Imelda Staunton & Miranda Richardson Join Maleficent

May 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As seems to happen a lot of the time when Hollywood heads for fantasy territory, they’re busy filling out the cast of Disney’s fairytale film Maleficent with British talent. Angelina Jolie may be playing the title role, but now THR reports that Brits Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Kenneth Cranham, Sam Riley, and Lesley Manville have all signed up for the flick.

The film puts a new spin on the relationship between evil fairy Maleficent and Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning), aka Sleeping Beauty. Imelda Staunton and Lesley Manville are playing Knotgrass and Flittle, two of the pixies who care for Aurora. Miranda Richardson is portraying Queen Ulla, Maleficent’s aunt who doesn’t like her evil niece. Sam Riley will be Diaval, Maleficent’s trusted right hand, who can transform himself between a raven and a human. Kenneth Cranham is playing the human king, the father of Aurora who tries to conquer the fairy kingdom.

Robert Stromberg is directing from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton. Production is due to begin this summer, with a March 14, 2014 release date already set.

Catfish Helmers Go For Monkey Wrench Gang

May 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman first found success with their is-it-a-documentary-or-not Catfish, and followed that up with the mainstream success of Paranormal Activity 3. Now they’re going in a slightly different direction, as they have signed on to direct the comedy, The Monkey Wrench Gang.

The directors are adapting the 1975 satire by Edward Abbey, which centres on four men who battle against the industrial development of their beloved desert in the American Southwest. While they attempt to sabotage construction sites, they vow never to harm another human being, animal, plant or rock.

The directors commented, “We’re excited and honored to turn this book into a movie. People often ask us why we work together and as Edward Abbey used to say, ‘One man alone can be pretty dumb sometimes, but for real bona fide stupidity, there ain’t nothin’ can beat teamwork.'”

Catherine Hardwicke was once attached to direct, but she is no longer involved. It’ isn’t known when it might shoot. (Source: Deadline)

Arnold Schwarzenegger Joins Ten

May 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although it’s still not certain whether the world wants Arnold Schwarzenegger back in cinemas following his sejourn into politics, we’re getting him, as he’s currently filming The Tomb, will appear in The Expendables 2, being released in August, and stars in The Last Stand, which will be released in January 2013. Now he’s lined up another movie, Ten.

David Ayer (End Of Watch) will direct from an original screenplay by Skip Woods (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, A Good Day to Die Hard). In Ten, an elite DEA task force deals with the world’s deadliest drug cartels. Specialising in complex mobile operations, the team executes a tactical raid on a cartel safe house. What looks to be a typical raid turns out to be an elaborate theft operation, pre-planned by the DEA squad. After hiding millions in stolen cash, the team believes their secret is safe – until someone begins assassinating them one by one.

“I am really excited about this project and the team that’s come together,” said Schwarzenegger. “David Ayer is incredibly talented and exactly what I want for a story this compelling.” Shooting should start later this year.

The film is due to hit cinemas on August 31.

JJ Abrams Producing One Last Thing Before I Go

May 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

J.J. Abrams may be best known for action and sci-fi films, but he’s going for something a little different with One Last Thing Before I Go, which Deadline reports he’s set to produce for Paramount Pictures, based on the upcoming novel of the same name from author Jonathan Tropper.

Tropper will adapt the screenplay himself, which is about Silver, a man having a midlife crisis whose ex-wife is marrying someone too nice to hate, and whose daughter is pregnant and on her way to Princeton. Silver tries to pull his broken family together only to discover that he could die at any moment because of his refusal to have an operation that could save his life.

There is no production start date set for One Last Thing Before I Go, but the search for a director is underway.

Avengers Smashes US Opening Weekend Record

May 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This weekend exactly 10 years ago, an adaptation of a Marvel comic became the very first movie to make $100 million is a single weekend. That film was Spider-man and now, a decade on, another Marvel property has become the first movie to power past $200 million in only three days in the US, smashing numerous records in the process.

The film took $200.3 million on its US release, which is by far the biggest opening ever, ahead of last year’s Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2’s $169 million. It became the fastest film to $100 million, $150 million and $200 million, took the biggest Saturday ($69.7 million) and Sunday ($50.1 milion) gross ever and had the highest per-theatre average ever for a nationwide release of $46,057.

Perhaps just as impressively its already beaten the lifetime US take of Thor, Captain America and the Incredible Hulk, and will almost certainly pass both Iron Man films by next weekend. It’s a massive vindication of Marvel’s plan to make a series of interconnected movies and will ensure we see many more movies featuring the characters in the future.

The only bad news what that The Avengers dominance meant all the other movies in the top 10 took a big hit, but cinema owners are unlikely to be complaining, and will hope this is only the beginning of a huge summer. Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of May 4th-6th 2012.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Avengers $200.3 $200.3
2 Think Like A Man $8.0 $72.0
3 The Hunger Games $5.7 $380.7
4 The Lucky One $5.5 $47.9
5 The Pirates! Band Of Misfits $5.4 $18.5
6 The Five-Year Engagement $5.1 $19.2
7 The Raven $2.5 $12.0
8 Safe $2.4 $12.8
9 Chimpanzee $2.3 $23.0

Can Men In Black III recapture the magic of the first two movies? First Beautiful Creatures Pic Debuts

May 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With the success of Twilight and The Hunger Games, everyone in Hollywood is looking for the next young adult franchise that will break the bank. One that’s hoping to do just that is Beautiful Creatures, which started shooting recently. Now the first picture from the film has debuted, courtesy of EW (and fans of The Secret Circle might notice a similarity to one of the key moments in the opening episode of that series).

The image doesn’t really give much of a hint at the supernatural elements, but Beautiful Creatures is about two star-crossed teenage lovers, Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a local boy, and a mysterious new girl, Lena (Alice Englert), who uncover dark secrets about their families, their history and their town, involving a long-standing curse and supernatural powers Lena possesses. Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum and Thomas Mann will also star. The movie is based on the first of a hugely popular series written by authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.

The film is set for release February 2013.

The Raid’s Gareth Evans Directing Breaking the Bank

May 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gareth Evans may be from Wales, but he’s really shaken up Indonesian cinema by directing the acclaimed Merantau and The Raid. Now he’s heading back to Britian, as Deadline reports that he’s attached to direct Breaking the Bank for Universal Pictures.

Darren Aronofsky was once set to direct, but he is since left the project which is based on the true story of “Lightning” Lee Murray, a former UFC fighter who mastermind behind a 2006 robbery, which became the largest cash heist in British history.

Kerry Williamson (I, Alex Cross) wrote the screenplay, which is based on the Howard Sounes book Heist: The True Story Of The World’s Biggest Cash Robbery and the Sports Illustrated article Breaking the Bank by L. Jon Wertheim. It isn’t known when the film will shoot, but it’s a fascinating story so should make a good movie.

Tommy Lee Jones Takes On Passion Project The Homesman

May 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tommy Lee Jones has made a few movies as a director, including The Three Burials Of Melquiades and The Sunset Limited, and now he’s lining up his next directorial vehicle with The Homesman, which he will also star in, write, and produce.

This period drama, which is described as a bit of a passion project for Tommy, centres on a claim-jumper (Tommy Lee Jones) and a pioneer woman in the 19th Century, who both escort three insane women on a bizarre journey from Nebraska to Iowa, where they must brave the harsh elements along the way.

The producers are in talks with Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp to co-produce, finance, and distribute the drama. Tommy Lee Jones will next be seen in the long-awaited sequel Men in Black III. It isn’t known when shooting will start on The Homesman. (Source: Variety)
