Paranorman Studio Laika Announces Boxtrolls, With A Great Voice Cast Attached

February 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

here-be-monsters-alan-snowAfter the Oscar-nominated success of Paranorman, animation studio Laika has revealed their third movie, The Boxtrolls, based in Alan Snow‘s book Here Be Monsters! Open Season co-director Anthony Stacchi and Coraline/ParaNorman story artist Graham Annable are set to direct the movie, which already has an impressive voice cast attached.

Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette, Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade, Tracy Morgan, Jared Harris, and Isaac Hempstead-Wright are all set to lend their dulcet tones to the 3D stop-motion/CG hybrid, which has already entered production with a October 17th, 2014 release set.

Here’s a rundown of the plot: ‘The Boxtrolls is a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed.

‘In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs (voiced by Mr. Hempstead-Wright), since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by villainous pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher (Mr. Kingsley), who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kindhearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and adventurous rich girl Winnie (Ms. Fanning) to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change – and cheese.’

Deadline has posted some concept art from the film, which you can see below.

Mental Trailer – Toni Collette reunites with the director of Muriel’s Wedding

November 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Having Toni Collette as your nanny sounds like it’d be quite fun, but in Mental she certainly shakes up a family where all the daughters think they’re mental. The film sees her reunite with director PJ Hogan for the first time since Muriel’s Wedding. Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Moochmore girls are certain they all suffer from some kind of undiagnosed mental illness – because if they’re not crazy then they’re just unpopular. Their mother Shirley (Rebecca Gibney) – unable to cope with her demanding daughters and unsupported by her philandering politician husband, Barry (Anthony LaPaglia) – suffers a nervous breakdown. After Barry commits his wife to a mental hospital (telling his constituents that “she’s on holiday”) he finds himself alone with 5 teenage girls he barely knows. Desperate, he impulsively picks up a hitchhiker named Shaz (Collette) and installs her in his home as nanny to his daughters.’ The movie is out on November 16th.

Foster (DVD)

November 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Toni Collette, Ioan Gruffudd, Maurice Cole, Richard E Grant, Hayley Mills
Director: Jonathan Newman
Running Time: 90 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: November 5th 2012

Foster is one of those films that could have been utterly wonderful, but sadly falls short. While it has charm, it doesn’t feel genuine enough to really hit home in the heart-warming, rather sentimental way it’s trying to.

Zooey (Toni Collette) and Alec (Ioan Gruffudd) are a couple who’d like another child, but for psychosomatic reason, she is unable to conceive. They decide to try and foster a kid, but things go a little faster than they expected when seven-year-old Eli (Maurice Cole) simply turns up on their doorstep and announces he’s been sent to live with them. They take him in while the records are checked as to whether he’s really meant to be there. The couple soon discover that despite his size, Eli’s got a surprisingly adult attitude, including an interest in the recession and watching CNN. [Read more…]

Sam Neill & Rosamund Pike Go A Long Way Down As Filming Commences

September 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Principal photography is underway on the Nick Hornby adaptation, A Long Way Down, with Rosamund Pike and Sam Neill joining Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul and Imogen Poots in the movie (and as you can see above, the first image has also been released).

The film is currently being shot on location in England and Spain from a script by Jack Thorne (How I Live Now, The Scouting Book for Boys), with Pascal Chaumeil (Heartbreaker, Fly Me to the Moon) directing.

The film starts on New Year’s Eve on the top of a London skyscraper. Martin (Brosnan) is literally on the edge. A once-beloved TV personality, he’s now desperate to jump. But he’s not alone. Single mother Maureen, (Collette), sassy teen Jess (Poots), and failed musician turned pizza-delivery boy JJ (Paul), have all turned up on the same roof with the same plan. Instead of jumping, these four strangers make a pact to stay alive and stay together until Valentine’s Day at least. The movie then follows this group of unlikely friends as they try to pull back from the brink.

The movie is going to have a quick turnarouns, as the plan is to have it in in cinemas in January 2013.

Steve Carell & Toni Collette Reteam For The Way, Way Back

April 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Back in 2006, Toni Collette and Steve Carell had a big indie success with Little Miss Sunshine, and now they’re planning to get back together for a film called The Way, Way Back, from Oscar-winning writers Jim Rash and Nat Faxon (The Descendants), who will also direct.

Variety has the news, and says the film is about a teenage boy who has to struggle through a summer holiday while dealing with a bored, inattentive mother (Collette) and a hard-drinking, drug taking and cheating stepfather (Carell). Allison Janney, Sam Rockwell and Annasophia Robb are also signed up for the movie.

The script has been around for a couple of years, and will hopefully go into production this summer.

Jesus Henry Christ Trailer

March 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jesus Henry Christ seems like it would like to be The Kids At All Right, but a little more quirky and with fewer lesbian mothers! The film stars Toni Collette as the mother of a precociously smart 10-year-old who want to know who his father is, which sends him on a quest to discover more about the man who donated the sperm to make him. The film should be out later this year.

Toni Collette & Danny Huston Join Making of Psycho

March 22, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just yesterday, we reported that Jessica Biel had joined the cast of Sacha Gervasi’s Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, and now Variety reports that Toni Collette, Danny Huston, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Michael Wincott are in talks as well.

As the title suggests, the movie is about famed director Alfred Hitchcock (Anthony Hopkins) as he struggles to create his 1960 horror classic Psycho, which despite his stature in movie world, was a tough project he got little support for before its release. Helen Mirren is also onboard as Hitchcock’s wife, Alma, while Scarlet Johansson and James D’Arcy will be Psycho stars Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins.

Toni Collette will play Peggy Robertson, the director’s longtime assistant, while Danny Huston is portraying Whitfield Cook, a friend of the Hitchcock’s wife. Michael Stuhlbarg will play Alfred’s agent, the legendary Lew Wasserman, while Michael Wincott will be Ed Gein, the famed killer whose exploits Psycho is partially based on.

Production is due to begin in the next few months.
