Matt Damon, Peter Stormare & Sanjeev Bhaskar Up For Gilliam’s Zero Theorem

October 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Terry Gilliam is about to start shooting the very intriguing Zero Theorem, and he’s busy rounding out the cast, as it’s been revealed that Matt Damon is taking a small role in the movie, while Peter Stormare and Sanjeev Bhaskar have also signed up. Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton and Melanie Thierry are already set to star.

Vulture got the news on Damon, after they bumped into him at the premiere of Argo. He told them, ‘I’m just doing a very small part in [The Zero Theorem]. Someone finally gave him money to do this one, thank God. It’s with Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton. I’d do anything for Terry. It’s been ten years since I last worked with him [in The Brothers Grimm]. I wrote Terry this whole e-mail, because we had this whole conversation about what the character would look like, because the story takes place in the future, but he had a specific look that he wanted, but then I had to [points to shaved head, which he has for Elysium], and I said, “Terry, what should we do?” And he said, “Actually, we can take advantage of the fact that your head is shaved. Why don’t we change your hairline?” So he mocked up a picture and sent me a real receding hairline, with white spiked hair. “We might as well take advantage of the fact that you’re bald and really do something, present you in a way you’ve never been seen before.”’

We don’t know too much about Peter Stormare and Sanjeev Bhaskar’s characters either, although announcing the casting on Facebook, Gilliam said “Excitement at the front! Zero Theorem now has two more brilliant actors on board: Peter Stormare and Sanjeev Bhaskar. Not just comic geniuses but great friends. They will be sharing two parts at the same time. I hope you like the look.” Quite what that means isn’t clear.

The movie is about a scientist (Waltz) working on a theorem to determine the reason for human existence, who gets numerous visitors, some of whom may be deliberately trying to delay his work.

Promised Land Trailer – John Krasinski and Matt Damon face off

September 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Matt Damon reunites with Gus Van Sant for Promised Land, with Damon teaming up with John Krasinski to write the screenplay, along with a story credit for author Dave Eggers. Corporate salesman Steve Butler (Matt Damon) arrives in a rural town with his sales partner, Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand). With the town having been hit hard by the economic decline of recent years, the two outsiders see the local citizens as likely to accept their company’s offer, for drilling rights to their properties, as much-needed relief. What seems like an easy job for the duo becomes complicated by the objection of a respected schoolteacher (Hal Holbrook) with support from a grassroots campaign led by another man (John Krasinski) who counters Steve both personally and professionally. It’s due out in the US in early January, but no UK date is currently set.

First On-Set Pic Of Damon & Douglas In Liberace Biopic, Behind The Candelabra

August 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For the last couple of years, director Steven Soderbergh has been slowly putting together a biopic of closeted gay entertainer Liberace, called Behind The Candelabra. Now the cameras are rolling, with Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his younger lover, Scott Thorson.

The first image of the two actors on set has been snapped, via E!, which sees Douglas and Damon really rocking the 1970s look for the HBO movie.

While Liberace went to his grave never publicly saying he was gay, after his relationship with Thorson broke up, the younger man – who had plenty of troubles of his own, including drug addiction – sued the entertainer for palimony. They settled out of court shortly before Liberace died of AIDS in 1987. The film about the two of them should arrive sometime in 2013. It’s due for an initial TV airing in the States, but may get a cinematic release over here.

First Image Of Matt Damon In Elysium Surfaces

July 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Matt Damon is rocking the shaved head look and showing off his oversized gun (really, that thing is ridiculous) in the first image from Elysium, which The Playlist has scanned from the latest issue of EW. The movie is Neill Blomkamp’s long-awaited follow-up to District 9, and stars Damon alongside Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, William Fichtner, Sonia Braga, and Diego Luna.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.’ The film’s currently due out March, 2013.

Full Synopsis For Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium Released

June 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s taken Neill Blomkamp quite a while to get his follow-up to District 9 sorted out, but he’s now filmed Elysium, with Matt Damon and Jodie Foster starring. However the movie has been shrouded in mystery, with the main info we’ve had being that it’s a sci-fi tale laced with socio-political concerns.

However now a much better synopsis has been released via Collider, which says: ‘In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.’

The first test screenings are about to take place, with a release planned for March 2013. It’s a potentially interesting plot, but will very much depend on the execution, something Blomkamp can hopefully pull off.

Out Actor Cheyenne Jackson Joins Liberace Biopic

June 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

HBO is certainly staking a claim to be able to compete with Hollywood, getting some of the best names in the business for their TV output, both in terms of series and films. That said, they’re really taking things up a notch with their Liberace biopic, Behind The Candelabra, which Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh is directing.

The film already has Michael Douglas as Liberace, and Matt Damon as his long-time live-in lover, Scott Thorson (although Liberace denied publicly to his dying day that he was gay). Dan Aykroys is also onboard as the flamboyant pianist’s manager, with Debbie Reynolds as Liberace’s mother.

Now the cast has grown once more, as The Playlist reports that gay (and exceedingly hot) actor Cheyenne Jackson has signed on, as have Rob Lowe and Boyd Holbrook. Lowe will play a plastic surgeon in the movie and Holbrook will be one of Liberace’s youthful lovers. Unfortunately Jackson’s role hasn’t been revealed. Variety adds that Scott Bakula will also be in the movie, playing Bob Black, the choreographer who introduced Liberace to Thorson.

Shooting is due to begin this summer. While it will first play on TV in the US, the plan is for it to get a cinema release in other countries (although it may also initially play on TV in the UK, depending on the details of HBO’s exclusive deal with Sky).

Affleck & Damon Reuniting For Whitey Bulger Biopic

October 25, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

For quite a while now, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have been looking at ways they can reunite on screen, and now it seems they’ve settled on a new biopic of the notorious crime figure Whitey Bulger. Ben Affleck revealed the news to GQ, saying that he will direct, co-star, and produce the untitled biopic, while Matt Damon will star as Whitey Bulger. Casey Affleck has also landed a supporting role.

Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter is writing the screenplay, which will span Whitey Bulger’s entire life, from childhood through his rise up the Boston criminal ranks and on to becoming an FBI informant. Whitey Bulger was a notorious Boston crime figure who disappeared in 1994 after he learned the FBI was going to arrest him. He was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List for 12 of his 16 years on the lam, before his arrest last June in Santa Monica, California. Jack Nicholson’s Frank Costello character in The Departed is loosely based on him (in fact Departed producer Graham King also has a Whitey Bulger biopic in the works).

Ben Affleck commented “We’ve heard about Whitey Bulger since we were kids, and we are excited by the prospect of putting it on screen.”

It isn’t known when the movie might go into production, and timing may depend on whether Affleck signs on the dotted line to make The Stand, which he recently became attached to.

Matt Damon Plans His Directorial Debut

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

About a year ago, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck set up a new production company that seemed designed to help both of them get directorial projects off the ground easier. For a while it appeared Damon wanted to make his helming debut with Father Daughter Time: A Tale Of Armed Robbery And Eskimo Kisses, but we haven’t heard much about that for a while, and now Variety reports he may kick off his directing career with a different film, based on a script Damon co-wrote with The Office star John Krasinski and author Dave Eggers (the latter two also came up with the idea).

While this sort of thing would normally seem like a vanity project for a bunch of well-connected people, you’ve got to think the conjunction of Damon, Krasinski and Eggers has to be a good thing. The film is a salesman (Damon) who arrives in a small town and has his entire life called into question. That’s not much of a plot description admittedly, but presumably there’s more to it than that – indeed Krasinski’s going to star as well, so his character has to be involved, but we just don’t know how at the moment.

Damon and Krasinksi have now taken the script to Warner Bros. and while the studio hasn’t given it the thumbs up yet, with a relatively small budget and the names attached, it shouldn’t have much trouble getting funded. Now we’ll just have to wait and see whether Damon can have as much directing success and Ben Affleck.
