Help Fund Gay-Themed Documentary Memories Of A Penitent Heart

December 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

While a lot of people think their family history would make for a good documentary, in most cases they are horribly wrong. However it seems Cecilia Aldarondo might be right. She’s putting together a doc about her uncle, who died of AIDS in 1987. However it’s not just a case study of one of the millions of tragic AIDS related deaths, as her uncle ‘renounced’ his homosexuality on his death bed, after being begged to by his mother. And due to his family’s attitude towards homosexuality, his partner was frozen out of the grieving process.

It’s a sad and moving tale, and while Aldarondo has already started putting the film together, she needs more money to finish. She is currently seeking at least $20,000 on Kickstarter to fund the next phase of the production, and is crossing her fingers for $100,000 to completely finish the film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘It is April 1987. Miguel ‘Mickey’ Dieppa, a 31-year-old Puerto Rican with dreams of making it big on Broadway, is lying in a bed in New York Presbyterian Hospital. He may or may not be dying of AIDS—his symptoms are mysterious, and he’s never been tested.  His mother Carmen, a devout Catholic, begs him to repent of his homosexuality and receive Holy Communion. Miguel agrees, despite the fact that he wears a wedding ring acknowledging his commitment to his partner Robert. A few days later, he dies—it is Easter Sunday. Carmen is convinced it is a miracle. Not only has her son’s soul been spared, but he has also been resurrected alongside Jesus Christ.

‘In MEMORIES OF A PENITENT HEART, I investigate my uncle’s deathbed repentance. I chart Miguel’s illness and talk to his doctors. I reckon with my grandmother’s faith by digging up Carmen’s religious radio program and interviewing the priests and nuns who knew her best. Most importantly, I search for Miguel’s live-in partner Robert, in an attempt to hear his side of the story. Chasing the rumor mill, I travel across the US, trying to figure out what everyone lost in that hospital room back in 1987.’

The entire project is a massive challenge for the first time director, who doesn’t have a rolodex full of Hollywood insiders to ask for help. She does have a potentially fascinating story though and has partnered with a few film professionals to get to the point she’s reached so far. Now she’s hoping to take the next step by getting more funding. The plan is then to film more interviews, editing the film and put it through post-production, getting the movie into festivals during autumn of 2013.

You can find out more about the movie by watching the videos above and below, as well as visiting the film’s Kickstarter page.

First Pic Of Daniel Radcliffe & Dane Dehaan In Kill Your Darlings

December 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kill-your-darlings-daniel-radcliffe-dane-dehaanA few months ago we got a few set pics of Daniel Radcliffe playing gay poet Allen Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings. Now we’ve got the first official pic, showing Radcliffe along Dane DeHaan, Jack Huston and Ben Foster (at least we think that’s who is on the left).

The movies charts how a murder helped shape the lives of a group of young men who went on to become the beat generation. Chronicle star DeHaan plays Lucien Carr, the man who introduced Howl writer Allen Ginsberg to the likes of William S. Burroughs (Foster) and Jack Kerouac (Huston). Indeed, Ginsberg said that “Lou was the glue” that brought the beat poets and writers together.

During these early, hedonistic days, a man called David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall) fell for Carr, with his infatuation becoming increasingly obsessive and unhinged – Ginsberg once discovered Kammerer trying to murder Jack Kerouac’s cat. It eventually resulted in Carr stabbing Kammerer to death him and going to prison for his murder. The violent event is said to have indelibly changed all the people involved and etched its way into the published works of the Beat writers.

Although Carr said the killing took place after he rejected Kammerer’s sexual advances and was assaulted as a result, many have suggested that Lucien wasn’t as heterosexual as he made out, and that he and Ginsberg had been lovers (something the earlier set pics suggest will also include). The full truth of what happened may never be known. Whatever happened, it was a pivotal moment for Ginsberg, who had been exceptionally close to Carr whether they’d been lovers or not.

The film premieres in January at Sundance and should hit cinemas in 2013.

Eddie Redmayne Joins Channing Tatum In The Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending

December 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

eddie-redmayneCloud Atlas may not have been the critical and commercial success the Wachowskis (and co-director Tom Twyker) had hoped, but they’re now planning a return to the sci-fi arena with Jupiter Ascending. They’ve already got Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis attached to star, and now Variety reports that Les Miserables star Eddie Redmayne is in talks to join him.

The movie is set in a future where humans are considered the lowest form of life in the galaxy. Tatum is set to star as an intergalactic bounty hunter who is sent by the Queen of the Universe to kill an human woman (Kunis) whose genetic detailss are identical to the Queen’s. And as this is the movies, the would-be assassin begins to fall in love with the person he’s supposed to kill.

It’s not been revealed how Eddie Redmayne fits into all this. Andy and Lana Wachowski will direct from their own screenplay, with production scheduled to begin early next year.

HBO Picks Up Gay Comedy From Brothers And Sisters Creator

December 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

luke-mcfarlaneHBO was at the forefront of putting gay-themed entertainment on TV with the likes of Six Feet Under, but while it’s produced several gay movies in the last few years, it’s been a bit quieter for LGBT audiences with its original series.

However that may now be changing, as THR reports reports the pay-network has ordered a pilot for a series about three gay friends living in San Francisco, which comes from Brothers & Sister creator David Marshall Grant and Bored to Death’s Sarah Condon.

The pilot is based on a film script by Michael Lannan, adapted from his own short, Lorimer, which has now been turned into a series. It follows ‘three friends in San Francisco who explore the fun and sometimes overwhelming options available to a new generation of gay men’.

No cast has been announced yet, but you’d hope there’s a role for Brothers & Sister’s Luke McFarlane (pictures), who played Kevin’s boyfriend, Scotty, in the ABC series.

We can probably expect a fairly grounded approach to this comedy, as they’ve drafted in Weekend director Andrew Haigh to helm the pilot. There’s no guarantee it will ever become a full series, but the fact a pilot has been ordered is a good sign.

Ian McKellen Talks Coming Out And Living During A Time When Gay Sex Was Illegal

December 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For younger gay people, it’s often difficult to believe that only a decade or two before we were born, gay sex wasn’t just shunned by society, it was illegal, and therefore that’s the background against which many older gay people grew up. Sir Ian McKellen has been talking about that fact with Anderson Cooper, saying, “I was making love until I was about 30 with my live-in boyfriend and we were breaking the law every time we had sex. Breaking the law. We could have been arrested. I had friends who were put in prison for it.”

The Hobbit actor backed up recent statement he’s made about revealing his sexuality publicly, saying, “I’ve never met a gay person who’s regretted coming out.”

McKellen mentions the importance of people coming out and the effect that can have for the gay rights fight in terms of changing hearts and minds. It’s well worth a look, so watch the video above.

I’m So Excited Teaser – First look at Pedro Almodovar’s rather camp new movie

December 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pedro Almodovar is back with I’m So Excited. He recently said his new movie is more of a simple fun comedy flick than some of his more recent films, and that certainly seem true from this very camp teaser, which feels three male flight attendants lip-syncing to the Pointer Sisters’ song I’m So Excited during a flight.

The film features Javier Camara, Cecilia Roth, Lola Duenas, Raul Arevalo, Carlos Areces, Antonio de la Torre, Hugo Silva, and apparently has ‘special collaborations’ with Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Paz Vega, although we’re not quite sure what that means.

Almodovar’s comedy is due to hit cinemas next year.

Adults Only Trailer – Into the world of the gay porn arcades

December 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Saul’s 2010 short film, Go Go Reject, was a lot of silly fun, but he’s going in a more seedy and serious direction with his new film, Adults Only. Saul reteams with the lead actor and writer of Go Go Reject, Heath Daniels, for the new short, which is currently in post-production.

The film takes us into the world of gay porn arcades and has even inspired an exhibition that starts January 18 at Los Angeles’ Antebellum Gallery and features photos, videos and arcade booths with strategically placed peepholes.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Michael is haunted by recurring memories of a lost love. Like an old black and white film on an endless loop, scenes from the past make sleep impossible.

‘He spends his days riding the subway, walking the streets, unable to relate to anyone.
Walking home one late night, Michael observes two men hurriedly leaving an adult porn arcade. He quietly follows them to a secluded alley where they begin to have passionate sex. Michael watches from the shadows and photographs them, unable to take his eyes off their primal connection.

‘The following night, he returns and enters the arcade. Pushing through the curtain, he is ushered into a fluorescent maze of hallways leading to private booths. Cracked doors and skillfully placed peepholes offer a voyeuristic view of intense and intimate exchanges.

‘Michael thinks he is only there to watch. But his view of reality is shaken when he unexpectedly meets an intense and handsome stranger, Nick and finds himself in an intimate exchange of his own.’

From the trailer above, it certainly look intriguing and rather sexy.

Gayby Director Jonathan Lisecki To Star In Big Gay Love

December 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

big-gay-love
Jonathan Lisecki got lots of buzz this year for writing and directing Gayby, but now he’s planning to further his acting career by taking the lead role in a new rom-com, Big Gay Love.

It won’t be Lisecki’s first acting job, as he took a role in Gayby and has also been seen in Wuss and The Limbo Room, although as he comments to Queerty, “People like me don’t usually get to play the lead in a romantic comedy.”

The film is ‘a comedy about a portly gay man, Bob, who overcomes discrimination based on his looks to find love on his own terms’. In this case Bob is a chef who has feelings for his boss, played by Buffy’s Nicholas Brendon. However he has to get past his own body-image issues as well as the way others look at him.

The movie is already shooting with Ringo Le (Saigon Love Story) writing and directing. The hope it’ll be ready for next summer’s film festival.

You can follow the film over on Facebook.

Matt Damon Says Michael Douglas Is A Wonderful Kisser

December 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

behind-the-candelabra-pic1
One of the more intriguing gay-themed films arriving in 2013 is Behind The Candelabra, Steven Soderbergh’s HBO movie starring Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as the showman’s younger lover, Scott Thorson.

Although Damon as played gay before, in The Talented Mr Ripley (and pretended to be gay in an episode of Will & Grace), this is the first time he’s actually had to get physical with another guy. Now he’s been talking about that with Playboy, saying “Michael was a wonderful kisser.”

The snogging took a bit of planning though, with Damon saying, “I had to come out of the pool, go over to Michael Douglas, straddle him on a chaise lounge and start kissing him… It’s not like I kiss him just once. We drew it up like a football plan.”

So how did he prepare for it? “I remember asking Heath Ledger after Brokeback Mountain, ‘How’d you do that scene with Jake?’ – meaning the scene where they start ferociously kissing. He said, ‘Well, mate, I drank a half case of beer in my trailer.’ I started laughing, and he goes, ‘No, I’m serious. I needed to just go for it. If you can’t do that, you’re not making the movie.'”

It’s a film he sounds proud of though, saying, “These two men were deeply in love and in a real relationship – a marriage – long before there was gay marriage. That’s not an insignificant thing. The script is beautiful and relatable. Their conversations when they’re dressing or undressing or having a spat or getting ready for bed? That’s every marriage. It feels like you’re witnessing something really intimate you would normally see with a man and a woman, but instead it’s two men, which was thrilling.”

And if you’re a Damon fan, you’ll be pleased to know he’s promising more flesh than we usually get to see in his movies. “Normally I’d say no to nudity,” he says, “but I just did a lot of it playing the long-term partner of Liberace. I mean, it’s tastefully done… But this movie’s not going to be for everyone.”

Some of you may be wishing it wasn’t done tastefully, but it’s nice to know the film isn’t going to be coy.

As for old rumours that stirred early in his career that he and Be Affleck were gay, Matt Says, “I never denied those rumors because I was offended and didn’t want to offend my friends who were gay—as if being gay were some kind of fucking disease. It put me in a weird position in that sense. The whole thing was just gross. But look, there have been great signs of progress—the fact that Anderson Cooper and Ellen DeGeneres can come out so beautifully and powerfully, and it’s a big fucking deal that it turns out nobody gives a shit. If Liberace were alive today, everybody would love his music and nobody would care what he did in his private life. Like with Elton John.”

Behind The Candelabra will arrive sometime during 2013.

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Any Day Now hits US cinemas tomorrow (December 14th), so we thought it was the perfect time to bring you the trailer for this gay themed movie, which is based on a true story.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Winner of 10 Audience Awards at film festivals around the country and starring the amazing Alan Cumming, ANY DAY NOW is a powerful tale of love, acceptance and family. When a teenager with Down syndrome (Isaac Leyva) is abandoned by his mother, a gay couple (Alan Cumming and Garret Dillahunt) takes him in and becomes the loving family he’s never had. But when their unconventional living arrangement is discovered by authorities, the men are forced to fight a biased legal system to save the life of the child they have come to love as their own.
