Geoffrey Rush & Emily Watson Take On The Book Thief

February 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

geoffrey-rushMarcus Zusak’s novel The Book Thief received huge plaudits when it was released eight years ago, but it’s taken until now for a movie version to gear up, with Downton Abbey director Brian Percival at the helm.

Now the cast has come together, with THR reporting that Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson are both set to star, with Ben Schnetzer (Happy Town) and Nico Liersch also in the cast and French-Canadian actress Sophie Nelisse playing the title character.

The Book Thief ‘centers on Liesel (Nelisse), a spirited young girl who witnesses the horrors of Nazi Germany while in the care of foster parents (Rush and Watson). The girl arrives with a stolen book and begins collecting other tomes, learning to read while her stepparents harbor a Jewish refugee (Schnetzer) under the stairs.

‘Rush’s character first takes on the young girl for money but soon comes to love her. Watson’s character is described as being very tough on Liesel, but her kindness occasionally shows through.’

The novel is narrated by the Grim Reaper, but it’s not known if that will be true of the film too. Shooting starts this month in Berlin.

Sam Claflin & Lily Collins Will Love Rosie

February 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sam Claflin
Last year Sam Claflin appeared in Snow White And The Huntman, while Lily Collins was in rival fairy tale movie Mirror Mirror. However working on competing Snow White tales hasn’t made them enemies as Deadline reports that they’re teaming up for the romantic comedy, Love Rosie.

The film is based on a novel by Cecila Aherne (P.S. I Love You), which has been known as Where Rainbows End, Rosie Dunne, or Love, Rosie. Collins and Claflin will be Rosie and Alex, two Irish best friends who plan to move to the US together for college. However, Rosie gets pregnant after a wild fling with a popular schoolmate, which leads to the duo taking very different paths. They never lose touch thanks to lively e-mails, notes and letters.

Juliette Towhidi (Calendar Girls) is on screenplay duty, with German director Christian Ditter set to make his English-language debut with the movie. Shooting will start in May.

Colin Farrell Finds Solace With Anthony Hopkins

February 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Colin-FarrellBack in 2011 Anthony Hopkins signed on to star in The Solace when the movie was set up at New Line. Since then the studio has cut it loose, but it’s lived on as an independent project with Hopkins still attached to star. Now he’s got some company, as Deadline reports that Colin Farrell is close to a deal to star in the crime thriller.

Afonso Poyart (Two Rabbits) is set to direct the movie, which is about an FBI agent who seeks out a doctor (Anthony Hopkins) with psychic powers to help solve a string of grisly murders. Colin Farrell will portray the serial killer who goes toe-to-toe with the good doctor. The FBI agent hasn’t been cast yet.

Sean Bailey, Ted Griffin, James Vanderbilt, and Peter Morgan wrote the screenplay. The current plan is to starts shooting in May, assuming FilmNation can make enough distribution sales at the Berlin Film Festival.

February 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

charlize-theronLast May it was reported that Amy Adams was in talks to star in the thriller Dark Places. Unfortunately negotiations broke down and Adams left the project. Now there’s a new star in the frame, as Deadline reports that Charlize Theron is circling the role.

The movie is based on Gillian Flynn’s novel about a young woman who survived the massacre of her entire family when she was just seven years old, ending up with her testifying in court that her brother was the killer. However, years later the woman is sought by The Kill Club, a secret society that is obsessed with notorious crimes, who want to find out what really happened on that night.

Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah’s Key) is directing from his own screenplay. No production schedule is known at the moment.

Oz The Great And Powerful Superbowl Spot – James Franco heads for a fantastical world

February 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s just about a month until Disney release Oz The Great And Powerful on the world, and they’ll be hoping for Alice In Wonderland style returns on their hefty investment. Now a short Superbowl spot has emerged, giving us another quick glimpse into Sam Raimi’s take on L. Frank Baum’s classic fantastical world.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Disney’s fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting.

‘Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.’

The Lone Ranger Extended Superbowl Spot – Hi ho Johnny Depp

February 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although some of the special effects shots in this extended TV spot look a little dodgy (hopefully that’ll be sorted out before the film is released), The Lone Ranger certainly seems like it’ll be spectacular and fun – which is what you’d hope considering the $200+ million budget.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “The Lone Ranger,” a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes.Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.’

The film will be released on August 9th, 2013.

Star Trek Into Darkness Superbowl Spot – Fresh look at JJ Abrams’ much anticipated sequel

February 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

What we’ve seen of Star Trek Into Darkness so far suggests a more Earth-based tale than we’re used to, and that’s certainly true of this Superbowl spot, although it’s tough to tell whether that’s because we’re just being shown our world coming under destruction or if there really will be less trekking to stars in this adventure.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

‘With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.’

The film hits cinemas May 17th, 2013, with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg and Anton Yelchin all returning, and Benedict Cumberbatch as the villainous John Harrison (who many think is actually Khan).

Iron Man 3 Superbowl Spot – Tony Stark has major plane trouble

February 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tony Stark has some major issues in the Iron Man 3 Superbowl spot – the President’s plane has exploded and 14 people have been sucked out and are plummeting to the Earth. Only Iron Man can help them!

It certainly looks spectacular, but we’ll have to wait until the film’s May 3rd release to find out whether he succeeds in saving the falling folks (although I’d be willing to bet that he does). Take a look at the original 30 second spot above, with a longer version that was released on Facebook below.

Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds – Mandarin. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Fast & Furious 6 Superbowl Spot – Plus a teaser poster for the fast-paced film

February 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of this summer’s movies hoping to get audiences excited during the Superbowl was Fast & Furious 6, which has released a minute-long spot giving us our first look at the movie. To coincide with that we’ve also got the new poster below.

Here’s the recently released synopsis: ‘Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of all-stars as the global blockbuster franchise built on speed races to its next continent in Fast & Furious 6. Reuniting for their most high-stakes adventure yet, fan favorites Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Elsa Pataky are joined by badass series newcomers Luke Evans and Gina Carano.

‘Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian’s (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incomplete.

‘Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Rodriguez). The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London. Payment? Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again.

‘Building on the worldwide blockbuster success of Fast Five and taking the action, stunts and narrative to even greater heights, Fast & Furious 6 sees director Justin Lin back behind the camera for the fourth time. He is supported by longtime producers Neal H. Moritz and Vin Diesel, who welcome producer Clayton Townsend back to the series.’

The movie hits cinemas on May 24th.
