Joe Wright Finds The Ocean At The End Of The Lane

March 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

joe-wrightThere’s always a lot of interest in taking Neil Gaiman’s books to the big screen, but only a few, such as Coraline and Stardust, have actually made it into cinemas. However it seems Joe Wright (Atonement, Anna Karenina) wants to have a go adapting the fantasy novelist’s work, as Deadline reports that Focus Features has snapped up the rights to Gaiman’s The Ocean At The End Of The Lane for Wright to direct.

The book doesn’t reach shop shelves until this summer, but ‘it’s about about memory and magic and survival, about the power of stories and the darkness inside each of us. The narrator describes a tale that begins when he was seven and a lodger stole the family’s car and committed suicide in it, stirring up ancient powers best left undisturbed. Creatures from beyond the world are on the loose, and it will take everything our narrator has just to stay alive: there is primal horror here, and a menace unleashed – within his family, and from the forces that have gathered to destroy it. His only defense is three women, on a ramshackle farm at the end of the lane. The youngest of them claims that her duckpond is an ocean. The oldest can remember the Big Bang.’

Hopefully it’ll have an easier ride to the screen than the various attempts to make American Gods, Sandman, and The Graveyard Book over the years.

Emma Watson In Early Talks For Disney’s Live-Action Cinderella

March 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Emma-WatsonEmma Watson has been pretty smart about her post-Harry Potter life, initially taking supporting roles in the likes of My Week With Marilyn and The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. It’s allowed her to show her talents outside Hogwarts without the pressure of having the whole movie resting on her back.

However she may now be diving back into the world of mega-budget moviemaking, but this time in the title role, as Variety reports she’s in very early talks for Disney’s live-action Cinderella, which Kenneth Branagh is set to direct.

It was recently reported that Saoirse Ronan, Alicia Vikander (The Seventh Son), and Gabriella Wilde (Carrie) were trying out for the lead role, but it seems Disney is erring towards Watson. Cate Blanchett is already set to play the wicked queen.

Aline Bosh McKenna’s wrote the script, which was recently rewritten by Chris Weitz. No specific story details have been released as to whether this take departs from the classic story, although the studio hopes to make a big-budget, live-action spectacle in the same vein as Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

Tina Fey Says This Is Where I Leave You Opposite Jason Bateman

March 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tina-feyWith 30 Rock coming to an end, Tina Fey has a lot more time on her hands, and so she’s been busy working her way through scripts to find the ones she wants to make. She’s currently shooting The Muppets… Again, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t also looking to the future, as THR reports that she’s now in talks to join Jason Bateman in This Is Where I Leave You.

The film is an adaptation of the Jonathan Tropper comic novel about four siblings who come home to sit ‘shiva’ for their deceased father. They are trapped in the house for seven days, and all their skeletons are laid bare. While Zac Efron, Goldie Hawn and Leslie Mann were previously attached, it doesn’t seem they’re involved anymore, with Kathryn Hahn likely to be Bateman’s sister-in-law, while Ari Graynor, Isla Fisher, Zoe Saldana and Mary Elizabeth Winstead have all read for roles.

Shawn Levy – who directed Fey in Date Night – recently signed up to direct the movie, although it’s not 100% clear when it might shoot.

Dylan Baker & Meagan Good Join Anchorman: The Legend Continues

March 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dylan-BakerWith shooting kicking off on Anchorman: The Legend Continues, the cast continues to grow, with Dylan Baker and Meagan Good signing on to join the comedy ensemble for this much-anticipated sequel, according to Deadline.

Meagan Good, who currently stars in the TV drama Deception, will play the new boss of the Action 4 News team, which consists of Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), Champ Kind (David Koechner), and Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd). No details have been release about Dylan Baker’s character. Christina Applegate, James Marsden, and Kristen Wiig also star.

Yesterday we reported that John C. Reilly may have signed on to the movie, based on casting notice that was asking for Reilly look-alikes. However, a studio representative shot down the rumor with the odd explanation,
“We were looking for a stand-in for lighting purposes who looks like John C. Reilly. We always demand that every stand-in looks like John C. Reilly.” He may well still be in the movie, but it seems they don’t want to announce if officially yet.

The film will follow the Action 4 News team in the late 1970s, as they deal with the sweeping changes in broadcast news brought on by the advent of the 24-hour news cycle.

Paul Bettany Finds Transcendence Opposite Johnny Depp

March 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

paul-bettanyWhile Johnny Depp has been attached to Transcendence for quite a while, he’s only now getting his first castmate – probably because it’s only in the last few days that Depp has confirmed that he will indeed star in the movie and plans to make it one of his next projects.

Now Deadline reports that Paul Bettany is in negotiations to star in the movie, which will be Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister’s directorial debut. As Wally is the man behind the camera on the likes of Inception and The Dark Knight movies, it’s sure to look great.

The screenplay, written by Jack Paglen, is still wrapped in secrecy (Pfister has obviously been taking a few tips from Chris Nolan about not telling anyone anything). However, it’s rumored that the film is about a group of scientists experimenting with the idea of the technological singularity – the moment where a computer becomes so advanced that it begins to learn on its own and no longer needs an operator. The secrecy also means we have no idea who Bettany might play.

The plan is to shoot the film this April.

March 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mikael-HafstromEven before Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams’ novel Tunnels was published, Hollywood had snapped up the rights and was planning a film version. However it’s taken a lot longer than originally envisioned to get it ready. Tom Shadyac Eyes Untouchable Remake, With Colin Firth Circling

March 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

untouchable-slideLast year Untouchable (aka The Intouchables) became the highest grossing French movie in history, taking over $400 million around the world. It’s little wonder then that Hollywood is interested in a remake. Now Deadline reports that a perhaps surprising name is attached to direct, Tom Shadyac – best known for broad comedy hits Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty, The Nutty Professor and Ace Ventura.

Colin Firth is said to be circling a lead role, but nothing has been set in stone yet. Back in November, it was reported that Silver Linings Playbook star Chris Tucker had showed interest in the movie, but it’s not known if he’s still involved.

Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) is writing the screenplay, which follows an a very rich man who gets paralysed after a hang-gliding accident. He hires a young man with a criminal background to take care of him, forming a unique bond of friendship. The original film was one of the Best Foreign Language Film nominees at the Oscars last weekend.

Shadyac may actually be a better choice than his resume suggest, as he himself nearly died in a cycling accident. Afterwards he left the business altogether, dedicating his life to more altruistic endeavours. If he does end up making the film, it will be his first narrative feature since 2007’s Evan Almighty.

March 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gary-oldmanWith Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes aiming to start shooting fairly soon, they’re leaving the casting fairly late. Jason Clarke and Kodi Smit-McPhee have already signed up, and now ComingSoon reports that Gary Oldman has joined the cast for director Matt Reeves.

Oldman will apparently portray Dreyfus, who is the leader of the human resistance that springs up after the apes rise to power. The story is set 15 years after Rise of the Planet of the Apes, centering on a group of San Francisco scientists trying to survive in this new world overrun by the apes. The plot also follows the story of on Caesar (Andy Serkis), who is trying to maintain control over his new animalian kingdom.

The Conjuring is another one of those creepy paranormal tales that’s supposedly based on a true story, although quite how true it is, is highly debatable. Now we get out first chance to judge its veracity with a slightly creepy trailer (along with the new poster above).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville. Based on a true story, “The Conjuring” tells the horrifying tale of how renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to help a family terrorised by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.’

Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor and Joey King star. A July 19th UK & US release date is set.
