Dwayne Johnson Takes On Graphic Novel Adaptation Lore

April 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It always help to get studio interest (and a bigger paycheck) if a film project comes with a movie star attached, and it appears that having Dwayne Johnson onboard Lore has aided that movie getting snapped up by Warner Bros.

An adaptation of Ashley Wood and T.P. Louise’s graphic novel has been in the works for a couple of years, but it only got a studio deal once Johnson came on board, with Warner beating out interest from three other parties. Lore is described as being similar to Men In Black, but about mythological creatures rather than aliens. In it, a man reluctantly become a member of an elite secret order, whose job is to protect humanity from the beast of folklore that threaten to invade our world.

Priest writers Cory Goodman and Jeremy Lott have been hard at work on the adaptation, which should go into production later this summer. There’s no director attached as yet, but Variety reports that several are circling.

Ken Jeong Joins Pain and Gain

April 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Bay must have enjoyed working with ken Jeong on Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, as he’s now cast The Hangover actor in his dark comedy, Pain and Gain, which recently started shooting.

The comedy is based on a true story about a pair of bodybuilders in Florida who get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping that goes terribly wrong. The actor will play the Johnny Wu, although THR has no character details. Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson are playing the body builders.

Ed Harris, Tony Shalhoub, Rebel Wilson, Rob Corddry and Anthony Mackie also star in what will be a very different film for Michael Bay. The director has finally started shooting after years of putting Pain & Gain back so he could make giant robot movies.

Scream 4 actress, Emma Roberts, has signed up for Dito Montiel’s drama, Empire State, says Variety, joining Dwayne Johnson and Liam Hemsworth who’ve been attached to the project for a while.

Liam Hemsworth is set to play one of the friends, with Dwayne Johnson as the NYPD detective out to bust the duo. Roberts will be a waitress who is Hemsworth’s romantic interest.

Dwayne Johnson In Talks For Journey 3

March 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While he’s done it fairly quietly, Dwayne Johnson has become one fo the few actors around consistently churning out hit movies. Many have suggested it was his presence that ensured the recent Journey 2 turned into a far bigger box office draw than anyone had expected.

Warner/New Line is already at work on a third Journey movie, and now TheWrap suggests Johnson is in talks to return as Hank in Journey 3. A couple of days ago, director Brad Peyton and screenwriters Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn signed on for the third movie. No details on the story have been revealed yet, but Peyton has suggested it will be based on another of Jules Verne’s classic tales.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was a follow-up to 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, although Josh Hutcherson was the only actor to return for the second installment, portraying Sean. Dwayne Johnson played Sean’s stepfather Hank in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, and it seems Hank will be imparting more wisdom (and pec-pops) to Sean in Journey 3, even though Josh Hutcherson hasn’t officially signed on yet.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island has grossed over $280 million worldwide since opening in early February. No production schedule was given for Journey 3, although Warner Bros. is eyeing a 2014 release.

Dwayne Johnson Lines Up Ciudad And Gets Confirmed For Hercules

March 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Remember when Dwayne Johnson was just a wrestler known as The Rock? Well, that was a long time ago, as he’s now one of the most ridiculously busy actors around, and just to prove that, he’s added another couple of roles to his line-up.

Deadline reports that Johnson has joined the cast of Ciudad, the long-gestating graphic novel adaptation, which is finally moving forward at Emmett/Furla Films. Directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo have been working on the movie since September 2008, based on the graphic novel they wrote with Ande Parks. It centres on a mercenary (Johnson) who is hired to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a Brazilian drug lord.

A couple of weeks ago, there were also reports Johnson was in talks to join Brett Ratner’s greek mythology epic, Hercules: The Thracian War, and Variety confirms he’s signed a deal to make the movie.

Hercules: The Thracian Wars is also based on a graphic novel of the same name, this one written by Steve Moore. It follows Hercules (Dwayne Johnson), who trains the Thracian army to be ruthless killers. Filming is scheduled to begin in New Zealand this October.

Anthony Mackie In Talks For Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain

February 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s almost like a support group for people coming off movies about large fighting robots, as Real Steel star Anthony Mackie is now in talks to join Transformers director Michael Bay’s new movie, Pain & Gain, which Bay plans to shoot fairly soon, before going back to the world of bots for Transformers 4.

Pain and Gain is based on a series of articles from the Miami New Times, and sees Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg as two Sun Gym employees who kidnap a business man, torture him, and leave him for dead, only to fail and have the man come back seeking revenge. According to Variety, Mackie is in talks to play Adrian Doorbal, a big-hearted bodybuilder who trains with Daniel Lugo (Wahlberg). However, he gets frustrated by the lack of results from his hard work and soon gets caught up in Lugo’s plot.

Described as a mix of Pulp Fiction and Fargo it’s something very different for Michael Bay, and indeed he may eve be making to try and prove his naysayers wrong. It’ll begin shooting early this spring.

Dwayne Johnson In Talks For Brett Ratner’s Hercules

February 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If there’s one man in Hollywood who looks like he could take on some literally herculean tasks it’s Dwayne Johnson, and director Brett Ratner obviously thinks the same, as Johnson is now in talks for Ratner’s planned take on the legend of Hercules for MGM, accoridng to Variety.

The film will be based on Steve Moore graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian War, with Ryan Condol set to adapt the screenplay. The action finds Hercules roaming the earth, amassing a small group of mercenaries to fight other people’s wars for pay. He eventually finds himself defending Olympus from an army of the damned.

There is no shooting date for Hercules, and with Johnson already having a lot on his plate, it may not be able to go for a while yet.

New G.I. Joe: Retaliation Trailer

February 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Video: G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation – Trailer 2
Although I think the first G.I. Joe movie was unjustly maligned as it’s not a bad movie at all, Paramount knows that it’s got to make the follow-up look like something really special. They’re not doing a bad job so far, and now they’ve unleashed a new trailer which makes G.I. Joe: Retaliation look pretty cool. This trailer actually briefly acknowledges Channing Tatum’s in the film (he was absent from the first promo), as well as giving us a little more of the plot and suggesting that while there’d been talk of this film completely ignoring the first, it will follow-on from at least some of the plotline of that movie. G.I. Joe: Retaliation hits cinemas June 22nd.

G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation Super Bowl Ad

February 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With this Sunday’s Super Bowl likely to see a slew of cool ads for the summer’s big movies, G.I. Joe 2 has decided to try and steal a march on the rest by release their Super Bowl spot a few days early. It’s action-packed, but what’s most noticeable is that despite the fact Channing Tatum is supposedly returning as the main character, he doesn’t feature in the trailer at all, with the focus being more on new players Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis. The film hits cinemas this June.

Liam Hemsworth & Dwayne Johnson Circling Empire State

January 6, 2012 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Who’s gonna end up the biggest of the Hemsworth brothers? Chris overtook Liam’s early lead thanks to Thor, but the younger brother is hitting back this year with the likes of the Hunger Games and The Expendables 2 (while Chris will be saving the world in The Avengers). Now Liam’s got another project he’s hoping will push him up the fame ladder – Empire State.

Deadline reports that Liam Hemsworth is finalising a deal to star in the movie for director Dito Montiel, with Dwayne Johnson in talks for another role as well. Adam Mazer (Breach) wrote the screenplay, based on the true story of a 1982 armored car company robbery in New York City. At the time the heist was believed to be the largest in US history.

Liam Hemsworth will play Chris, and Dwayne Johnson is portraying Ransone, although no further details have been given about their characters. Production is scheduled to begin in April.
