Devil’s Knot Trailer & Poster – Reese Witherspoon & Colin Firth star in the true-life tale

November 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Many expected Devil’s Knot to be going for an Oscar run at the end of 2013, but as yet no release date has been set. The film is about the West Memphis 3, who were convicted of the murder of three young boys in Arkansas in the mid 90s. Even before they were convicted there were accusations of the investigation being bungled and the men being railroaded.

The youths were accused of murdering the boys in a Satanic ritual, with many suspecting they had just been caught up in a panic over Satanism that was sweeping the US (and other parts of the world) at the time, with the evidence made to fit what the prosecutors wanted it to, rather than what it did.

After years of campaigning, high-profile documentaries (particularly Paradise Lost and its sequel, which had a huge impact on the case), the three men were finally released – although it should be noted that it was part of a plea deal and they weren’t exonerated.

Colin Firth stars alongside the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Stephen Moyer, Dane DeHaan, Elia Kotease, Amy Ryan and Mireille Enos also star. Take a look at the trailer above and the new poster below. [Read more…]

New Trailer & Character Posters Of Colin Firth, Jeremy Irvine & Nicole Kidman In The Railway Man Debut

November 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Railway-Man-character-poster2
The Railway Man is hoping to put in a strong awards run this winter. We’ve already seen it and we reckon it has a great shot at bagging a few awards. Now the movie has debuted a quintet of character posters, showing off Colin Firth, Jeremy Irvine, Nicole Kidman, Stellan Skarsgard and Hiroyuki Sanada in the movie.

It’s certainly a different look for Jeremy Irvine, who looks very different in glasses.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on his best-selling memoir, The Railway Man tells the extraordinary and epic true story of Eric Lomax, a British Army officer who is tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labour camp during World War II.  Decades later, Lomax discovers that the Japanese interpreter he holds responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him, and his haunting past. A powerful tale of survival, love and redemption, THE RAILWAY MAN stars Academy Award-winners Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman, with Jeremy Irvine and Stellan Skarsgård.’

It reaches UK cinemas on January 1st 2014.

Colin Firth & Nicole Kidman Lead Live-Action Paddington Bear Cast

September 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colin-firth-2It’s been announced that principal photography has begun for family adventure Paddington, based on the beloved fictional character bear, created by Michael Bond in 1958.

It’s also the first info we’ve had about the cast, which it has to be said is perhaps surprisingly good for the CG-live action mix. Colin Firth gets the lead role as the voice of Paddington Bear, with Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) as Mr. Brown, who take in the bear from Deepest Darkest Peru when he arrives in London, and Nicole Kidman (The Hours, Rabbit Hole, Moulin Rouge) as an evil taxidermist determined to wreak her revenge. They are joined by Sally Hawkins as Mrs. Brown, Julie Walters as Mrs. Bird, the housekeeper, and Jim Broadbent as Mr. Gruber, the owner of the antiques shop.

The movie will follow the comic misadventures of a young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British who travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family who read the label around his neck (‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’) and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist…

The film is produced by Harry Potter’s David Heyman, with Paul King (Come Fly with Me, The Mighty Boosh) directing. It’s due open in the UK November 28, 2014, with The Weinstein Company recently picking up the North American rights, with plans to release it there in the first quarter of 2015.

The Railway Man Trailer – Colin Firth, Jeremy Irvine & Nicole Kidman take on an epic true story

September 10, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Railway Man is making its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, ahead of a hoped for awards run this winter. Now we can get our first look at the movie, as the trailer has arrived, and it certainly looks good.

The film is ‘Based on his best-selling memoir, The Railway Man tells the extraordinary and epic true story of Eric Lomax, a British Army officer who is tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labour camp during World War II.  Decades later, Lomax discovers that the Japanese interpreter he holds responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him, and his haunting past.  Directed by Jonathan Teplitzky, and starring Academy Award-winner Colin Firth, Jeremy Irvine, and Academy Award-winner Nicole Kidman, the film is a powerful tale of survival, love and redemption.’

It’ll be out in the UK in January, with an Academy Award qualifying expected to start in the US at the end of 2013. [Read more…]

Sophie Cookson Up For Matthew Vaughn’s The Secret Service

September 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sophie-CooksonMatthew Vaughn is planning to shoot his latest graphic novel adaptation, The Secret Service, soon. Now he’s got a female lead, as relative newcomer Sophie Cookson has signed up, according to Variety. Vaughn apparently considered the likes  Emma Watson and Bella Heathcote for the role, but he wanted a fresh face.

Indeed that seems to be his strategy for most of the younger faces in the movie, as Taron Egerton landed the young male lead last month, despite not having a huge amount of professional acting experience.

Colin Firth is set to play a veteran MI6 spy who takes his nephew Gary (Taron Egerton) under his wing. He hopes that mentoring the young man in the ways of covert affairs will put him on the straight and narrow. Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Caine also star.

Matthew Vaughn is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jane Goldman, which is adapted from the comic book series created by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. Production is slated to begin sometime this autumn.

First Pics Of Colin Firth In Atom Egoyan’s Devil’s Knot

September 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

devils-knot-pic2
The Devil’s Knot is due to premier soon at TIFF, and ahead of that EW has debuted the first images from the movie, featuring Colin Firth looking very lawyerly in Atom Egoyan’s film.

Along with Firth, the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Stephen Moyer, Dane DeHaan, Elia Kotease, Amy Ryan and Mireille Enos also star.

Matthew Vaughn Casts Newcomer Taron Egerton In Secret Service

July 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matthew-vaughn4Matthew Vaughn has been working on an adaptation of Mark Millar’s Secret Service for years. When he stepped away from helming X-Men: Days Of Future Past earlier this year, he said it was partly so he could concentrate on the movie. He’s already cast Colin Firth in one of the lead roles, and now he’s added newcomer Taron Egerton, according to Variety.

Firth is set to play Uncle Jack, an MI6 spy, with Egerton as his nephew, Gary. Jack takes the youngster under his wing to teach him the ropes, in hopes the dodgy youngster will change his ways and become an MI6 agent.

No deal has been done yet, but negotiations are expected to start shortly. Others considered for the role include Vaughn’s Kick-Ass star, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, although the director eventually decided to go with something less well known. He also met the likes of Jack O’Connell and Attack the Block star John Boyega.

Interestingly Egerton is so new to the business he doesn’t have an agent (hence why we don’t have a pic of him), so Vaughn really is plucking him from obscurity. He did appear in an episode of Lewis though.

Vaughn is now looking to cast the female lead and the villain. Emma Watson and Dark Shadows’ Bella Heathcote are apparently high on the list for the former, with Vaughn hoping to cast a high-profile star like Tom Cruise or Leonardo DiCaprio for the latter (although both those actors have already turned down the part).

The hope is to shoot later this year for release next year.

Woody Allen Adds Eileen Atkins & Marcia Gay Harden To New Movie

July 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

eileen-atkins1Woody Allen is just finishing off Blue Jasmine, but he’s already busy putting together his next movie, which, as is Woody’s way, hasn’t had a title released yet. Colin Firth and Emma Stone are set to star, and now they’ve been joined by some great talents, as TheWrap reports that Eileen Atkins, Marcia Gay Harden, Jacki Weaver, Hamish Linklater and Simon McBurney will appear.

Erica Leerhsen and Jeremy Shamos are also set to star in the film, although as always, Allen is keeping the plot details to himself. The plan though is to start shooting fairly soon for release next year.

Blue Jasmine meanwhile, which stars Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, Louis C.K., Michael Stuhlbarg, Peter Sarsgaard, Bobby Cannavale, Alden Ehrenreich, and Sally Hawkins, is set for release in the US on July 26th, with a September 20th UK date planned.

Colin Firth Joins Matthew Vaughn’s The Secret Service

April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colin-firthWhen Matthew Vaughn stepped away from X-Men: Days Of Future Past, he said he would concentrate on the Mark Millar comic book adaptation The Secret Service, instead. He’s been working on it for several years, but now he’s ready to movie forward, with Latino Review reporting that Colin Firth is now in talks to star.

The actor will play Uncle Jack, an MI6 spy who takes his nephew Gary under his wing to teach him the ropes, in hopes the dodgy youngster will change his ways and become an MI6 agent. The role of Gary has yet to be cast.

Mark Millar described the story as a cross between James Bond and My Fair Lady.

Matthew Vaughn is directing from a screenplay he wrote with Jane Goldman, based on the Mark Millar comic book series. Fox signed up to distribute in February, at which point an August production start date was tentatively scheduled.
