Steve Martin Is Going To Magic Camp With Disney

August 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Steve-MartinSteve Martin’s career started with Disney working at Disneyland in the 1950s, and the company has been a recurring theme throughout his career backing movies such as Father Of The Bride and Bringing Down The House.

Now Martin and Disney are reteaming for the comedy Magic Camp, according to THR. It really does take him back to his roots, as his Disneyland job included working at the Main Street Magic Shop, demonstrating tricks to potential customers.

In Magic Camp, Martin will play ‘a straight-laced banker who returns to Magic Camp, a camp he attended as a shy child. This time he is a counselor who makes it his mission to improve the lives of all the kids while keeping an eye on his ultimate prize, the top spot at the Golden Wand competition’.

Steve Martin wrote the most recent version of the screenplay alongside Stu Zicherman. No director is currently attached.

Legendary Actor & Director Richard Attenborough Dies Aged 90

August 25, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

richard-attenboroughRichard Attenborough, the famed actor and director has passed away aged 90, it’s been revealed. His film career started in the early 1940s, and indeed even when he signed up to serve in the RAF in World War II he was soon seconded to the film unit, to help make British propaganda movies.

His biggest early breakthrough came in 1947, playing Pinkie Brown in the film version of Graham Greene’s Brighton Rock, recreating a role he’d played on the stage on 1942. He was a popular British star through the 50s, 60s and 70s, starring in the likes of Private’s Progress (1956) and I’m All Right Jack (1959), The Great Escape (1963), The Flight Of The Phoenix (1965) and 10 Rillington Place (1971).

However in 1979 he decided to put acting to one side and concentrate on directing. He’d already had some success with the likes of Oh! What A Lovely War! (1969), A Bridge Too Far (1977) and Magic (1978), but it was his next movie that moved him to a new level, with Attenborough moving heaven and earth to get Gandhi (1982) made. The resulting film won eight Oscars, including a Best Director gong for David.

He later directed the likes of A Chorus Line, Cry Freedom, Chaplin and Shadowlands.

In the 1990s he became known to a new, younger generation when he agreed to return to the screen to play John Hammond in 1993’s Jurassic Park. It must have given him the bug, as through the 1990s and early 2000s he had several other on-screen appearances in the likes of The Miracle On 34th Street and Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet.

Sadly though he’d been in declining health for several years and sadly died on Sunday.

White Bird In A Blizzard Trailer – Gregg Araki directs Shailene Woodley in a new drama

August 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

white-bird-in-a-blizzard-posterThanks to Divergent and Fault In Our Stars, Shailene Woodley’s star has risen massively in the last few months. Now we get to take a look at another of her upcoming film, Gregg Araki’s White Bird In A Blizzard.

The film is based on Laura Kasischke’s 1999 novel about a young woman who loses control of her life when her mother disappears. Woodley plays the main role, with the likes of Eva Green (as the mother), Angela Bassett, Shiloh Fernandez, Christopher Meloni and Gabourey Sidibe co-starring.

Gregg Araki was at the forefront of the Queer Cinema movement of the 1990s, and indeed all his movies since then have had an LGBT tint. However things will be less overtly gay with his latest movie.

The movie debuted at Sundance to pretty good notices, and will his US cinemas next month. There’s no UK date set yet though. [Read more…]

New Nightcrawler Trailer – Morality gets murky as Jake Gyllenhaal looks at nighttime crime

August 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nightcrawler-posterNightcrawler looks like it could be an interesting movie, even if we’re still not sure why Jake Gyllenhaal decided the skinny look was the way to go to star in it. Now a new trailer has arrived, which gives us our best look yet at the intriguing film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Lou Bloom, an ambitious young man desperate for work, discovers the world of L.A. crime journalism. When Lou learns of a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles his way into the dangerous realm of night crawling, where a police siren wail means a possible windfall, and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Nina, a local TV news veteran, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant.’

Dan Gilroy write and directs, with a Toronto Film Festival premiere planned before an October 17th US release. [Read more…]

August 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

annabelle-posterWhile many still aren’t sure whether the creepy doll from The Conjuring needs her own movie, she’s getting one anyway. We had the first trailer not too long ago, and now another, slightly longer one has arrived, which you can watch below.

The movie is set before The Conjuring and it look like it will be an origin story, letting us know how the doll became the object of evil that caused so much trouble in the case Ed and Lorraine Warren investigated, where it was being manipulated by a demon.

Annabelle Wallis, Alfre Woodard, Ward Horton, Tony Amendola, Eric Ladin, and Brian Howe star in the film, with Gary Dauberman directing. A pre-Halloween release is planned. [Read more…]

Iron Man 3’s Shane Black To Direct The Destroyer

August 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

shane-blackIron Man 3 turned Shane Black into one of the hottest directors in Hollywood, but even so we haven’t had another movie from him since, despite him developing various properties, most notably a film about pulp hero Doc Savage.

However now Sony has announced that Shane Black is set to take on a movie version of the popular adventure book series, The Destroyer, by Warren Murphy. Fight Club screenwriter Jim Uhls is onboard to write the script alongside James Mullaney. The latter has plenty of experience with the property, as while Warren Murphy may have started things off, Mullaney co-authored and became the sole writer of The Destroyer. Indeed the book series continues to this day, with the 151st title due out in October.

The Destroyer is based on the series of paperback novels in which Newark cop Remo Williams is framed, sentenced to death, then resurrected following a botched execution. He is brought back to serve as the enforcement arm for CURE, a top-secret, extra-Constitutional arm of the US government. Along with a seemingly ageless Asian assassin known only as Chiun, Williams sets out to clean up and take out those who oppose America’s interests. The stories combine suspense with Eastern mysticism to produce rapid-fire capers full of slick banter, social satire, and sudden violence.

It’s not clear when it will go into production, although with reports suggesting Doc Savage is nearly ready to go, it will probably come after that movie.

David Gordon Green Directing Our Brand Is Crisis With Sandra Bullock Set To Star

August 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

David-Gordon-GreenBack in December it was reported that Sandra Bullock was in talks for the George Clooney produced movie Our Brand Is Crisis. Now she’s officially committed to it and the film has a director, David Gordon Green, according to Variety.

Bullock apparently couldn’t fully decide whether to star, but was convinced after meeting Pineapple Express and All The Real Girls director David Gordon Green, based on the strength of his vision.

The political comedy is based on Rachel Boynton’s 2005 documentary, which focused on the use of American political campaign strategies in Bolivia by President Clinton’s former consultants James Carville and Stan Greenberg.

Peter Straughan wrote the screenplay, although it’s not clear when it will shoot.

David Yates May Return To The Harry Potter World For Fantastic Beasts

August 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

david-yatesEver since Warner Bros. announced that JK Rowling had agreed to script a film set in the world of Harry Potter – Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – there’s been speculation about who would direct the first in this planned franchise.

Now it seems it’s be a familiar face, as Variety reports that David Yates is in talks to helm the movie. He is of course the man who helmed the last four Potter movies. Since Deathly Hallows was released, he’s circled many movies, and while his take on Tarzan is now in production, he’s had a surprising amount of difficulty getting projects off the ground, so perhaps a return to the Potter world isn’t too surprising.

The film will follow the adventures of the Newt Scamander, 70 years before the Harry Potter first arrives at Hogwarts, as he discovers the terrible beasties that feature in the textbook that Harry has to use during his time at school. The spin-off will introduce a new set of characters and creatures, although set in a Wizarding universe that will be familiar to HP fans.

Warner Bros. has set a November 18th, 2016 release date.

New Annie Trailer – Will the sun be coming out tomorrow for Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhane Wallis?

August 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

annie-trailer-slideWhile Annie is a well-loved musical, there are only two songs from it that most people know, and that’s something the new trailer for the 2014 version seems well aware of, ensuring we get plenty of It’s A Hard Knock Life and Tomorrow.

It’s also keen to show us that things have been updated to the modern day and the whole thing should be a little funkier (and with Will Smith and Jay-Z both involved with updating the score, that shouldn’t be too much of a surprise).

The plot also remains the same though, with orphan Annie (Quvenzhane Wallis) having a hard-luck life in the foul orphanage run by Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). She’s then taken in by the filthy rich Benjamin Stacks (Jamie Foxx). In this version he’s running for office and initially just wants Annie so the press will see him being nice to an orphan, but he soon falls for the plucky youngster’s charms. But then Annie’s real parents are found, or are they?

Will Gluck is directing from his own screenplay, which was originally written by Aline Brosh McKenna and Emma Thompson. Annie is currently set for release December 25th, 2014. [Read more…]
