The Skeleton Twins (DVD Review)

March 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Luke Wilson, Ty Burrell, Boyd Holbrook
Director: Craig Johnson
Running Time: 89 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 16th 2015 (UK)

With SNL alumni Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader in the lead roles, you could be forgiven for thinking this would be a riotous gross-out laugh-fest, but right from the first few scenes The Skeleton Twins sets itself to be something far more indie dramedy.

Hader and Wiig are twins Milo and Maggie who aren’t completely estranged but have severely drifted apart after he left for LA to become an actor. Things aren’t going to well though, as the movie opens with Maggie narrowly escaping death and Milo attempting suicide. He heads back to their hometown to stay with Maggie and try to start over, but they soon discover that reuniting isn’t easy and that neither of them is in a place in their lives where they feel they should be. Nasty Baby Wins Teddy Award For Best LGBT Film At The Berlin Film Festival

February 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nasty-babyThere are lots of film festivals that give awards to LGBT-themed films, but there’s no doubt that one of the most important is the Teddy Award, handed out each year at the Berlin International Film Festival. It has a good history of picking great movies, including Ira Sachs’ excellent Keep The Lights On, Marco Berger’s Absent, Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right and John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig And The Angry Inch, along with last year’s winner, the wonderful The Way He Looks.

Now this year’s Teddys have been given out, with Sebastian Silva’s Nasty Baby taking the Best Feature prize. The movie stars Silva, alongside Kristen Wiig and Tunde Adebimpe, and centres on ‘Freddy, an artist whose desire for a baby has become something of an obsession.’ Freddy’s boyfriend is happy to have a child, and their friend Polly (Wiig) agrees to carry it, but the growing obsession may lead them to take a life. It’s described as a savagely satirical portrait of a group of presumptuous and self-absorbed bohemians.

The Best Documentary prize went to Aldo Garay’s El hombre nuevo (The New Man), about a trans* woman who was born in Nicaragua but raised in Uruguay, who returns to rediscover her home country. The Jury Prize meanwhile was handed to Stories Of Our Lives, an anthology of five short films about LGBT life in Kenya.

Here’s the full list of 2015 winners:

Best feature film: Nasty Baby – Sebastián Silva
Best documentary: El hombre nuevo – Aldo Garay
Best short film: San Cristobal – Omar Zúñiga Hidalgo
Jury award: Stories of Our Lives – Jim Chuchu
Special award: Udo Kier

All-Female Ghostbuster Reboot Cast Announced, Including Melissa McCarthy & Kristen Wiig

January 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kristen-WiigA couple of weeks ago it was rumoured that Melissa McCarthy was in talks to be one fourth of the long-gestating all-female Ghostbuster crew in Sony’s planned reboot of the 1980s franchise. Now the four women who will be battling the spooks have been announced and it does indeed include McCarthy, alongside Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.

It appears none of them have signed on the dotted line, but THR suggests it’s just a matter of ironing out the details.

There’s still no news on the exact plot, but the women will certainly be going up against some supernatural foes. Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson are expected to appear, and if they can convince him, there’s still an outside shot Bill Murray will show up too.

Paul Feig will direct with a summer shoot planned.

Jessica Chastain & Kristen Wiig May Star Opposite Matt Damon In The Martian

September 3, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jessica-chastainFor a few months now Matt Damon and Ridley Scott have been preparing to team up for The Martian. While the film is largely about a man stranded alone on Mars, he’s not 100% of the story, and now it looks like he’s getting some company, as Variety and Deadline report that Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig are circling the movie.

There’s no news on who they might play, although it’s likely one of the actresses will be the Commander of the NASA mission that results in Damon get stuck on the Red Planet, while the other will be back at Mission Control on Earth.

The film is based on the self-published e-book by Andy Weir, with Drew Goddard having adapted the script (Goddard at one time was set to direct, but was replaced by Scott after Drew went off to make the Spider-man spin-off The Sinister Six).

The Skeleton Twins Trailer – A gay Bill Hader & a straight Kristen Wiig are estranged siblings

June 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

skeleton-twinsIf you heard that SNL alums Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader were starring in a movie together, you’d expect zany comedy to ensue. And if you heard Hader was playing a gay character, you might have visions of his outrageously camp SNL character, Stefan.

However The Skeleton Twins is a lot more dramatic than you might expect, even if they haven’t completely given up on the comedy.

they play Maggie (Wiig) and Milo (Hader), who are twins who went their separate ways years ago, but when they coincidentally cheat death on the same day, the shock makes them reunite and figure out how their lives went wrong. Maggie starts to re-examine her marriage to nature-loving slacker Lance (Luke Wilson), while the gay Milo goes to visit old flame Rich (Ty Burrell).

The film is due in cinemas later this year, but take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Jason Sudeikis May Go On A Heist With Zach Galifianakis & Owen Wilson

June 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jason-SudeikisIt’s got a great cast even if it doesn’t have a name. The untitled film previously called Loomis Fargo already has Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson and Kristen Wiig attached to star, and now they may be joined by Jason Sudeikis, who is in talks to star.

The movie is loosely based on a true story about an armoured truck driver (Galifianakis) who is convinced to help participate in a $17 million robbery. However his partners are quick to turn on him once the job is done and leave him stranded in Mexico while they go off to live the high life. Then it’s time to settle the score.

Wilson is set to play the leader of the half-baked criminal, while Wiig will be Galifianakis’ love interest. It’s not clear who Sudeikis will be.

Assuming he signs on the dotted line, Jason will be on the film’s set when it starts shooting in July, with Jared Hess directing. (Source: Variety)

June 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Kristen-WiigWith her star having risen on the big screen following Bridesmaids, Kristen Wiig is now using that clout to step behind the camera to make her directorial debut with a new untitled comedy, according the New York Times.

The film will reunite her with her Bridesmaids co-writer Annie Mumolo, who will co-script the film with Wiig and also star.

Watch The First Five Minutes Of How To Train Your Dragon 2

April 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After a four year wait, How To Train Your Dragon 2 is nearly here. To help remind people why we should all be looking forward to returning to the world of Hiccup and Toothless, the first five minutes of the movie have been released.

It’s slightly surprising we’ve got it so early, as the film doesn’t hit US cinemas until June 13th and will be out in the UK July 4th – although it does a good job of suggesting this is a movie that’ll be worth the 3D admission.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set for release in June 2014, The thrilling second chapter of the epic HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON trilogy brings us back to the fantastical world of Hiccup and Toothless five years after the two have successfully united dragons and vikings on the island of Berk. While Astrid, Snoutlout and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island’s new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds.

‘When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. Now, Hiccup and Toothless must unite to stand up for what they believe while recognizing that only together do they have the power to change the future of both men and dragons.’ [Read more…]

New How to Train Your Dragon 2 Trailer – Hiccup and Toothless are back in action

April 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s taken a little while for DreamWorks to produce a follow-up to their 2010 hit How To Train Your Dragon (although there has been a pretty good TV series). However How To Train Your Dragon 2 is coming this summer, and now we can get a fresh look with a new trailer.
