Haywire (DVD)

May 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 21st, 2012

With a cast including Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender and Michael Douglas, alongside newcomer and MMA fighter Gina Carano – not to mention that it’s directed by Steven Soderbergh – you’d expect something pretty special from Haywire. Sadly though the film doesn’t live up to expectations, beyond a few very good fight scenes.

Carano plays Mallory Kane, a covert operative for hire who does the jobs governments and companies don’t want to admit any part of. After a mission to Barcelona she heads to Dublin for another job and soon realises something is amiss and that she’s suddenly a target herself. Knowing she’s been double-crossed, Mallory must use all her skills to stay one step ahead of those who are out to get her and work out exactly what’s going on. [Read more…]

Director: Chris Miller
Running Time: 87 mins

Release Date: March 26th, 2012

You have to wonder whether the fact the Shrek franchise is Dreamworks Animation’s goose that laid the golden egg was going through the minds of the powers that be when they were coming up with the story for Puss In Boots. While we were promised Shrek Forever After would be the last movie about the green ogre, it’s little surprise the studio wanted to carry on with a spin-off, and Puss In Boots is certainly a good character to do it with, allowing for a film that feels familiar but is different enough not to seem as if it’s merely rehashing the Shrek movies.

Set before Puss met his ogrish pals, the film sees the well-shod feline as an outlaw who discovers the dastardly Jack & Jill have the magic beans he’s been looking for most of his life. When he tries to steal them, he’s interrupted by another cat who on the outside of the law, Kitty Softpaws, who turns out to be allied to Puss’ old pal Humpty Dumpty. However Puss and Humpty have long been estranged, as despite growing up together in an orphanage, Puss blames Humpty for making him an outlaw when he got him involved in a robbery he knew nothing about. Antonio Banderas To Play Picasso in 33 Dias

February 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last time Picasso was the main subject of a movie he was in the form of Anthony Hopkins in Surviving Picasso, but now he’s getting a younger and more handsome filmic outing with Antonio Banderas signing up to play the artist in 33 Dias, according to Variety.

The film will concentrate on the period around the Spanish Civil War, when Picasso found himself in a personal crisis during his relationship with the French artist Dora Maar. He then set out to create the epic painting Guernica, his defining anti-war statement that he hoped would bring attention to the bombing of the Basque town by Franco-supporting German forces. The painting is considered one of his greatest achievements and currently resides at the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.

Banderas says, “He’s a character that has pursued me for a long time. I am from Malaga, and he was born four blocks from where I was born.” Indeed if you look a pictures of the artist in the 1930s and 1940s, Banderas is a very good fit. Writer/director Carlos Saura will start shooting in the summer on an $8 million budget (which is considerably less that what the painting it’s about is worth).

Black Gold UK Trailer

To watch this video, you need the latest Flash-Player and active javascript in your browser.

Set in early 20th Century Arabia at the dawn of the oil boom, Black Gold centres on a young Arab prince torn between allegiance to his conservative father and modern, liberal father-in-law. He dreams of a realm of infinite possibility, a kingdom with roads, schools and hospitals all paid for by the black gold beneath the barren sand. There is only one problem. The precious oil is located in a no man’s land between two rival tribes, with the peace between the sides relying on this buffer zone, but with oil under the sand, it turns into a war over control of the future. The film stars Tahar Rahim, Mark Strong, Antonio Banderas and Freida Pinto and hits UK cinemas February 24th.

Puss In Boots (Cinema)

Director: Chris Miller
Running Time: 90 mins

Release Date: December 9th, 2011

Shrek spin-off Puss In Boots has already had quite a lot of good reviews in the US, but it’s just the latest attempt by the liberal left in Hollywood to indoctrinate kids. Everyone knows that the natural state of cats is not to be in boots, but Dreamworks Animation and its media colleagues keep presenting this perversion of nature to us as if it’s something we should treat as normal. Not content with using the Shrek movies to warp young minds into thinking that cats in footwear are the equal of regular unshod felines, now they’re giving Puss In Boots a whole movie to himself!

It’s just plain wrong. It’s bound to cause children to start asking awkward questions about why Puss is wearing boots. It should be a parent’s decision how and when to broach such thorny subjects, not forced upon them by the all-powerful pro-shoes-for-cats agenda. Indeed it’s gotten to the point where right thinking people are afraid to stand up for what’s right and openly say Puss shouldn’t wear boots! [Read more…]
