The Naked Civil Servant (Blu-ray Review) – John Hurt’s classic take on ‘stately homo’ Quentin Crisp returns

June 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: John Hurt, Liz Gebhardt, Patricia Hodge, John Rhys-Davies, Colin Higgins
Director: Jack Gold
Running Time: 77 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: June 5th 2017 (UK)

It’s difficult to imagine nowadays what audiences would have made of The Naked Civil Servant in 1975. Gay sex had only been (partially) decriminalised in England and Wales eight years before, and homosexuality certainly wasn’t seen on screen much. Then suddenly there was a primetime TV movie in the UK, about someone who didn’t even have the common decency to hide in the shadows and pretend being gay was the most shameful thing in the universe!

The film charts the life of Quentin Crisp (John Hurt) from his youth through to his 60s. As a young man, his parents don’t know quite what to make of their fey son, who doesn’t seem to like girls or be able to fit himself into ‘normal’ society. After meeting a bunch of ‘effeminate homosexuals’ in London, Quentin starts wearing makeup and becoming increasingly ‘noticeably gay’ at a time when homosexuality was one of society’s most detested things. The Legend of Tarzan IMAX Trailer – Take a fresh look at (shirtless) Alexander Skarsgard in the jungle

June 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tarzan-main-poster-slideAfter quite a few sequels have bombed this summer, Warner will be hoping the big bet they’ve taken on people being interested in a new Tarzan movie will be lining up next month for The Legend Of Tarzan. They’ll also be hoping it wasn’t a mistake to have director David Yates doing post-production on both this film and Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them at the same time, with the movies hitting cinemas only fourth months apart.

To give us a fresh taste of the film, a three-minute IMAX trailer has arrived, which you can take a look at below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures comes the action adventure “The Legend of Tarzan,” starring Alexander Skarsgård (HBO’s “True Blood”) as the legendary character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

‘The film also stars Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson (“Pulp Fiction,” the “Captain America” films), Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot”), Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou (“Blood Diamond,” “Gladiator”), with Oscar winner Jim Broadbent (“Iris”), and two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz (“Inglourious Basterds,” “Django Unchained”).

‘It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.’

The Legend Of Tarzan will be in cinemas in July. [Read more…]

New The Legend of Tarzan Trailer – Shirtless Alexander Skarsgard heads for the jungle

March 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

legenda-of-tarzan-poster-slideMany believe Warner Bros. have taken a big gamble with The Legend Of Tarzan, not necessarily because of the subject, but because they’ve ended up with director David Yates doing post-production on two of their biggest movies at the same time. He’s working on both this and the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them, with the two films due out only four months apart.

However, even with the director doing double duty, the new trailer certainly make Tarzan seem intriguing, as well as showing once again how good Alexander Skarsgard looks with his shirt off.

The Legend of Tarzan Trailer – Him Alexander Skarsgard, her Margot Robbie

December 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tarzan-poster1-slideThe tales of Tarzan certainly looks like it’s gotten dramatic and moody if this first trailer for the big budget live-action take on Edgar Rice Burrough’s character is anything to go by. It also looks like the special effects wizards have got their work cut out for them, as there’s plenty of spectacle to behold (including Alexander Skargard’s abs).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Starring Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, John Hurt and Djimon Hounsou, and directed by David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 & Part 2), TARZAN will be released in cinemas on 8th July 2016.

‘It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Margot Robbie) at his side.  Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz).  But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.’

Only Lovers Left Alive (Blu-ray Review)

September 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska, Anton Yelchin, John Hurt
Director: Jim Jarmusch
Running Time: 123 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 15th 2014 (UK)

Like many Jim Jarmusch movies, Only Lovers Left Alive is the sort of film where one chunk of the audience will be wondering what sort of tedium they’ve just had to sit through and another chunk will be hailing it as a masterpiece. He is as impressively idiosyncratic director and his films determinedly refuse to be boxed. Many have described him as a cinematic poet, and it’s a very good description. What he’s great at is creating mood, feeling and thought, where narrative isn’t the driving force, it’s merely the thread that pulls the fabric together.

Tom Hiddleston is Adam, who’s living in Detroit making music but keen that nobody bothers him. That’s partly because he’s a vampire and hundreds of years old. He’s also depressed and filled with weariness at the direction mankind has taken and how it treats the promise it has, to the point whether he’s wondering if there’s any point living on to see the future. New Snowpiercer Red-Band Trailer – Chris Evans is looking dirty amongst an incredible cast

May 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Snowpiercer has had a few problems. Despite great reviews from film festivals, it became stuck in a battle between director Bong Joon-ho and The Weinstein Company over whether a recut version should be released commercially in the US and potentially other countries as well. The Weinsteins wanted to recut it, but Bong wants his version released.

It’s been stuck in limbo for English-speaking countries for over a year now, but eventually the Weinsteins relented and so the director’s original cut will hit US cinemas on June 27th (although annoyingly there’s still no UK date).

Ahead of that comes a new, rather cool, red-band trailer, which gives us a good feel for the movie.

The film is set on a ravaged Earth where the few human survivors are on a train (which gives the film its name) that travels around the globe. However a revolution is brewing amongst the passengers. The film has a great cast, following Curtis (Chris Evans), Mason (Tilda Swinton), Gilliam (John Hurt), Wilford (Ed Harris), Namgoong Minsu (Kang-ho Song), Edgar (Jamie Bell), Tanya (Octavia Spencer), Andrew (Ewen Bremner) and Yona (Ah-sung Ko) as they ride the train. Charlie Countryman Red-Band Trailer – Things get out of hand for Shia LaBeouf

November 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Charlie Countryman certainly has a good cast, including Shia LaBeouf, Evan Rachel Wood, Mads Mikkelsen, Rupert Grint, Vincent D’Onofrio, John Hurt, Til Schweiger and The Inbetweeners’ James Buckley. Now a new red band trailer for the film has arrive, showing just how out of hands things get for LaBeouf’s character.

Here’s the brief synopsis for the film, which was once titled The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman: ‘Traveling abroad, Charlie Countryman falls for Gabi, a Romanian beauty whose unreachable heart has its origins in Nigel, her violent, charismatic ex. As the darkness of Gabi’s past increasingly envelops him, Charlie resolves to win her heart, or die trying.’

Fredrik Bond maked his feature directorial debut with the movie, which is out in the US in November. [Read more…]

Only Lovers Left Alive Trailer – Tom Hiddleston & Tilda Swinton turn vampire

November 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton are trying out being undead in Only Lovers Left Alive, which attracted rather mixed notices on its Toronto Film Festival debut. However the trailer suggests it could be rather intriguing.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Starring Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin and Jeffrey Wright, ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE takes place against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangier and follows an underground musician, deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, who reunites with his resilient and enigmatic lover. Their love story has already endured several centuries at least, but their debauched idyll is soon disrupted by her wild and uncontrollable younger sister.’

It should be out next year. [Read more…]

More Than Honey (Cinema)

September 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: John Hurt
Director: Markuz Imhoof
Running Time: 91 mins
Certificate: E
Release Date: September 6th 2013

I’d like to coin a new genre of documentary, called the ‘Aren’t humans assholes’ genre. It’s becoming increasingly popular, where whatever the subject, at some point it has to get around to how people are screwing everything up. I’m not saying we aren’t screwing things up, but in everything from David Attenborough docs to More Than Honey, there’s an inevitability that at some point you’ll have to feel a bit guilty.
