Magic Mike 2 Gets Its Director & Title, With An Autumn Shoot Planned

March 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

magic-mike-heat-slideShortly after Magic Mike became a surprise hit, Channing Tatum started talking about making a sequel, and at one point it was even suggested it could have been his directorial debut. However its only now that the movie is ready to move forward, and Tatum won’t be at the helm.

A couple of days ago Joe Manganiello said they we planning to shoot the follow-up this autumn and that more info would be announced very soon. Well now it has, as ThePlaylist reports that Steven Soderbergh’s longtime assistant director, Gregory Jacobs, will direct the movie, and it’ll be getting the slightly risqué title Magic Mike XXL.

Channing Tatum is co-writing the movie alongside Reid Carolin, and will return to play the title character. Soderbergh, who directed the first film, will executive produce.

While it’s almost certain Joe Manganiello will once again co-star, it’s not known who amongst Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer and Olivia Munn might also be back, although it’s believed all are interested in returning.

Gregory Jacobs previously helmed 2004’s Criminal and 2007’s Wind Chill in 2007.

Joe Manganiello Premieres His Male Stripper Documentary Directorial Debut At Slamdance

January 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems that making Magic Mike had an oddly profound affect on many of the actors involved, making them fascinated by the world of male strippers. That certainly seems true of Joe Manganiello, who’s now turned director for the first time, making a documentary called La Bare, about a well known male strip club in Dallas, Texas.

Manganiello has been in Utah to premiere the movie at Slamdance, which is the more edgy little unofficial little brother of Sundance. While there he told EW, “I had zero interest in male stripping prior to Magic Mike. As a straight male, I had a lot of misperceptions about the industry. People would walk out of Magic Mike saying  ’I loved it but I wish there was more of the guys. I wish I knew more about them, where they live, who they go out with, what their lives are like.’ So I knew there was a lot left on the table.”

As a result he started putting together La Bare alongside his brother Nick. Using his own money, Joe was initially thinking of it being a reality series, but with Steven Soderbergh’s encouragement it’s become a feature-length documentary – and Manganiello’s directorial debut – which US audiences will get to see this summer.

You can take a look at a chat with Manganiello above about the movie above, while the trailer is available over at EW. [Read more…]

Magic Mike (Cinema)

June 30, 2012 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, Olivia Munn, Channing Tatum
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: July 11th, 2012

When I first saw the advert I thought, ‘Oh no, it’s Showgirls meets The Full Monty’, however I was perplexed somewhat that Oscar winning director Stephen Soderbegh was at the helm. He’s delivered some brilliant films over the years, including Traffic, Erin Brockovich and Solaris, although his work of recent has not been as impressive, namely Haywire and Contagion.

However, with Magic Mike, he has given us is a crowd pleasing, energetic, realistic behind-the-scenes look at the glamorous but shady lives of the stripping community, in a tight, well scripted gem of a movie. [Read more…]

New Magic Mike UK Trailer – Fresh look at the star-filled male stripper flick

May 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ll be the first to admit we’ve become a bit obsessed with Magic Mike here at BGPS, but there’s been a lot of interest in Magic Mike, and not just for the prurient voyeurism of seeing the likes of Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello and Alex Pettyfer playing stripper. it’s also because it’s a rare case of Hollywood looking at men as sexual objects in a way that’s normally reserved for women. But let’s not get too sociological, as the intrigue is mainly about seeing actors gets their stripper on.

Magic Mike Actors Strip For EW Cover – And Matthew McConaughey is down with the gays

May 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Magic Mike hitting the US on June 29th and the UK on July 13th, many a gay man and straight woman is already in paroxysms of excitement over the likes of Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Matthew McConaughey and Joe Manganiello getting their stripper on!

The boys have stripped down for the latest cover of EW, which you can see above. Hopefully it’ll satiate your desire for male celebrity flesh until the movie hits cinemas (or you can watch the Magic Mike trailer here)!

Matthew McConaughey has also been chatting to The Advocate, and telling them he’s more than happy with the attentions of gay men. When asked when he first realised he had a gay audience, he says “I know exactly when. It was about 1995, I go into a coffee shop on Santa Monica Boulevard, and the guy behind the counter has a picture of me from Boys on the Side (pictured) taped to the tip jar. Is that not classic? I gave that guy a big tip.”

As for his first exposure to gay people, he comments, “In high school I was a jock, popular, good-looking, in student council, had a girlfriend — I was that guy. But I also had a friend who was a gay gothic chick, so she was outcast because she was gay and because she was goth with the tattoos and the piercings. But she was also really fuckin’ cool and smart. I would always invite her out with my group, but it was hard for her to come on her own, so mostly we would hang out separately. So I crossed the tracks back and forth with her.”

He adds, “I’ve had some great conversations with a lot of gay people about being gay, when they knew, how they came out, and how they live. I’ve also talked to some gay people who aren’t yet comfortable coming out, and boy, that’s got to be more than a daily fuckin’ headache. What a weight to carry on your shoulders. It’s all very interesting to me on a human level, because we’re all in this together.”

But of course the important important question, just how sexy is his Magic Mike strip? “It wasn’t in the script,” he says, “But Soderbergh said in the beginning that if it felt right, I could strip at the end of the movie. I said, ‘I gotta dance, man.’ I would regret it for the rest of my life if I was in a male stripper movie and didn’t get up there and strip myself.”

You can read the full and frank interview over at The Advocate.
