In one of the featurettes on The Watch Blu-ray, producer Shawn Levy says the key to the movie was the casting, and that’s kinda the problem, as they don’t seem to have spent a whole lot of time on anything else. The film lines up a potent quartet of comedy actors, and seems to assume their presence alone can make the movie work, even though the script spends most of the time meandering around a plot that’s pretty much join-the-dots. Total Recall (2012) (Blu-ray)

Len Wiseman was always going to face an uphill battle remaking Total Recall, as the moment the film was announced legions of fans of the 1990 Arnie movie rose up to denounce the very idea of a do-over. They quickly decided the entire thing would be a disaster, a feeling that deepened when it was announced Len Wiseman would direct (the naysayers concentrated on the fact he made the Underworld movies, not that he did a pretty good with Die Hard 4.0). On the plus side though, it did mean that all Wiseman had to do to beat many people’s expectations was produce a movie that wasn’t awful, and he’s just about managed to do that. [Read more…]

Your enjoyment of The Baytown Outlaws is likely to be directly proportional to how much you like watching assholes (of the figurative not literal kind). There is pretty much nobody in The Baytown Outlaws that could be considered a nice person, and indeed the lead trio are in some respects the worst of the bunch, with their only redeeming feature being that we stick around them long enough to discover there is some humanity under the Southern redneck violence and willingness to kill absolutely anybody without a second thought.
