This was always going to be an eagerly anticipated take on an American Classic, now brought to us by Disney and directed by Andrew Stanton of Pixar fame, who helmed the brilliant Wall-E and Finding Nemo.

The John Carter books, by Edgar Rice Boroughs (of Tarzan fame), are relatively little known outside the US, but to a certain extent they’re America’s equivalent of British classics such as Lord Of The Rings and Narnia, loved by children and adults alike. I knew very little of John Carter prior to hearing about the release, but the Avatar-esque trailers were promising. Unfortunately though the end result feels more like the dodgy adaptation that turned out to be The Golden Compass, although thankfully not as bad as that movie. [Read more…]

Watch 10-Minutes Of John Carter – What happens before he gets to Mars?

Disney’s big-budget sci-fi fantasy, John Carter, hits cinemas this Friday and to help prepare us, 10 minutes from the opening of the movie has popped up online, so we can see what happens to American Civil War veteran John before he gets mysteriously transported to Mars. Carter seems to be the very defnition of an angry young man, who isn’t having much fun in the Arizona territory, as while he’s looking for a cave full of gold, he’s got to deal with Bryan Cranston and his lovely blonde wig.

Final Trailer For John Carter

On March 9th, Disney finally releases John Carter, and to get us in the mood, a final trailer for the movie has been released, which is filled with full-on CGI action from start to finish. Here’s the synopsis: ‘John Carter tells the tale of war-weary, former military captain John Carter, who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly involved in a conflict of epic proportions between the inhabitants of the planet. John Carter – the newest movie from Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton is an action adventure story set on Barsoom, the exotic and mysterious planet we know as Mars. Based on the classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of Tarzan, John Carter is the story which inspired many of the most imaginative and well known Hollywood movies, past and present. Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the John Carter character, first created in the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel.’

Mark Wahlberg On For Headhunters & Lone Survivor

Mark Wahlberg is certainly planning to keep busy, as he’s already got several movies he’s planning to shoot this year, and now he’s adding a couple more to his dance-list, as Shortlist reports he’s eyeing a remake of the Norwegian movie Headhunters, while Deadline says that he, Ben Foster and Taylor Kitsch are all interested in the Navy SEAL movie, Lone Survivor.

Headhunters follows Roger Brown, who is good at two things: hiring people and stealing from them. He then risks it all when he meets a former mercenary who owns a painting worth millions. Wahlberg commented, “I saw a film recently called Headhunters. It’s a Norwegian film and it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. I met with the director and pleaded with the studio that has the rights so we’ll see if we get anywhere with that.”

Slightly more certain is Lone Survivor, an adaptation of a book by Marcus Luttrell, which tells the harrowing story of how Luttrell and his Navy SEAL team fought to stay alive after being ambushed by Taliban forces in Afghanistan in 2005. Wahlberg is set to play Luttrell, with Taylor Kitsch and Ben Foster playing the other key Navy Seal roles.

Battleship helmer Peter Berg is on directing duties, and was inspired to write the drama after spending a month with a SEAL team in Iraq. The director had this to say about the movie: “Bin Laden’s death has cleared the way for this, a movie that will be an unapologetically patriotic film that honors and pays homage to an incredible group of badass guys who do this.”

John Carter White Ape Fight Sneak Peek

One of the centrepieces of the John Carter marketing push has been a big battle between the title character and what are being referred to as ‘white apes’ (that’s what they were called in Edgar Rice Burroughs original stories), which are impressively ugly, six-limbed behemoths that want to tear Carter to bits. Now an extended sneak peak at the effects filled battle has popped up online, which is well worth a look, and not just for the fight-scene itself, as it also includes a lot of very cool footage from a film that’s starting to get some really strong buzz (not least because it seems to be an entire movie dedicated to keeping Taylor Kitsch as scantily clad as possible). The film hits cinemas on March 9th.

John Carter: An Introduction Featurette

It’s just a few short weeks until John Carter hits cinemas on March 9th, and now a short but fairly informative featurette has popped up online to give us a bit of an intro to the movie for those who aren’t clued into Edgar Rice Burrough’s classic characters. It certainly looks like filmmakering on a massive scale, but whether Andrew Stanton has managed to make this year’s first true blockbuster is yet to be seen.

John Carter Extended Super Bowl Spot

It’s not long now until Disney unleashes its $200 million behemoth John Carter on audiences, with the film due to arrive on March 9th. To get people excited they’ve released an extended version of their Super Bowl TV spot, which you can watch here. Battleship Super Bowl Spot

There’s little doubt that Battleship has pretty much nothing to do with the classic game and everything with trying to ape Transformers to give Hasbro yet another enormous franchise they can sell toys on the back of (although with Universal making the movie this time, rather than Paramount/Dreamworks. The more we see, the more like Transformers-At-Sea it looks, although that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It certainly looks pretty explosive in this new Super Bowl spot, so take a look.

First Look At Oliver Stone’s Savages

The first image has appeared online from Oliver Stone’s upcoming movie Savages. While Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson are playing the main characters, the first pic shows Benicio Del Toro’s drug dealer menacing a rather battered looking Blake Lively.

Based on Don Winslow’s novel, Savages is about two California weed growers (Kitsch & Johnson), whose lives are turned upside down when their shared girlfriend (Blake Lively) is kidnapped by a Mexican cartel enforcer (Benicio Del Toro). The film is due in cinemas in September.
