Arthur & Mike Trailer – Colin Firth and Emily Blunt have an unconventional romance

June 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

arthur-and-mikeEmily Blunt may be in cinemas at the moment kicking ass in Edge Of Tomorrow, but soon she’s getting into a quirky romance with Colin Firth in Arthur & Mike.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘One-time talented golfer, Wallace Avery (Colin Firth) is struggling with a life from which he longs to escape. Faking his own death, he acquires a forged passport and a new identity—that of a golfer named “Arthur Newman”. “Arthur” heads out for Indiana to start a new life and a promise of a new job as a resident golf-pro at a prestigious club. Along the way, he meets the beautiful but troubled Charlotte (Emily Blunt), who is also traveling under a false identity—that of her schizophrenic twin sister, Michaela or “Mike”—and has fled her own home in North Carolina.

Arthur and Mike’s relationship flourishes and they embark on an adventurous road-trip where they take a deviation, breaking into empty mansions and assuming other people’s identities until, eventually, the role-playing games begin to lose their lustre, revealing two hearts hurt by life’s challenges. Arthur & Mike are then forced to take another look at themselves and the real lives they’ve left behind.’

The film is in select cinemas across the UK on June 27th following the Irish theatrical release on June 20th. The film will be available on demand and digital to own and rent from August 4th and released on DVD on August 25th, 2014. [Read more…]

Kingsman: The Secret Service Trailer – Plus a poster for Matthew Vaughn’s Colin Firth spy adventure

May 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Matthew Vaughn left X-Men behind partly so he could finally make his long-gestating adaptation of The Secret Service, based on Mark Millar’s comic The Secret Service.

Now it has a new name – Kingsman: The Secret Service – suggesting they’re already viewing it as a potential franchise, along with a poster, pics and the first trailer.

It’s essentially a particularly posh James Bond (in the form of Colin Firth) teaming up with someone much younger (newcomer Taron Egerton) and on a very different part of the social ladder, to take on an evil threat. And they’ve invited the likes of Michael Caine and Samuel L. Jackson along for the ride.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (“Kick-Ass,” “X-Men: First Class”), “Kingsman: The Secret Service” tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.’

The film’s due out this autumn.

Hugh Dancy Up For Rupert Everett’s Oscar Wilde Biopic The Happy Prince

May 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hugh-dancyHugh Dancy may spend part of the year being a bit nuts in Hannibal, but now he’s got a plan for the autumn, as ScreenDaily reports that he’s signed on for Rupert Everett’s long-gestating Oscar Wilde biopic, The Happy Prince.

Everett has been planning the movie, which will also serve as his feature directorial debut, since 2012, but now he’s finally pulling it together and hopes to shoot this October.

The film is said to focus on Oscar’s final days. It will see Wilde considering his own failure through his trademark wit and irony. After his imprisonment for homosexuality, Wilde spent his days in self-imposed exile in France. He briefly reunited with his love, Lord Alfred Douglas, but was kept away from his children. Although he published The Ballad Of Reading Gaol, he did very little writing and his health began to fail (partly due to poverty). He died of cerebral meningitis at the age of 46.

ScreenDaily doesn’t say who Dancy will play, but Lord Alfred Douglas would be a smart bet.

Colin Firth, Edward Fox, Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson are also onboard the movie, which plan a very multi-national shoot taking in Italy, Belgium, France and the UK.

Helen Mirren & Aaron Paul Join Colin Firth In Drone Thriller Eye in the Sky

May 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Aaron Paul

Aaron Paul

A few weeks ago it was announced that Colin Firth had signed on to star in and produce a drone thriller called Eye In The Sky. Now he has some company as it’s been revealed that Helen Mirren and Aaron Paul have signed on too.

The movie is described as a ‘contemporary international thriller set in the shadowy world of remotely piloted “drone” warfare, Mirren will star as Colonel Michelle Madden, a military intelligence officer in command of a top secret drone operation. Paul takes the focal role of American drone pilot Steve Watts.’

Watts is sent in to destroy the safe-house in Nairobi, but he realises that taking it out will also put the life of a nine-year-old-girl at risk. With the volatility of the situation and the possible fallout increasing, Madden passes the mission up the ‘kill chain’ to politicians and lawyers, including the British Foreign secretary (the role it’s believed Firth will take).

Guy Hibbert wrote the script with Ender’s Game’s Gavin Hood set to direct. Production is expected to begin in South Africa on 12th September 2014.

Starring: Colin Firth, Jeremy Irvine, Nicole Kidman, Hiroyuki Sanada, Stellan Skarsgard
Director: Jonathan Teplitzky
Running Time: 116 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 5th 2014 (UK)

There is undoubtedly an incredible true story behind The Railway Man, but while this movie certainly lets you know that, as a film in its own right it’s rather spotty.

The movie follows two periods in the life of Eric Lomax. As a middle-aged man (Colin Firth) he meets and falls in love with Patti (Nicole Kidman), however their marital bliss is severely hampered by the fact he suffers severely from what would now be called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Colin Firth Looks To Drone Thriller An Eye In The Sky

April 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colin-firth-2There’s a lot of interest and controversy at the moment over the military’s use of drones (especially now that the machines are starting to sneak into civilian life). It’s not too surprising the film world is also interested in them, and that includes Ender’s Game director Gavin Hood.

He’s set to helm Eye In The Sky, which Deadline reports has Colin Firth attached to star.

The project has been around for a few year but got trapped in development hell. Now it’s found new life, with eOne coming onboard to back the film.

The film follow a London-based military intelligence officer called Colonel Michelle Madden who is tasked with overseeing a secret mission to capture a group of terrorists in Nairobi. However she realises the targets are about to embark on a suicide mission, which shifts the operation from trying to capture the bad guys to killing them.

American drone pilot Steve Watts is sent in to destroy the safe-house, but he realises that taking it out will also put the life of a nine-year-old-girl at risk. With the volatility of the situation and the possible fallout increasing, Madden passes the mission up the ‘kill chain’ to politicians and lawyers, including the British Foreign secretary. Guy Hibbert wrote the script.

Firth comments, “The use of unmanned aircraft in modern warfare and in the so-called ‘War on Terror’ poses critical questions for us all… I’m pleased to be a part of an exploration into such a crucial issue.”

New Devil’s Knot Trailer – Fresh look at Colin Firth & Reese Witherspoon in the West Memphis 3 film

March 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Many expected The Devil’s Knot to be going for an Oscar run at the end of 2013, but it doesn’t arrive in US cinemas until May (no UK release date is currently set). The film is about the West Memphis 3, who were convicted of the murder of three young boys in Arkansas in the mid 90s. Even before they were convicted there were accusations of the investigation being bungled and the men being railroaded.

The youths were accused of murdering the boys in a Satanic ritual, with many suspecting they had just been caught up in a panic over Satanism that was sweeping the US (and other parts of the world) at the time, with the evidence made to fit what the prosecutors wanted it to, rather than what it did.
After years of campaigning, high-profile documentaries (particularly Paradise Lost and its sequel, which had a huge impact on the case), the three men were finally released – although it should be noted that it was part of a plea deal and they weren’t exonerated.

Colin Firth stars alongside the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Stephen Moyer, Dane DeHaan, Elia Koteas, Amy Ryan and Mireille Enos also star. Take a look at the new trailer. [Read more…]

Paddington Teaser Trailer – Plus a poster for the Peruvian bear movie

March 4, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Harry Potter producer has just come off a seven-Oscar win for his film, Gravity. I’m not sure his next movie will be able to beat that, but it’s certainly going to be cute. Now the first teaser trailer for Paddington, the live action-CG mix based around the famed children’s character from Deepest Darkest Peru.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From the producer of Harry Potter and Gravity, Paddington comes to the big screen for the first time in an epic new adventure. Starring Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Peter Capaldi, Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth as the voice of Paddington.

‘Adapted from Michael Bond’s beloved books, Paddington follows the comic misadventures of a polite young bear with an endearing talent for comic chaos.

‘Paddington has grown up deep in the Peruvian jungle with his Aunt Lucy who, inspired by a chance encounter with an English explorer, has raised her nephew to dream of an exciting life in London. When an earthquake destroys their home, Aunt Lucy decides to smuggle her young nephew on board a boat bound for England, in search of a better life. Arriving alone at Paddington Station, Paddington soon finds that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family, who find him with a label tied around his neck which reads ‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’ They offer him a temporary home whilst he searches for the explorer who impressed Aunt Lucy all those years before.

‘But when Paddington catches the eye of a sinister, seductive taxidermist, it isn’t long before his home – and very existence – is under threat…’

Paddington is due out in UK cinemas on November 28th. [Read more…]

Colin Firth Up For Three to Kill With Christopher McQuarrie Directing

November 22, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colin-firth-2Christopher McQuarrie is a busy man, as he’s set to shoot Mission: Impossible 5 early next year, and now he’s got another movie in the works, as he’s set to direct Colin Firth in the adaptation Three to Kill, according to Deadline.

The movie is based on Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel, which follows a businessman who is hunted down by a pair of sociopaths after witnessing a murder on the coast of France. The book was previously adapted into a graphic novel by Jacques Tardi, which was nominated for two Eisner Awards.

Howard A. Rodman (Savage Grace, August) is on board to write the screenplay adaptation. Another Jean-Patrick Manchette adaptation, The Gunman, is set for release next year, starring Sean Penn, Idris Elba and Javier Bardem.
