Karl Urban and Ben Barnes Go Into Overdrive

October 26, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Actors Karl Urban and Ben Barnes have signed on to star in Overdrive for director Antonio Negret (Seconds Apart) and producer Pierre Morel (Taken), according to Variety. News of the movie first came back in May, when Alex Pettyfer and Matthew Goode were in early talks to star.

However it seems they’re now out and Karl Urban and Ben Barnes are in as a pair of car-thief brothers, who venture to the south of France to find more work, and end up getting in over their heads. Emilia Clarke is in talks for the female lead. Expect plenty of pretty French vistas, as the screenwriters apparently wrote the movie after visiting Marseilles deciding the city and the area around were so cinematic, they needed to create a movie to show it off.

Derek Haas and Michael Brandt (Wanted) wrote the script, and will produce alongside Taken director Pierre Morel. Production is scheduled to begin October 29 in Marseilles, with a release planned for sometime next year.

David Slade Set To Direct Coward

October 26, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

While David Slade went rather mainstream with Twilight: Eclipse, before his sejourn into the world of teen vampires he was the helmer of some pretty hardcore horrors such as Hard Candy and 30 Days Of Night. It appears he hopes to return to darker territory, although more noir than horror, as Variety report that Hunting Lane Films has acquired Ed Brubaker’s graphic novel Coward, with Slade signed on to direct.

Brubaker is adapting his own graphic novel, which centers on Leo, a master thief who can plan and execute any heist known to man, even though his world is populated with dirty cops, hustlers, and low-lifes. Coward, which won the Eisner award for best new series in 2007, is the first in a planned six-part series.

It isn’t known when the movie might go into production, but it isn’t likely to be for a while, as Slade is still scheduled to make the Dracula tale, The Last Voyage Of The Demeter, next.

Peter Jackson Confirmed For Tintin 2

October 26, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

If things had gone as originally planned, Guilermo Del Toro would be directing The Hobbit movies and Peter Jackson would now be busy putting together the second of the Tintin movies. Since he had to step into the Tokien breach, it’s been uncertain if he would indeed still take on a Tintin sequel, but now it’s been confirmed that he will.

While out on the interview circuit, Steven Spielberg answered “Yes” to the question on whether or not Peter Jackson would still step into the director’s seat on the next film, and also revealed that the Prisoners of the Sun screenplay is finished and ready to shoot. “[Sony and Paramount] were willing to do one movie with us,” Spielberg says, “And then give us the financial wherewithal to develop a script, do all the visual storyboards and get it really in launch position. So we can launch pretty quickly on a second movie. The script is already written.”

That means a second Tintin movie is still reliant on the first film being a hit, and finding a slot in Peter Jackson’s schedule. He’s still currently mid-shoot on The Hobbit movies and has two years of post-production ahead of him. As Tintin is motion-capture, he may find it easier to slot it in, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Potter DVDs Leaving Shop Shelves

October 25, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

While it hasn’t 100% been confirmed that the same thing will happen in the UK, it appears it’s going to get a lot more difficult to get hold of Harry Potter on DVD and Blu-ray in the New Year, as Warner Bros. has announced they will stop shipping new orders of Harry Potter Blu-rays and DVDs to shops starting on December 29th.

At the moment this is just confirmed for the US, but it appears it’s Warner’s plan to have a worldwide moratorium on Potter. It wouldn’t be surprising if us Brits get a little bit more time though, as the plan includes getting Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and any box sets off the shelves, and seeing as the last Potter flick doesn’t arrive in UK shops until December 2nd, Warner would be giving themselves less than a month to make all the cash they can from the film before they stop taking new orders of it.

Disney employs a similar strategy of pulling some of its classic titles, such as Snow White and The Lion King, out of the vault with brand new editions after being unavailable for several years (with Disney, it’s normally a seven year cycle). It is unclear how long this Harry Potter moratorium will last, but if you want a complete matching set of first edition packaging, you’ve only got a limited amount of time.

I wouldn’t expect this moratorium to last that long, and it wouldn’t be shocking to hear that Warner already has new DVD and Blu-ray edition planned for the coming years, with more bonus features etc. Indeed there’s long been talk of extended versions of the movies being released and 3D versions of all the film are in the works.

John Cusack Counts Himself In For The Numbers Station

October 25, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

One of the joys of John Cusack is that you never know what sort of movie he might come out with next, as his resume is filled with everything from mega-budget action spectaculars to tiny little indie flicks. Now he’s going action thriller again, as Variety reports that Cusack has signed up to star in The Numbers Station, opposite Malin Akerman, who was cast last month.

Although not 100% clear, it seems Cusack is taking over the role Ethan Hawke was originally going to play, as a disgraced black-ops CIA agent who gets sent to a dead-end assignment in the Nevada desert. He is told to protect a code breaker (Akerman) working at an isolated CIA broadcast station. It’s supposed to be an easy job, but gets a lot more difficult when she’s targeted by unknown assailants.

The Candidate’s Kasper Barfoed is directing with shooting set to begin in the next few months, after funding is locked down at next month’s American Film Market.

Phillip Noyce Directing The Arrangement

October 25, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Since he directed Salt, Phillip Noyce has been casting about for new films, flirting with several movies that he may take on. Now it appears he wants to make a movie called The Arrangement, according to THR, which sounds rather like Indecent Proposal.

The film follows a married woman who makes a deal to spend three days with a wealthy man in exchange for a bailout loan and must then choose between him and her husband. Brian Tucker wrote the script.

The Arrangement isn’t likely to be next for Noyce though, who seems closer to directing Timeless, which will star Liam Hemsworth as a man who is so obsessed with his dead wife, that he spends the entire fortune she left to him trying to time travel so he can see her once more (which sounds more creepy than romantic to me).

Lily Collins On For The English Teacher

October 25, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Lily Collins is one of those actresses who seems poised to take over the world of film, but who could just as easilys completely disappear from sight in a couple of year as actually manage to hit the a-list. She’s got the lead role Tarsem’s Snow White movie and The Mortal Instruments coming up and now Deadline reports she’s  joined the indie comedy, The English Teacher.

The movie is about Julianne Moore’s title character, a passionate teacher who convinces her former star pupil (Michael Angarano) to put on his unproduced play at the high school. Lily Collins will portray a popular student who clashes with the teacher. Nathan Lane and Greg Kinnear are also set to star.

Craig Zisk is directing The English Teacher, with shooting set to start later this week in New York City.

Jason Sudeikis Is Having A Dog Fight

October 25, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Hall Pass and Horrible Bosses actor Jason Sudeikis is currently floating on the edge of whether he will be an eternal supporting player or whether he’ll be able to become a full-on leading man in his own right. Now he’s got another supporting part to add to his roster, as THR reports he has joined the upcoming political comedy Dog Fight for Warner Bros. and director Jay Roach.

Based on Shawn Harwell (Eastbound & Down) and Chris Henchy’s (The Other Guys) script, the movie is about fierce political rivals (Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis) in a small South Carolina congressional district. No details are known about Jason Sudeikis’ character. Sarah Baker and Katherine LaNasa also recently joined the cast.

Production will begin next month in New Orleans, with Warner Bros. already setting an August 10, 2012 release.

Affleck & Damon Reuniting For Whitey Bulger Biopic

October 25, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

For quite a while now, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have been looking at ways they can reunite on screen, and now it seems they’ve settled on a new biopic of the notorious crime figure Whitey Bulger. Ben Affleck revealed the news to GQ, saying that he will direct, co-star, and produce the untitled biopic, while Matt Damon will star as Whitey Bulger. Casey Affleck has also landed a supporting role.

Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter is writing the screenplay, which will span Whitey Bulger’s entire life, from childhood through his rise up the Boston criminal ranks and on to becoming an FBI informant. Whitey Bulger was a notorious Boston crime figure who disappeared in 1994 after he learned the FBI was going to arrest him. He was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List for 12 of his 16 years on the lam, before his arrest last June in Santa Monica, California. Jack Nicholson’s Frank Costello character in The Departed is loosely based on him (in fact Departed producer Graham King also has a Whitey Bulger biopic in the works).

Ben Affleck commented “We’ve heard about Whitey Bulger since we were kids, and we are excited by the prospect of putting it on screen.”

It isn’t known when the movie might go into production, and timing may depend on whether Affleck signs on the dotted line to make The Stand, which he recently became attached to.

Joss Whedon Reveals Much Ado About Nothing

October 25, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

You’d think that with The Avengers on his plate Joss Whedon would have enough to do to fill his time. However, he’s apparently not content with just the superheroes, as he’s also found time to shoot a new version of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, filled with actors he’s worked with on his TV shows and films.

Hints about the movie were first tweeted over the weekend by the likes of Firefly actors Nathan Fillion and Sean Maher, along with links to a website – muchadomovie.com. However at the time nobody was certain exactly what it was, with some speculating it was a web series (like Whedon’s Dr. Horrible), other saying it was some sort of joke and still more betting it was a real movie, even though they weren’t sure how Whedon would have had time to make it, or if he did, how he kept a secret.

However, now Bellwether Pictures – a micro-studio Whedon has set up to produce ‘small, independent narratives for all media, embracing a DIY ethos and newer technologies’ – has revealed more info. Apparently the new take on Shakespeare’s classic was filmed in just 12 days on location in Santa Monica. the film features a stellar cast of beloved (or soon to be beloved) actors – some of them veterans of Shakespearean theater, some completely new to the form. But all dedicated to the idea that this story bears retelling, that this dialogue is as fresh and intoxicating as any being written, and that the joy of working on a passion project surrounded by dear friends, admired colleagues and an atmosphere of unabashed rapture far outweighs their hilariously miniature paychecks.

Shot in glorious black and white by Jay Hunter (Paper Heart, Dollhouse), the film stars Amy Acker (The Cabin in the Woods, Alias) and Alexis Denisof (How I Met Your Mother, Angel) as Beatrice and Benedick, the world’s least likely lovers headed for their inevitable tumble into love. As Joss Whedon puts it: “The text is to me a deconstruction of the idea of love, which is ironic, since the entire production is a love letter – to the text, to the cast, even to the house it’s shot in.” The supporting cast includes Nathan Fillion (Castle, Waitress) as Dogberry, Clark Gregg (The Avengers, Iron Man) as Leonato, Fran Kranz (The Cabin in the Woods, Dollhouse) as Claudio and Reed Diamond (Franklin & Bash, Moneyball) as Don Pedro. The film should be completed by early spring and headed for the festival circuit.

It’ll be interesting to see what Whedon’s managed to come up with.
