Anne Hathaway Takes On Modern Taming Of The Shrew From Abi Morgan

January 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anne-hathawayAnne Hathaway got a Golden Globe over the weekend, and now she’s signed up for the sort of movie that could get her a second, as The Wrap says she’s taking on a modern take on The Taming Of The Shrew, which Shame and The Iron Lady’s Abi Morgan is writing.

It’s far from the first time someone has offered a new take to the classic tale as it was the basis for the 1953 musical Kiss Me Kate and the 1999 teen movie, 10 Things I Hate About You. The new version is about two sisters – Bianca, the younger sister who is the object of every man’s affection, and Katherina, the older sister who nobody likes. As the younger sister isn’t allowed to marry until Katherina does, a scheme is hatched to find a man who can ‘tame the shrew’.

It isn’t clear who Hathaway will play. Bianca might sound the most likely, but Katherina is probably the juicier role.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Coming July 2015, With Dates For Muppets 2 & Clooney Starrer 1952 Also Set

January 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pirates-4-poster2Disney has been firming up its release slate and announcing when it plans to bring us new movies over the next couple of years. While we knew when the likes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier was coming (April 4th 2014 – and it’s been confirmed it’ll be in 3D), the studio has dated several other films.

Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 is now due on July 10th 2015, which means they’ve still got a bit of time to get it ready – which is probably just as well, seeing as it was only yesterday that a new writer was hired to sort out the script.

Also dated is The Muppets 2, which is due to shoot soon in London and will reach cinemas on March 21st 2014. Brad Bird’s 1952, which is set to star George Clooney and concerns the first man to make contact with aliens, also gets a release slot, with a December 19th 2014 date set. The film will be in 3D.

There’s been a bit of shuffling with the Angelina Jolie fairy tale movie Maleficent, which had been due March 2014 but has now slipped back a few months to July 2nd, 2014.

At the moment only the US dates are confirmed, but expect them in the UK around the same time.

New Take On Ben-Hur In Development At MGM

January 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ben-hur-1959
It’s been famine to feast for MGM, which nearly went under when it declared bankruptcy a couple of years ago, but it’s now close to becoming the first studio with back-to-back $1 billion grossing movies thanks to Skyfall and The Hobbit. It seems to have renewed the studio’s confidence, as it’s now taking on a pretty ambitious project, a remake of the classic Ben-Hur.

The studio has acquired a spec script by Keith R. Clarke (The Way Back), which is apparently more faithful to the 1880 novel by Lew Wallace than either the 1959 or 1925 versions. William Wyler’s Charlton Heston starring adaptation focused on the feud between Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) and Messalla (Stephen Boyd), but this new film will explore the characters’ formative years, when they grew up as best friends before the Roman Empire conquered Jerusalem.

The script also features Jesus Christ, who encounters Ben-Hur and whose tale is told in parallel to the title character. Ben-Hur begins to believe that Christ is the Messiah, before he is killed by Pontius Pilate.

Don’t expect it soon though, as it’s fairly early in the production process and the sort of film it often takes a long time to put together. (Source: Deadline)

Assassin’s Creed Gets Writer Michael Lesslie

January 15, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

assassins-creed-game-coverFor a few months now, Michael Fassbender has been attached to the lead role in a movie version of the videogame, Assassin’s Creed. Now that project is moving forward with the news, via THR, that British playwright and screenwriter Michael Lesslie has been hired to write the screenplay.

Fassbender is set to star as a bartender who is kidnapped by a shady corporation tied to the Knights Templar secret society. The man is tasked with traveling back in time to recover ancient artifacts left behind by his ancestors, who were all deadly assassins. New Regency and Ubisoft are currently seeking a director for this adaptation.

Michael Lesslie is best known as an acclaimed playwright, whose Prince of Denmark debuted at the National Theatre in London last year.

It isn’t known when production on Assassin’s Creed may begin.

The Call Trailer – Halle Berry attempts to rescue Abigail Breslin

January 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-call-pic1Halle Berry’s movie output has been very up and down, with some good movies interspersed amongst a lot of rubbish. She’ll be hoping her new film, The Call, fares better than the likes of Dark Tide and Frankie & Alice.

The Brad Anderson (The Machinist) movie sees Berry as a 911 operator who gets call from a kidnapped teenager (Abigail Breslin). Jordan soon realises that the abduction has ties to an incident from her past, and that she must face her demons if the girl is to get out alive.

It’s one of those premises that could make for an okay movie, but already sounds slightly unbelievable. Hopefully the film will be okay. Check out the trailer below. No UK date is currently set, but it’s out in the US in March. [Read more…]

Kon-Tiki Directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg Going Spectral

January 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Joachim-Ronning-Espen-SandbergDirectors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are having a good week. The Norwegians landed a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination for Kon-Tiki, which is about explorer Thor Heyerdal’s epic crossing of the Pacific on a balsa wood raft in 1947.

Now it’s been revealed they’re in talks with Legendary Pictures’ to direct the supernatural thriller Spectral. Originally written by Ian Fried, the movie is a kind of more serious Ghostbusters, which follows a special task force that hunts evil ghosts in Manhattan, New York.

Silent Night’s Jayson Rothwell recently re-wrote the screenplay. Production is expected to begin later this year. (Source: Deadline)

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Gets Writer Jeff Nathanson

January 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pirates-4-poster2After the release of Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Disney suggested they wanted to get a fifth movie into production as quickly as possible. However with Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer busy with Lone Raner, Pirates 5 has slightly been on the back burner.

However now its gearing up again, with Variety reporting that Jeff Nathanson (Tower Heist) has been hired to work on the screenplay. Back in January 2011, five months before On Stranger Tides was released, Terry Rossio signed up to write the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 screenplay (Rossio co-wrote the first four film with Ted Elliott, who stepped away from the fifth adventure). It isn’t known if Jeff Nathanson is starting from scratch, or if he’s working from Terry Rossio’s earlier script.

Nathanson has also worked on the likes of Rush Hour 2, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, Rush Hour 3, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Johnny Depp has loosely agreed to return as Jack Sparrow – as long as the script is good enough.

Zero Dark Thirty Tops The US Box Office, With A Haunted House & Gangster Squad The Runners Up

January 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zero-dark-thirty-posterIn its first week of wide release, Zero Dark Thirty has topped the US Box Office chart, taking $24 million as it expanded onto over 2,800 screens from just over a hundred. Its success came as a surprise to many, who’d expected Gangster Squad to top the chart.

In the end the gangster noir placed third with $16.7 million, which isn’t a bad start, but probably not what Warner was hoping for its star studded movie, which has had a lot of buzz ever since the screenplay first started doing the rounds in Hollywood.

Proving spoof horror can still find an audience, the Marlon Wayans starring A Haunted House placed second on the chart with $18.8 million.

Those were the only new entries on the chart, but a couple films got a bump from the Oscar nominations, with Lincoln rising 16% from the previous weekend to take its US takings across the $150 million mark. Silver Linings Playbook also got a 38% bump to return to the top 10, thanks to its eight Oscar nominations.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of January 11th-13th.

Argo & Les Miserables Top the Golden Globes

January 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

argo-posterBen Affleck should have a big smile on his face this morning, having picked up Best Director for Argo at the Golden Globe Awards, while the movie also won Best Film, Drama. They weren’t the only ones with reasons to be happy, as Les Miserables got the Best Film, Musical Or Comedy gong, while Hugh Jackman got Best Actor, Musical Or Comedy and Anne Hathaway swiped Best Supporting Actress for the movie.

In other acting categories, Daniel Day-Lewis was feted for Lincoln in the Best Actor, Drama category, Jessica Chastain won Best Actress, Drama for Zero Dark Thirty, Jennifer Lawrence got Best Actress, Musical Or Comedy for Silver Linings Playbook, while Christoph Waltz bagged Best Supporting Actor for Django Unchained.

The only British winner amongst the film nominees was Adele, who picked up Best Original Song for Skyfall. However us Brits did better in the TV categories, with Damien Lewis winning Best TV Series Actor, Drama for Homeland, and Maggie Smith picking up a Best Supporting Actress award for Downton Abbey.

The most talked about moment of the night though was probably Jodie Foster picking up The Cecil B. Demille lifetime achievement award, where she acknowledged fully for the first time that she is a lesbian. It’s something that’s been known for a long time, and she did tangentially talk about it in a 2007 speech where she thanked her then female partner, but this is the first time she’s dealt with it head on – although her speech suggested that in an ideal world she’d keep the information private.

Glenn Ficarra & John Requa Take On The Bizarre Tale Of John McAffee

January 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Glenn-Ficarra-John-RequaJohn McAffee made his name founding the anti-virus software firm that made his name, but more recently he’s been making headlines for being a fugitive, hiding out in Belize and being suspected of the murder of his neighbour.

It’s little surprise this has attracted the attention of Hollywood, with Variety reporting that Warner Bros has hired Crazy, Stupid, Love. duo Glenn Ficarra and John Requa to direct a movie about the man. The duo have some experience telling the story of larger than life characters thanks to I Love You Phillip Morris.

The movie will be based on Joshua Davis’ Wired article, John McAffee’s Last Stand, which is well worth reading. McAffee developed the first commercial anti-virus programme, but cashed out of the company in 1994 and hasn’t had anything to do with it since then.

More recently he’s been living in Belize, and went on the run after he was suspected of the murder of American expatriate and neighbour Gregory Viant Faull. McAffee claimed he was investigating it himself and had become a fugitive because he was certain he was going to be framed by the Belize authorities. However he may not be the most reliable of people, as he’d previously been arrested on suspicion of unlicensed drug manufacturing (methamphetamine) and possession of an unlicensed weapon.

McAffee then tried to seek political asylum in Guatemala, but they denied his application. He then reportedly faked a heart attack to stop him being deported back to Belize, giving his lawyer time to ensure he was sent to the US instead.

Although there’s no info on what sort of film is planned, with Requa and Ficarra at the helm, expect it to be darkly comic. It’s certainly one hell of a story.
