The Watch (Blu-ray)

January 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade
Director: Akiva Schaffer
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 26th 2012

In one of the featurettes on The Watch Blu-ray, producer Shawn Levy says the key to the movie was the casting, and that’s kinda the problem, as they don’t seem to have spent a whole lot of time on anything else. The film lines up a potent quartet of comedy actors, and seems to assume their presence alone can make the movie work, even though the script spends most of the time meandering around a plot that’s pretty much join-the-dots. July 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Watch hits UK cinemas on August 24th, but ahead of that a red band blooper/improv reel has been released, showing Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and co having fun on the set. Here’s the synopsis: ‘An outrageous comedy in which four everyday suburban guys (played by Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade) come together to form a neighbourhood watch group, but only as an excuse to escape their humdrum lives one night a week. But when they accidentally discover that their town has become overrun with aliens posing as ordinary suburbanites, they have no choice but to save their neighbourhood – and the world – from total extermination.’

Ben Stiller & Jonah Hill Say Aloha

July 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ben Stiller and Jonah Hill are about to appear together in the alien invasion comedy The Watch, and it seems they had a good time working together, as THR reports that producer Shawn Levy is in talks with Stiller and Hill to headline Fox’s upcoming comedy Aloha.

Plot details for the film are being kept under wraps, but the title hints that it will most likely be set in Hawaii. The script for the comedy is being provided by Nick Stoller, who worked with Jonah Hill on Get Him to the Greek and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. This project’s fate will be determined by the scheduling and what kind of script the writer brings to the table.

The original idea for this new story was was conceived by Jonah Hill, and developed by Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller and Shawn Levy on the set of The Watch.

21 Jump Street 2 May Shoot This Autumn, Plus Jumanji Reboot Planned

July 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After 21 Jump Street grossed $200 million from a $42 million budget, it’s little surprise that Sony wants a sequel, but it is quite unusual they’re pushing one through so quick, as according to a THR interview with Sony exec. Mark Belgrad, it could shoot as early as this autumn.

Tatum and Hill were presumably contracted for a sequel when they signed up for the first film, and Belgrad says they’ll both be back for the follow-up. The exec is particularly excited about Tatum, saying “There are very few actors… who can do romance, action and comedy. We’re in business with two of them, Channing Tatum and Will Smith.”

And talking of Smith, Belgrad says there’s already talk of Men In Black 4, following the $600 million success on the third installment. He says, “We believe it is an ongoing franchise,” he said. “We’re going to do [another one], but we don’t have clarity yet on how it should be done.”

He also mentions that there’s a reboot of Jumanji in the works. That would seem a good idea, as a lot of kids love the plot of the 1995 movie, although the film itself is pretty flawed.

The interview has also led to a lot of speculation that Marc Webb won’t return to direct Amazing Spider-man 2, but Belgrad doesn’t actually say. He merely gives a diplomatic answer saying they’d like him back but nothing has been signed.

June 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The group finds itself in over its head when it uncovers an alien plot to destroy the world. A new international trailer has now shown up, ahead of the film’s release on August 29th.

Jean Dujardin Up For Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street

June 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While he may have been silent in The Artist – and won a Best Actor Oscar for it – Jean Dujardin is set to prove that he can talk, as Variety reports that he’s in talks to star in The Wolf of Wall Street for director Martin Scorsese.

Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play Jordan Belfort (the film is based on Belfort’s memoirs), who made millions as a fraudulent stockbroker. The story follows his meteoric rise and hard-partying lifestyle, before he was eventually caught and sentenced to 20 months in jail for securities fraud. Jean Dujardin will be a Swiss banker who laundered money for Belfort. Jonah Hill is also onboard as Belfort’s best friend, which Kyle Chandler is portraying the FBI agent who busts him.

Martin Scorsese is directing from a screenplay by Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire), adapted from Belfort’s autobiography. Filming will begin this August in New York City.

New Trailer For Ben Stiller’s The Watch

May 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After a Florida Neighbourhood Watch leader shot a black teenager in Florida, Fox decided this might be problematic with it’s planned film, Neighbourhood Watch. Cue a title change to The Watch and now a new trailer that sells the sci-fi angle of the film far more than anything that could in anyway be construed as vigilante action. The film is about a suburban neighborhood watch group that serves as a front for dads to get some male-bonding time away from their families. The group finds itself in over its head when it uncovers an alien plot to destroy the world.

Kyle Chandler Boards Scorsese’s Wolf Of Wall Street

May 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With the shoot scheduled for this summer, Martin Scorsese is busy filling out the cast of The Wolf of Wall Street. He’s already got Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill onboard, and now Deadline reports that Kyle Chandler has signed on too.

The film is an adaptation of the Jordan Belfort memoir, which follows the multimillionaire stockbroker through his dramatic rise and fall on Wall Street. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Belfort, who experiences a dramatic rise on Wall Street and gets lost in the drugs and excess of a hard partying lifestyle that comes hand in hand with all that money. His downfall is precipitous, as he spent 22 months in jail before straightening out his life.

Chandler will play FBI agent Coleman, who built the case against Jordan Belfort and took him down. Jonah Hill is playing Jordan Belfort’s close friend and business partner, who’s persuaded by Belfort to quit his job in the furniture business to jump into volatile world of stocks. The script was adapted by Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter.

Jonah Hill In Talks For Scorsese’s Wolf Of Wall Street

May 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago Martin Scorsese announced that the long-gestating Wolf Of Wall Street would be his next movie, and now she’s busy filling out the cast ahead on a summer shoot. Variety reports that Jonah Hill has entered into negotiations to join the movie, which Leo DiCaprio is already set to star in.

The drama is based on the autobiography of Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio), who made millions as a fraudulent stock broker operating out of Long Island. He spent 20 months in prison for his role in a massive securities fraud that involved widespread Wall Street corruption.

Hill will play Danny Porush, Belfort’s best friend who convinced him to quit his menial job as a furniture salesman and become a stock broker. The true story also served as the inspiration for the 2000 financial drama Boiler Room.

Martin Scorsese is directing from an adapted screenplay by Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter. Production is scheduled to begin this August in New York City.

21 Jump Street Sequel Already In The Works

March 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jonah Hill must be feeling pretty pleased with himself today. It was his idea to turn the 80s TV show 21 Jump Street into a modern buddy cop comedy, which has turned out to be a great success.

Even before the weekend numbers were in, Sony seemed confident they had a hit, as Variety reports they’re already working on a sequel, with Hill once more producing and working on the story, and Michael Bacall writing the screenplay. Bacall worked on the first 21 Jump Street film, as well as Project X and Scott Pilgrim.

There’s no info on what the follow-up may be about, or when we might see it, although with the box office numbers for 21 Jump Street already racking up, Sony is likely to want to get it in cinemas as soon as possible!

At the moment it’s very early days, so it’s not known whether directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller will return, and it isn’t thought Channing Tatum is currently signed for sequel, so they’ll need to bring him onboard too.
