Ewan McGregor, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal & More On The Doctor Strange Shortlist

October 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ewan-mcgregorA couple of months ago it seemed Marvel has sewn up the casting of Doctor Strange with Joaquin Phoenix in talks for the role. However he passed on the role and so the studio has been on the lookout again.

Variety is now reporting that Marvel has a shortlist of the people they may want, with some suggesting Ewan McGregor is now the frontrunner, with Ethan Hawke, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Oscar Isaac, and Jared Leto also in the mix.

While the list ranges from big names to those still rising up the ladder, it’s suggested Marvel would prefer a well-known name to lead the film, presumably because of concerns about lacking of recognition for the character.

However all of the them could fit the bill, as even Oscar Isaac is likely to be a much bigger name than he is now after Star Wars Episode VII. It’s thought McConaughey may be too big a name and too busy, unless he really wants to join the Marvel universe, while Gyllenhaal has a very mixed record in big films.

Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer, and serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Scott Derrickson is set to direct, with a July 8th, 2016 release date set.

Jurassic World Poster Lets Us Know The Park Is Opening

October 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jurassic-world-poster1It may be 21 years since Jurassic Park was first released, but the new poster for next year’s Jurassic World isn’t departing too far from the template that was set up back then, with the t-rex skeleton back in its circle.

Director Colin Trevorrow released the poster himself via Twitter, echoing the tagline with the message #theparkisopen.

As that suggests, the movie takes place in a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, where John Hammond’s vision has finally come to life. However it’s a safe bet that things don’t go well and there’ll be plenty of running and screaming from prehistoric beasties.

Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy, Jake Johnson, Judy Greer and B.D. Wong (reprising his character from the original Jurassic Park) star, with a June 12th, 2015 release date set.

Sam Raimi Takes On Love May Fail With Bi Screenwriter Mike White

October 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sam-raimiWe haven’t heard too much from Sam Raimi since Oz The Great And Powerful, but now he’s plotting his next move, as Deadline reports that he’s in negotiations to make the dramatic thriller Love May Fail.

The always dependable Mike White (The Good Girl, School Of Rock) has written the screenplay, based on Silver Linings Playbook author Matthew Quick’s novel. The story follows ‘a woman who is coming off a demoralizing ending to her marriage to a cheating husband returns to her hometown determined to clear the name of her favorite English teacher, whose career was ended forcibly after a classroom scandal.’

The novel isn’t due to be published until June 2015, so Raimi is certainly getting in early and obviously believes this is a story worth turning into a movie.

Out Actor Ezra Miller Will Be The Big Screen Flash, Amongst Other Major DC Comics Movie Announcements

October 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ezra-miller-slideA few months ago Warner Bros announced release dates for a load of DC Comics movies, but other than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, it didn’t say exactly which superheroes would appear in which movies.

That’s now changed, with 10 films having been announced running up to 2020. So what are we getting?

  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
  • Suicide Squad (2016)
  • Wonder Woman (2017)
  • Justice League Part One (2017)
  • The Flash (2018)
  • Aquaman (2018)
  • Shazam (2019)
  • Justice League Part Two (2019)
  • Cyborg (2020)
  • Green Lantern (2020)

There’s also plenty of casting news, with confirmation that Henry Cavill, Amy Adams and Ben Affleck will return for Justice League, while Gal Gadot will be in Wonder Woman’s shoe in a solo movie, and Jason Momoa will indeed be Aquaman.

On top of that, while Grant Gustin is playing Flash on the small screen, queer actor Ezra Miller (Perks Of Being A Wallfower) will take on the role on the big screen. Ray Fisher meanwhile will by Cyborg. The fact both those roles have already been cast strongly suggests we’ll be seeing them in Justice League and they may even pop up in Batman v Superman in one way or another.

If that weren’t enough, there are also likely to be standalone Batman and Superman movies, so Warner really is betting big on its comic book world and that it can find the same sort of success that Marvel has. Of course if the movies aren’t as successful as they hope, the plans they’ve announced may well change.

margarita-with-a-straw-slideAfter picking up the NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) award for Best Asian Film at the 39th Toronto International Film Festival, Margarita with a Straw is due to get a British airing at the London Film Festival in a few days time. As a result it’s a great opportunity to take a look at the LGBT-inclusive movie.

The film follows Laila (Kalki Koechlin), who embarks on the journey to seek love and acceptance. Sayani Gupta (Tasher Desh), plays the feisty and beautiful feminist with whom Laila embarks on a relationship, while veteran Indian actress Revathy is Laila’s mother and British actor William Moseley (Chronicles of Narnia), is Laila’s handsome friend Jared.

First Ever LGBT Film Festival To Be Staged In Burma

October 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

burma-lgbt-film-festivalUntil very recently Burma (also known as Myanmar) was one of the most closed off and secretive nations in the world, with its military dictatorship known for its lack of respect for human rights or anyone who disagreed with what they said. However in recent years the country has undergone massive and largely peaceful democratic reform. While there are still major criticisms, especially over the treatment of certain ethnic groups and the power the military still exerts.

One thing that would have been unthinkable 10 years ago in Burma would have been an LGBT film festival, but now one is coming, running from 12th-14th November at the French Institute in Rangoon.

The &Proud LGBT Film Festival plans to show 30 films mainly from Southeast Asian Nations, including five from Burma itself.

Program officer Hia Myat Tun tells Irrawaddy magazine, “We hope that festival will help the public to change their views about the LGBT community, or at least give them ideas that those views can be changed. We want to make a point that members of the LGBT community should be proud, and we wish to correct wrong messages that are being spread throughout the community by popular media.”

Tun also suggest that before reforms in 2012 it was very difficult to talk about LGBT issues in Burma at all, but that it is slowly changing and confidence is growing. Even so, it is still a very difficult place to be gay, as laws remain on the book that punish gay sex with up to 10 years to life in jail and fines.

The activist adds, “Some people will say that this is a bad idea, but it’s better than not saying anything about LGBT rights.”

New Foxcatcher Trailer – Channing Tatum & Steve Carell team up for the lauded drama

October 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Foxcatcher-poster-slideAfter several teaser the full US trailer for Foxcatcher has arrived, a movie that following its Cannes debut has been tipped by many to get a good showing at next year’s Oscar ceremony, with many saying Steve Carell is a shoe-in for a nom.

The film is based on the true tale of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), who was murdered by his paranoid schizophrenic friend Jon Du Pont (Carell) in 1996. Du Pont was an heir to the Du Pont chemical company, who teamed up with Dave’s brother Mark (Channing Tatum) to build a wrestling training facility known as ‘Team Foxcatcher’ on his sprawling Pennsylvania estate. The Schultzes tried to get Du Pont help for years before the murder.

Bennett Miller (Capote) directs from a screenplay by Dan Futterman and E. Max Frye. It’s out in the US on December 20th, with a mid-January UK date set. Trailer via Yahoo. [Read more…]

Javier Bardem Turning Bad Guy Again For Pirates Of The Caribbean 5

October 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

javier-bardemAfter the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, it was said Disney wanted to make another sequel as soon as it possibly could. However the project has been continually pushed back.

Now though it’s finally heading towards production, as following rumours it will shoot early next year in Australia, THR reports that Javier Bardem is in talks for the villain role. Although not much is known about the plot, Bardem will play ‘ghost captain who blames Sparrow for the death of his brother and is searching for a supernatural object to aid him’.

Jack Sparrow will also be getting a new love interest, who is said to be a woman accused of being a witch. That role is yet to be cast.

It’s known Geoffrey Rush will return, but there’s been no news on whether rumours that Orlando Bloom will be back are true.

Joachim Ronnin and Espen Sandbreg will direct, with an Australian shoot planned and a 2017 release date being eyed.

Robert Downey Jr. Coming Back For Captain America 3 & He’s Set To Start A Civil War

October 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

iron-man-3-downey-jrWhile Robert Downey Jr. was always going to return for a third Avengers film after next year’s Age Of Ultron, but until recently all suggestions had been that other than that he was hanging up the exo-suit.

However recently he suggested that against all odds he may well make an Iron Man 4 too, and now Variety reports he’s set to be a huge part of Captain America 3.

It would seem that what’s convinced Downey to remain a major part of the Marvel world (other than the gargantuan pay deal he’s negotiating, said to be $40 million plus profit participation) is that it will allow him to be central to a massive development in the comic book universe – the eruption of Civil War, which it seems will start in Captain America 3.

That means it won’t just be Batman Vs. Superman pitted against each other in 2016, as the Civil War storyline in the Marvel Comics centres around the Superhero Registration Act, which demands that those with super-human register themselves with and serve the US government. Steve Rogers is unimpressed by this and rebels against it, while Tony Stark thinks it’s a good idea. As a result the various heroes split into factions that ending up doing battle with one another.

It means that in Captain America 3, Stark is likely to be close to being the villain, although we’re sure they won’t make him too bad.

There are also rumours that Anthony Russo and Joe Russo won’t just direct Cap 3, but will also take over from Joss Whedon for Avengers 3 & 4, but at the moment that is far from being confirmed. Captain America 3 is due out May 6th, 2016.

All God’s Creatures Makes It Three In A Row For Australia At The Iris Prize Gay Short Film Festival

October 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

all-gods-creatures-slideAustralia seems to be where it’s at for gay and lesbian short films, as for the third year in a row (after The Wilding and Gorilla), a filmmaker from Down Under has picked up the prestigious Iris Prize, handed out in Cardiff, Wales, to the best LGBT short screening at the fest. This year the winner is All God’s Creatures, directed by Brendon McDonall, which picks up the £25,000 main prize, supported by The Michael Bishop Foundation, that allows the filmmaker to create a new short in the UK.

All God’s Creatures, about the relationship between two young brothers following the death of their father, beat out Aban + Korshid and Bombshell in the very final stage of competition. It was handed the award by Lord Glendonbrook at the sold out Iris Awards 2014, presented by Amy Lamé at Cardiff’s Park Inn Hotel.

Sara Sugarman, Chair of the Iris Prize Jury commented, “Iris 2014 theme was ‘bigger and better’, and this was nowhere more evident than on the screen. The standard of films this year was exceptionally high, covering a rich diversity of genres and themes, and this made for some very robust jury discussions.  We were really pleased to see stories tackling some of the most pressing issues affecting the LGBT community globally, as well as more intimate, personal dramas.”

All God’s Creatures wasn’t the only winner, as the new Best British Short prize was presented to Middle Man, directed by Charlie Francis, who was present at the ceremony. The gong is sponsored by Pinewood Studios who have committed services valued at £14,000 for the winner’s next short film. Jury Chair Judith Nobel said: “Middle Man is a perfect short film. It is beautifully structured, witty and touching. In 5 minutes we have watched great directing, wonderful characterisation, excellent editing and a great story. A story about love with universal appeal.” There was also a Commendation for WE ARE FINE directed by Simon Savory.

The Best Feature Award was presented to Boy Meets Girl, while the performance awards, sponsored by Gay Star News, were presented to Michael Welch for his role as Robby in Boy Meets Girl and Kate Trotter who played Alice in Tru Love. Presenting the Award Tris Reid-Smith and Lynne Reynolds said, “This has been a breakthrough year for features at Iris and our deliberations were tough but the performances we chose represent  the best of LGBT cinema – challenging, heart-warming and true”.

Finally, the Iris Prize Youth Award was presented to Bombshell, directed by Erin Sanger from the USA. The Youth Jury said, ”This film is really useful as a teaching aid because issues of identity and prejudice are drawn out authentically for a teenage audience. It is a perfectly scripted and played mood piece that discusses misogyny and encourages empathy with those who are perceived not to be normal.”

There was also a special mention for Butterfly as a positive film that helps us understand the realities of living with aspergers and transgender issues.

The next festival is already in the works, with next year’s Iris Prize Festival taking place from Wednesday 7th-Sunday 11th October 2015. [Read more…]
