Rob Letterman Set To Helm Live-Action Pokemon Movie, Detective Pikachu

December 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rob-lettermanI have to say, the title Detective Pikachu doesn’t give me an awful lot of faith in the planned live-action Pikachu, but perhaps the film itself won’t be as embarrassingly cheesy as that makes it sound. Indeed, there’s a good chance it’ll get a different name by the time it reaches cinema.

It has moved a step closer to getting made though, as Variety reports that Rob Letterman has signed on to direct. To be honest, his back catalogue causes a little trepidation too, as the likes of Shark Tale, Gulliver’s Travels, and Goosebumps aren’t exactly masterpieces.

Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch wroted the script for the movie, which its believed Legendary Pictures wants to get made as quickly as possible, to hopefully capitalise on the renewed popularity of the franchise following the release of the Pokemon Go app.

Beaches Remake Trailer – Idina Menzel & Nia Long have the wind beneath their wings

November 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

beaches-2017-slideThe 1988 Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey movie Beaches is deservedly beloved by many, but if you look at the basics of the plot, it is a bit like a Lifetime movie. Now it’s becoming one, with Lifetime remaking the film (or at least re-adapting Iris Rainer’s novel), with Idina Menzel and Nia Long.

Once more the movie will chart the relationship between CC (Menzel) and Hillary (Long), who meet as children and maintain their friendship as they age, despite coming from different backgrounds and their lives going in different directions. There will be some differences though, with THR saying that, the ‘remake will follow CC as she builds her career in Los Angeles, whereas the original took the young pair to NYC while CC made a name for herself on Broadway.’

The film will certainly trade on the earlier version though, with Menzel offering new takes on Midler’s classic songs that featured on the Beaches soundtrack, Wind Beneath My Wings and The Glory of Love. You can get a taste for Menzel’s Wind Beneath My Wings in the background of the new trailer for the movie below. Beaches will first air on Lifetime in January. [Read more…]

Anthony Rapp To Play Gay Lead Character In Star Trek: Discovery

November 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

anthony-rappThey’re finally starting to pull the cast together for the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery. Things have been delayed a little, as originally the first episodes were due out in January, but not they’re expected some time in May 2017. So who will be heading to the set? Well, it’s been revealed that Michelle Yeoh and Doug Jones have both been cast, as has Rent’s Anthony Rapp, who will be playing the majot gay character co-creator Bryan Fuller announced would be part of the show back in August.

The official Star Trek website confirms that, ‘Jones will play Lt. Saru, a Starfleet science officer and an alien species new to the Star Trek universe. He is a respected actor with a large following of sci-fi and horror fans as a result of his creature performances in the likes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hellboy, Legion, Pan’s Labyrinth and The Strain.

‘Yeoh is set to play Captain Georgiou, the Starfleet captain aboard the starship Shenzhou. She is an internationally known actress and action star whose many credits include Tomorrow Never Dies and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

‘Rapp will beam aboard as Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert and Starfleet science officer on the starship Discovery. He is best known for his stage work in such Broadway productions as Rent, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown and If/Then, and also counts among his films credits School Ties, A Beautiful Mind and Rent.’

Some had though that when Yeoh was first rumoured a few days ago, she would be the show’s main character, as Fuller had said the show would be seen through a female character’s eyes, who won’t be the captain. However it doesn’t appear Yeoh will be that character, unless the announcement she’s the captain of another starship hides the fact she’s end up on the Discovery and no longer a captain.

Not too much more is known about Rapp’s character, although it has been confirmed that Stamets will be gay. Whether he’s in a relationship isn’t known, or indeed how his sexuality will figure into the series. We’ll have to wait another six months to find out!

The series will be available to stream via CBS: All Access in US and Netflix in the rest of the world next May.

Gus Van Sant & Joaquin Phoenix May Reteam For Biopic Of Cartoonist John Callahan

November 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

her-joaquin-phoenixIn the 1990s, Gus Van Sant liked the Phoenix’s, directing River Phoenix in My Own Private Idaho and a few years later Joaquin Phoenix in To Die For. Both were seminal roles for the actors, and since then Van Sant and Joaquin have talked about working together again numerous times, but either their schedules didn’t work out, ot the movie they were working on together fell through.

However, now they’re attempting to come together again, with Variety reporting that they’re set to team on Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, the long-gestating biopic of cartoonist John Callahan. And it really is long-gestating, as various Hollywood figures have been working on adapting Callahan’s autobiography since before My Own Private Idaho was made (Robin Williams was initially attached to play Callahan in the late-80s and early-90s).

The biopic will follow Callahan who was ‘paralyzed in a car accident at age 21, and turned to drawing as a form of therapy. For decades Callahan’s work raised eyebrows for its taboo topics leading to numerous boycotts in his hometown of Portland. His work was published in the New Yorker, Penthouse, and Playboy before his death in 2010.’ John’s work often touched on macabre topics, with a particular interest in physical disability, with his work labelled politically incorrect by many.

It’s not clear when the movie may shoot.

Jodie Foster To Star In Drew Pearce’s Near-Future Thriller Hotel Artemis

November 30, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jodie-fosterJodie Foster’s screen appearances are becoming increasingly rare. While she’s kept busy directing Money Monster and episodes of Orange Is The New Black, we haven’t seen her in a movie since 2013’s Elysium, and it was two years before that that she popped up in Carnage.

However, she’s now booked her next role, as THR reports she’s set to star in Hotel Atermis, the directorial debut of Iran Man 3 screenwriter, Drew Pearce. She will play ‘”The Nurse” in the near-future thriller that is set in its own distinctive crime universe.’ Not much more is known about the plot, although comparisons have been made to Looper, Ex Machina, and Drive.

Producer Stephen Cornwell comments, “Casting Jodie Foster is a real coup. She is an extraordinary talent and will bring something very special to the film. We are delighted to welcome her to this exciting production. Drew’s vision is unique and we can’t wait to see it brought to life by a stellar cast.”

It’s not clear when it might shoot.

Britain’s Got Talent Winner George Sampson To Star In Gay-Themed Movie, Closets

November 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

george-sampsonLloyd Eyre-Morgan’s short film Closets won Best British Short at the Iris Prize Festival in 2015, and now plans are afoot to turn it into a feature-length movie. Those plans have moved forward with the news, via Attitude, that George Sampson is set to appear in the film.

Sampson is best known as the teen dancer who won the second series of Britain’s Got Talent back in 2008. Since then he’s had success as an actor in the likes of Waterloo Road, Mount Pleasant, Emmerdale and featuring in Eyre-Morgan’s recently complete horror short, Kill Pill.

The original Closets short featured Tommy Knight (Waterloo Road, The Sarah Jane Smith Adventures), Ceallach Spellman (Cucumber) and Julie Hesmondhalgh (Coronation Street) in the tale of a teenager in the 1980s worried about his sexuality, who magically gets transported to 2016 when he goes into his closet, where he meets another teenager who has issues of his own.

23-year-old Sampson comments, “Everyday in the news I see reports of young people being bullied for who they are and what they believe in, with sometimes devastating outcomes. Closets is important to get involved in to show young people struggling with any sorts of bullying that there is hope and support out there… As a dancer I was bullied, people would assume that I was gay, as dancing was a ‘gay’ thing to do… but it had nothing to do with sexuality. Jealousy was the real issue and everything they said to me actually spoke volumes about them as a person, and not me. My dancing has been amazing for me, and I’m laughing because I stuck to it. Basically they can go and f*** themselves!”

Eyre-Morgan adds that he hoped the film will stand as “A beacon of hope for young people or anyone that’s ever experienced hate”, adding it “mixes the heart of Billy Elliot with the passion of Pride”.

The movie is currently in pre-production.

New Fences Trailer – Denzel Washington & Viola Davis bring the Pulitzer Prize-winning play to the screen

November 27, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

fences-slideJust from watching this trailer, it’s a decent bet Fences will be lining a few Oscar nomination in a few months time. Indeed, Denzel Washington (who both stars and directs) and Viola Davis already look like shoo-in for noms.

Here’s the synopsis of August Wilson‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning play the film is based on: ‘Troy Maxson, is a strong man, a hard man. He has had to be to survive. Troy Maxson has gone through life in an America where to be proud and black is to face pressures that could crush a man, body and soul. But the 1950s are yielding to the new spirit of liberation in the 1960s, a spirit that is changing the world Troy Maxson has learned to deal with the only way he can, a spirit that is making him a stranger, angry and afraid, in a world he never knew and to a wife and son he understands less and less.’

The film will be in cinemas at the end of the year. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

The First Alien: Covenant Poster Is Here To Show Off The Xenomorph

November 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alien-covenant-poster-slideOne of the main complaints about Prometheus is that is was marketed as an Alien movie, but it didn’t have any of the familiar killer aliens in it (except at the very end, sort of). As a result they shifted the focus of the follow-up, changed the name to Alien: Covenant to underline that this would indeed include the beloved nasties, and now a poster has arrived to show up front that yes, indeed, the xenomorph will be back.

However, it has been suggested that the full beastie has been redesigned, so it won’t completely look like the ones we’ve seen before. That’s not too surprising, as we know the aliens take on some of the attributes of their hosts, and alter slightly with each incarnation.

Not a vast amount more has been confirmed about the plot, although Michael Fassbender is back as David, and will also play another android, while Noomi Rapace will also have what is expected to be a small part in the movie. Katherine Waterston, Jussie Smollett, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Billy Crudup, and Amy Seimetz also star. It’s been suggested Waterston’s character is related in some way to Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley, and that the film itself may be closer in tone to the original Alien that most of the other entries in the franchise.

Fox seems to have plenty of faith in the movie, as they’ve moved its release up from August 2017 to May 19th. Ridley Scott is once more directing. Take a look at the poster below.

Moonlight Leads Independent Spirit Award Noms, With Plenty More Gay-Themed Films In The Mix Too

November 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

moonlight-slideIt’s certainly been a good year for gay-themed films amongst the nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards, the pre-eminent indie awards ceremony (films are only eligible if they have a budget of less and $20 million), which takes place ahead of the Oscars each year. Leading the way is the acclaimed Moonlight, Barry Jenkins’ film about a young, gay African-American, which picked up six noms, equal with the Shia LaBeouf starrer, American Honey.

It’s up for Best Feature, Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and is the sole nominee for the Robert Altman Award for Best Ensemble.

Also gettin multiple nods was Other People, starring Jesse Plemons as a gay guy who heads home to take care of his dying mother. It picked up four nominations for Plemons, co-star Molly Shannon, Chris Kelly for his screenplay and director Chris Kelly for Best First Feature.

However, Moonlight and Other People weren’t only the gay-themed films up for awards, with Spa Night (about a closeted Korean-American teenager) director Andrew Ahn up for the John Cassavettes Award (for Best Feature Made For Under $5,000) and Kiehl’s Someone to Watch Award. Lesbian crime drama Women Who Kill, was also nominated for the Kiehl’s Award, for director Ingrid Jungermann, while Certain Women was nominated for Best Director for Kelly Reichardt, while Lily Gladstone, whose character falls for Kristen Stewart in the movie, is up for Best Supporting Female.

There were also a couple of gay-themed documentaries in the mix, with ball-culture doc Kiki up for the Truer Than Fiction Award, while I Am Not Your Negro, about gay, African-American writer James Baldwin’s unfinished novel, Remember This House, is included in the Best Docuemntary category.

It’s certainly an impressive validation for LGBT-themed movies this year, with the hope that at least some of them will go on to be winners when the gongs are handed out early next year. Take a look at the full list of nominees below. [Read more…]

Silence Trailer – Plus a poster for Martin Scorsese’s drama starring Andrew Garfield & Liam Neeson

November 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

silence-poster-slideMartin Scorsese has been attached to Silence for years. However he kept putting it back, to the point where it briefly ended up in court as some of the backers felt he was essentially preventing it from actually getting made by never getting round to making it, but keeping himself attached to helm.

That was sorted out and Scorsese has now filmed the movie, based on Shusaku Endo’s novel. Set in the 17th Century, the story follows Father Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield), a Portuguese Jesuit priest who travels to Japan to confront his mentor, after rumours surface that he has abandoned the church. Ken Watanabe will portray Father Rodrigues’ Japanese interpreter, while Liam Neeson,Issei Ogata and Adam Driver also star.

The movie is getting an Oscar-qualifying run in the US in December, before expanding in January. It’ll be out in the UK early next year. [Read more…]
