Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci Returning To Write Star Trek 3

August 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

roberto-orci-alex-kurtzmanA couple of weeks ago it was reported that Paramount was thinking of hiring Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (Thor, X-Men: First Class) to write Star Trek 3. That surprised many, as it suggested Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who wrote the first two, were leaving the franchise behind.

However the news of the other writers might just have been a negotiating ploy on the part of Paramount, as THR reports that Orci and Kurtzman are in now in talks to write the screenplay for Star Trek 3, with J.J. Abrams in the process of signing up to remain aboard the franchise as a producer (although he won’t direct as he’ll be too busy with Star Wars Episode VII.

Star Trek Into Darkness co-writer Damon Lindelof is not going to be a part of this sequel (at least at this point), which Paramount is hoping to release in 2016, which would coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek TV.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana and most of the rest of the cast are expected to return, although there’s no news yet on who will be directing them. The latest rumours sayt Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe Retaliation) is the studio’s top candidate, but we’ll have to wait and see who’ll end up helming.

Benedict Cumberbatch Up For The Penguins of Madagascar

August 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Benedict-cumberbatchBenedict Cumberbatch often comes across as very serious on-screen, but he’s definitely got a lighter side, which he’ll be showing off with his new project. He’s signed up to lend his voice to The Penguins of Madagascar, according to TheWrap. He’s not the only one either, as John Malkovich has joined the Madagascar spin-off too. Hit the jump to find out whom they’ll play.

There’s too many plot details are few, although it will obviously focus on the Penguins that became such as hit in the Madagascar movies. Benedict Cumberbatch will voice an animal who is secretly working for the CIA. He is chasing down a villain portrayed by John Malkovich.

Simon J. Smith is set to direct from a script by Michael Colton and John Aboud. The Penguins of Madagascar can currently be seen on a Nickelodeon TV show, a straight to DVD movie and a comic written by David Server and Jackson Lanzing, so they’re certainly popular. It should be out March 2015.

Steven Spielberg Drops Out Of Bradley Cooper Starrer American Sniper

August 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Steven-SpielbergIn what we’re hoping isn’t becoming a pattern, Steven Spielberg has dropped out of the film that was all set to be his next movie. It’s happened previously with Robopocalypse in February and now Deadline reports that he’s decided not to make American Sniper, which he announced as his next effort a few months ago.

The action movie is based on the autobiography of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, a Texas native who racked up the most confirmed sniper kills of anyone in US military history. Tragically though, he was killed by a fellow veteran at a shooting range last February (it’s not clear if that will be included in the movie).

Filming had tentatively been scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2014, with Bradley Cooper in the lead role. It’s not yet clear if Cooper will still try to get another director and go ahead early next year, although it’s likely as Bradley is producing and it was him who secured the rights to the autobiography last year.

Spielberg is said to have left because he “couldn’t square his vision of this movie with the budget.” A similar problem his Robopocalypse, which went back into script development when it was decided it was simply too expensive to make as it was. There’s no news though and what Spielberg might make instead.

Josh Gad Takes The Lead In Sam Kinison Biopic, With Larry Charles Helming

August 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

josh-gadSam Kinison is a legend among American comedians, famed for his screaming rants and biting humour. Now he’s getting the film treatment, with Deadline reporting that Josh Gad (The Book of Mormon, Love & Other Drugs) is set to play the comic, with Larry Charles (Borat, Bruno) directing.

Rich Wilkes has come up with the script, based on the book Brother Sam by Kinison’s brother, Bill Kinison.

Kinison was born to a preacher father, and brought his father’s booming style to his comedy. In the 80s he became one of the biggest names in the stand-up world, fearlessly taking on subject few others would touch. However in his personal life he battled against depression and alcoholism before dying in 1992 when a drunk driver hit his car.

Producer David Permut comments, “There was nothing conventional about Sam Kinison and neither will be the cinematic interpretation of his life. Larry Charles is the perfect director to bring Rich Wilkes’ incredible script to screen, and Josh Gad’s tremendous ability to morph into a role will bring great depth to Kinison’s larger than life persona.”

Gad said on Twitter, “Couldn’t be more honored & humbled 2 play Sam. His comedy remains some of the most fearless I have ever seen.”

Expect to hear plenty more interesting casting, as the script includes real-life name such as Tammy Faye Bakker, Richard Pryor and Howard Stern, who will undoubtedly attract some good actors.

Ed Harris Joins Ethan Hawke In Cymbeline

August 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ed-harrisWe only first heard about a movie version of Shakepeare’s Cymbeline last week, when it was revealed that Ethan Hawke was set to star in Michael Almereyda’s adaptation. However, with the film set to start shooting in a couple of weeks time, there’s plenty more role to fill.

One of those has now gone to Ed Harris, according to THR, who’ll play the king of the title. Shakespeare’s play is about the daughter of the British king Cymbeline, who discovers she has secretly married a man raised in her father’s court, resulting in his banishment from the court. However this modern day take ‘unfolds as a battle between dirty cops and a drug-dealing biker gang set in a corruption-riddled 21st century America.’

Shooting begins on August 19th in New York.

Paradise Trailer – First look at Julianne Hough in Diablo Cody’s movie

August 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Juno and Young Adult screenwriter Diablo Cody is turning director with Paradise, which is due to hit cinemas later this year. Now the first trailer for the movie has arrived.

Previously titled Lamb Of God, the comedy is about a young conservative religious woman (Julianne hough) who loses her faith after a plane crash. She decides to go to Las Vegas to live the life of a sinner – although what she classes as sin and what most people do are very different – and on her journey finds her way back to her faith. Cody comments that, “She is so naive that some of the shocking things she does we all would do on a Friday night.”

Russell Brand plays William, a bartender who befriends the young woman after she arrives in Vegas. The great cast also includes Octavia Spencer, Nick Offerman, and Holly Hunter.

It’ll be out in the US in October, but there’s no UK release currently set. [Read more…]

Christopher McQuarrie Confirmed To Direct Mission: Impossible 5

August 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

christopher-mcquarrieWay back last November is was first reported that Christopher McQuarrie was in talks to direct Mission: Impossible 5. It’s taken a long time to sort things out, but now the man himself has revealed on Twitter that he’s taken the job, simply saying, ‘Mission: Accepted’.

Tom Cruise is already signed up for the movie, and it’s likely his influence that got McQuarrie onboard. Cruise and McQuarrie have a relationship that started with the 2008 historical drama Valkyrie, which Christopher wrote. More recently Tom starred in Jack Reacher, which McQuarrie wrote and directed. The filmmaker has also provided uncredited rewrites for Tom Cruise movies such as Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol and the upcoming The Edge Of Tomorrow, so he really does seem to be a bit of a fave with the star.

Iron Man 3 scribe Drew Pearce signed up in May to write the movie, with reports then suggesting the movie was on an accelerated schedule as Cruise wants to shoot the movie this autumn.

The last Mission: Impossible movie, directed by Brad Bird, took nearly $700 million at the global box office, and with the likes of Brian De Palma, John Woo and JJ Abrams helming earlier instalments, McQuarrie has big shoes to fill.
