October 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mockingjay-part-2-poster2-slideOn November 19th we’ll get to see how The Hunger Games series comes to an end with Mockingjay – Part 2. It’s certainly been quite a ride to get here, with some really good movies which have become box office titans.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow [Donald Sutherland] in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale [Liam Hemsworth], Finnick [Sam Claflin], and Peeta [Josh Hutcherson] – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to liberate the citizens of Panem, and stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her.

‘The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.’

Take a look at the final trailer for the movie below. [Read more…]

A Little Chaos (DVD Review)

August 24, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Alan Rickman, Helen McRory, Stanley Tucci
Director: Alan Rickman
Running Time: 117 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: August 24th 2015 (UK)

It’s 17th Century France and King Louis XIV (Alan Rickman) is on the throne. He wants a revamp of the Versailles gardens and hires architect Andre Le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts) to build it. However, he needs help from a landscape artist and so brings in widower Sabine De Barra (Kate Winslet).

They have a few initial problems as he likes classical geometry and straight lines, while she is more forward-thinking and asymmetrical in her design (metaphor alert). Despite this, the two begin to fall for one another. This should be okay as Andre has an open marriage, however his wife (Helen McRory) isn’t keen on the feelings he develops for Sabine and plans to destroy what they are creating together. July 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mockingjay-part-2-pic1-slideYoutube has revamped the look of their videos, although we’re presuming that wasn’t done in preparation for the release of the first full The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 Trailer. However the two have coincided, and you can take a look below.

Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 Trailer – Katniss is going to war

June 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mockingjay-part-2-pic1-slideFor the first bit of this Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 trailer it seems things are going surprisingly well for Katniss and her allies. However it should come as no surprise to discover that doesn’t last long and soon the war that Part 1 promised is in full swing.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. Fortitude – Season 1 (DVD Review)

May 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Richard Dormer, Stanley Tucci, Sophie Grabol, Veronica Echegui, Michael Gambon
Director: Various
Running Time: 570 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: June 1st 2015 (UK)

I enjoyed Fortitude but there is a slight sense with the 12-part series that a bunch of people sat in a room and came up with a list of TV shows they liked, and then tried to put together something that included a little bit of all of them. As a result there are echoes of Broadchurch, Lost, Twin Peaks, The X-Files, The Killing and various other things.

Indeed it gets to the point where it’s difficult not to feel the series ends up as something rather different from how it begins, to the point that those who were hoping for the initial murder-mystery might feel a little cheated when it goes a little sci-fi (even if it is very much at the softer, more realistic end of sci-fi). However, those who are open and stick with it are likely to find it rewarding. [Read more…]

Transformers: Age Of Extinction (Blu-ray Review)

November 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer
Director: Michael Bay
Running Time: 165 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: November 17th 2014 (UK)

Reviewing Transformers: Age Of Extinction seems slightly pointless. It has an abysmal 18% rating on RottenTomatoes, with only 32 out of 178 that collated reviews saying it’s a decent movie. Despite that it’s currently the highest grossing movie of 2014 worldwide with over $1 billion in the bank (largely thanks to a gargantuan gross in China). So whether anyone says it’s good or bad seems a little irrelevant.

But just for the record, it’s not a good movie. [Read more…]

The Wind Rises (Blu-ray Review)

September 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Martin Short, Stanley Tucci
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Running Time: 126 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: September 29th 2014 (UK)

While Japanese anime that covers weirdly sexual sci-fi, giant robots and horror has found its place in the West, what still seems like an anomaly to us are animated movies for grown-ups that don’t go that far into the fantastical. In fact for several reasons, and despite how good it is, it’s difficult to imagine The Wind Rises ever getting a release over here if it weren’t directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki (and it’s probably his last film).

The movie is a biopic of one of Miyazaki’s heroes, Jirô Horikoshi, starting with his youth as a young boy in the 1920s who dreams of being able to fly, but knowing that due to his bad eyesight he can never be a pilot. Once grown he heads off to university to become an engineer before getting a job helping to design planes. [Read more…]

Mark Ruffalo & Rachel McAdams Go Into The Spotlight For A Film About Priest Sex Abuse

August 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mark-ruffaloAfter the huge ructions over the sexual abuse of children by priests in the Catholic Church, it’s almost surprising the film world has only nibbled at the edges of the scandal – probably because it’s such a hot button and difficult topic.

However now Tom McCarthy (Win Win) is planning to direct a film about the decades-long cover-up of paedophile priests in Massachusetts, and THR reports he’s living up a great cast including Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams and Stanley Tucci.

The film, called Spotlight, is based around the year-long investigation by The Boston Globe that uncovered the fact the Church knew it has abusive priests in its midst, but systematically hushed it up. The investigation by the paper’s ‘Spotlight Team’ led to the resignation of Cardinal Bernard Law, who had hidden years of serial abuse. It helped expose the way the Catholic Church dealt with abuse, with has since become a major scandal around the world.

Ruffalo and McAdams will play reporters, but it’s not clear who Tucci and Keaton will be. Josh Singer wrote the script, which landed on the Black List of the best unproduced screenplays.
