Anthony Hopkins Joins Darren Aronofsky’s Noah

July 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The only thing anyone knows about Methusaleh is that he’s the oldest person in the Bible, dying at the age of 969. However he kicked the bucket just days before the Great Flood, and so will be making an appearance in Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, in the form of Anthony Hopkins.

Aronofsky announced the news himself on Twitter, saying, “I’m honored to be working with the great sir Anthony Hopkins. We just added him to the stellar cast of #Noah. ‪#methuselahlives‬.”

Quite what he’ll do in Noah is anyone’s guess, as in the Bible he’s only mentioned once and it only says how old he was, however traditionally he’s been the grandfather of Noah and was told by Enoch of the coming flood. God even delays the start of the flood due to seven days of mourning for the ancient Methuselah.

Russell Crowe will play the title role in Noah, starring alongside Saoirse Ronan, Douglas Booth, Logan Lerman, Ray Winstone, and Emma Watson.

Will Yun Lee To Play The Wolverine’s Villain

July 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While The Wolverine was severely delayed by the departure of director Darren Aronofsky, it’s now moving forward again, with Will Yun Lee (Total Recall, Red Dawn) and Brian Tee (Grimm) signing on to play The Silver Samurai and Noburo Mori in the film.

Will Yun Lee will play the main villain, Kenuichio Harada, a.k.a. The Silver Samurai, the illegitimate son of a crime lord who uses an electrified samurai suit of armour. Brian Tee’s Noboru Mori is the corrupt Minister of Justice who is about to marry the daughter of a Yakuza crime boss. The young woman is also the love interest of Hugh Jackman’s title character.

Variety adds that Hiroyuki Sanada (Rush Hour 3, Lost) will play Shingen, while Hal Yamanouchi (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Push) will play Yashida. Also recently cast are fresh faces Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima, both Japanese models who are relatively new to acting.

James Mangold is directing from a screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie and Mark Bomback. Production is expected to start next month in Australia.

Beautiful The Hobbit & Pacific Rim Comic-Con Poster Debuts

July 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Comic-Con due to kick off later this week, special posters for both The Hobbit and Pacific Rim have popped up online to prepare us for their panels. The Hobbit poster, as you can see above, is a beautiful affair, suggesting something that follows in the footsteps of Lord Of The Rings, but perhaps with a slightly more pastoral feel.

Pacific Rim meanwhile presents us with out first look at the giant robots promised in the movie, and it’s truly a whopper, with the human on its shoulder absolutely dwarfed by the massive mecha. The Guillermo Del Toro film seems human controlled massive bots going up against monsters that emerge around the Pacific.

Ernest Borgnine Dies Aged 95

July 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ernest Borgnine, one of the most dependable character actors from the 1950s onwards has died aged 95. Starting off in bit parts, he got his big break as Sgt ‘Fatso’ Judson in the Best Picture Oscar Winner From Here To Eternity. From them on he was a regular fixture on film and TV.

In 1955 he took on the title role in the boxing drama Marty, which won him a Best Actor Oscar (ahead of James Dean in East Of Eden, no less). In many ways he was lucky to get the role, as Marty started out as a TV movie with Rob Steiger, but when it was remade for the big screen, it was decided Steiger wasn’t a big enough name and so Borgnine got the job.

Ernest also starred in The Viking and McHale’s Navy, with the latter taking him to TV as well, with a successful run that ran from 1962-1966. To many he will be best remembered for The Dirty Dozen, The Wild Bunch or as Pogo on the Poseidon Adventure.

Although his fame waned after the 70s, 1980s audiences got to know him in Airwolf. He caused a minor controversy a few years ago, after saying he would neither watch nor vote for Brokeback Mountain at the Oscars, stating “If John Wayne were alive, he’d be rolling over in his grave.” However he does have one other minor role in gay history, as he was once married to gay icon Ethel Merman.

He’s actually kept working right up to 2012, although usually in small parts and despite his incredibly advanced age. Borgnine passed away from renal failure at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, surrounded by his family.

Amazing Spider-man Swings To The Top Of The US Box Office

July 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although Sony might have been worried their reboot of Spider-man might not work, they can rest easy, as while they’d predicted it would do about $120 in its first six days, it actually took $140 million. That’s behind the opening haul of any of Sam Raimi’s Spider-man movies, but comes close to the first film’s take of $144 million. It’s no doubt a good start though, especially as around the world it added another $200 million, so its global box office now stands at a very healthy $341 million.

Savages, which opened on Friday, took $16.2 million to place fourth on the chart. That’s actually not too bad for a brutal, R-rated thriller, and is actually the third biggest opening of Oliver Stone’s career. However it’s believed that word of mouth isn’t very good, so it may struggle in the coming weeks.

The only other major opener was Kary Perry: Part Of Me, which has struggled despite some great reviews. It placed eighth with $7.1 million, well behind the likes of Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber’s concert movie efforts. There’s little doubt it will be considered a flop, although Paramount will be pleased it only cost $12 million to make.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of July 6th-8th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Amazing Spider-man $65.0 $140.0
2 Ted $32.5 $120.2
3 Brave $20.1 $174.5
4 Savages $16.1 $16.1
5 Magic Mike $15.6 $72.8
6 Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection $10.2 $45.8
7 Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted $7.7 $196.0
8 Katy Perry: Part Of Me $7.1 $10.2
9 Moonrise Kingdom $4.6 $26.8
10 To Rome With Love $3.5 $5.6

New Rise Of The Guardians Trailer – Jack Frost must save the world

July 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Normally Dreamworks Animation films look like they’ll be fun but a bit lightweight and fluffy, however Rise Of The Guardian feels as if there’ll be a bit more too it than that, not least a more intricate and beautiful animation style. The film tells the story of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman, and Jack Frost – legendary characters with previously unknown extraordinary abilities. When an evil spirit known as Pitch lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children everywhere. Rise Of The Guardians is due out in November.
