The Last Straight Man Trailer – A closeted gay guy and a straight man bond in unexpected ways

January 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sexuality can be a complex things, and that seems to be true in the upcoming movie The Last Straight Man, as you can see in this trailer.

In Mark Bessenger’s movie, ‘closeted Lewis (Mark Cirillo) throws a bachelor party for his best friend and secret crush Cooper (Scott Sell), only to have it end with the drunken pair going to bed together. They decide to secretly meet in the same hotel suite on the same night every year to catch up with their lives and further explore their sexual desires. The film shows us five of their meetings over a twelve year period to see how their friendship and relationship changes.’

Mark Cirillo is a bit of a gay movie veteran, as you’ll know if you’ve seen Shut Up And Kiss Me, The Seminarian or The Men Next Door, while Sell is a newcomer to the world of film.

The Last Straight Man will be heading to film festivals this year. [Read more…]

Yeah, Kowalski! Director Seeks Funding For New Documentary About An LGBT Youth

January 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Evan Roberts impressed a lot of people with his extremely entertaining short film, Yeah, Kowalski!, about a young LGBT teen who’s desperate to grow armpit hair. Now he’s raising fund for a new movie, a documentary called Arvind.

One of the things many liked about Yeah, Kowalski! is that while the main character is queer, that’s just something that’s there, but isn’t the main subject of the movie. It seems it will be a similar story with the new film, as while the 16-year-old subject is LGBT, it’s his incredible story that’s the movie concentrates on.

Here’s the synopsis from the film’s Kickstarter campaign: ‘Arvind’s mother- a first generation immigrant from India- was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BDP) and depression. During a bitter divorce trial with Arvind’s father, she attempted to poison Arvind, 3, and his older brother, Arjuna, 6, as well as herself.

‘After 12 years Arvind’s mother was released from prison and attempted to contact her sons. The brothers brought her to court and were successful in securing a life-long protective order against her.

‘In response, Arvind wrote a play called MOMMY with his mother as the main character. The documentary ARVIND follows his life during this process.’

The play premieres in the US at the end of this month, and the funding will allow Roberts to complete telling the story.

Robert commented to HuffPo, “LGBT youth, and specifically LGBT youth of color, aren’t represented often in film and media. This lack of representation in the media can make someone feel invisible to the rest of society. I think it’s important that minorities groups, such as queer youth, are depicted in ways that are affirming and aspirational but also authentic and complex. I also want to tell a universal story that many people can find an entry point into, and where sexuality is part of a character’s development, not a defining characteristic. I hope audiences will relate to Arvind and connect with him through his experience of bringing his story to the world — and perhaps be inspired to do the same.”

If you’d like to help fund the film, head over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]

Miles Teller May Join John Belushi Biopic As Dan Aykroyd

January 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Miles-TellerA few months ago the surprising news emerged that Emil Hirsch had been tapped to star in a biopic of portly funnyman John Belushi. Now we know who’ll be joining him as John Belushi, as THR reports Mile Teller has bagged the role.

Steve Conrad (The Weather Man) wrote the screenplay and is directing the biopic, which follows John Belushi’s life until his tragic death at the age of 33 from a heroin overdose. The story is said to be an allegory that illuminates the highs and lows of the American dream.

Aykroyd of course became one of Belushi’s main comedy partners, working with him on Saturday Night Live and making the likes of Blues Brother together. Dan is also one of the executive producers, so it really should be an insider view.

Hirsch actually made the announcement at a Sundance party, telling the attendees, “A shout-out to Miles Teller! We’re going to be working together soon. He’s playing Dan Aykroyd in the Belushi movie.” However Teller hasn’t yet signed on the dotted line.

New Maleficent Teaser – Angelina Jolie is getting her bad fairy on

January 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first teaser for Maleficent was cool, but we didn’t get a particularly great look at Angelina Jolie in the title role. Now a new teaser has arrived which shows Angie in all her bad-plastic-surgery-looking cheekbone glory.

It also attempts to tie the movie in more directly to Disney’s animated 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty, letting us know this movie will be tied directly to that one, giving a different side to the tale and letting us know the tale of that film’s villain.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.’

It’s due in cinemas this May. [Read more…]

Andrew Garfield Vs. Jamie Foxx In New Amazing Spider-man 2 Posters

January 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amazing-spider-man-2-poster8
There’s been plenty of talk about multiple villains in The Amazing Spider-man 2, but the marketing is certainly selling it as a showdown between Spidey and Electro. That’s certainly true of a trio of new posters that have been released, which you can see above and below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

‘It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.’

The movie is due in cinemas this April.

Batman Vs. Superman Slips To From 2015 To Summer 2016

January 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

2015 is shaping up to be one hell of a year for gargantuan movies, with the likes of Avengers 2, Star Wars VII and Jurassic World, but now one of the biggest films has slipped out of 2015 and into 2016. Warner Bros. has announced that the release of Zack Snyder’s untitled Batman Vs. Superman film has moved from July 17, 2015 to May 6, 2016.

man-of-steel-promo-pic1The official reason is so that it will ‘allow the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story’. There are also reports that a leg injury to Ben Affleck, who’s set to play Batman, forced a delay to the shoot by a couple of months, putting even more pressure on the film.

Snyder’s Batman Vs. Superman film stars Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent, and Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne. The film will also reunite Man of Steel stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane, and also stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. Zack Snyder will direct the film from a screenplay written by David S. Goyer.

Warner has already moved to put another movie into the July 17th, 2015 slot, which is when we’ll get Joe Wright’s as-yet-untitled all-new Peter Pan adventure.

Stranger-By-The-Lake-UK-Quad
Stranger By The Lake made major waves at the Cannes Film Festival last year, both for it’s twisting thriller storytelling and the fact it features plenty of ‘art-porn’ style gay sex. The movie arrives in UK cinemas in February, and now distributor Peccadillo Pictures has released a new trailer that gives us a feel for both the movie and the fact it’s not afraid to get sexy – even giving us that rare movie trailer sight, full frontal male nudity!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Summer time. A cruising spot for gay men, tucked away on the shores of a secluded lake in rural France. Franck falls in love with Michel, an attractive, extremely potent but lethally dangerous man. Franck has witnessed this first hand, but his desire for Michel knows no bounds, this is a relationship he must have – at any cost.’

The film, which should be well worth a look, will arrive in UK cinemas on February 21st 2014. [Read more…]
