The Cobbler (DVD Review)

January 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Adam Sandler, Melonie Diaz, Steve Buscemi, Method Man, Dan Stevens
Director: Tom McCarthy
Running Time: 99 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: January 4th 2016 (UK)

The Cobbler is not Adam Sandler in zany mood, but he’s not being 100% serious either. He certainly pulls things back from his usual performances and enters mumbling mode, which is admittedly more watchable than he often is. He is Max, a cobbler who is forced to use an old shoemaking machine when his newer one breaks. He discovers that the machine has magical properties, as he now has the ability to put on somebody else’s shoes and literally become them.

At first Max thinks he’s going to be able to have some fun with his powers (including a creepily rapey sequence involving a cameo from Dan Stevens and a woman in a shower), but he soon gets caught up in a tricky situation with a bunch of bad guys. Looking into the lives of his customers also makes his re-evaluate the attempts to save his neighbourhood, which he’d previously ignored, and so he sets out to use his powers to stop the baddies destroying everything. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone Trailer And Posters – Steve Carell turns Vegas magician

December 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Magicians are going to be big in 2013 – or at least Hollywood is hoping so – as we’ve got Louis Leterrier’s Now You See Me and also the more comedic The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. Now the first posters and trailer for the latter movie have arrived.

The film features Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde, Alan Arkin, James Gandolfini, Jim Carrey and Jay Mohr, working from a script by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) have ruled the Las Vegas strip for years, raking in millions with illusions as big as Burt’s growing ego. But lately the duo’s greatest deception is their public friendship, while secretly they’ve grown to loathe each other. Facing cutthroat competition from guerilla street magician Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), whose cult followingsurges with each outrageous stunt, even their show looks stale. But there’s still a chance Burt and Anton can save the act—both onstage and off—if Burt can get back in touch with what made him love magic in the first place.’

The film is due out next spring. Take a look at the trailer above and click on the pics below to see the posters.

Boardwalk Empire – Season 1 (Blu-ray)

January 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt, Michael Shannon, Kelly MacDonald
Director: Various
Running Time: 700 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: January 9th, 2012

Mixing fact and fiction, the past with present sensibilities and a great cast, Boardwalk Empire hit TV with a bang. Much of the initial interest came from the fact Martin Scorsese directed the first episode, and his influence is felt throughout the 12 episodes of Season 1. With the little expense spared in the creation of 1920s Atlantic City, it’s an incredibly rich world full of well-written characters, plenty of intrigue, decadence and moments of shocking violence.

The series centres around Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), a fictionalised version of a real-life New Jersey prohibition figure, who’s the treasurer of Atlantic City and one of its most esteemed businessmen – largely because he’s got the entire city in his pocket and his criminal network is pretty much untouchable [Read more…]

Rampart Trailer – Woody Harrelson turns corrupt cop

November 21, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

‘Woody Harrelson is the most corrupt cop ever seen on screen’ is a pretty bold claim for a trailer for open with, especially as Rampart is meant to be based on a true story. In the film it’s late-1990s LA and Officer Dave Brown (Harrelson) is a Vietnam vet, Rampart Precinct cop, dedicated to doing “the people’s dirty work” and asserting his own code of justice, often blurring the lines between right and wrong to maintain his action-hero state of mind. When he gets caught on tape beating a suspect, he finds himself in a personal and emotional downward spiral as the consequences of his past sins and his refusal to change his ways in light of a department-wide corruption scandal seal his fate. The movie has a superb cast and looks like it could be pretty good. It’ll be out early next year, when it’ll be having a bit of an awards run.

Olivia Wilde In Talks For Burt Wonderstone

November 1, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Until last week the cast of the magician comedy Burt Wonderstone consisted of just Steve Carell, but a few days ago Jim Carrey came onboard and since then the other roles have been filling up fast, with THR reporting that Olivia Wilde and Steve Buscemi are both in talks for the movie, while Variety adds James Gandolfini has signed up.

The film centres on Steve Carell’s title character, a popular Las Vegas magician who gets upstaged by a hip new street performer (Carrey) with a penchant for dangerous tricks. Wonderstone then goes on a journey of self-discovery to reclaim his love of magic. Wilde is in talks to play Carell’s love interest (only a 22-year age difference there, but Hollywood has never had a problem with middle-aged men and young ladies), while Buscemi is set play Carell’s longtime friend and on-stage partner who quits the act after getting injured. Gandolfini meanwhile will be the owner of the casino where Carell’s character performs.

Sarah Silverman was also in contention for the love-interest role, but it appears they’ve decided on Wilde. Don Scardino will direct, with shooting set to begin in January.
