Boys On Film 18: Heroes Trailer – The gay short film collection comes of age

Boys On Film has reached legal age with is latest instalment! The award-winning gay short film compilation reaches its coming-of-age with Boys On Film 18: Heroes. The release features ten uplifting and powerful tales recounting the lives of everyday gay, bi or transgender heroes, fighting for the right to be be themselves. The shorts include the docudrama The Colour Of His Hair starring God’s Own Country’s Josh O’Connor (God’s Own Country), the Egyptian animation Half A Life, and Iris Prize 2017 winner, Mother Knows Best.

The trailer for Boys On Film 18 has been released. Take a look at it below, along with more info about the short films included in the release. It’ll be released on DVD & VoD on April 23rd.

DANIEL (UK, 2015, 14 mins)
Director: Dean Loxton
Starring Henry Garrett (Poldark) and Éva Magyar (X-Men: First Class)
Dániel is studying in London while working part-time as an escort. He is invited to a lunch by his best friend Nori. She surprises everyone by introducing her new lover Tom, with unforeseen consequences.

BUDDY (The Netherlands, 2015, 12 mins)
Director: Niels Bourgonje
When a young man is asked by his ex lover to support him during an HIV test, he sees an opportunity to find out if there is still a chance for reconciliation.

HALF A LIFE (Egypt, Indonesia, USA, Netherlands, 2017, 12mins)
Director: Tamara Shogaolu
Pairing the intimate narration of a young, Egyptian gay activist with a highly stylized animation, Half A Life brings the streets of Cairo to life through this firsthand account of the increasingly oppresive social climate of Egypt.

UNDRESS ME (Sweden, 2013, 15 mins)
Directed by Victor Lindgren.
When Micke meets Mikaela on a night out, he is immediately attracted to her, as he can sense that there’s something different about her. When Mikaela explains that she is trans he gets confused, aggressive and also curious. Undress Me examines and challenges our perceptions of gender.

THE COLOUR OF HIS HAIR (UK, 2017, 23 mins)
Director: Sam Ashby
Starring: BAFTA-nominated Josh O’Connor (God’s Own Country.
Based on an unrealised film script written in 1964, when homosexuality is still illegal, The Colour of His Hair merges drama and documentary into an impressionistic meditation on queer life before and after the partial legalisation of homosexuality in 1967.

SILLY GIRL (UK, 2016, 5 mins)
Director: Hope Dickson Leach
Starring: Clara Baxendale (My Mad Fat Diary) and Jason Barker (A Deal with the Universe).
Silly Girl is all about the first time you are noticed, that first time someone sees you for who you are and the transformative nature of that moment. From the Director of The Levelling and co-written by Game of Thrones’ Ellie Kendrick.

AN EVENING (Denmark, 2016, 10 mins)
Director: Søren Green
Frederik has had sex for the first time with Mathias, his friend from school. Whilst Mathias embraces what they have done and is keen to move forward, Frederik struggles to understand his own feelings and his newfound desire for Mathias.

AIDS: DOCTORS AND NURSES TELL THEIR STORIES (UK, 2017, 26 mins)
Director: Alejandro Medina
For the first time, doctors and nurses who cared for Britain’s first AIDS patients in the 1980s tell of the extraordinary situation they found themselves in and the rules they had to break to help patients forgotten by the state.

IT’S CONSUMING ME (Germany, 2012, 3 mins)
Director: Kai Staenicke
From the director of B. A young man obsesses over his ex-lover as he takes us through a collage of memories, the highs and lows of their relationship and images of his ex-boyfriend’s new life with his new lover.

MOTHER KNOWS BEST (Sweden, 2016, 13 mins)
Director: Mikael Bundsen
Starring Alexander Gustavsson from Girls Lost. A mother gives her teenage son some friendly advice on their way home from having met his boyfriend for the first time, but this innocent conversation leads to revelations that threaten to completely change their relationship. Boys On Film 17: Love Is A Drug NSFW Trailer – The gay short film collection is getting sexy

As a bit of a pre-Christmas treat we’re getting a new intalment of the always excellent Boys On Film series of gay short films. The 17th collection, subtitled Love Is The Drug, is out in the UK on VoD on December 15th, and on DVD on December 27th.

Ahead of that, and to get us in the mood, a rather racy redband trailer has been released, which you can watch below. We’ve also got the details on the shorts that will feature on the release.

ALEX AND THE HANDYMAN

When Alex, a precious nine-year-old boy, develops a crush on Jared, the moody twenty-five-year-old handyman who works in the mansion where he lives, he will stop at nothing to get his attention.

MR SUGAR DADDY

Fifty-something Hans is looking for a fresh start. When he is pursued by the handsome younger Andrej, he falls for him fast. As the pair get closer, his wallet becomes looser. Is Andrej interested in Hans, or just the perks of an older man?

Boys on Film 16: Possession Trailer – The great gay short film collection is coming back

The most successful short film collection in the world is returning at the end of the month for its 16th selection of gay treats. As always there’s a great and eclectic selection of gay-themed shorts. You can find out more about what shorts are on the disc and watch the trailer below.

GOLDEN Dir. Kai Stänicke (Germany) 3 mins
As a golden boy becomes a golden man, his carefree spirit wanes under the weight of being different. As he grows up he becomes more introverted until, one day he discovers he’s not alone.

JAMIE Dir. Christopher Manning (UK) 9 mins
Shy, quiet Jamie, spends a revealing afternoon with Ben after meeting on a dating app. As they chat, Jamie finds himself opening up and letting loose his hopes and fears in an unexpected awakening.

When Ben summons up the courage to talk to Aaron at their local subway station he is surprised to find that Aaron is deaf. Despite the communication barrier love blossoms, but their very different worlds threaten to tear them apart.

Alex and Paolo have just hooked up in London. Despite only knowing each other briefly, Alex whisks Paolo away to his Aunt’s home in Nice. Alex believes it’s a holiday romance, but does Paulo feel the same?

Having taken us all around the world, Boys On Film returns to Britain for its 15th outing, Time & Tied. However, while sticking with one country, it doesn’t skimp on the quality, showing there’s a hell of a lot of good gay-themed short films being made in the UK.

Boys On Film 15 presents nine shorts which range from the award-winning Closets and the sexy, provocative G’Oclock, to time capsule of Polari that is Putting On The Dish, and a film many thought we’d never see, Trouser Bar.

The Boys On Film collection of gay-themed short films has proved far more successful than you would expect – after all, shorts on DVD have rarely found an audience. However, thanks to the quality of the films it’s now on its 13th instalment, but that doesn’t mean this one is unlucky. So what does it have in store amongst its 10 shorts? Teenager Jack’s mother wants to talk to him about something. It soon becomes clear there’s something pressing she wants to get off her chest, but she isn’t sure whether Jack will understand the evolution she’s going through – especially as he’s got something rather different he needs to reveal. Surprise is a sweet and simple film that captures the dynamic between a mother and teenage child who love each other but exist on slightly different wavelengths. The Boys On Film series is back with its 12th instalment, this time loosely themed around the idea of Confession.  Boys On Film is the most popular short film DVD anthology in the world, of any genre, and if you’ve watched them it’s clear why, as there’s a huge amount of incredibly good LGBT shorts out there, much of which would be hidden from the majority of people if it weren’t for discs like this.

This time the films range from one about a 17-year-old with a crush on the local priest to another focussing on a Hollywood hunk heading to his hometown with the hope of rekindling an old relationship. So what is the Boys On Film 12 short film selection like?

Boys On Film: Getting ‘Together’ With Actor Lucas Hansen

We’ve been having an interesting time interviewing the actors and directors involved in the new LGBT short film collection, Boys On Film 9: Youth In Trouble. We’ve chatted to Prora actors Tom Gramenz, The Wilding director Grant Scicluna and It’s Not A Cowboy Helmer Benjamin Parent.

Now we get to out final interview, with Together actor Lucas Hansen. He’s recognisable to horror fans from his role in The Human Centipede II and has also been seen on Psoro and the recent TV documentary, Murder on the Victorian Railway.

In Together, Hansen plays one half of a gay couple who’ve just moved in a new flat. When his partner goes missing, he thinks he’s just wandered off for a while, but the truth is far more disturbing.

We talks to Lucas about the film and whether he thinks we’re seeing a new breed of LGBT-themed movies. [Read more…]
