Ex_Machina (Blu-ray Review)

June 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac
Director: Alex Garland
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 1st 2015 (UK)

Young programmer Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) wins a competition to meet the legendary but very reclusive Nathan (Oscar Isaac), the owner of the company Caleb works for, on his secluded, private estate. Once there Caleb discovers this isn’t just a holiday, but that he’s expected to take part in an experiment to see whether Nathan has broken through the barrier to create an artificial intelligence that can truly think for itself, and which is indistinguishable from human behaviour.

Caleb is introduced to Ava (Alicia Vikander), an AI housed in a very human looking body. Soon Caleb is thrown into a quandary. He is extremely taken by Ava, but knows there’s always the possibility that rather than truly thinking, Ava is simply using her programming to ‘fool’ him into thinking she’s more ‘real’ than she is. With Nathan possibly switching Ava off if she fails – something Ava seems to be afraid of – and Caleb increasingly wondering how he knows whether anything is real, the situation starts to grow dangerous. Domhnall Gleeson Signs Up To Star Alongside Tom Cruise In Doug Liman’s Mena

April 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dohmnall-gleesonTom Cruise and Doug Liman had a great time working together on Edge Of Tomorrow, so much so that in January they announced that they were reuniting for the crime thriller Mena.

Now Liman has started to flesh out the cast, as Variety reports that Domhnall Gleeson and Sarah Wright will star in the movie.

Universal bought Barry Spinelli’s script last year for over a million dollars, with is about Barry Seal, a fired TWA pilot who became a major drug smuggler for the Medellin Cartel. He was later recruited by the DEA and CIA to provide intelligence, with his work tying to the Iran Contra scandal. He was assassinated by Colombians in 1986.

It’s not clear who Gleeson or Wright will play, but it adds to a big year for Domhnall, who’s set to appear in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Revenant, both of which will be out at the end of the year.

New Unbroken Trailer – Fresh look at Jack O’Connell in Angelina Jolie’s movie

October 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

unbroken-slideThere’s a lot of interest in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, with many suggesting it could turn her into a major force behind the camera and could even snag her a Best Director Oscar nom. Now a new trailer has arrived, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Academy Award® winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces Unbroken, an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.

‘Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s (“Seabiscuit: An American Legend”) enormously popular book, Unbroken brings to the big screen Zamperini’s unbelievable and inspiring true story about the resilient power of the human spirit.

‘Starring alongside O’Connell are Domhnall Gleeson and Finn Wittrock as Phil and Mac—the airmen with whom Zamperini endured perilous weeks adrift in the open Pacific—Garrett Hedlund and John Magaro as fellow POWs who find an unexpected camaraderie during their internment, Alex Russell as Zamperini’s brother, Pete, and in his English-language feature debut, Japanese actor Miyavi as the brutal camp guard known only to the men as “The Bird.”’

It’s due in UK cinemas at Christmas. [Read more…]

Frank (DVD Review)

September 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Michael Fassbender, Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal
Director: Lenny Abrahamson
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 15th 2014 (UK)

Michael Fassbender is a top actor who can have his choice of roles, so it initially seemed bizarre that he wanted to make a movie where he spends the vast majority of the runtime with a giant papier-mâché head covering his face. However as I watched more of the movie, I began to realise what an interesting role it must have seemed from his perspective.

For a start it means he has to create a performance and a character with just his body and voice, something he does an extremely good job of. It’s also gives him a chance to play a surprisingly interesting person as it begins to reveal more and more about the man inside the head. [Read more…]

The Star Wars Episode VII Cast Is Announced, Including John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis & Domhnall Gleeson

April 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-episode-vii-script-readingJJ Abrams has been keeping very quiet about the cast for Star Wars Episode VII, but with the shoot starting to gear up and the likes of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill & Carrie Fisher seen in London, many presumed we’d find out who would be in the film on Star Wars Day, May 4th.

However it’s come sooner that that with Lucasfilm & Disney issuing the following release: ‘The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

‘Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker in the new film.

‘Director J.J. Abrams says, “We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

‘Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.’

There’s no news on who the new cast will play, although it’s believed Attack The Block’s Boyega will be a Jedi apprentice, while Girls’ Adam Driver is one of the main villains. It’s a fair bet that Andy Serkis will be playing a motion capture character, but it’s less clear what Inside Llewyn Davis’ Oscar Isaac, About Time’s Domhnall Gleeson or relative newcomer Daisy Ridley will be doing.

Along with the release came the pick above from a cast script reading.

eddie-redmayneNow that the main characters in the planner reboot of Fantastic have been cast, attention has turned to who will be the villain. New Pics Emerge From The Set Of Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken

October 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

unbroken-pic3
Angelina Jolie’s second outing as a director, Unbroken, is now shooting, and to prove it a trio of pic from the set have been released, showing Jolie helming some rather damp action from the part of the movie that takes place on the ocean.

The press release accompanying the pics says, ‘Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces Unbroken, an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp.

‘Director Jolie began shooting some of the most dramatic and challenging scenes on Wednesday, October 16, on location far out at sea in Moreton Bay, Australia, with Louis Zamperini (O’Connell) and his fellow airmen—Phil (Domhnall Gleeson) and Mac (Finn Wittrock)—having impossibly survived being adrift in the open Pacific for several weeks.

‘Working with cameras on a floating rig in choppy waters and braving the elements, with actors dieting for months to appear as depleted as their characters, Jolie completed a successful first day of a location shoot that promises to be rigorous and uniquely challenging…

‘Starring alongside O’Connell, Gleeson and Wittrock are Garrett Hedlund and John Magaro as fellow POWs who find an unexpected camaraderie during their internment, Alex Russell as Zamperini’s brother, Pete, and in his English-language feature debut, Japanese actor Miyavi as the brutal camp guard known only to the men as “The Bird.”’

The film will be out Christmas 2014 in the US and January 2015 in the UK.
