James Mangold To Direct City State

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The Wolverine may not shoot until next spring (probably), but the director of that movie, James Mangold, is already eyeing future projects, as Deadline reports he’s signed on to direct a remake of Olaf de Fleur Johannesson’s Icelandic thriller, City State.

The original centres on four strangers whose lives are affected when the foreign mafia moves in on the Icelandic drug trade. The quartet includes a crooked police captain who is in love with a prostitute, an elderly mafia boss who wants to get out of the crime syndicate alive, a mechanic seeking vengeance for the death of his unborn child, and a female police officer who is attacked by street thugs and then takes the law into her own hands.

James Mangold will likely spend some of the time while he’s waiting for The Wolverine to gear up (once Hugh Jackman has finished on Les Miserables), writing the Ctiy State script. It’s not known though when the movie might shoot.

Michael Bay In Talks For Transformers 4 & 5

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

After every Transformers movie, Michael Bay says, ‘Never again’, and then a few months later he’s back in talks to return to the franchise. That’s happened again, as despite Bay saying Dark of The Moon was most definitely his last Transformers movie, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner has revealed that the toy company is in “active discussions” with Paramount Pictures for Transfomers 4, and that executive producer Steven Spielberg and director Michael Bay are involved in the talks.

That’s a long way from saying Bay will definitely direct, as he could just be producing the next installment, but Variety reports on one way they might try and bring him back, which is to shoot parts 4 & 5 back-to-back.

Screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who wrote both Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Transformers: Dark of the Moon, is said to have an idea for both sequels, which Paramount Pictures is keen on. The development process is still very early though, and they are still hashing out ideas. It is said that rising costs for big-budget movies like this, and Hasbro’s need for an increased licensing window, are a few reasons why they might go back-to-back.

One certainty for these sequels is Shia LaBeouf will definitely not return as Sam Witwicky. Insiders close to the production indicate Jason Statham’s name has come up numerous times as a possible replacement for Shia LaBeouf (a slightly odd choice, but he’s definitely a lot cheaper), but at the moment it’s largely speculation.

If Bay does return, the plan is apparently that’ll he’ll shoot his long-gestating movie Pain And Gain, which he put off to make Transformers 3, early next year, before going back to the robots in late 2012 and early 2013.

Aaron Eckhart To Play Beach Boys Drummer

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Drummers often get overlooked in the history of music, but Dennis Wilson, drummer for the Beach Boys and brother of bandmates Carl and Brian, is getting his own biopic, simply titled The Drummer.

Variety reports that the film now has a lead actor in the form of Aaron Eckhart, who’s onboard to play Dennis. He’s apparently been in negotiations for the film for several months, and after signing on for I Frankenstein recently he’s decided to also commit to this.

However seeing as Dennis is generally seen as the dark horse of the Beach Boys, the real question is why he’s worth making a movie about. The film will focus on the last six years of his life, until his death in 1983. That time saw him stepping into the limelight, releasing a solo album, Pacific Ocean Blue in 1977 (Eckhart will apparently record his own versions of songs from that record). However he was also battling with drug and alcohol problems and eventually drowned whilst swimming drunk.

It doesn’t seem therefore that the movie will touch too much on Wilson’s late 60s involvement with Charles Manson, which some saying this is what eventually led to the murder of Roman Polanski’s pregnant wife, Sharon Tate. They may find a way of tucking that in, but as Dennis always hated mention of his involvement with Manson, and two of his children are involved in the film as producers, they may just ignore that aspect of his life completely.

Randy Miller (Bottle Shock) will direct, with shooting scheduled to begin next year, probably in the early summer.

Shawn Levy Signs On For Pinocchio Prequel

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Prequels to classic tales seem to be popular at the moment, from Frankenstein to Wizard Of Oz, and now Pinocchio is getting in on the action. Deadline reports 20th Century Fox has acquired Michael Vukadinovich’s spec screenplay, The Three Misfortunes of Geppetto, with Real Steel and Night At The Museum helmer Shawn Levy set to direct.

The script focuses on Geppetto’s life before creating the Pinocchio marionette, following his trials and tribulations through war and misfortune, while trying to win over his true love. It all sounds a bit strange, seeing as Geppetto has always been a bit of an irrelevancy before Pinocchio was brought to life. However the script must have something about it, as Fox bought it barely a moment after it had gone on the market.

This is the third Pinocchio related project in development. Guillermo del Toro is teaming up with The Jim Henson Company for a 3D stop-motion animation project, while Warner Bros. has a live-action Pinocchio project in the works, which Tim Burton is circling.

Matt Reeves Enters The Twilight Zone

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of interest in directing The Twilight Zone. We reported a few days ago that Warner Bros wanted Chris Nolan, but if he passed on it, Michael Bay, Alfonso Cuaron and Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt were also being considered (Harry Potter’s David Yates was also in the running but had decline).

Now it seems the studio has chosen their man, with Cloverfield and Let Me In’s Matt Reeves hired to reboot the long-running franchise.

While previous incarnations of The Twilight Zone, including the ill-fated 1980s film and the various different versions of the television series, have all been anthologies of different stories, Jason Rothenberg’s script for this reboot is a stand-alone big budget sci-fi action thriller that plays into the mythology of the original show. It’s difficult to see how this can really be Twilight Zone if it’s only one story – but then, in Hollywood branding is everything, so I presume that’s the thinking here!

Warner Bros. hopes to have Matt Reeves signed soon and the script completely finished for a summer 2012 shoot. That’ll mean some shaking up of Reeves’ schedule, as he’s already attached to make This Dark Endeavor, The Passage and 8 O’Clock in the Morning, although none of them has a start date as yet.

Christopher McQuarrie Crosses The Rubicon

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

He’s currently shooting One Shot with Tom Cruise, but writer/director Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Way Of The Gun) already has his eye on the future, as Deadline reports he has a follow-up planned with Rubicon. It’s designed as a full-on multi-platform project, which will be turned into a movie, a graphic novel, and a video game.

Announced at New York Comic Con, the concept centres on a Navy SEAL team battling the Taliban. The movie, graphic novel, and video game will be developed simultaneously, with each version featuring separate storylines. The project is described as Seven Samurai set in Afghanistan. McQuarrie will write, direct, and produce the movie.

Here’s what he had to say about the project, “I’ve always been fascinated with Navy SEALs in general and their role in Afghanistan in particular. With Rubicon, Mark Long and Dan Capel (producers) have created the perfect environment for an intense action franchise.”

In case you’re wondering what a ‘Rubicon’ is, it’s a reference to a river in Italy made famous when Julius Caesar and his army crossed it, sparking the war that led to him becoming ruler of the Roman world. Since then ‘Crossing the Rubicon’ has come to mean reaching a point of no return.

X-Men Writers Head For Top Gun 2

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Just in case you were wondering whether the idea of them making a sequel to Top Gun was a crazy dream you had about a year ago comes news, via Variety, that Paramount has hired screenwriters Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz to write Top Gun 2. The duo have had a pretty good year, having worked on the scripts for both X-Men: First Class and Thor, and now they’ll get to take on the classic 80s flick.

No plot details have been officially released yet, but director Tony Scott said last year that the sequel will revolve around a group of young Air Force pilots, who fly remote-controlled drone planes from a command centre. The story was inspired by a chance meeting the director had with one of these young pilots on a commercial flight.

It’s not known if anyone from the original will reprise their role in this follow-up, although it has previously been indicated there’d be a role for Tom Cruise if he wanted it. It isn’t known either when the film might shoot, although it’s said to be a priority for Tony Scott.

First Three Stooges Poster Emerges

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

The Farrelly Brothers had a surprising amount of difficulty getting The Three Stooges off the ground, with both financing and cast issues resulting in the initially explosive trio of Sean Penn, Jim Carrey and Benicio Del Toro ending up as the less starry Chris Diamantopoulos (Moe), Sean Hayes (Larry), and Will Sasso (Curly).

They’re a talented bunch, but as they’re not a-list, it’s probably why Fox has gone for the silhouette approach with this first poster – after all, the Stooges, even in black, are more famous than the people playing them. There undoubtedly will be a lot more for us to see before the movie opens next April.

Real Steel Wins US Box Office Race Again

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

This weekend it was a race between Footloose and Real Steel as to which would top the US box office. On Friday it looked like Footloose was pulling ahead, but with that movie slightly running out of steam as the weekend went on and Real Steel benefitting from family audiences on Saturday and Sunday, it was the robot boxing film that won out with $16.3 million.

That just pulled it ahead of new entry Footloose, which ended up with $16.1 million (although when final figures are released later today, it is possible Footloose will pull ahead of Real Steel). It’s not a bad start for the dancing flick, which only cost $24 million to make.

However while Footloose had reason to be pleased, The Thing didn’t, as it underperformed with only $8.7 million on its debut. While that was enough for third place, it was less than had been expected. The movie wasn’t helped by poor reviews and a lacklustre marketing campaign.

The only other new entry was The Big Year, which took a pretty underwhelming $3.3 million to place ninth on the chart, despite the presence of Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin. It was always going to be tough to get people to buy into a movie about bird watching, so perhaps this result isn’t that surprising.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of October 14th-16th 2011.

Phantom Menace 3D Poster Arrives

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

While you’d have thought it would have made more sense to convert Star Wars: A New Hope to 3D first, as that’s what a lot more people would be interested in seeing, George Lucas continues to plough his own ‘We’re doing this my way!’ furrow, whether it’s continually altering the movies with each release or insisting we get The Phantom Menace in 3D first.

The movie is due out next spring, and it’s only if that’s a success that we’ll get Episodes II-VI in three-dimensions, which almost sounds like blackmail to get people in the door for Phantom Menace, in the hope it’ll ensure they’ll get to see the movies they actually want to see in 3D. Now the first poster has arrived, which certainly concentrates on the stronger aspects of the film (barring the mysteriously absent Liam Neeson), while completely ignoring the existence of Jar Jar Binks and Jake Llloyd, which can only be a good thing.

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace will be in cinemas February 10, 2012, with the 3D trailer out soon.
