Fatal Attraction Helmer Adrian Lyne Heads Into Deep Water

April 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

adrian-lyneAdrian Lyne made his name with the likes of Flashdance, Fatal Attraction and Jacob’s Ladder, but he hasn’t made a movie since Unfaithful in 2002. However now he’s heading back to the set as he has signed up to direct the Patricia Highsmith adaptation, Deep Water.

The book is about a young married couple, whose lives are altered when their acquaintances begin turning up dead. While no actors have been attached at this time, Deadline reports that conversations are under way with a ‘big star’ to take one of the lead roles. Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction) wrote the screenplay adaptation, with financing the project.

It may not end up as Lyne’s first film back as director, as he’s also attached to the John Grisham adaptation The Associate and a family drama called Back Roads.

Pain And Gain Tops The US Box Office, With Iron Man 3 Taking A Gargantuan Haul Internationally

April 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pain-and-gain-poster3Michael Bay has proved he can still pull in the punters away from massive robots, as his Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg starrer, Pain And Gain, topped the US box office with $20 million in its first weekend. Although that’s a lot less than Bay’s Transformers movies opened to, that’s only to be expected from an R-rated thriller with a dash of comedy. And as it only cost $26 million to make, it’s likely headed for a healthy profit.

There was less cheer for The Big Wedding, which opened to a rather meagre $7.5 million, despite a cast including Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Robin Williams and Amanda Seyfried. While Hollywood still seems to think wedding comedies are a surefire winner, Big Wedding has followed a trend of diminishing returns for this seemingly never-ending subgenre.

Those were the only new movies in the top 10, as the Matthew McConaughey drama Mud landed at number 11 on its opening in limited release. However the really big news took place outside the US, where the international opening of Iron Man 3 took a truly massive $195 million.

The film opened in 79% of territories outside North America, and if Disney had any worries about the poster-Avengers Marvel world, they’ll have been laid to rest. $195 million is $10 million ahead of what Avengers took in those territories in its first three days. It had the biggest opening ever in Argentina, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore It’s one of the biggest international opening ever and certainly suggests the film is going to be one of this year’s biggest hitters

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of April 26th-28th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Pain And Gain $20.0 $20.0
2 Oblivion $17.4 $64.7
3 42 $10.7 $69.0
4 The Big Wedding $7.5 $7.5
5 The Croods $6.6 $163.0
6 GI Joe: Retaliation $3.6 $116.3
7 Scary Movie 5 $3.4 $27.4
8 Olympus Has Fallen $2.7 $93.0

Prince Avalanche is the English-language adaptation the Icelandic comedy Either Way. It premiered at Sundance and recently screened at Tribeca, and now we get our first look with a trailer, featuring Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘An odd couple of sorts, meditative and stern Alvin (Rudd) and his girlfriend’s brother, Lance (Hirsch), dopey and insecure, leave the city behind to spend the summer in solitude repainting traffic lines down the centre of a country highway ravaged by wildfire. As they sink into their job in the remarkable landscape, they learn more than they want to about each other and their own limitations. An unlikely friendship develops through humour and nasty exchanges, leading to surprising affection.’

David Gordon Green directs, getting back to his indie roots after the likes of Pineapple Express, Your Highness and The Sitter. It’ll be released in the US in August, but no UK date has been set yet.

New Red 2 Trailer – Plus Mary-Louise Parker gets a character poster

April 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Red was a surprise success in 2010, attracting an older audience to an action film than would normally go to the multitude of young guy oriented flicks we get each year. Now a sequel is on its way and a new trailer is here, as well as a character poster featuring Mary-Louise Parker.

The likes of Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich are back, this time joined by the likes of Catherine Zeta-Jones, Anthony Hopkins and David Thewlis.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In RED 2, the high-octane action-comedy sequel to the worldwide sleeper hit, retired black-ops CIA agent Frank Moses reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device. To succeed, they’ll need to survive an army of relentless assassins, ruthless terrorists and power-crazed government officials, all eager to get their hands on the next-generation weapon. The mission takes Frank and his motley crew to Paris, London and Moscow. Outgunned and outmanned, they have only their cunning wits, their old-school skills, and each other to rely on as they try to save the world-and stay alive in the process.’

Johnny Depp Heads Into the Woods With Meryl Streep In Sondheim’s Musical

April 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Johnny-DeppRob Marshall has been working on a film version of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into The Woods, with Meryl Streep attached to star (although a final deal still hasn’t been reached). Now another big name is circling the project, as Johnny Depp is in talks to join Disney’s adaptation, according to Variety.

The project is based on Sondheim’s musical, with a book by James Lapine, which follows a baker and his wife who try to break a curse placed upon them, which prevents them from having children. Along the way, they encounter fairy tale characters such as Rapunzel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and many more.

Rob Marshall is directing from a screenplay by Lapine. David Krane is working on the music for the adaptation, with John DeLuca producing. The current plan is to shoot in 2014, with Depp starring after he shoots Transcendence and Black Mass back-to-back.

More posters have come online, including a couple more character pics for Red 2 (following Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and Catherine Zeta-Jones), featuring newcomers to the action franchise, Anthony Hopkins and Byung Hun Lee. You can take a look at them below.

We’ve also got a new poster for Pacific Rim, letting us know we need to Go Big Or Go Extinct in this film, which sees humanity responding to monsters rising from a portal in the Pacific, by building enormous human-operated robots to battle them.

Along with the new promo pic, there’s also three recruitment posters, which want us to join the PPDC – Pan Pacific Defense Corps, which fights the monsters – aka Kaiju. And if you fancy seeing if you’ve got what it takes to join, you can sign up at http://www.panpacificdefense.com/

Colin Firth, Emily Blunt & Adam Sandler Will Have A Murder Mystery

April 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colin-firthFor a while John Madden has been plotting Murder Mystery as his follow-up to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, with Charlize Theron attached to star. Now the cast has grown significantly, with THR reporting that Colin Firth, Adam Sandler, and Emily Blunt have also signed up to appear in the movie.

James Vanderbilt’s script is about a pair of American newlyweds visiting Europe on their honeymoon who get implicated in a murder they witnessed. There’s no news on exactly who any of the cast members will play, although Sandler and Theron will presumably be the American couple.

The film will shoot in Germany later this year.

Scarlett Johansson Will Be The Ass-Kicking Lucy For Luc Besson

April 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Scarlett Johansson at The Avengers LA PremiereScarlett Johansson must have liked kicking-ass in The Avengers, as she’s going to do it again for Luc Besson in Lucy, according to THR, which says she’s in final talks to star in the movie.

Besson wrote the script for Lucy, which is about a woman who is forced to become a drug mule. However, things go wrong when the drugs start to leak into her body, transforming her into an ass-kicking machine. Miraculously she can absorb knowledge instantaneously, is able to move objects with her mind and can’t feel pain and other discomforts.

So it’s kind of a superhero movie, but a very unusual one.

There’s no news on when it might shoot, but Besson will presumably want to start on it soon after he’s finished Malavita, which stasr Robert De Niro as a crime boss who is relocated to Normandy as part of the witness protection program, but finds it difficult to let go of his old profession

James Franco May Become A Queen Of The Desert

April 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

james-francoJude Law seems to be making leaving movies he was attached to a bit of a theme at the moment, as he joined and left Jane Got A Gun within a week last month, and now he’s left behind Werner Herzog’s upcoming Gertrude Bell biopic Queen of the Desert, according to Deadline. Herzog may have already found a replacement though in the form of James Franco.

The true story film stars Naomi Watts as Gertrude Bell, an explorer, writer, archaeologist and attaché for the British Empire, who is credited with helping to catalyse the formation of the Middle East at the dawn of the 20th Century. She’s been described as the female Lawrence of Arabia, although the film will also include the real T.E. Lawrence, played by Robert Pattinson. There’s no news on exactly what the role Franco is up for will be.

Law dropped out a few months ago so that he could do the play Henry V, which caused Queen Of The Desert to come to a halt, but getting Franco onboard will hopefully start it back up again.

Gangster Squad’s Ruben Fleischer Takes On Secret Sci-Fi Project

April 26, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ruben-fleischerThere was a huge amount of anticipation for Gangster Squad, with early buzz suggesting it was going to be huge. However the film itself underwhelmed and wasn’t the break into the top rung of directors that Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, 30 Minutes Of Less) was hoping.

However now he’s planning his next movie over at Sony Pictures, according to TheWrap, although no details about it have been released, other than that it’s a sci-fi/fantasy flick. Fleischer pitched to Sony by Fleischer, and the studio has since hired emerging screenwriter Eric Pearson to write the script.

It’s a bit of a homecoming for the director, as while he made Gangster Squad for Warner Bros, both Zombieland and 30 Minutes Or Less were backed by Sony. He’s also still working with Warners, as he currently attached to helm an adaptation of SpyHunter for them.
