the end.’

Max Riemelt and Hanno Koffler have agreed to return to play the main duo, Mark and Kay, and Stephan Lacant will once more direct. Take a look at the pitch video below, and if you like what you see, head over to Indiegogo to help out. [Read more…]

Fast and Furious 8 (Cinema Review) – Vin Diesel & crew are back in action

April 14, 2017 By BigGayPictureShow Leave a Comment

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Vin Diesel
Director: F. Gary Gray
Running Time: 136 mins
Certificate: 12A
Release Date: April 12th 2017 (UK)

Franchises are funny things. The popular opinion is that the majority of films on at your local multiplexes are part of franchises, cinematic universes, sequels or reboots. Whereas the Bond series has evolved by having multiple actors playing the titular spy and a soft reboot, Fast & Fuiours franchise has evolved from its ‘cop on the street action/thriller’ origins, to being stupidly fun and very over the top entries which channel heist and spy capers. It’s safe to say this particular franchise has evolved while maintaining its aesthetics, and doesn’t look like it will run out of gas any time soon.

As such we have another entry titled Fast and Furious 8 / The Fate of the Furious / The Fateful 8 / Vin Diesel’s Driving Dchool Vol. 8. As you can tell I can’t take this review too seriously, and you shouldn’t take this film seriously either. I cannot stress how silly, cheesy and, as such, enjoyable this film is. [Read more…]

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer – Rey, Finn, Poe, Leia & Luke are striking back

April 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you were hoping for the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi to give you a full rundown of the plot, you’ll be disappointed. Instead – and as most expected – it’s more about teasing the movie and getting people excited. Plot-wise, all we learn is the Rey will be practicing her Jedi skills and that the bad guys think the Jedi should end.

Nothing too surprising there then!

It does all look pretty cool though, with the return of Finn, Poe and Rey, as well as a glimpse of Leia and the voice of Luke Skywalker. There’s also plenty of drama, Kylo Ren looking suitable evil, and som spaceship action.

Take a look at the first trailer and poster below. [Read more…]

First Look At Kingsman: The Golden Circle Adds Channing Tatum, Halle Berry & Jeff Bridges

April 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kingsman was a bigger success than most had expected. It was more than enough to get it a sequel, which will be released later this year. Along with the return of British agents Taron Egerton and Colin Firth (yes, he will return), we will be introduced to the ‘Golden Circle’, the US version of the Kingsmen.

That includes Channing Tatum, Halle Berry and Jeff Bridges joining the movie, to mix things up a little. We’ve now got our first look at them in the movie, with the release of some pics via EW. You can take a look at them below.

The film will see them teaming up to take on a new villain, played by Julianne Moore. Hopefully a trailer for the movie will arrive soon. [Read more…]

New Transformers: The Last Knight Trailer – Michael Bay is blowing up the bots again

April 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you were wondering whether, for his last Transformers movie, Michael Bay would make a small, arthouse-style drama, this trailer is here to says that no, you were a moron to think that. Instead – and despite Bay promising changes – it’s going to be as big, bombastic and literally explosive as previous instalments.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock).

There comes a moment in everyone’s life when we are called upon to make a difference. In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes. Heroes will become villains. Only one world will survive: theirs, or ours.’

The movie will be in cinemas in June. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]
