Ed Helms Up For They Came Together & We’re The Millers

June 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Before he goes off to film Season 9 of The Office, Ed Helms has lined himself up two movie roles. He’ll appear in director David Wain’s They Came Together, as well as having a cameo appearance in New Line’s We’re the Millers, according to Deadline.

They Came Together is about Joel (Paul Rudd), a corporate tycoon who threatens to tear down a small shop owned by Molly (Amy Poehler). While the two instantly and understandably start to dislike one another, they develop an awkward romance in the same vein of You’ve Got Mail. Ed Helms is playing Eggbert, Molly’s love interest/accountant. Filming will begin next month.

We’re the Millers seesJason Sudeikis as a drug dealer, who hires a fake wife (Jennifer Aniston) and two kids to help him smuggle 1,000 pounds of mairjuana from Mexico to the U.S. Helms is set to play Jason Sudeikis’ shady boss, who hides a dark secret.

The actor returns to The Office set on July 30th, before leaving to shoot The Hangover Part II on September 16th.

Magic Mike’s Alex Pettyfer Joins The Butler

June 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While I Am Number Four and Beastly didn’t help his career as much as he might have hoped, Magic Mike looks like it may be the movie that truly breaks Alex Pettyfer into the big time. Now Deadline reports that Pettyfer has joined the cast of The Butler for director Lee Daniels (Precious).

The movie is about Eugene Allen (Forest Whitaker), who served as a White House butler for over 35 years. He first started working at the Presidential residence under Harry S. Truman in 1952, and retired during Ronald Reagan’s second term in 1986.

Pettyfer will play Thomas Westphall, a character from Eugene Allen’s early life who had a significant influence on the man. Other cast members include Oprah Winfrey, David Oyelowo, Jane Fonda, Alan Rickman, Minka Kelly, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Terrence Howard.

Lee Daniels is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Danny Strong. Filming is scheduled to begin next month in New Orleans.

Expendables 2 Poster Gets Masculine

June 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I’m presuming the background of this new Expendables 2 poster is proof that if there’s too much testosterone in the air, things get explosive. As with the first film, it’s sure selling itself on the line-up of action stars and their general manliness.

This time around, The Expendables are reunited when Mr. Church enlists them to take on a seemingly simple job. When things go wrong, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory, where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time – five tons of weapons-grade plutonium, more than enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that’s nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary they seek revenge from. It hits cinemas on August 17th. (Poster via Yahoo!)

Shawn Levy Gets Monster Problems

June 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Thanks to Night At The Museum and Real Steel, Shawn Levy is one of the studio’s favourite directors at the moment. He’s got quite a few films in development, and now he’s added another, as THR reports that Paramount is in negotiations to pick up Monster Problems, a spec script by Brian Duffield for Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps banner to produce.

Plot details are being kept secret, but the movie has been described as a post-apocalyptic road movie in the vein of Mad Max and Zombieland, but with a John Hughes-esque love story at its centre. Quite how that works isn’t known, but it’s certainly intriguing, and the title suggests it’ll also serve up some monsters.

At the moment Levy is just set to produce, but could end up directing. That won’t be for a while though, as he’s planning a July shoot for his next movie, The Internship, which will reteam Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. He’s also got several other movies in development, including a new take on Frankenstein.

Madagascar 3 Stays Atops The US Box Office

June 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

New releases Rock Of Ages ages and That’s My Boy slightly faltered in their first weekend in US cinemas, which has allowed Madagascar 3 to steal the show for a second week, topping the box office with $35.5 million. It’s good news for Deamworks Animation, as it means the movie is now ahead of where the previous Madagascar movies were after 10 days in cinemas.

Prometheus stayed in second spot with $20.2 million, while newcomer Rock Of Ages had to settle for third place with only $15 million, despite a star-filled cast and a prime summer release spot. Musicals always tend to be difficult beasts, but Universal had hoped they’d be able to ape Mamma Mia! and Hairspray, which both opened in the $27 million range. It seems that while the movie was hoping audiences would see cheesy fun, they just saw cheese and stayed away.

Doing even worse was Adam Sandler’s That’s My Boy, which only grossed a pretty miserable $13 million. Sandler has become one of Hollywood’s more dependable stars when it comes to making money, but this is his worst opening for a live-action comedy since Happy Gilmore in 1996!

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend on June 15th-17th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted $35.5 $120.4
2 Prometheus $20.2 $88.8
3 Rock Of Ages $15.0 $15.0
4 Show White And The Huntsman $13.8 $122.6
5 That’s My Boy $13.0 $13.0
6 Men In Black 3 $10.0 $152.6
7 The Avengers $8.8 $586.7
8 The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $2.2 $35.1
9 Moonrise Kingdom $2.1 $6.7
10 What To Expect When You’re Expecting $1.3 $38.7

Jonah Hill Returns To Django Unchained

June 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We may have already had the first trailers, but Django Unchained is still shooting, several months after production began. Late last year Jonah Hill signed onto a role in the film, but then backed out due to scheduling issues. However Deadline reports that Hill is back in the movie, although in a different role to the one he was initially going to play.

The actor had been in talks to play slave owner Scotty Harmony, who loses Django’s wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) to plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). Now he’s back in another, smaller role, although it’s not known exactly what part he’ll play.

Jamie Foxx stars as Django, a freed slave who teams up with a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to reunite with his wife. Quentin Tarantino is directing from his own original screenplay. It’s due in cinemas at Christmas.

Ninja Turtles Reboot Gets Delayed Due To Script Problems

June 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A few months ago Paramount Pictures set a December 25th, 2013 release date for their new live action Ninja Turtles reboot. However that’s now been pushed back until at least May 16th, 2013, according to THR, in order to work out issues with the script. Only last week plans were moving ahead to shoot the film later this summer, so this is a bit of a last minute move.

The studio has laid off pre-production staff members, with the start of production postponed for at least 10 weeks. The screenplay by André Nemec and Josh Appelbaum is said to be the primary reason for the production shut down. It isn’t known if Paramount is seeking new writers or if the guys responsible for the script will get a chance to iron out the problem.

Jonathan Liebesman is still attached to, with Michael Bay producing through his Platinum Dunes production company. This is the third major production that Paramount has delayed in the past few months. Last month G.I. Joe Retaliation was bumped nine months from June 29th, 2012 to March 29th, 2013 to be converted into 3D. World War Z has also been pushed from this December into the summer of 2013, to accommodate extensive reshoots.

Don’t be shocked if there are even more delays to Ninja Turtles, especially as initial reports said the movie had been put on indefinite hiatus rather than just being delayed by 10 weeks.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Joins Mad Max: Fury Road

June 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

She may be beloved by FHM readers, but model turned actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley didn’t exactly get glowing reviews for her acting in Transformers 3. However now she’s getting another chance to show off her skills, as Deadline reports that she has joined the cast of Mad Max: Fury Road for director George Miller.

The actress will play one of the Five Wives held by Tom Hardy’s Max Rockatansky, who are being chased by the movie’s villains. Zoë Kravitz and Riley Keough are portraying two of the other spouses. Charlize Theron, Teresa Palmer, Nicholas Hoult, and Adelaide Clemens also star.

Production is scheduled to begin next month in Africa, after plans to shoot last year in Australia were nixed by adverse weather condition.

Screenwriter Noah Oppenheim Takes On George Orwell’s 1984

June 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

1984 may have been 28 years ago, but Ron Howard thinks George Orwell’s novel of the same name is still prescient enough to make a new film version out of. Howard’s Imagine Entertainment has hired screenwriter Noah Oppenheim (The Secret Life of Houdini) to adapt the book into a screenplay, according to Deadline.

The book follows Winston Smith, a man who works at the Ministry of Truth, literally rewriting history as it unfolds. He tries to rebel against this totalitarian society – and the all-seeing Big Brother – by falling in love, which is strictly forbidden.

Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Julie Yorn are producing for Imagine Entertainment. A director has not been attached yet, although there’s a possibility Howard will helm himself if the script is right (and The Dark Tower doesn’t move forward).

Oppenheim is becoming a bit of a remake/adaptation specialist, as he’s also working on new versions on War Games, and a remake of Daniel Espinosa’s Snabba Cash.

Colin Farrell Will Be Saving Mr. Banks

June 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Saving Mr. Banks got off the ground with a strong cast already attached, as Tom Hanks is set to play Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as Mary Poppins author PL Travers. Now Colin Farrell is in negotiations to join the Walt Disney Pictures film, according to Deadline.

The film is about Travers and shifts between her childhood days in early 1900s Queensland, which helped inform her creation of Mary Popping, and her experiences in the 1960s, negotiating with Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) for a big-screen adaptation of her books. She long held out from Disney’s advances, but eventually sold the rights (although she wasn’t happy with the resulting film).

Colin Farrell will play the author’s father, a banker who starts drinking heavily after going through some hard times financially. His hardships had a profound effect on her writing and it was him who Mr. Banks in Mary Poppins was based on.

John Lee Hancock is directing from a screenplay by Kelly Marcel, with shooting scheduled to begin in the autumn.
