Benjamin Walker Climbs Ed Zwick’s The Great Wall

June 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Benjamin Walker may become a breakout star in a few weeks, thanks to playing the title role in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. He’s already booked a follow-up, as Variety reports that Walker has joined the cast of The Great Wall, alongside the previously cast Henry Cavill, for director Edward Zwick.

The film revolves around the mystery of why The Great Wall of China was built. Although the Great Wall was initially constructed over 2,000 years ago, when there were a distinct lack of white people in China for Cavill and Walker to play, the film will look at the Wall in the 15th Century, when the most famous, iconic stone parts of the Great Wall were erected. The movie sees a group of British warriors arrive in China just as the wall is being hurriedly reinforced and lengthened. It’s not just to keep the mongols out, as there’s something otherworldly the Chinese are trying to keep at bay, which emerges after nightfall.

Edward Zwick is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Marshall Herskovitz, based on an original idea by Legendary Pictures executive Thomas Tull and World War Z author Max Brooks. it isn’t known when it might shoot.

Jim Henson Company Developing Frog & Toad Movie

June 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Jim Henson Company may be going animated, as they have acquired the rights to the children’s books Frog and Toad and is busy developing them into an animated film, according to Variety. Written and illustrated by Arnold Lobel in the 1970s, each of the four Frog and Toad books include five short stories chronicling the exploits of a frog and his friend, a toad.

“Frog and Toad has tremendous value with parents who read these charming stories when they were children and are now sharing them with their own kids,” said Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company. “With such high caliber talent on board, the delightful and funny adventures of these two great friends – with a nod to the classic ‘buddy movie’ – will bring a whole new audience to their big screen debut.”

Craig Bartlett (Hey Arnold!) will write the screenplay and Cory Edwards (Hoodwinked) is attached to direct. The Jim Henson Company has been slightly out in the wilderness since selling The Muppets to Disney in 2004, but is now developing a slate of family films they’re hoping to make.

Thor 2 Eyes Zachary Levi To Replace Joshua Dallas As Fandral

June 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It seems Zachary Levi may be swapping the world of Chuck for Asgard, as it Joshua Dallas has left the role of Fandral and may be replaced by Levi (at least if the producers get their way). Dallas has confirmed that he is not coming back as Fandral for the superhero follow-up, because of his commitment to the TV series Once Upon a Time.

He commented to EW, “I’ll be missing out on wearing all that hair. The timing wasn’t right. I’m bummed about it because I had such a great experience and great time making the first film and was really excited about coming back. Marvel and Disney tried to make it work. But because of my commitment to Once Upon a Time, I was not going to be able to do both. So I’ll have to hand the reins over to someone else. I love Marvel. I wish them all the best. I will certainly be first in line to see it. On the other hand, I’m going back to the best job on TV. I love it and can’t wait to delve in more.”

Marvel Studios will have to recast the role, with THR reporting that Zachary Levi said to be in early talks for Fandral. The ink isn’t dry on this deal yet, but it is likely since he was first up for the role in the original (before being forced to drop out himself). Shooting on Thor 2 is scheduled to start later this summer, around the same time Once Upon A Time – Season 2 starts filming.

Madagacar 3 Tops The US Box Office

June 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Both major new releases in the US outperformed expectations over the weekend, with Madagascar 3 topping the chart with $60 million. It was ahead of expectations and in line with the openings of the earlier films in the franchise, suggesting the movie will have legs.

Prometheus had to settle for second spot with $50 million, which was still more than many had thought it would get and very good for an R rated movie. Indeed it’s the second highest opening ever for Ridley Scott, behind Hannibal, and the 12th biggest start for an R rated movie ever.

Those were the only new openers in the top 10, although Moonrise Kingdom made its first appearance in the upper echelons of the chart, as it expanded the number of screens it was on and took $1.58 million to finish 10th, from only 96 screens, which ain’t bad at all. Here’s the top 10 films at the US box office for the weekend of June 8th-10th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted $60.3 $60.3
2 Prometheus $50.0 $50.0
3 Show White And The Huntsman $23.0 $98.5
4 Men In Black 3 $13.5 $135.5
5 The Avengers $10.8 $571.8
6 The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $3.2 $31.0
7 What To Expect When You’re Expecting $2.7 $35.7
8 Battleship $2.2 $59.8
9 The Dictator $2.1 $55.1

First Look At Idris Elba In Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim

June 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you were hoping the first image from Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim would reveal some of the promised giant robots, you’re out of luck, as it’s actually a rather quiet image of Idris Elba wearing a black suit and carrying a helmet.

It’s not particularly revealing, especially as it doesn’t give much hint at the unique style Del Toro is known for. But it’s still our first look, and timesly as Elba is currently in cinema in Prometheus!

As well as Elba, Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Day, Pacific Rim and is due to to open July 12, 2013. Here’s the synopsis: ‘When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.’ (Image via MovieHole)

First Dredd Poster Hits – Welcome to Mega City One

June 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a sense that there have been a few problems with Dredd, not least because it was filmed well over a year ago, and its release has been delayed from last December to this September 7th. Mix that with reports director Pete Travis’ input got restricted in post-production and there are reasons to worry. However there’s still plenty of promise, and if it can get close to being as cool as this first poster (which debuted on JoBlo), we should be okay.

Dredd takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilisation on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. It’s a tough world, and one that’s hopefully going to be better than when Stallone was in charge.

Lena Headey, Olivia Thirlby and Domhnall Gleeson also star, with Pete Travis (Vantage Point) directing and Alex Garland on scripting duties (and it’s the last of these that should give us the most hope). Take a look at a couple of new images below.

RoboCop Gets Abbie Cornish

June 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Limitless and Sucker Punch star Abbie Cornish is in early talks to join the cast of RoboCop for MGM Studios and director José Padilha, playing the wife of the title character.

In the film Detroit cop Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) is left for dead after being shot on duty. He is turned into the half-man, half-robot crime-fighting machine RoboCop, who goes on a quest to clean up the city’s mean streets.

Cornish will play Murphy’s wife, who thinks her husband is still dead, unaware of his cyborg resurrection, although presumably she’ll find out the truth at some point! She joins a cast that also includes Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson.

José Padilha is directing from a screenplay by Joshua Zetumer. Production is scheduled to begin later this summer in Toronto.

Damon Lindelof Rewriting World War Z Before Reshoots

June 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It always raises eyebrows when a film need extensive reshoots, as it suggests a film’s in trouble (but not always). However if a script needs major rewriting for those reshoots, it’s pretty much a guarantee a film is under major stress (although with more hope the problem can actually be sorted).

That’s what’s happening with the Brad Pitt starrer World War Z, as Prometheus screenwriter Damon Lindelof has been hired to rewrite the script for World War Z, before the zombie project undergoes extensive reshoots.

Back in March Paramount pushed the adaptation of Max Brooks’ novel from a December 21 release to June 21, 2013, and more recently it’s been revealed the reson for the delay is because of the need for around seven weeks of reshoots. Lindelof will reportedly focus his script work on the third act, although no specific story details were given. The reshoots will commence in September or October. Matthew Michael Carnahan wrote the initial screenplay.

Marc Forster is directing a cast that includes Brad Pitt, Matthew Fox, Mireille Enos, and James Badge Dale. The story revolves around a United Nations worker (Brad Pitt) who travels the world, interviewing the few human survivors of a worldwide zombie apocalypse.

Although this news is worrying, it’s doesn’t mean the finished film will be a disaster. After all, Men In Black III’s script was so problematic they shut down production partway through filming to sort it out, and that’s turned out to be a decent success. (Source: THR)

New Ice Age: Continental Drift Trailer

June 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ice Age has proved one of the most successful animated franchises around, with the third film in the series grossing over $700 million. This July Ice Age: Continental Drift arrives, which continues the saga’s continual move away from scientific accuracy. Here’s the synopsis: ‘Scrat’s nutty pursuit of the cursed acorn, which he’s been after since the dawn of time, has world-changing consequences – a continental cataclysm that triggers the greatest adventure of all for Manny, Diego and Sid. In the wake of these earth-shattering upheavals, Sid reunites with his long lost family, and the gang encounters a ragtag menagerie of colorful new characters determined to stop them from returning home.’ The film arrives in UK cinemas on July 13th.

360 Trailer – First promo for Fernando Meirelles’ ensemble tale

June 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s taken a while to get 360 from its festival debuts last September and October to its big screen release, but it’s due to hit UK cinemas on August 10th, and the first trailer is now here. Fernando Meirelles’ drama is inspired by Arthur Schnitzler’s classic La Ronde, and combines a modern and dynamic roundelay of stories into one, linking characters from different cities and countries in a vivid tale of love in the 21st century. Starting in Vienna, the film beautifully weaves through Paris, London, Bratislava, Rio, Denver and Phoenix, with cast including Anthony Hopkins, Rachel Weisz, Jude Law and Ben Foster.
