Insidious Chapter 2 Hits It Big At The US Box Office

September 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

insidious-chapter-2-poster1After a few low budget horror flops, news of the genre’s demise has been extremely premature, as Insidious Chapter 2 has scored the second highest September opening ever with $41 million, behind only last year’s Hotel Transylvania.

It’s three time more than the first movie took when it opened, suggesting the franchise has gained a lot of fans, and about on par with the same director’s The Conjuring, which opened in July.

The only other new entry in the top 10 was The Family, which took a decent but unspectacular $14.5 million. That said, it’s actually one of Robert De Niro’s best openings for years outside the Meet The Fockers franchise. However with mediocre word of mouth, it’s unlikely to do well over the coming weeks.

There was good news for The Butler, which passed the $100 million mark at the North American box office.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of September 13th-15th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Insidious Chapter 2 $41.0 $41.0
2 The Family $14.5 $14.5
3 Riddick $7.0 $31.2
4 Lee Daniels’ The Butler $5.5 $100.0
5 We’re The Millers $5.4 $131.6

The Butler Fights Off One Direction At The US Box Office

September 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

one-direction-this-is-us-posterWhile One Direction’s 3D documentary, This Is Us, topped the three-day weekend, when estimates for the Labor Day holiday were added in, The Butler held off the boy band onslaught to take the top spot on the US box office chart with $20 million.

This Is Us took the second spot with $18 million. That’s below the likes of Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson, but ahead of flops from Katy Perry and the Jonas Brothers. And seeing as it only cost $10 million to make it should be very profitable.

However the big story was the film at number 5, Instructions Not Included. Few mainstream film analysts had even heard of the movie, largely because it was only opening on 347 screens. However its 10 million four-day take ended up being the biggest opening ever for a Spanish-language movie. While movies for Hispanic audiences have been growing in popularity, this one blew all previous efforts out of the water.

The final new entry was the Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez movie Getaway, which just snuck into the top 10 with a less than impressive $5.5 million.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of August 30th to September 2nd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Lee Daniels’ The Butler $20.0 $79.2
2 One Direction: This Is Us $18.0 $18.0
3 We’re The Millers $15.9 $112.8
4 Planes $10.6 $73.7
5 Instructions Not Included $10.0 $10.0
6 Elysium $8.3 $80.4
7 The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones $6.8 $24.2
8 The World’s End $6.0 $17.5

The Butler Tops The US Box Office Again, Beating Mortal Instruments & The World’s End

August 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

butler-poster1Despite what many had thought would be some strong competition, in the end The Butler topped the US box office for a second week with $17 million, with We’re The Millers coming second once more with $13.5 million.

That was enough to beat newcomer The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, which despite suggestion early on its marketing that it was on track to be the new Twilight (and resulted in a sequel already being in the works), took $9.3 million over the weekend and $14 million since it opened last Wednesday. As young adult adaptations tend to be quite front loaded and then drop off, it doesn’t suggest this will become a hit in the long run (and certainly doesn’t bode well for the sequel).

The World’s End came in at number 4 on its US debut with $8.94 million. That’s more than either Hot Fuzz or Shaun Of The Dead, although those film got more limited releases. It’s not too bad though, especially as few expected it to do that brilliantly in America.

The horror film You’re Next took seventh spot on the chart with $7 million. It’s one of the weakest starts of the year for a nationwide horror release, but as it cost little to make, it’ll probably still end up turning a profit.

Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine expanded onto more screens in its fifth weekend at cinemas and made its first appearance in the top 10 with $4.3 million. It continues Allen’s run of decent earners after years when his movies barely made a cent.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for weekend of August 23rd-25th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Lee Daniels’ The Butler $17.0 $52.2
2 We’re The Millers $13.5 $91.7
3 The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones $9.3 $14.0
4 The World’s End $8.9 $8.9
5 Planes $8.5 $59.5
6 Elysium $7.1 $69.0
7 You’re Next $7.0 $7.0
8 Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters $5.2 $48.3
9 Blue Jasmine $4.3 $14.7
10 Kick-Ass 2 $4.2 $22.4

The Butler Tops The US Box Office, With Kick-Ass 2 Faltering

August 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

butler-poster1Going into the weekend, most box office watchers were predicting that Kick-Ass 2 would win the weekend, with Lee Daniels’ The Butler coming second. In the end The Butler did better than expected and took the top spot, with Kick-Ass 2 faltering and only managing fourth place on the chart.

The Butler took $25 million to take the top spot, about on par with The Help, which opened August 2011. It did a lot better than expected, with Hollywood once more underestimating the African American audience, who turned out in large numbers to support the civil rights themed movie. With good word of mouth building, some are saying it could end up taking $100 million.

Kick-Ass 2 ended up fourth with a comparatively dismal $13.5 million, about half what some had expected and six million below the first film’s opening weekend take. However the Kick-Ass only really became a hit on DVD, so the sequel will now have to hope it can do the same.

The only other new movie in the top 10 is Jobs, which took $6.7 million. It’s not a great start but about in line with expectations. It seems that mixed reviews didn’t help a movie that never managed to really sell why you should want to see a film about Steve Jobs.

At least it did better than Paranoia, as despite the presence of Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Liam Hemsworth, it only took $3.5 million for a 13th place finish. Many expect it to become the lowest grossing movie Ford’s ever starred in.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of August 16th-18th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Lee Daniels’ The Butler $25.0 $25.0
2 We’re The Millers $17,7 $69.5
3 Elysium $13.6 $55.9
4 Kick-Ass 2 $13.5 $13.5
5 Planes $13.1 $45.0
6 Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters $8.3 $38.9
7 Jobs $6.7 $6.7
8 2 Guns $5.5 $59.2
9 The Smurfs 2 $4.6 $56.9
10 The Wolverine $4.4 $120.4

Elysium Tops We’re The Millers & Planes At The US Box Office

August 12, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elysium-poster2After a couple of quiet weeks, there was a bit of a crush of new movies at the US box office this weekend, and heading into the weekend nobody was entirely certain which would end up on top. In the end it was the Matt Damon sci-fi Elysium, which took $30 million to top the chart. That’s a passable start, although not as much as the $35 million plus Sony had been hoping for.

We’re The Millers came in second with $26 million over the weekend and $38 million since it hit cinemas last Wednesday. Going into the weekend some thought the movie had a chance to come out on top, but it eased off on Saturday, although the Ed Helm and Jennifer Aniston movie still did pretty well.

After a very strong Friday, Disney’s Planes didn’t quite capitalise on that on Saturday and Sunday, ending up in third place with $22.5 million. Although it’s not a massive start compared to some other animated offerings, it only cost $50 million to make – significantly less than the $100 million plus most major CGI movies cost – so it’s still likely to turn a handsome profit.

Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters had less reason the cheer with a fourth place finish and a $14.6 million weekend, with the film taking $23 million since it opened last Wednesday. That’s significantly less than the $37 million the first movie opened with, and at the time even that was seen as a mediocre start. However the earlier movie did strong business outside the US, so Fox will be hoping for the same with the sequel.

Here’s the US box office top 10 for the weekend of August 9th-11th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Elysium $30.4 $30.4
2 We’re The Millers $26.5 $38.0
3 Planes $22.5 $22.5
4 Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters $14.6 $23.4
5 2 Guns $11.1 $48.5
6 The Smurfs 2 $9.5 $46.6
7 The Wolverine $8.0 $111.9
8 The Conjuring $6.7 $120.7
9 Despicable Me 2 $5.7 $338.3
10 Grown Ups 2 $3.7 $123.8

Extended Elysium Trailer – Fresh look at the Matt Damon sci-fi

July 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A new, longer trailer for Elysium has arrived, which gives us a great feel for the look and plot of Neill Blomkamps’s movie. It certainly look pretty cool, with great visuals and an interesting idea behind it.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.’

Neill Blomkamp’s film hits US cinemas on August 9th and the UK on August 26th. [Read more…]

New Elysium Clip – Matt Damon is becoming bionic

July 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Much of the promotion of Elysium has centred on Matt Damon wearing a strange suit of armour that allows him to do things he normally couldn’t. Now a new clip has emerged letting us see Damon’s character just after he’s got that armour, is getting used to have the tech attached to him.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Matt Damon Gets A Close-Up In A New Elysium Poster

July 23, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

elysium-poster2
I’m presuming they think Matt Damon will be a big draw for Elysium, or otherwise there’s not much point releasing a poster that’s essentially just a giant Damon face. It’s very nice, although doesn’t exactly give much info about the film.

New Elysium Trailer – Matt Damon is really pissed off with Jodie Foster

July 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Along with Wolverine and Pacific Rim, Elysium is one of the few big summer movies yet to hit cinemas, but it’s not too long now until it hits US cinemas on August 9th and the UK on August 26th. Now a fresh trailer had dropped, for you to get another taste of the film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Elysium Extended Trailer – Matt Damon goes up against Jodie Foster

June 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A new, longer trailer for Elysium has arrived, which gives us a better look at the plot than anything we’ve seen before. It certainly look pretty cool, with great visual and an interesting idea behind it, although as with many dystopian movies, it difficult to tell whether this vision of the future will feel real or contrived. There’s also a new poster, which you can see below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth.
